Abstract:We present a theoretical method for analyzing the first-order optics of stabilized zoom lenses with two focal-length-variable elements. The zoom equations are established through the use of the Gaussian brackets method. This is done because the optical power of the focal-length-variable elements varies during the zooming process. The first and second derivatives and the Hessian matrix of the zoom equations with respect to the Gaussian parameters are determined using the equations. These parameters could represent the sensitivity of the zoom ratio of the system to changes in the corresponding system variables. We select the initial values of these system variables, i.e. the magnification of the focal-length-variable element and the structure parameters of the fixed lens group, to be close to the steepest gradient direction. Here the sensitivity of the system focal length is high with respect to variations in the zoom variables. This process leads to an increase in the zoom ratio of the zoom system. The results show successful four-group stabilized zoom lens designs with 2:1 and 5:1 zoom ratios, using two deformable mirrors as focal-length-variable elements. This system, with the inherent characteristics of a steepest gradient, could miniaturize zoom systems.

Abstract:We have developed an optical zoom system based on tunable lens with polymer membrane and multilayered structure. The presented system employed two tunable lenses and two doublet lenses as the main refractive units. Each tunable lens had a delicately designed, solid-liquid mixed structure with multiple internal slim holes, which helped to improve the lens optical properties and stability against gravity. The optical structure and regulation principle of the zoom system is presented, as well as the detailed fabrication process of the tunable lens. Under different displacement loads, the lens deformation properties, and the adjustment ability and imaging characteristics of the zoom system were measured and analyzed. Besides, the spot diagram, field curvature and distortion of the system were simulated using the Zemax software. The magnification of the designed system could be regulated from 0.2X to 4.3X flexibly depending on the focal variation of each tunable lens.

Abstract:A zoom lens system is usually composed of several components. Some of the components can be moved to change the focal length or magnification. Zoom lens system design is more complicated than fixed-focus lens design due to the moving of some components. In this paper, an optimization method that is used to design zoom lens systems is presented. Using this method, the Gaussian parameters of zoom lens systems are optimized at first, and then the initial structure parameters in each component are generated and optimized. At last the aberration balance is made using multi-configuration. In this paper the flowchart of optimization design for such complex optical systems is showed and the algorithms are described. As a conclusion, the relationship between power distribution, initial structure and the aberrations is considered at the beginning, the evaluation criteria are reliable and efficiency for designing zoom lens systems.

Abstract:Stabilized zoom systems possess the advantages such as the simplified system layout, improved system stability, enhanced imaging performance, and a high zoom speed. The complex system design to achieve high performances requires calculations or investigations of the initial system for optimization and improvements, and thus, specific design techniques are pursued. In this study, we propose an automatic optical design scheme of synthetic characteristics for the off-axis stabilized zoom systems, which using focal length variable (FLV) opto-electronic elements and with a high zoom ratio. The study aims at evaluating and synthetically achieving the zooming properties and the image quality balance of entire focus imaging. The multi-element stabilized zoom systems are characterized using the Gaussian brackets expressions and their optimal solution ranges for high zoom ratios are deduced to achieve non-defocusing imaging in specific stroke ranges of FLV elements. Then considering the analytical characterization of the off-axis-induced primary aberrations at multi-conjugate positions, we use a conic surface to deduce the basic expression of the nodal aberration. Thereby the nonlinear global merit function is established with a semi-empirical mathematical model based on nodal aberration theory and nonlinear zoom equation for maintaining the stability of focal length and image plane drift. And the theory of Pareto Optimality is employed in the process of verifying the superiority of the solutions. Finally, a series of solutions for a high zoom ratio and aberration compensation are implemented and the optimal configurations with conical surfaces for an off-axis stabilized zoom system are obtained.

