Abstract:A response time as short as 5.4 ms and an exponential gain coefficient as large as 1795.0 cm(-1) were obtained in C-60 doped 4,4'-n-pentylcyanobiphenyl liquid crystal cells sandwiched with two indium tin oxide glass plates coated with nanoscale photoconductive ZnSe films, which is believed to be facilitating charge-carrier generation and transportation and, hence, to be responsible for the fast response rate. The surface-mediated photorefractive effect and the ZnSe interlayers were both behind the high gain coefficients. The two-dimensional diffraction patterns observed in our system are also discussed. Abstract:Real time updatable holographic recording was demonstrated in C60 doped 4,4′-n-pentylcyanobiphenyl liquid crystal cells made of indium tin oxide glass plates covered with nanoscale ZnSe thin films, without aligning layers required. Possible governing mechanism behind the associated findings was proposed and supported experiments were presented, based on the excellent charge carrier generation/migration in the ZnSe and liquid crystal layers and near the ZnSe/liquid crystal interfaces.

Abstract:With ZnSe thin films as aligning layers in fabricating liquid crystal (LC) panel with pentylcyanobiphenyl doped with C-60, the response time in writing holograms was shortened to milliseconds. When two laser beams were overlapped in an LC panel, 2D diffraction patterns were observed, along with exponential gain coefficient highly LC and ZnSe thickness dependent. In addition, energy transferring in subwavelength scale through surface grating was evident. By using a hybrid LC panel, it was found the energy transferring direction was voltage polarity and thickness dependent. Abstract:As large as 4607cm−1 gain coefficient in two beam coupling experiment was obtained by introducing PVK:C60 film to ZnSe assisted liquid crystal system. As short as 5.0ms holographic recording time was reached when probing the grating formation process, showing great potential in real time applications. Systematical two beam coupling and grating probing experiments were performed in studying the mechanism behind the high photorefractive (PR) performance. Unusual energy transfer direction change and gain coefficient fluctuation were observed when the voltage polarity and incidence side were altered in the related two wave coupling experiments.

Abstract:Fast responses (20 ms rising time) both in symmetrical two-wave and degenerate-four-wave mixing experiments were observed and investigated in C(60) doped 4,4'-n-pentylcyanobiphenyl liquid crystal cells sandwiched between bare ZnSe substrates with an electric field applied parallel to the cell surfaces. The ZnSe material seems responsible for the fast response due to its excellent charge carrier transportation capability. Strong fanning effect and transient features were seen and studied, hinting super strong photorefractive effect in the material system. This low voltage operated liquid crystal based photorefractive approach is promising in real time applications over visible to terahertz regime.

Abstract:Transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) with single cell gap consisting optically compensated bend (OCB) and low twist nematic modes has been studied. Since no double cell gap structure is included in the configuration, the fabrication process is easy and only one more step UV exposure is needed during photoalignment process to produce domains. Based on this new configuration, a transflective LCD with high brightness and high contrast could be obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a dynamic holographic display in a quantum dot (ZnS/InP) doped liquid crystal device, where one of the interior cell surfaces is covered by a ZnSe layer. Such a hybrid device shows substantially improved photorefractive sensitivity of 2.2 cm3/J, which is almost 300 times larger than that in ZnS/InP doped liquid crystal device without the ZnSe layer. The holographic grating can form at intensities as low as ~0.8 mW/cm2, and exhibit a fast optical response of several to tens of milliseconds. Exploiting the superior performances of photosensitivity and fast response of this device, we obtain dynamic holographic videos of red, green, and blue colors, as well as a reconstructed image of high gray-scale fidelity.

Abstract:An achromatic ferroelectric liquid crystal display based on the configuration of double parallel-aligned cells with contrast ratio up to more than 200:1 has been predicted in simulation. A proto type of such display based on the simulation has been fabricated using photoalignment technology. Under the new double layer structure, a ferroelectric liquid crystal display with high black-to-white contrast ratio and wide viewing angle is obtained for both Transmissive and reflective modes.

Abstract:In this paper we present fast response processes in dye doped liquid crystal cell with ZnSe layers on electrodes. Two-wave mixing and grating monitoring experiments were performed to characterize this liquid crystal system. With the help of photoconductive layers, the response time was reduced to a few milliseconds, which improved further the response rate in liquid crystal photorefractive system. A peak in response time versus applied voltage and unexpected oscillations in diffraction efficiency dynamics were observed, which implies unconventionally complex charge dynamics associated with SPPs excited at one of the photoconductive layer/liquid crystal interfaces.

Abstract:With submicrometer thick photoconducting, semiconductor ZnSe thin films as interlayers between ITO glass and thin film of C-60 doped mixture of polymer poly[N-vinylcarbazole] (PVK) and nematic liquid crystal (LC) 4,4'-n-pentylcyanobiphenyl (5CB), an updatable holographic recording medium was fabricated. When two laser beams were overlapped in the holographic recording medium, 2D diffraction patterns were seen, along with several interesting observations. The frequent sign changing of energy transferring between the two transmitted laser beams and large dynamic change in different diffraction orders implied complex processes of electric charge generation, transportation and compensation in the interfaces and within composite polymer film. Electrostatic modification based surface grating formation was proposed to explain all the findings.

