Abstract:Porous hierarchical SnO2 ceramics is achieved by oxidizing the flowerlike SnS2 precursors, which are obtained via hydrothermal reaction between SnCl4 and thioacetamide. The release rate of the sulfur ions from the sulfur source plays the most important role in the formation of flowerlike microstructures which define the morphology of the resulted SnO2. The obtained SnO2 by annealing exhibits a porous hierarchical microstructure with large surface-to-volume ratio because of the large and small pores between and in the flowers. The porous hierarchical SnO2 ceramics shows a promising capacity of 1645.5 mA h g (1) at the current of 100 mA g (1), and remains 660.5 mA h g (1) after 20 cycles when used as anode of lithium-ion batteries. The enhanced cycling performance than SnO2 nanoparticles should be due to that the porous hierarchical microstructure could provide more reaction sites and give channels making Li+ transport more efficiently. Abstract:This paper reports a novel self-templating methodology for the formation of SnO(2)-carbon hybrid hollow spheres by using Sn spheres as sacrificing templates. The time-sequenced structural evolution of the templates indicates that the nanoscale Kirkendall effect plays a critical role in the transformation from Sn spheres to the hybrid hollow spheres. Moreover, the as-synthesized SnO(2)-carbon hybrid hollow spheres have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit a much higher initial Coulombic efficiency and better cycling performance than pure SnO(2) hollow spheres.

Abstract:A novel layer-by-layer approach has been developed to synthesize polycrystalline SnO2 hollow spheres with tunable shell thickness and size using SiO2 spheres as a template. The surface of the SiO2 spheres has been first modified by the polyelectrolyte, and subsequently, the compact SnO2 layer has deposited on the surface of the SiO2 spheres through a redox reaction because of the electrostatic attraction between the charged species. After HF etching treatment, the uniform SnO2 hollow spheres have been obtained. The approach presented herein has been extended to synthesize other metal oxide and sulfide hollow spheres such as In2O3 and ZnS. Moreover, the as-synthesized SnO2 hollow spheres have been applied in lithium-ion battery and show improved performance compared with SnO2 nanoparticles. The high surface area and stable hollow structure of the SnO2 hollow spheres may be responsible for the improved performance.

After calcination in air, hierarchical hollow spheres assembled from SnO(2) nanosheets can be obtained. Abstract:Uniform and stable micro-sized SnO2 hollow spheres are prepared by templating against polystyrene microspheres. After being coated with a thin layer of amorphous carbon, the as-obtained SnO2@carbon hollow microspheres are shown to exhibit improved lithium storage properties, delivering a reversible capacity of 570 mA h g(-1) after 50 cycles at a high current density of 400 mA g(-1).

Abstract:Constructing nanostructures with multi-components and delicate architecture exhibits huge potential to improve the lithium storage performance of electrodes. Herein, we report a novel yolk-double-shell structure with complex chemical compositions. Starting with a core-shell structured Co-ZIF@ZnCo-ZIF as a precursor via a simple selenization process, yolk-double-shell polyhedra that assembled by nanosized Co0.85Se@N-doped carbon as the yolk and the first shell and nanosized Co0.85Se@N-doped carbon and ZnSe@N-doped carbon hetero-components as the second shell (marked as Co0.85Se@NC/ZnSe@NC-YDS) are synthesized. Benefiting from their multiple structural advantages, such as high surface area, large pore volume, uniform carbon coating, and intimate heterostructures, Co0.85Se@NC/ZnSe@NC-YDS exhibits high reversible capacity (1047 mA h g-1) and good rate capability for lithium storage. More importantly, even after 3000 cycles at 5.0 A g-1, an impressive reversible capacity of 468 mA h g-1 is retained with no capacity decay. After repeated discharge/charge processes, the integrated yolk-double-shell structure is still reserved, due to its structural and compositional advantages, which contribute to the enhanced rate and cycling performance.