Abstract:Zoom system is an optical system of which the focal length can be changed continuously within a certain range, while the image plane keeps stable and the image quality remains good. Zoom system usually consists of fixed group, variable group and compensation group. However, designing a zoom system can be a complex task due to the large number of variables involved in the optical design. One of the critical challenges is to obtain an effective initial structure of the zoom system. In this paper, a design method based on Delano diagram is proposed to establish the first-order model for the initial structure of the zoom system, which describes the relationship between the zoom ratio, focal length, and other parameters. On the basis of the model, the first-order merit function of the zoom system is analyzed and derived. By controlling the merit function with the help of the algorithm optimization, the first-order solution for the initial structure of zoom system is obtained and can be used for subsequent optimization. In order to further prove the effectiveness of the initial structure, the first-order solution is converted into an actual lens according to the properties of the zoom system. After further optimization, a zoom system with good image quality is obtained, which indicates that the initial structure of the zoom system is of great optimization potential. The final result shows that the design method proposed in this paper provides a helpful approach to solving the problem in obtaining an effective initial structure of the zoom system.

Abstract:This paper demonstrated a zoom optical system with variable magnification based on the tunable polymer lens. The designed system mainly consists of two polymer lenses, voice coil motors, a doublet lens and CMOS chip. The zoom magnification can be adjusted by altering the focal length of the two elastic polymer lenses synergistically through controlling the output displacement of the voice coil motor. A static doublet lens in combination with the polymer lenses stabilize the image plane at the CMOS chip. The optical structure of the zoom system is presented, as well as a detailed description including the lens materials and fabrication process. Images with each zoom magnification are captured, and the Spot diagram and MTF are simulated using Zemax software. A change in magnification from 0.13×to 8.44×is demonstrated within the tiny 0.4 mm variation of the displacement load, and produce a 16.1×full range of magnification experimentally. Simulation analyses show that all the radii of the spot diagram under different magnifications are less than 11.3 um, and the modulation transfer function reaches 107 line pairs per mm. The designed optical system shows the potential for developing stable, integrated, and low-cost zoom systems with large magnification range.

Abstract:A compact varifocal panoramic annular lens (PAL) system based on the four-component mechanical zoom method is proposed, which solves the problem that the traditional PAL system cannot zoom in to the region of interest. By moving the zoom group and the compensation group, our design achieves continuous zooming, in which the focal length changes from 3.8 to 6 mm. It can keep the position of the image surface unchanged while maintaining a compact structure. The system has a field of view (FoV) of 25°-100° in wide-angle mode and an FoV of 25°-65° in telephoto mode. The modulation transfer function of the wide-angle view is higher than 0.22 at 147 lp/mm. The F-theta distortion is less than 3%, and the relative illuminance is higher than 0.9 in the zoom process. Compared with the zoom PAL system with multiple free-form aspheric surfaces, the proposed system uses multiple spherical lenses and only one Q-type asphere lens to achieve outstanding panoramic zoom imaging results. It is practical and straightforward, easy to manufacture, detect, and mass produce.

Abstract:In order to design an optical system with focal length range from 17 to 1 700 mm,a proper initial optical layout is selected first,the rule of system performance influenced by Guassian solution is found through comparing Guassian optical calculation results,and the key parameters of the system are selected.Then the configuration of each assembly is chosen through analyzing the relative aperture and characteristics of aberrations,and the system aberration is corrected and balanced.The total track of the result lens is 760 mm,the modulation transfer functions at 50 lp/mm for each zoom configurations and all fields of view are greater than 0.3,and all indexes satisfy the command of system.

Abstract:Owing to the emergence of new zoom elements such as liquid lenses, a type of optical system that achieves zoom without relying on lens displacement has gradually developed. However, the current research on the miniaturization of such non-displacement zoom systems is insufficient, and the design methods and theories are relatively lacking. In this paper, we take the design of a five-group zoom system based on three liquid lenses as an example and propose a design method applicable to small non-displacement zoom systems. First, the zoom equations of the system are derived using Gaussian brackets, and the corresponding constraints are designed. Based on the zoom equations and the constrains, the traversal ideation is employed to construct the solution space of structural parameters. Subsequently, a combined coarse-and-fine evaluation function is proposed to comprehensively examine the performance of the optical system. Through the evaluation function, the optimal initial structural parameters are calculated within the solution space. Finally, the final structure of the system is obtained through optimization using the optical design software. The results indicate that the length of the zoom system does not exceed 60 mm, the zoom range is 9–13 mm, and the zoom ratio is 1.44. The system exhibits excellent imaging quality and enables smooth and continuous zooming.

