Abstract:A series of supported CaO catalysts with NaY, KL and NaZSM-5 zeolites as supports were prepared by microwave irradiation and used to catalyze the transesterification of methanol with soybean oil. The activities of synthesized catalysts were investigated compared to pure CaO. It was found that the activity of CaO catalyst increased after supported on zeolites, and the CaO/NaY exhibited the best performance. The improved catalytic activity was attributed to the increase of BET values and the concomitant increase of basic strength and basicity after dispersed on NaY zeolite through microwave irradiation. The prepared catalysts were characterized by several techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the Hammett indicator method. In addition, the factors affecting biodiesel yield were investigated to optimize the reaction conditions. A biodiesel yield of 95% was achieved (using the CaO/NaY catalyst) with 30wt.% of CaO loading on NaY zeolite, methanol/soybean oil molar ratio 9, reaction temperature 65°C, reaction time 3.0h and catalyst/oil mass ratio 3%. The results indicated that the supported catalyst had the capacity of water resistance and acid resistance. A high yield (more than 80%) could be obtained when the acid value and the water content of oil were less than 4mg KOH/g and 1.5%, respectively.

Abstract:In this study, transesterification of soybean oil to biodiesel using CaO as a solid base catalyst was studied. The reaction mechanism was proposed and the separate effects of the molar ratio of methanol to oil, reaction temperature, mass ratio of catalyst to oil and water content were investigated. The experimental results showed that a 12:1 molar ratio of methanol to oil, addition of 8% CaO catalyst, 65°C reaction temperature and 2.03% water content in methanol gave the best results, and the biodiesel yield exceeded 95% at 3h. The catalyst lifetime was longer than that of calcined K2CO3/γ-Al2O3 and KF/γ-Al2O3 catalysts. CaO maintained sustained activity even after being repeatedly used for 20 cycles and the biodiesel yield at 1.5h was not affected much in the repeated experiments.

Abstract:In this work, calcium ethoxide is proposed as a catalyst for the transesterification of soybean oil to biodiesel with methanol and ethanol. First, calcium ethoxide was synthesized through a calcium reaction with ethanol. Then, its physical and chemical characteristics were determined using instrumental methods such as Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area measurements, scanning electron micrographs, and particle size distribution measurements. The effects of the mass ratio of catalyst to oil, the molar ratio of methanol to oil, and the reaction temperature were studied to optimize the reaction conditions. The experimental results showed that the optimum conditions are a 12:1 molar ratio of methanol to oil, the addition of 3% Ca(OCH2CH3)(2) catalyst, and a 65 degrees C reaction temperature. A 95.0% biodiesel yield was obtained within 1.5 h in these conditions, and the activation energy was 54 149 J/mol. It also indicated that the catalysis performance of calcium ethoxide is better than that of CaO. Besides, a 91.8% biodiesel yield was obtained when it catalyzed soybean oil to biodiesel with ethanol.

Abstract:An effective approach for synthesizing green and sustainable biodiesel fuel from low-value vegetable oils has been explored. Herein, a series of catalysts of zinc supported on zirconia (xZn/ZrO2) were successfully synthesized, characterized, and applied for the production of biodiesel from Litsea cubeba kernel oil (LCKO) through the transesterification process. The results showed that the monoclinic phase structure of the prepared catalysts transformed to the more stable tetragonal phase structure after supporting different Zn loadings (≥5%). Compared with the pure ZrO2, the highly dispersed Zn species on the surface of xZn/ZrO2 could be divided into Zn oxide and ZnOH+, which could promote the transesterification of LCKO. Thus, the 7%Zn/ZrO2 catalyst exhibited the best catalytic activity of the LCKO conversion 82.5%, which was attributed to the positive effects of both the ZrO2 support and Zn species. Furthermore, the various reaction parameters (such as reaction time, stirring rate, nCH3OH:nLCKO, catalyst amount, and reaction temperature) were investigated systematically and optimized carefully. And a possible mechanism of the transesterification process catalyzed by Zn/ZrO2 catalysts was also proposed. Finally, the physical properties of the as-synthesized biodiesel accorded with the current international biodiesel standards.

