Abstract:Dichroic circular polarizers (DCP) represent an important group of optical filters that transfer only that part of the incident light with the desired polarization state and absorb the remainder. However, DCPs are usually bulky and exhibit significant optical loss. Moreover, the integration of these kinds of DCP devices can be difficult and costly as different compositions of chemicals are needed to achieve the desired polarization status. Circular polarizers based on metasurfaces require only thin films in the order of hundreds of nanometers but are limited by their sensitivity to angle of incidence. Furthermore, few existing solutions offer broadband operation in the visible range. By using computational simulations, this paper proposes and analyses a plasmonic DCP structure operating in the visible, from 400 nm to 700 nm which overcomes these drawbacks. The resulting circular dichroism transmission (CDT) is more than 0.9, and the maximum transmission efficiency is greater than 78% at visible wavelengths. These CDT characteristics are largely independent of angle of incidence up to angles of 80 degrees.

Abstract:A filling-factor-graded wavelike two-dimensional photonic crystal (2DPC) possessing a light-path bending effect that is polarization dependent is theoretically studied by using a qualitative analysis of the isofrequency curves. The numerical simulation results obtained by using the finite-difference time-domain method demonstrate that such a graded 2DPC has potential applications in a polarization splitter and a parallel-plane resonant cavity. A new kind of waveguide structure that combines a filling-factor-graded wavelike 2DPC and one-dimensional multilayer thin films is also discussed.

Abstract:Polarization grating (PG) divides the incident wave into the left- and right-handed circularly polarized waves, the intensities of two waves depending on the state of polarization of incident wave. Large deflection angle of the commercial PG is usually made by the grating cascade due to the limit of grating period. While using the tensor polarization holography theory, arbitrary deflection angles of PGs have been designed, where the polarization-sensitive material phenanthraquinone-doped polymethyl methacrylate (PQ/PMMA) is utilized as the recording medium in our experiments. We have made PG with the deflection angle of 40°.

Abstract:We report a polarization sensitive volume grating in this paper. In addition, a double‐layer waveguide using this kind of grating as coupling elements has been demonstrated to realize a full‐color near‐eye display. The results show that about 85% diffraction efficiency covering all of the red, green and blue spectra with a diagonal FOV of around 35° is obtained for the proposed waveguide prototype.

Abstract:Theoretical study of the optical diffraction properties of holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC)-based thick volume grating was presented. It is found that the HPDLC grating can selectively diffract the s-polarized light only, p-polarized light only, or both s and p beams by selecting suitable grating parameters. When an electric field is applied, the s- and p-polarized lights exhibit different diffraction behaviors and, thus, the tunable dual-state or three-state polarization switching could be realized.

Abstract:As a new type of waveguide coupling element, the liquid crystal polarization volume grating has attracted much attention because of its wide angular response bandwidth and unique polarization characteristics. However, the current research on liquid crystal polarization volume gratings is still in the initial stage, and the waveguide display system based on liquid crystal polarization volume gratings has the disadvantage of small pupil range. A liquid crystal polarization volume grating with a central wavelength of 532 nm and a reflection diffraction angle of 50 degrees at vertical incidence is fabricated. The peak diffraction efficiency of the grating reaches 75%. Using it as the coupling element of the waveguide display system, the image transmission and display can be realized. At the same time, the expansion of the exit pupil in one-dimensional and two-dimensional directions is designed and realized, and the exit pupil is expanded to the range of 14 mm X 12 mm.

Abstract:Polarization holography has been extensively applied in many fields, such as optical science, metrology, and biochemistry, due to its property of polarization modulation. However, the modulated polarization state of diffracted light corresponds strictly to that of incident light one by one. Here, a kind of tunable polarization holographic grating has been designed in terms of Jones matrices, and intensity-based polarization manipulation has been realized experimentally. The proposed tunable polarization holographic grating is recorded on an azobenzene liquid-crystalline film by a pair of coherent light beams with orthogonal polarization states and asymmetrically controlled intensities. It is found that the diffracted light can be actively manipulated from linearly to circularly polarized based on the light intensity of the recording holographic field when the polarization state of incident light keeps constant. Our work could enrich the field of light manipulation and holography.

Abstract:We demonstrate a polarization-dependent binocular waveguide display for augmented reality. Two polarization volume lenses (PVLs) are used to collimate and couple the light emitted from a single display panel into the waveguide, and two polarization volume gratings (PVGs) are used to couple the light out to the human eyes. With the proposed design, different high-quality images can be independently produced in the two eyes.

Abstract:Waveguide focusing grating couplers are being developed for application to optical data storage and for other applications where the advantages of light weight, monolithic construction, and ease of use with integrated optics are important. The polarization theory of these devices differs from the theory of conventional gratings because of the conversion of guided waves to radiated waves. We describe a simple theory based on induced dipoles that agrees well with experiment and that gives the designer insight into the process. The use of TM guided waves presents special difficulties. We discuss the design of waveguide focusing grating read-write heads for optical data storage applications, and show that it is possible, in principle, to achieve ideally mode-matched input and output, including intensity, phase, and polarization mode forms. Results of calculations of end-to-end performance will be presented. The experimental justification for the induced dipole theory will be described in a companion paper by Li et al.

