Abstract:It is well known that one cannot image directly through a nonlinear medium, as intensity-dependent phase changes distort signals as they propagate. Indirect methods can be used 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , but none has allowed for the measurement of internal wave mixing and dynamics. Recently, the reconstruction of nonlinear pulse propagation in fibres was demonstrated by generalizing the techniques of digital holography 7 , 8 to the nonlinear domain 9 . The method involves two steps: (1) recording the total field (both amplitude and phase) exiting a nonlinear medium and (2) numerically back-propagating the wavefunction. Here, we extend this process to two-dimensional spatial beams and experimentally demonstrate it in a self-defocusing photorefractive crystal, giving examples in soliton formation, dispersive radiation and imaging. For known nonlinearity, the technique enables reconstruction of wave dynamics within the medium and suggests new methods of super-resolved imaging, including subwavelength microscopy and lithography. For unknown nonlinearity, the method facilitates modelling and characterization of the optical response.
Digital Holography of Particle Fields: Reconstruction by Use of Complex Amplitude.

Abstract:Digital holography appears to be a strong contender as the next-generation technology for holographic diagnostics of particle fields and holographic particle image velocimetry for flow field measurement. With the digital holographic approach, holograms are directly recorded by a digital camera and reconstructed numerically. This not only eliminates wet chemical processing and mechanical scanning, but also enables the use of complex amplitude information inaccessible by optical reconstruction, thereby allowing flexible reconstruction algorithms to achieve optimization of specific information. However, owing to the inherently low pixel resolution of solid-state imaging sensors, digital holography gives poor depth resolution for images, a problem that severely impairs the usefulness of digital holography especially in densely populated particle fields. This paper describes a technique that significantly improves particle axial-location accuracy by exploring the reconstructed complex amplitude information, compared with other numerical reconstruction schemes that merely mimic traditional optical reconstruction. This novel method allows accurate extraction of particle locations from forward-scattering particle holograms even at high particle loadings.

Abstract:Based on super-resolution imaging theory, a beam scanning super-resolution digital holographic technique is proposed. Applying Fresnel diffraction theory, this technique is proved to enlarge the equivalent dimension of CCD and increase the cutoff frequency of optical system, so this method can improve the imaging resolution of digital holography. The simulation verify the validity and feasibility of this method. The method of hologram processing and reconstruction is summarized. Compared with synthetic-aperture digital holography, the proposed technique needs not to move CCD camera and change the angle of reference waves that correspond to different CCD camera position for avoiding under-sampling.

Abstract:We present a new method for numerically reconstructing holography image on tilted planes within the Fresnel domain. The method is based on the Fresnel diffraction algorithm and object wave rotation transform. By suitable rotation the object wave on recording plane and once fast Fourier transformation this method can be implemented. The proposed method can render the real image of the hologram not only on parallel plane but also on the tilted. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the method for a single axis rotation.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a microwave far-field image reconstruction modality with the transverse resolution exceeding the diffraction limit by using a single layer of highly nonlinear metamaterial. The harmonic fields of the nonlinear metamaterial surface allow the far-field propagation of wave fronts with spatial frequencies several times higher than that of the fundamental field. Near-field images can thus be mathematically recovered from the far-field patterns of the harmonic fields.

Abstract:The three-dimensional holography technique offers an efficient and convenient tool for storing depth information of the object and provides more realistic images compared to the two-dimensional case, which has been widely used in the fields of optical tweezers, image encryption, and optical microscopy. However, such a three-dimensional nonlinear holography technique is still lacking in the field of nonlinear optics. Here, we demonstrate the realization of three-dimensional nonlinear optical holograms. Without loss of generality, a second-order nonlinearity is used in our experiment and the generated second harmonic with multiplane patterns at different depths is dynamically realized. This study opens up the field of three-dimensional spatial nonlinear harmonic manipulation and may have applications in all-optical wave-band three-dimensional optical imaging, parallel micromachining, holographic displays, and so on.