Abstract:Mesoporous 0.1M/ZrO2 (M = Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca) solid base catalysts were successfully synthesized by using a sol–gel method. The catalytic activities of the catalysts were tested via transesterification reactions of soybean oil with methanol. Both 0.1Mg/ZrO2 and 0.1Ca/ZrO2 catalysts showed no catalytic activity in this reaction, while Li, K modified ZrO2 catalysts achieved high yield of biodiesel production. Besides, under the optimum reaction conditions, a FAME yield of as high as 98.2% was achieved on 0.1Li/ZrO2 catalyst calcined at 650°C.

Abstract:In this study, physical and chemical characterizations of calcium methoxide were investigated to assess its performance as an excellent solid base catalyst using some instrumental methods, such as BET surface area measurement, scanning electron micrographs and particle size distribution. Then, it was used to catalyze transesterification of soybean oil to biodiesel with methanol. The effects of various factors such as mass ratio of catalyst to oil, reaction temperature and volume ratio of methanol to oil were studied to optimize the reaction conditions. The results showed that calcium methoxide has strong basicity and high catalytic activity as a heterogeneous solid base catalyst and it was obtained a 98% biodiesel yield within 2h in this reaction. Besides, the recycling experiment results showed it had a long catalyst lifetime and could maintain activity even after being reused for 20 cycles.

Abstract:With molecular sieve NaY as carrier,supported solid base CaO/NaY was prepared by microwave irradiation,and the transesterification of soybean oil and methanol to produce biodiesel was investigated with the catalyst.The results show that the yield of biodiesel can be about 95% under the conditions when molar ratio of methanol to soybean oil is 9 ∶1,catalyst mass fraction is 3%,reaction temperature is 65 ℃ and reaction time is 3 h.The CaO/NaY catalyst is more tolerant to free fatty acids and water,and the yield is 92.4% and 84.8% respectively when acid value(as KOH) is 4 mg/g and water mass fraction is 1.5%.Moreover,X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis shows that CaO is well dispersed in NaY after microwave irradiation,and CaO/NaY is a kind of solid super base with total basicity of 3.798 mmol/g(H-≥27).

Abstract:The work aimed to produce biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO) using a novel catalyst from acid-modified kaolin with ZrO 2 and CaO. The catalyst was created by acid-treatment of kaolin and then impregnating kaolin with ZrO 2 as an acid-active-component and CaO as a base-enhancer. Ultrasound was applied to disperse promoters on kaolin(T) and improve specific-surface-area and pore-volume. XRD, FESEM, FTIR, 3D-surface, EDX-dot mapping, TEM, BET-BJH, TPD-NH 3 , and TPD-CO 2 analyses were used for characterization. A one-pot experiment has been performed to generate biodiesel from WCO by esterification and transesterification under the reaction-conditions of 10 wt% catalyst-loading, 110 °C, 3 h, and m.r = 20. The selected-nanocatalyst, Zr-Ca/Kaolin(T)-U(300), was found to have a high-activity for producing biodiesel from WCO with total-conversion, FFA-conversion, and TG-conversion rates of 93.4%, 99.0%, and 73.4%, respectively. This outstanding performance is attributed to the high acid and base strength of the catalyst (total-acid-density = 0.453 mmol NH 3 /g and total-base-density = 0.324 mmol CO 2 /g), its well-dispersed enhancer, and its high specific-surface-area (22.49 m 2 /g) and pore-volume (0.09 cm 3 /g). The selected-nanocatalyst also demonstrated great stability against five-successive-cycles (activity-reduction = 2.1%) and NaCl as an impurity of WCO (activity-reduction = 1.6%). Overall, this work presents a promising-approach for producing biodiesel from WCO using a highly efficient and stable bi-functional nanocatalyst.

