Abstract:The object of the study is clothing as a sociocultural phenomenon, a product of material and spiritual cultures. The evolution of clothing is closely related to sociocultural changes in society. The subject of the study is the transformation of clothing in China under the influence of political, economic, social, and aesthetic factors after the beginning of Chinese economic reform and opening up policy. The significant changes have taken place in Chinese clothing, the main of which was the transition from a uniform style of clothing for the whole country to a variety of fashion and styles, as well as the revival of traditional clothing. The transformation in the style and production cycle of clothing in China is based on objective (technology development, market laws, global fashion trends) and subjective reasons (psychology, personal preferences and aesthetic tastes of consumers). There is always a concept behind the behavior in clothes, and the desire for beauty is the main driving force behind the development of clothing. The social psychology of imitation and difference contributes to the spread of fashion trends in clothing. The author's special contribution to the topic is a detailed examination of the impact on the transformation of clothing of political, economic, sociocultural, aesthetic factors, as well as cultural exchanges and folk traditions. The author traces the sequence of fashion trends in China in recent decades. Сontemporary changes in Chinese clothing culture are not limited to simply borrowing Western trends, but are accompanied by the emergence of postmodern ideas and the promotion of the globalization process, which leads not only to the technological and design enrichment of clothing characteristics in China, but also to the growth of cultural awareness and the revivalization of traditional and local cultures.

Abstract:Chinese sartorial style, like many cultures, has been defined, formalized and articulated to its population by hierarchical definition and visual association. Menswear styles have transitioned from strict Imperial codes, to westernized adoption, designed to shape a new modernism, as various leadership regimes imposed and defined dress codes to implement political and cultural structures. Sustainable practices were developed through the design and construction methods of Imperial garments and as a response to low resources, famine and inefficient management systems during the early years of the People’s Republic of China. This period was characterized by rationing for fabrics, recycling and the re-invention of existing garments. Through a contemporary lens, this can be viewed as an integrated sustainable approach to the mass clothing of a significantly sized population. However, intervening regimes including the post-Imperial Nationalist leadership and the post-Mao Communist leadership cultivated a new visual identity for the Chinese population as westernization became the prefix for modernization. This article aims to map the historical development of menswear as cultural capital in China, to contextualize sustainable practices in the production of garments and define how these practices were systematically and repeatedly rejected in favour of new consumerism. It also aims to historically define the role of menswear in China as a representation of the nation’s outward-facing international image and ambitions as a serious and contemporary player, within the global political and cultural community.

Abstract:The elements of traditional clothing must take fashion as its carrier to transfer the value because fashion is the main factor that makes Chinese traditional culture enjoyed by other ethnic groups. Chinese Traditional Clothing Arts has its profound cultural background and broad space for re-creation which is inexhaustible inspiration sources for designers. However, due to a late start, there is still a large gap between the design and theoretical research of Chinese-style clothing and other designs with strong American and Japanese colors in the market. This paper takes the Chinese traditional elements used by fashion designers at home and abroad as the breakthrough point. Through in-depth study of Chinese Traditional Clothing Arts and its cultural connotation, it explores the integration between traditional Chinese elements and fashion design and also puts forward some distinctive ideas about Chinese clothing fashion design.

Abstract:Dress is a part of Chinese cultural heritage that has fascinated Western audiences for centuries. On the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China, there are items related to textiles, embroideries and certain examples of Chinese clothing. This article analyses issues connected with the different uses of Chinese dress in the West. To fashion theorists such as Bell, Wilson, Sapir and Veblen, Chinese dress was the opposite of modern Western clothing and did not deserve to be called fashion. However, researchers such as Welters, Lillethun and Craik have opposed viewing fashion theory through a Eurocentric prism in their desire to rewrite fashion history. Fashion designers drew ideas from China, treating it as a source of inspiration to create their own original designs. For some of them, such as Yves Saint Laurent, it was a China of their imagination. In certain cases, they made use of porcelain designs or dragon motifs in their own collections, for instance, in designs by Cavalli and Ford. The incorporation of Chinese garments into Western collections has also become visible.