Abstract:Lithium-ion storage materials with significantly improved performance were developed through the hierarchical assemblies of vanadium-based oxide (V2O5 and LiV3O8) nanorods or iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanocrystals using an efficient, continuous aerosol-spray process. Such hierarchically porous spheres, which were made from networks of low-dimension building blocks, result in materials with reduced ion-diffusion length, fast electrolyte diffusion, and structural robustness. Due to their unique hierarchical structure, these spheres exhibit high lithium storage capacity, excellent cycling stability and good rate capability. This work presents a novel synthesis approach toward better lithium-ion storage materials.

Abstract:Tin dioxide (SnO2) has been considered as one of the most promising candidates to surpass the capacity limitation of conventional graphite anode of lithium-ion batteries. However, the tremendous volume change of SnO(2 )generated during cycling process gives rise to poor cycling performance and thus seriously impedes the practical use of SnO2 anode in lithium-ion batteries. It is suggested that fabrication of double-shelled hollow nanostructured SnO2/C composites is expected to be able to solve above problem effectively, but is difficult to be achieved because of the increased complexity of the structures. Herein, we for the first time demonstrate a novel heterogeneous template strategy to facilely fabricate double-shelled hollow SnO2@C nanoparticles (DSH SnO2@C). It is worthy of noting that the double-shelled hollow structure is formed in one-step hydrothermal process, due to the rational adoption of a heterogeneous template and therefore shows facile characteristic. The shells of DSH SnO2@C consist of ultra-fine SnO2 nanocrystals as well as the outer ultra-fine SnO2 nanocrystals are further coated by a thin layer of amorphous carbon, hence have many structural characteristics such as large specific surface area, rich pores, adequate free space, and carbon coating. As expected, the as-prepared DSH SnO2@C presents improved lithium storage performance as an anode for lithium-ion batteries, exhibiting a high capacity of 769 mAh g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1) after even 350 cycles, which is around 98.6% retention of the second cycle. Moreover, thus concept of heterogeneous template strategy may be extended to design and fabrication of other metal oxides-based nanocomposites with double-shelled hollow structures for application in other various fields such as catalysis, drug delivery and sensor. Abstract:Hierarchical SnO2/Fe2O3 hollow spheres are fabricated through the solvothermal method accompanied by a facile solution procedure in the absence of any surfactant. The composition, crystalline structure, morphology, and electrochemical properties of the synthesized product are investigated systematically. The SnO2/Fe2O3 as an anode material in Li-ion batteries demonstrates a better reversible capacity and very good rate capability and cyclic performance compared with pure-phase SnO2 hollow spheres. The greatly enhanced Li-ion storage capability of the SnO2/Fe2O3 hollow spheres is believed to result from the synergy of the two materials, SnO2 and Fe2O3, which provides breathable aggregates for effective buffering of the drastic volume changes during the charge/discharge process. This work reports a promising method for the design and preparation of nanocomposite electrodes for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:In this paper, a versatile facile route to synthesize mesoporous hollow-structured metal oxides is demonstrated using sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microspheres as hard templates. SEM and TEM images show that the Fe2O3, Co3O4 and NiO hollow microspheres are self-assembled by nanorods, nanoparticles and nanosheets, respectively. Hollow and mesoporous structures not only provide enhanced mechanical stabilities to buffer the large volume changes during the charge/discharge processes, but also provide large specific areas for sufficient penetration of electrolyte, thus leading to an excellent cyclic stability and rate capability. As proofs-of-concepts, all of the hollow and mesoporous metal oxides (Fe2O3, Co3O4 and NiO) deliver high initial discharge capacities and good capacity retentions (>80%) after more than 100 cycles in half cells. Most important of all, these assembled full-cells (MxOy(M=Fe, Co, Ni)/LiCoO2) also delivere excellent electrochemical performances. This work clearly demonstrates that the MxOy(M=Fe, Co, Ni)/LiCoO2 configuration are promising alternative high power-density energy storage devices in the near future.

Abstract:We report a simple approach for synthesizing uniform hollow spheres assembled from anatase TiO2 nanosheets with large amount of exposed (001) facets. These hierarchical TiO2 hollow spheres possessing a high specific surface area of 134.9 m(2) g(-1) manifest a high Coulombic efficiency for lithium extraction, excellent capacity retention, and superior rate behaviour owing to the hollow structure and unique crystal faceting of the building blocks.