Biodiesel Production from Waste Cooking Oil via β-Zeolite-Supported Sulfated Metal Oxide Catalyst Systems

Abstract:Waste cooking oil (WCO) is a readily available and cheap feedstock for biodiesel production. However, WCO contains high levels of free fatty acids (FFAs), which negatively impact the biodiesel yield if homogeneous catalysts are used. Heterogeneous solid acid catalysts are preferred for low-cost feedstocks because the catalysts are highly insensitive to high levels of FFA in the feedstock. Therefore, in the present study, we synthesized and evaluated different solid catalysts, pure β-zeolite, ZnO-β-zeolite, and SO42-/ZnO-β-zeolite for the production of biodiesel using WCO as feedstock. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), pyridine-FTIR, N2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy, while the biodiesel product was analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance (1H and 13C NMR) and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. The results revealed that the SO42-/ZnO-β-zeolite catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance for simultaneous transesterification and esterification of WCO, with a higher percentage conversion than the ZnO-β-zeolite and pure β-zeolite catalyst, due to the large pore size and high acidity. The SO42-/ZnO-β-zeolite catalyst exhibits 6.5 nm pore size, a total pore volume of 0.17 cm3/g, and high surface area of 250.26 m2/g. Experimental parameters such as catalyst loading, methanol:oil molar ratio, temperature, and reaction time were varied in order to establish the optimal parameters. The highest WCO conversion of 96.9% was obtained using the SO42-/ZnO-β-zeolite catalyst under an optimum reaction condition of 3.0 wt % catalyst loading, 200 °C reaction temperature, and 15:1 molar ratio of methanol to oil in 8 h reaction time. The WCO-derived biodiesel properties conform to the ASTM6751 standard specification. Our investigation of its kinetics revealed that the reaction follows a pseudo first-order kinetic model, with an activation energy (Ea) of 38.58 kJ/mol. Moreover, the stability and reusability of the catalysts were evaluated, and it was found that the SO42-/ZnO-β-zeolite catalyst exhibited good stability, giving a biodiesel conversion of over 80% after three synthesis cycles.

Abstract:Biodiesel produced by the transesterification of vegetable oils is promising alternative fuel to diesel because of the limited resources of fossil fuel and environmental concerns. An environmentally benign process was developed for the production of biodiesel from jatropha curcas oil using a heterogeneous solid super base catalyst, calcium oxide. The results showed that the base strength of calcium oxide was more than 26.5 after dipping in an ammonium carbonate solution followed by calcination. A study for optimizing the reaction conditions for the transesterification of jatropha curcas oil was performed. Under the optimum conditions of catalyst calcination temperature of 900°C, reaction temperature of 70°C, reaction time of 2.5 h, catalyst dosage of 1.5%, and methanol/oil molar ratio of 9:1, the oil conversion was 93%. The purification of the as-synthesized biodiesel with decalcifying agents to eliminate the remaining calcium was investigated. Citric acid showed good performance for the decalcification. The properties of the refined biodiesel accorded with the domestic and foreign standards.

Abstract:A novel acid-base bifunctional Zn/Ca–Zr catalyst has been synthesized successfully for biodiesel production from palm oil and acidified oil. The influence of synthetic factors on the catalytic activity of resulting Zn/Ca–Zr were discussed. Furthermore, the FAMEs yield was optimized to achieve the maximum value using the Taguchi approach. Results showed that the catalyst synthesized using a metal stoichiometric ratio of 4 : 4: 4, hydrothermal conditions, and activation temperature of 850 °C exhibited the best activity. The highest FAMEs yield was found to be 94.9% under the conditions of 5 wt% catalyst dosage, methanol/palm oil molar ratio of 20, and temperature of 170 °C at 3 h. The contribution percentage indicated that the methanol/oil molar ratio had the most significant effect on the FAMEs yield. Moreover, the Zn/Ca–Zr catalyst can catalyze the simultaneous esterification and transesterification of acidified palm oil with a 95.1% FAMEs yield and 93.3% acid reduction rate. And a 78.2% FAMEs yield can be maintained after four repeated cycles. Molecular simulations indicated the active site of Zn was more easily attacked by FFAs for esterification, while the active site of Ca was retained to adsorb methanol for transesterification, which explained the catalyst's acid-base bifunctional characteristics.

