The MRS-TEM instrument offers significant improvements over the previous state of the art in surface MRS techniques because the resistivity information for the subsurface is obtained from a complementary geophysical method, the TEM. Therefore, it is possible to invert the MRS and TEM datasets simultaneously, which overcomes the defects of the conventional inversion process of MRS systems that lack resistivity information. Furthermore, by merging the transmit/receive capability in both of the methods, the development of the combined instrument facilitates time-and energy-efficient in groundwater imaging. In this paper, we outline the technical specifications and capabilities of the MRS-TEM combined system. We initially demonstrate the high efficiency of the novel instrument and its working models. Specifically, the joint inversion scheme of both MRS and TEM data sets for detecting aquifers basing on an improved adaptive genetic algorithm were demonstrated in detail. This algorithm is very helpful for enhancing spatial resolution to a quantitative interpretation of the groundwater contents. Taking advantages of the deep resistivity information from TEM data, we also suggest an alternate approach by using Archie's law for total deep aquifer predication (>150m). Finally, we present the successful results of some recent groundwater investigations conducted in China, including Suizhong Town of Liaoning Province, Baiqi city of inner-Mongolia province and Huadong Town of Jilin Province. These field studies suggest that the combined system can led to a more reliable and robust estimations of all hydrological parameters.