Abstract:This work presents, for the first time the optical generation of non-diffracting beams via photorefractive holography. Optical generation of non-diffracting beams using conventional optics components is difficult and, in some instances, unfeasible, as it is wave fields given by superposition of non-diffracting beams. It is known that computer generated holograms and spatial light modulators (SLMs) successfully generate such beams. With photorefractive holography technique, the hologram of a non-diffracting beam is constructed (recorded) and reconstructed (reading) optically in a nonlinear photorefractive medium. The experimental realization of a non-diffracting beam was made in a photorefractive holography setup using a photorefractive Bi12SiO20 (BSO) crystal as the holographic recording medium, where the non-diffracting beams, the Bessel beam arrays and superposition of co-propagating Bessel beams (Frozen Waves) were obtained experimentally. The experimental results are in agreement with the theoretically predicted results, presenting excellent prospects for implementation of this technique for dynamical systems at applications in optics and photonics.
Accurate Reconstruction in Digital Holographic Microscopy Using Fresnel Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet Transform

Abstract:Digital holography is a promising measurement method in the fields of bio-medicine and micro-electronics. But the captured images of digital holography are severely polluted by the speckle noise because of optical scattering and diffraction. Via analyzing the properties of Fresnel diffraction and the topographies of micro-structures, a novel reconstruction method based on the dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) is proposed. This algorithm is shift-invariant and capable of obtaining sparse representations for the diffracted signals of salient features, thus it is well suited for multiresolution processing of the interferometric holograms of directional morphologies. An explicit representation of orthogonal Fresnel DT-CWT bases and a specific filtering method are developed. This method can effectively remove the speckle noise without destroying the salient features. Finally, the proposed reconstruction method is compared with the conventional Fresnel diffraction integration and Fresnel wavelet transform with compressive sensing methods to validate its remarkable superiority on the aspects of topography reconstruction and speckle removal.

Abstract:Abstract The presence of a scattering medium in the imaging path between an object and an observer is known to severely limit the visual acuity of the imaging system. We present an approach to circumvent the deleterious effects of scattering, by exploiting spectral correlations in scattered wavefronts. Our Synthetic Wavelength Holography (SWH) method is able to recover a holographic representation of hidden targets with sub-mm resolution over a nearly hemispheric angular field of view. The complete object field is recorded within 46 ms, by monitoring the scattered light return in a probe area smaller than 6 cm × 6 cm. This unique combination of attributes opens up a plethora of new Non-Line-of-Sight imaging applications ranging from medical imaging and forensics, to early-warning navigation systems and reconnaissance. Adapting the findings of this work to other wave phenomena will help unlock a wider gamut of applications beyond those envisioned in this paper.

Image-guided Computational Holographic Wavefront Shaping

Abstract:Optical imaging through scattering media is an important challenge in a variety of fields ranging from microscopy to autonomous vehicles. While advanced wavefront shaping techniques have offered significant breakthroughs in the past decade, current techniques still require a known guide-star and a high-resolution spatial-light-modulator (SLM), or a very large number of measurements, and are limited in their correction field-of-view. Here, we introduce a guide-star free noninvasive approach that is able to correct more than $3\cdot 10^5$ scattered modes using just $100$ holographically measured scattered random light fields. This is achieved by computationally emulating an image-guided wavefront-shaping experiment, where several 'virtual SLMs' are simultaneously optimized to maximize the reconstructed image quality. Our method shifts the burden from the physical hardware to a digital, naturally-parallelizable computation, leveraging state-of-the-art automatic-differentiation optimization tools used for the training of neural-networks. We demonstrate the flexibility and generality of this framework by applying it to imaging through various complex samples and imaging modalities, including anisoplanatic multi-conjugate correction of highly scattering layers, lensless-endoscopy in multicore fibers, and acousto-optic tomography. The versatility, effectiveness, and generality of the presented approach have great potential for rapid noninvasive imaging in diverse applications.

Abstract:While digital holographic imaging can record both light intensity and phase information, its photodetector resolution lags behind that of optical dry plates, often resulting in a compromise between resolution and field of view. To overcome this limitation, we present an imaging method that combines Kramers–Kronig relations with wavelength division multiplexing, enabling large-field digital holographic imaging without sacrificing resolution. We validate the effectiveness of this method through simulation and example experiment, and demonstrate successful expansion of the field of view by 3 times with three color lasers, while improving the resolution.