Abstract:In this study a novel, high surface area, and recyclable nano-size solid basic catalyst is developed for the first time from ZIF-8 MOF-derived CaO/ZnO for the high-yielding transesterification of soybean oil (SO) to biodiesel with methanol under microwave irradiation. The chemical composition, texture and morphology of the catalyst were comprehensively characterized by FT-IR, SEM-EDS, XRD, TGA, XPS and BET. In addition, 1 H NMR analyses were performed to confirm the conversion of soybean oil to biodiesel, whereas, GC–MS spectrum provide information about the chemical composition of the produced biodiesel. Kinetic studies are performed for the optimized catalyst and it follows the pseudo-first-order reaction. Thermodynamic analyses show that the transesterification of soybean oil to biodiesel reaction is endothermic and not spontaneous. By using Response surface methodology (RSM), the optimization of parameters that affect the biodiesel yield is studied. The transformation of 1:20 soybean oil with methanol using CaO/ZnO catalyst (7 wt%) gives 97.4 % biodiesel yield for the transesterification at 90 °C for 50 min. The catalyst shows good reusability after 5 successive cycles demonstrating its industrial-scale applications. According to Life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) the estimated price of 1 kg of biodiesel produced in this work is merely $1.11 showing high commercial applicability.

Abstract:A research was through conducted on that biodiesel was synthesized by the transesterification of maize oil and methanol catalyzed by solid catalyst iodine.All the technology affect factors of synthesis condition were made a systematic study,every factor was explored including reaction time、reaction temperature、the dosage of catalyst and the molar ration of methanol to oil.The optimum condition of synthesizing biodiesel was obtained,the reaction time is 90min,the reaction temperature is 70℃,the dosage of catalyst is 0.5%,and the molar ration of methanol to oil is 6:1,under the optimum condition,the yield is 75.27%.

Abstract:A novel solid superbase catalyst of Eu2O3/Al2O3 was prepared and its basic strength reached 26.5 measured by indicators according to Hammett scale. The catalytic activity of Eu2O3/Al2O3 was evaluated for the transesterification of soybean oil with methanol to biodiesel in the fixed bed reactor and under atmospheric pressure. The results show that Eu2O3/Al2O3 is an excellent catalyst for the transesterification of soybean oil, and the conversion of soybean oil can reach 63.2% at 70°C for 8h.

Abstract:Various CuO–ZnO–ZrO2 (CZZ) catalysts have been synthesized by urea–nitrate combustion method and their performances for methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation have been investigated. The effects of urea/nitrate ratio on physicochemical and catalytic properties were studied by XRD, BET, H2-TPR and reactive N2O adsorption techniques. The results show that when 50% of stoichiometric amount of urea was used, the CZZ catalyst exhibited an optimum catalytic behavior. The combustion method was found to be a simple, fast and valuable route for the preparation of CZZ catalyst for methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:ZrO2 supported La2O3 catalyst prepared by impregnation method was examined in the transesterification reaction of sunflower oil with methanol to produce biodiesel. It was found that the catalyst with 21wt% loaded La2O3 and calcined at 600°C showed the optimum activity. The basic property of the catalyst was studied by CO2-TPD, and the results showed that the fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) yield was related to their basicity. The catalyst was also characterized by TG–DTA, XRD, FTIR, SEM and TEM, and the mechanism for the formation of basic sites was discussed. It was also found that the crystallite size of support ZrO2 decreased by loading of La2O3, and the model of the solid-state reaction on the surface of La2O3/ZrO2 catalyst was proposed. Besides, the influence of various reaction variables on the conversion was investigated.

Abstract:A carbon-based solid acid catalyst was prepared by the sulfonation of carbonized vegetable oil asphalt and used to catalyze the transesterification of methanol with cottonseed oil. This catalyst was characterized by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy, BET surface area and pore size measurement, thermogravimetry analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The sulfonated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (s-MWCNTs) was also prepared and used to catalyze the same transesterification as the asphalt catalyst. The asphalt-based catalyst shows higher activity than the s-MWCNTs for the production of biodiesel, which may be correlated to its high acid site density, its loose irregular network and large pores can provide more acid sites for the reactants. The conversion of cottonseed oil 89.93% was obtained (using the asphalt-based catalyst) when the methanol/cottonseed oil molar ratio was 18.2, reaction temperature at 260 degrees C, reaction time 3.0 h and catalyst/cottonseed oil mass ratio of 0.2%.