Abstract:Great impact of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on photorefractive effect in ZnSe/liquid crystal interface was observed and studied in dye pyrromethane 597 doped 4,4'-n-pentylcyanobiphenyl (5CB) liquid crystal (LC) cells sandwiched with ZnSe coated ITO glass plates. Locally electrostatic modification of ZnSe in charge carrier density makes possible visible light excitation of SPPs in the LC/ZnSe interfaces. A tentative physical picture of SPP mediation was proposed in elucidating associated findings, including photoinduced scattering enhancement at low electric field and then reduction at high field, stepwise up- and down-turns in exponential gain coefficient, and 2D diffraction patterns. This work may open a new way toward tunable low-loss visible excitation of SPPs for plasmonic applications, specifically for organic plasmonics. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America
Opto-electronic properties of ZnSSe films for liquid crystal light valve

Abstract:The opto-electronic properties of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)technique grown by ZnSSe thin films on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass substrates were investigated. Ultraviolet (UV) photo-responsivity as high as 0.01 A/W and three orders of visible rejection power are demonstrated at room temperature. The results of d.c. resistivity measurements reveal that the dark resistivity of the ZnSSe thin films decreases as the crystal size increases and reaches a value of 4.3× 1011 Ω @ cm for a thin film grown at the optimised substrate temperature, 2900C. The results of a.c. impedance measurements performed in the frequency range of 40Hz to 4000 Hz further indicate that the impedance of this alloy thin film can provide a good matching with the liquid crystal layer of a liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) for UV imaging applications.

Abstract:A new method to demonstrate the dynamic enhancement of the photorefractive effect in C-60-doped homeotropically aligned 4-cyano-4'-pentyl-biphenyl (5CB) liquid crystals under the influence of an externally applied dc voltage is presented in the read-out process. We observed clear holographic images due to the transient diffraction efficiency enhancement controlled by the application of a dc voltage. The hidden gratings are due to a light-induced surface-charge modulation and amplified by the Carr-Helfrich effect in the presence of the electric field produced by the dc voltage. A qualitative analysis of the phenomenon, according to which the effective bulk voltage is modulated due to light-induced surface modifications, is proposed. We achieved the highest transient first-order diffraction efficiency of up to 40%. The effective nonlinear index coefficient is as large as 0.2 cm(2) W-1.
Subwavelength Coupling Strengthened Optical Amplification In Nematic Liquid Crystal Cells

Abstract:We observed strikingly different first reflection dynamics of two counter-propagating laser beams passing through a wedge-shaped C-60-doped liquid crystal cell sandwiched between two ZnSecoated ITO glass plates without applied electric field, suggesting a strong subwavelength energy coupling between light beams. Exponential gain coefficient as high as 10 574 cm(-1) was obtained from the 1.1 mu m-thick portion of the cell under applied voltage U-0 = 3.0 V, consisting with the subwavelength coupling picture. Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) supporting layer is identified by considering dipolar properties of liquid crystal molecules that are well aligned. The specific features in energy coupling dynamics and 2D diffraction patterns perceived suggest that SPP mediated coupling is responsible for all the findings. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:Holographic display, which can completely reconstruct phase and amplitude information, is considered as an ideal true three‐dimensional display technology. In this work, liquid crystal doped with perovskite (CsPbBr3) works as the photorefractive material and forms diffraction grating under the interference light beams. The dependences of diffraction efficiency and response time on doping concentration, recording beam power and applied voltage are investigated. A maximum first‐order diffraction efficiency of 18% has been achieved under a low electric field intensity of ~0.5 V/μm and the shortest grating build up time is as low as 5.5 ms. The system can realize a real‐time dynamic display with 60 Hz refresh rate.

Abstract:In this paper, we studied the holographic properties of liquid crystal (LC) thin film doped with carbon dots (CDs) which can be used as real-time holographic display screen. The maximum value of diffraction efficiency can reach up to 30% by using a low applied electric field 0.2 V/mu m. Holograms in the LC film can be dynamically formed and self-erased. The hologram build-up time and the hologram self-erasure time in the material is fast enough to realize video refresh rate. In addition, the forming process of hologram was studied. The holographic diffraction efficiency was measured depending on the intensity of recording light, applied electric field, the intensity of readout light, and readout light polarization direction. Triple enhancement of the diffraction efficiency value by the modulation of voltage under the condition of low recording energy is presented. Therefore, we develop an easy way to obtain real-time dynamic holographic red, green and blue displays with high diffraction efficiency, which allow the LC film doped with CDs to be used as a holographic 3D display screen.

Abstract:The holographic grating formation induced by an input pattern in company with a reference wave in a fullerene-doped nematic liquid crystal film were studied experimentally. The holographic grating was formed in the LC film at a low applied dc field 0.07V/µm. In experiment we employed a particular method in order to reconstruct the hologram, namely recorded the hologram under low voltage and reconstructed the hologram by high voltage. Evidence concerning the reconstruction of holograms indicates that this photorefractive liquid crystal can, indeed, serve as a hologram-recording medium.

Abstract:Using a single substrate, we demonstrate a simple two-dimensional (2-D) phase grating cell with an octothorp electrode. Owing to the large spatial phase difference in any direction, the proposed grating cell has a high haze value in the opaque state (76.7%); Moreover, it has the advantages of a one-dimensional (1-D) phase grating cell, such as high fabricability, fast response time, and low operating voltage. Furthermore, the proposed grating cell has a faster response time than the 2-D grating cell (comparable to a 1-D grating cell). All the electro-optic parameters have been calculated using a commercial modeling tool. Consequently, we expect our proposed grating cell to find applications in virtual reality (VR)/augmented reality (AR) systems or window displays with fast response times.