Abstract:Optical zoom system plays an important role application in high precision opto-electronic imaging for the high-speed moving target imaging. The novel stabilized zoom stabilization system based on deformable mirrors(DMs) has a future application prospect in integrating fast doubling, accurate focusing, image plane stabilization and aberration compensation. In this paper, we design a reflective zoom structure including the front group and the rear group. The double DMs and the reflective mirrors form the Combined Telephoto and Reversed-Telephoto structure, which achieve the zoom of the system and correct the off-axis aberration during the whole focal length. The fixed reflective mirror in rear group is used to compress the optical length and keep the image stabilized. We make full use of effective diameter range of DMs and the flexible deformations amount of actuator strokes to achieve the freeform surfaces in the system. It achieves a high zoom ratio of 14.52 and 5 milliseconds of zooming time from Wide-angle and Telephoto. This optical system is conducive to further achieving high zoom efficiency and high speed in the stabilized zoom system based on DMs.

Abstract:In order to find a more simple and effective method to solve the formula of the all lens elements movable zoom lens,in this article,the computer program is adopted.With the given initial parameters (magnification of all elements、distance),the initial data are computed for the target optical system and the system data are optimized using the restrictive conditions (two tangent data difference、curvature of the zoom curve and total length of the system) as the command.Then the optical-power distribution which satisfies the condition is given out and the data of the optical system are computed.In order to test the practivity of this method,a four movable components zoom lens is designed as an example by using the initial data,given by the computer program,on the optical design software.Comparing the data of the optical power distribution with the Zemax simulation results,we find they agree well with each other,which proves the practicality of the method.

Abstract:Zoom lens with variable focal length is well fit for researching objectives far and near. Design of zoom lens working at mid-wave infrared wavelength (7.7-10.3_m) and its view field 10 degrees is presented. Determination of the initial configuration of the variable and the compensate groups are discussed according to the mechanism compensate curves. The compensate group is determined with positive power. Its focal length changes during a large scope, which is from 300mm to 100mm. And the corresponding F number variables from 3.75 to 1.25. So the residual aberration needs to be carefully corrected. The optimized zoom lens is composed of four group elements, and its performance reaches diffraction limited at each focal position.

Abstract:The focal length of a deformable mirror can be changed by altering its mirror profile or refractive index. With the rapid development of microelectromechanical systems technology, the variations in optical power introduced by refractive and reflective deformable mirrors have been improved, and a stabilized zoom system based on these deformable mirrors has thus become a hotspot for quick zooming and better image quality. In this paper, we discuss the domestic and foreign research on these kinds of systems, which can be divided into three categories—refractive zoom systems, all-reflective zoom systems, and catadioptric zoom systems—to indicate the differences in optical path and the deformable mirrors used. The initial theoretical layout, the verification experiment, and the performance of these systems are discussed. Above all, their characteristics and operating temperatures are highlighted, and these three types of deformable mirrors are then compared to find the possible layout for a zoom stabilization system based on two reflective deformable mirrors. Our study can help in the selection of the most suitable types of deformable mirrors and in discussions of a prototype of a stabilized zoom system. A system performance and defects radar chart for these three types of system is drawn to facilitate the selection of deformable mirrors for system design. Finally, ideas for further work to handle the challenges confronted by deformable mirrors are discussed.