Abstract:Mao's New World: Political Culture in the Early Peoples Republic, by Chang-tai Hung. Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2011. xvi + 352 pp. US$39.95/£26.50 (hardcover).Chang-tai Hung s study of political culture in China in the 1 950s is rich in detailed insights that complement his earlier treatment of the entwined subjects of politics and culture in War and Popular Culture: Resistance in Modern China, 1937-1945. The political culture in question is the one very carefully designed and imposed on the Chinese people by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) during the first decade after the 1949 Revolution. Hung shows that the CCP was persuaded that adroit manipulation of culture was every bit as critical to its legitimacy as were its political and economic policies. He focuses on the process by which the CCP conceived and sought to foster "shared values, collective visions, common attitudes, and public expectations" that underscored "the primacy of politics in shaping everyday life" (p. 8). He sheds light on intra-Party deliberations about how best to design a symbolic cultural code that could solidify the Communists' newly gained power while also enabling them to rally the population to ongoing economic, political and social transformation. Influenced by the anthropological insights profitably embraced by New Cultural History, Hung discusses fascinating subjects such as the Party's use of pageantry (song, dance, holidays, parades), architecture, city planning, visual art, museums and memorials to martyrs, to construct an internally unified system of political meaning that had a powerful pedagogical and disciplinary effect on the populace. He makes crystal clear that the CCP approached the enormous project of political culture creation with full energy, that the process could be fraught with tensions and that even the highest leaders, especially Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong, were intimately involved.Hung draws liberally on scholarly writing on the political culture of the French Revolution of 1789 and the Bolshevik Revolution. Since the Russian Revolution was also a Communist one, and because the Soviets had a direct influence on the CCP, he naturally emphasizes that comparison over the French one. Hung shows that the CCP borrowed heavily from the Soviet model and that post- 1949 Chinese political culture must be viewed as part of the larger story of 20th-century Communism. These are not new observations, but Hung goes beyond mere assertion to demonstrate how they operated. At the same time, he emphasizes divergence from the Soviet model, noting many instances when, driven by nationalistic considerations, CCP leaders rejected Soviet techniques in favor of ones more congruent with Chinese cultural tradition. …

From Symbols to Spirit: Changing Conceptions of National Identity in Chinese Fashion

Abstract:This article explores the evolution of conceptions of national identity in contemporary Chinese fashion by analyzing Chinese designers and their work over the last thirty years. It focuses on the post-Mao years of “opening up and reform” since 1978 and draws evidence from a textual analysis of published reports and interviews with a selection of established and emerging designers. This study shows that contemporary Chinese fashion designers still hark to a notion of “Chineseness.” This invocation of an essential and identifiable “Chinese” quality is a result of China's nationalistic education curriculum but is also a mechanism by which Chinese fashion designers seek to gain rapid recognition and a distinctive place in the international community. This distinctive identity facilitates their competitiveness on the global fashion stage. This article shows that conceptions of national identity in Chinese fashion have evolved from the promotion of concrete “traditional Chinese” symbols to more amorphous ideas about “the Chinese spirit.” This spirit is manifest in two particular styles of recent years. First, the works of the “Zen” designers that seek to invoke “Oriental” ideas of peacefulness, calm, and harmony by adopting pale or neutral colors, natural fabrics, and naturally flowing shapes. Second, the designers that invoke images of “modern” China, either by sourcing inspiration from contemporary daily life or rejuvenating traditional Chinese elements with a modern look. This article argues that the evolution from the use of traditional Chinese symbols to the Chinese spirit within the fashion design world signifies a new form of Chinese nationalism: instead of delivering Chinese culture in an explicit, direct, and exterior form, Chinese designers have switched to convey their unique “Chineseness” in a subtle, indirect, and hidden form. Such evolution is a result of modernization, hybridization, and competition between the twin tensions of nationalism and globalization.