Abstract:A self-templated strategy is developed to fabricate hierarchical TiO2/SnO2 hollow spheres coated with graphitized carbon (HTSO/GC-HSs) by combined sol-gel processes with hydrothermal treatment and calcination. The as-prepared mesoporous HTSO/GC-HSs present an approximate yolk-double-shell structure, with high specific area and small nanocrystals of TiO2 and SnO2, and thus exhibit superior electrochemical reactivity and stability when used as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. A high reversible specific capacity of about 310 mAh g(-1) at a high current density of 5 A g(-1) can be achieved over 500 cycles indicating very good cycle stability and rate performance.

Abstract:Bimetal oxide with its intricate nanostructure holds great potential for high-performance electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, a facile strategy for the fabrication of hierarchical hollow Co3O4/ZnCo(2)O(4)microspheres is developed, involving a simple solvothermal synthesis and subsequent thermal annealing in air. An aggregation-dissolution-in situ recrystallization structure evolution and growth mechanism is proposed. Benefiting from the unique hierarchical hollow structure with rational porosity, synergistic effect of bimetal components, and better electrical conductivity, the as-synthesized Co3O4/ZnCo(2)O(4)hierarchical hollow microstructure shows outstanding lithium storage properties. As a result, a superior rate capability (842 mA h g(-1)at a current density of 4 A g(-1)) and an excellent cycle life (754 mA h g(-1)after 800 cycles at a current density of 2 A g(-1)) are obtained. The presented strategy could be applicable to the synthesis of mixed metal oxide hierarchical hollow structures with rational porosity for high-performance LIBs.

Abstract:Hierarchical solid and hollow microspheres composed of oriented aligned cone-like SnO2 nanoparticles are prepared by a hydrothermal route using either NH4F or NaF, as morphology controlling agents. Their structures and morphology evolution are comprehensively characterized by TEM, SEM, XRD, XPS and the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, and a formation mechanism is proposed. Both solid and hollow SnO2 microspheres are formed via an Ostwald ripening process undergoing different reorganization paths in the presence of either NH4F or NaF. The solid spheres preferentially recrystallize starting from the cores and grow by consuming adjacent smaller particles, while the hollow spheres preferentially recrystallize starting from outer shells and grow by consuming the entrapped core materials via the mechanism of solid evacuation. As gas sensing materials, both solid and hollow SnO2 microspheres demonstrate sensitive and selective response to several hazardous gases, such as formaldehyde, ammonia, benzene, acetone, and methanol. As lithium storage materials, the hierarchical SnO2 hollow spheres show a higher charge/discharge capacity and better cyclic performance than the hierarchical SnO2 solid spheres. The discharge capacity of the hierarchical SnO2 hollow spheres is 187 mAh g−1 higher than the solid spheres for up to 50 discharge/charge cycles.

Abstract:Hollow SnO2 spheres with oriented cone-like SnO2 nanoparticle shells were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal process using NaF as the morphology controlling agent. The resulting hollow SnO2 sphere electrode exhibits high reversible capacity (initial charge and discharge capacities of 1342.9 and 1947.6 mAh/g at 0.1 C and 1235.4 and 1741.3 mAh/g at 1 C) and good cycling stability (discharge capacities maintained 758.1 and 449.6 mAh/g after 100 cycles at 0.1 C and 1 C, respectively). Good rate performance was also obtained (1234.5 mAh/g at 0.1 C, 884.2 mAh/g at 0.2 C, 692.4 mAh/g at 0.5 C, 497.6 mAh/g at 1 C, 315.8 mAh/g at 2 C and 80.6 mAh/g at 5 C, and more importantly, when the current density returns to 0.1 C, a capacity of 869.6 mAh/g can be recovered. The observed electrochemical performance can attributed to the hollow structure, the use of NaF for morphology control and the unique oriented cone like shell of the particles. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