Abstract:A four-group stabilized zoom system using two liquid lenses and two fixed lens groups is proposed. We describe the design principle, realization, and the testing of a 5.06:1 zoom system. The realized effective focal length (EFL) range is 6.93 mm to 35.06 mm, and the field of view (FOV) range is 8 degrees to 40 degrees. The system can zoom fast when liquid lens 1's (L-1's) optical power take the value from 0.0087 mm(-1) to 0.0192 mm(-1) and liquid lens 2's (L-2's) optical power take the value from 0.0185 mm(-1) to -0.01 mm(-1). Response time of the realized zoom system was less than 2.5 ms, and the settling time was less than 15 ms.The analysis of elements' parameters and the measurement of lens performance not only verify the design principle further, but also show the zooming process by the use of two liquid lenses. The system is useful for motion carriers e.g., robot, ground vehicle, and unmanned aerial vehicles considering that it is fast, reliable, and miniature.

Abstract:For now, telecentric system and zoom system have been extensively implemented in machine vision, industrial inspection, etc. However, studies on optical systems with both telecentric and zoom functions are still rare. To improve this situation, we present the design method of the telecentric zoom system with four focus tunable lenses (FTL) and a moving aperture stop (STOP) by applying Gaussian brackets and lens modules. We first improve the Gaussian brackets to achieve the initial parameter solution of the telecentric zoom FTL system, then we introduce a selection method to find the initial structural parameters with sufficient potential for optical design. After that, we use the lens module method to design the initial structure of the optical system, we also expand the combination method of the lens modules which contains an FTL. Finally, the initial structures of a 4X image-side telecentric zoom FTL system are constructed as an example and then optimized using CODEV. As a result, we get an image-side telecentric zoom FTL system with an F/# of 4, a zoom range of 20 mm to 80 mm, an image plane size of 8 mm, and a total length of 218 mm, which performs well in telecentricity control, distortion control, and aberration correction.

Abstract:According to the large aperture, long focal length zoom system design, the structure of the optical system based on the modular concept is proposed. The structure is constituted of an afocal compression telescope and a zoom system. The parts of each other are individually designed. The aberrations of them are independently. Because of this, the alignment of the system and the difficulty of test are greatly reduced. It is easily replaced by changing the zoom system parts, which can achieve other different focal length and ratio. Using afocal compression telescope greatly reduces the radial aperture of the zoom group, simplifies the system structure and reduces the cost. Meanwhile, the variable stop is placed in the vicinity of the primary mirror. It is instead of the zoom system used in floating variable stop. In addition, the problem about large aperture zoom system pupil matching is solved perfectly. In this article, four methods of pupil matching are given and the advantages and disadvantages of them are analyzed. Using this optical structure, a zoom system is designed, which is working in the visible wavelength band with variable focal length between 900mm and 4500mm, 500mm maximum aperture. The axial dimension of the system is less than 650mm. The maximum diameter of zoom system parts is less than 40 mm. Moreover, the distances of the zoom group and compensating group are all less than 60 mm. Besides, the motion curves of each other are given in the article. The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) values of the system are greater than 0.3 at 48lp/mm across different focal length and field pointing on the axis. The design results show that the imaging quality is excellent, the structure is compact, and the alignment and test are easy. The imaging requirements of zoom system are all satisfied.

Abstract:To facilitate zoom lens design,a systematic zoom lens design approach,based on mixed lens modules,is proposed in this paper,which consists of paraxial lens design,lens type determination, and aberration design.During paraxial lens design,Gaussian brackets and matrix optics are adopted, with which the relationship between component interval distances and component focal lengths can be easily determined.A lens module classification model is trained,with which the lens type can be determined from its thin lens parameters.More than 80% of the lens components have been successfully classified by the classification model.Mixed lens modules,namely thin lens modules and thick lens modules,are applied for aberration design of lens components,with which the component aberrations can be easily balanced and some practical considerations,such as interval distances between lens elements and components collisions,can be handled simultaneously.At last,an example is provided,which shows the detailed procedure of zoom lens design using mixed lens modules.