Abstract:The development of the Hanfu Culture youth movement in China has been going on for more than ten years. The purpose of this study is to clarify the importance of the historical influence of ancient fashion on modern Hanfu costume and its perception by the youth of the country. The object of the study is social relations. An empirical survey using the example of young residents of Chengdu showed that fans of the "Hanfu culture" make up the absolute majority, and these are mainly women of a wide age range and Han youth with a higher cultural level with a good education. The author proves that the main goals of the Hanfu youth movement are: inheritance, dissemination and popularization of Hanfu culture; development and innovation of Hanfu culture. Based on the conducted surveys and tests, the author concludes that the rise of the youth "Hanfu culture" is mainly due to the following reasons: the awakening of national identity, inspired by the ongoing development of globalization; the increase in national consciousness caused by the emphasis on historical consciousness in domestic policy towards ethnic minorities. The following methods and methodology were used in the research process: Analysis of historical sources: historical documents, images, artifacts and literature; Questionnaires: among various population groups; Personal survey; Comparative analysis. The methodology included a comprehensive approach to the study of the historical context and its impact on modern fashion. The presented article explores the historical influence of ancient fashion on modern street fashion, taking into account questionnaires, personal survey and analysis of historical time periods and forms of Chinese Hanfu costume. The main conclusions of the study are to identify the significant influence of ancient fashion on modern street fashion trends, as well as to understand the importance of preserving historical heritage in modern fashion. A special contribution of the author to the research of the topic is an integrated approach to the analysis of historical data and opinions of various groups of society, which allowed us to get a more complete picture of the influence of ancient fashion on modern culture. The novelty of the research lies in the use of a combination of questionnaire methods, personal survey and analysis of historical forms to study this topic, which allowed us to obtain unique results and a deep understanding of the evolution of fashion.

Abstract:One globalization paradigm argues that developing countries will increasingly resemble Western societies. Although influenced by Western trends, I argue that global consumerism will not make most Chinese abandon traditional values and adopt a different and totally Western consumer culture. This article, which is based on empirical evidence, stresses the role of culture and how it affects people’s strategies toward economic decision-making. I explore the changing values before and after the opening up policy, and how they influenced consumption patterns in different eras. The Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) in China was a campaign designed to pursue a purer form of communism and led to a distinctive set of cultural values and ideologies, resulting in unique consumption patterns. “Status goods” during this period were based on a person’s “revolutionary background” and loyalty to Chairman Mao, rather than on individual consumption preferences. After the opening up policy, consumer behavior moved closer to the patterns found in Western capitalist societies, but the mechanisms that drive this consumption are quite different. Chinese traditional values were challenged but did not disappear, and the impact of the Cultural Revolution also had a profound influence on those who lived through it. Contemporary Chinese consumers selectively choose certain cultural values from a range of options in order to legitimize their spending decisions.

Implementation of Chinese-styled branding in global fashion: ‘Guochao’ as a rising cultural identity

Abstract:Culture-specific Chinese-styled branding as a rising trend in cultural and branding studies has provided new discourse for the discussion on the national identity of Chineseness or chinoiserie that has long existed, with further reflections on the Chinese fashion brand design known as ‘Guochao’, which has become an increasingly ubiquitous new conceptual identity in the past five years. Chinese fashion brands are changing their peripheral cultural status and impacting global fashion, transforming the global recognition of Chinese national identity and style in the field of fashion. This article investigates this emerging phenomenon in the global fashion system and theorizes ‘Guochao’ as a rising cultural identity that reconfigures and readdresses the national identity in Chinese fashion branding practices in terms of its connotations and industry applications. It shows that the ‘Guochao’ identity can be separated into two sub-connotations: one that addresses the connotations of ‘Guo’ that symbolize, rejuvenate and rematerialize Chinese historical and material culture, and one that emphasizes the ‘Chao’ discourse, featuring subtle Chinese symbolism that incorporates strong western street style and further blurs the boundaries in the West‐East aesthetic binary system. Through case studies on the brand designs and campaigns of two Chinese designer brands that are paradigmatic of the ‘Guo’ identity, Angel Chen and MUKZIN, and two classic Chinese sportswear brands that are representatives of the ‘Chao’ identity, Li-Ning and Warrior Shanghai, the theoretical connotations of ‘Guochao’ as a rising cultural identity in Chinese-styled branding are discussed. This article theorizes ‘Guochao’ as a recreated representative cultural identity in global fashion that challenges the world’s understanding of chinoiserie in the field of fashion and further showcases the popularization of Chinese-styled branding in Chinese fashion.