Abstract:Scattering of waves, e.g., light, due to medium inhomogeneity is ubiquitous in physics and is considered detrimental for many applications. Wavefront shaping technology is a powerful tool to defeat scattering and focus light through inhomogeneous media, which is vital for optical imaging, communication, therapy, etc. Wavefront shaping based on the scattering matrix (SM) is extremely useful in handling dynamic processes in the linear regime. However, the implementation of such a method for controlling light in nonlinear media is still a challenge and has been unexplored until now. We report a method to determine the SM of nonlinear scattering media with second-order nonlinearity. We experimentally demonstrate its feasibility in wavefront control and realize focusing of nonlinear signals through strongly scattering quadratic media. Moreover, we show that statistical properties of this SM still follow the random matrix theory. The scattering-matrix approach of nonlinear scattering medium opens a path toward nonlinear signal recovery, nonlinear imaging, microscopic object tracking, and complex environment quantum information processing.
Reconstruction of A Complex Object from Two In-Line Holograms

Abstract:A novel numerical algorithm is proposed to reconstruct a complex object from two Gabor in-line holograms. With this algorithm, both the real and imaginary parts of the complex amplitude of the wave front in the object field can be retrieved, and the "twin-image" noise is eliminated at the same time. Therefore, the complex refractive index of the object can be obtained without disturbance. Digital simulations are given to prove the effectiveness of this algorithm. Some practical experimental conditions are investigated by use of error estimation.
Dynamic Manipulation of Nonlinear Talbot Effect with Structured Light.

Abstract:The nonlinear Talbot effect has sparked considerable interest of researchers since it was proposed in recent years because it has many advantages compared with the Talbot effect in linear optics. In previous researches, such a nonlinear Talbot effect is only observed in nonlinear photonic crystals, which cannot dynamically manipulate in real time. Here, we report and experimentally demonstrate the high efficiency and dynamic manipulation of such a nonlinear Talbot effect with structured light. Different from the previous scheme, the nonlinear self-imaging effect observed in our experiment originates from the spatial phase structure of the incident fundamental frequency light. In our experiments, integer and fractional second-harmonic Talbot self-imaging is observed. Our results not only extend a novel technique for dynamic manipulation of the nonlinear Talbot effects, but also may have potential applications in parallel optical lithography, optical imaging, and optical computing.
Study on Extending the Depth of Field in Reconstructed Image for A Micro Digital Hologram

Abstract:Digital micro holography offers an in-situ, non-contact and three-dimensional way to explore the microscopic world. However, as it is difficult to focalize the whole object in one single reconstructed image, the application of digital micro holography to cases with a large longitudinal object volume is limited by the microscopes depth of field. By extending the depth of field in reconstructed micro holograms in the wavelet domain, this paper fully takes advantage of numerical reconstruction algorithms to solve this problem. First, a recorded hologram is rebuilt using the wavelet transform approach by setting up an appropriate longitudinal interval to obtain a series of reconstructed hologram planes. Then each plane is decomposed with wavelet into its sub-images of both high and low frequencies. Furthermore, the local variance of the maximum intensity gradients of the high- and low-frequency coefficients is calculated and utilized as the focus criterion. Finally, the image planes are fused into a single one with the depth of field extended to a large extent. The feasibility and robustness of this reconstruction procedure for both continuum and particle fields are investigated. One of the demonstrations is made in an experiment of a tilted continuum:carbon fiber. It is different from most of the previous applications where the interrogated is the particles and where the area involved is parallel to the CCD. The carbon fiber gets successfully reconstructed in three dimensions, and the measurement errors of its diameter are presented together with the reconstruction distances. Another is an experiment of a dispersed particle field:micro transparent particles are generated by an ultrasonic atomizer, for which the reconstruction procedure achieves an extended depth of field. In addition, a numerical model based on generalized Lorenz-Mie theory is used to simulate the holograms of both opaque and transparent particles of 1-15 m in diameter. Variations of the longitudinal location errors with the Fraunhofer number are analyzed, and comparisons are made between the results of opaque and transparent particles. Both the experimental and simulation outcomes show that this reconstruction procedure is a reliable one to acquire an extended-depth-of-field hologram for both the continuum and the dispersed particle fields, and then to accurately measure the objects.

Abstract:Nonlinear metasurfaces incorporate many of the functionalities of their linear counterparts such as wavefront shaping but simultaneously they perform nonlinear optical transformations. This dual functionality leads to a rather unintuitive physical behavior which is still widely unexplored for many photonic applications. The nonlinear processes render some basic principles governing the functionality of linear metasurfaces not directly applicable, such as the superposition principle and the geometric optics approximation. On the other hand, nonlinear metasurfaces facilitate new phenomena that are not possible in the linear regime. Here, we study the imaging of objects through a dielectric nonlinear metalens. We illuminate objects by infrared light and record their generated images at the visible third-harmonic wavelengths. We revisit the classical lens theory and suggest a generalized Gaussian lens equation for nonlinear imaging, verified both experimentally and analytically. We also demonstrate experimentally higher-order spatial correlations facilitated by the nonlinear metalens, resulting in additional image features.