Abstract:Based on previous research on names and naming practices, I propose three suggestions to Bao et al. (2021), which investigated historical changes in given names of Han Chinese in China between 1920 and 2005. Their study analyzed a one-shot cross-sectional survey conducted in 2005 and reported that unique names increased from 1920 to 2005. The authors concluded that China became more individualistic over time for the period. However, three questions have remained unanswered in Bao et al. (2021). First, were the samples of older birth cohorts truly representative? Second, did unique names increase only after the 1970s? Third, how are the historical changes in average name length interpreted? Answering these three questions would contribute to a further understanding of the historical changes in given names and their underlying psychological/cultural shifts in China.

Abstract:Ethnic clothing has long been a value-laden visual index to define, display, and, more recently, commodify ethnicity in China's ethnic politics, especially its role in the imaging and othering processes by the state and mainstream society. The question that needs further exploration is the negotiating processes that ethnic members strategically engage as part of the encounters. Through bringing traditional Dai ethnic clothing back to style, a recent fashion in Xishuangbanna, southwest China, provides an opportunity to expand our understanding of the interplay between self-conscious sartorial practices, the exercises of ethnic self-representation, and the politics of ethnicity (re)construction in China's contemporary minority regions. This article addresses not only what kind of collective Dai-ness (especially Dai femininity) these fashion-makers have crafted through their redesigning of Dai clothing but also their capability to carry out these exercises as central agents within the larger structure of the state. It particularly explores the question of "how it works"—the mechanism through which ethnic members navigate China's political-economic-technological power circuits, rework the state and mainstream discourses as direct participants, and turn their sartorial practices into a communicative channel to reconfigure ethnicity in their own fashion.

Abstract:Dramatic changes have occurred in Chinese society over the past three decades. Many of these changes are attributable to the government’s economic reforms presided over, firstly by MAO Zedong’s successor DENG Xiaoping, and following DENG, JIANG Zemin, HU Jintao and XI Jinping. In this chapter, we focus on changes that have led to a revised understanding of culture. According to a Chinese Communist Party definition, informed by historical materialism, culture ‘in a broad sense, refers to the sum total of all the material and spiritual wealth created by human beings in the course of the historical development of society; in a narrow sense, culture refers to ideology and related institutions and organizations’ (Cihai: Sea of Words. Chinese Encyclopedia 1989, p. 1731). However, over the past three decades, the Chinese government has voluntarily relinquished control over many aspects of cultural production in exchange for the potential benefits of cohesion and increased productivity that social liberalization is seen to promote. Inevitably the market, rather than government propaganda, has become the arbiter of people’s cultural tastes (Gerth 2010). It is important to bear in mind, however, that broadening of consumption practices does not necessarily constitute cultural pluralism. Indeed, the extent to which culture is commercializable remains contentious. In the view of conservatives, culture cannot be left to the forces of the market; yet the same conservatives assert that China’s culture should be globally competitive.

Abstract:After the reform and opening up, a huge fashion market was created in China. The Zhejiang area has been a silk producing area since ancient times. In the 1990’s, it changed to the production area of women’s clothing (Hangzhou Women’s Fashion) with high competitiveness in China. This study investigated the establishment process of Hangzhou Women’s Fashion and discussed its possibility of internationalization. As the results, we emphasized the following. 1) Strong structural reforms were forced before that stage. 2) With this, the former power of the textile industry, mainly state-owned enterprises, has been wiped out. 3) Modeling was acquired by OEM production in the 1980s. 4) However, the company could not learn styling. 5) As a result, counterfeit goods were mass-produced and sold at a low price. 6) Fashion School was established in Zhejiang Sci-Tech University , Formerly Silk Graduate School. 7) Successful people who were excellent in styling from graduates came out. After that, a huge market grew rapidly. Many businesses were culled. Alliances and M & A with foreign companies will not acquire styling ability. In order to sell Hangzhou Women’s Fashion in different country regions, it is necessary to enhance the function of styling.