Abstract:The manipulation of polarization states beyond the optical limit presents advantages in various applications.Considerable progress has been made in the design of meta-waveplates for on-demand polarization transformation,realized by numerical simulations and parameter sweep methodologies. However, due to the limited freedom in these classical strategies, particular challenges arise from the emerging requirement for multiplex optical devices and multidimensional manipulation of light, which urge for a large number of different nanostructures with great polarization control capability. Here, we demonstrate a set of self-designed arbitrary wave plates with a high polarization conversion efficiency. We combine Bayesian optimization and deep neural networks to design perfect halfand quarter-waveplates based on metallic nanostructures, which experimentally demonstrate excellent polarization control functionalities with the conversion ratios of 85% and 90%. More broadly, we develop a comprehensive wave plate database consisting of various metallic nanostructures with high polarization conversion efficiency, accompanying a flexible tuning of phase shifts（0–2π） and group delays（0–10 fs）, and construct an achromatic metalens based on this database. Owing to the versatility and excellent performance, our self-designed wave plates can promote the performance of multiplexed broadband metasurfaces and find potential applications in compact optical devices and polarization division multiplexing optical communications.

Abstract:Diffraction gratings are crucial optical elements in various optical systems, which can realize tailored diffraction energy distributions as well as phase modulations based on Fourier series. Meanwhile, the polarization gratings can produce arbitrarily specified polarization states on a set of desired diffraction orders for realizing polarimeter. However, simultaneously and independently tailoring the encoded phase profiles and polarization states in different diffraction orders has not been investigated previously. Here, a dielectric metasurface with the capability of generating different holographic images (generalized phase profiles) in different diffraction orders with controllable polarization states is proposed. Such functionality is achieved by applying the double‐phase method into the metasurface design process for manipulating the complex amplitude distributions of two orthogonal polarization bases. Furthermore, in order to prove that the proposed design strategy is suitable to achieve complicated wavefront modulation in a straightforward and convenient manner, a vectorial holographic image with spatially continuous polarization distribution is also obtained without any iteration process. The proposed method may pave the way to achieve a variety of applications such as beam shaping, polarization imaging as well as multifunctional optical systems. A dielectric metasurface with the capability of generating different holographic images in different diffraction orders with controllable polarization states is successfully demonstrated. Abstract:We propose a quarter-wave plate based on nanoslits and analyze it using a semianalytical theory and simulations. The device comprises two nanoslits arranged perpendicular to one another where the phases of the fields transmitted by the nanoslits differ by λ/4. In this way, the polarization state of the incident light can be changed from linear to circular or vice versa. The plasmonic nanoslit wave plate is thin and has a subwavelength lateral extent. We show that the predictions for the phase shift obtained from a semianalytical model are in very good agreement with simulations by the finite difference time domain method.

Abstract:A method of patterning surfaces for liquid-crystal alignment using a polarization holography exposure on a linear photopolymerizable polymer alignment layer is demonstrated. Three configurations are demonstrated which include registered planar-periodic surface boundary conditions on both surfaces (true polarization gratings), planar-periodic and uniform planary surface boundary conditions, and planar-periodic and homeotropic boundary conditions. Two-dimensional polarization gratings are also demonstrated by orientating planar-periodic alignment layers orthogonally. Passive polarization gratings are also demonstrated using reactive mesogens to capture the periodic order indefinitely. The underlying structure of the configuration is discussed, including the nature of their switching transition (threshold or thresholdless), for all three configurations. A simple phenomenological model is presented to describe the Freedericksz transition for the registered planar-periodic boundary condition case.

Abstract:Sub-wavelength gratings could function as polarization components, such as wave-plates and polarized beam splitters. Furthermore, gratings in resonate regime could act as achromatic wave-plate. Here, an achromatic quarter-wave plate of a submicrometer grating with sinusoidal profile is designed based on diffractive optics. Rigorous coupled wave theory (RCWT) was used to analyze the subwavelength grating made on photo-resist in ambient air. Design of a broadband form-birefringent phase retarder for 400nm to 800nm visible region is discussed. A sinusoidal sub-wavelength grating with good properties was designed. Its phase retard maintains at about 90degrees and maximum deviation is about 15%, which approaches normal binary waveplate.

Abstract:Multi-photon product (F540-state) of bacteriorhodopsin (BR) polymeric films excited by femtosecond laser shows permanently photoinduced birefringence and dichroism. Based on this property, polarization-sensitive diffractive optical elements (PDOEs), e.g., gratings, two-dimensional optical lattice, Bessel zone plate, were firstly fabricated and investigated in BR films by femtosecond laser multi-beam interference with rotationally symmetric pyramid lenses. These fabricated PDOEs are completely stable at room temperature. The dependence of diffraction efficiency on the incident polarization state was measured. The micro-structures of PDOEs were observed under polarization microscope, and the selective readout diffraction patterns from the polarization-multiplexed PDOEs were demonstrated.

Abstract:Based on polarization holography, circular polarization beam splitters with separation angles of up to 100° have been fabricated. The left- and right-handed circularly polarized waves can be reconstructed by the two holograms that were designed by the tensor theory of polarization holography, respectively. In the fabrication of circular polarization beam splitters, two holograms were recorded only by the interference method in the same area of the polarization-sensitive material. This method is simple, inexpensive, and easy to adjust the separation angles and element size. The diffraction efficiency and the polarization state of the reconstructed waves were tested under different incident waves, and the experimental results are in good agreement with the theory. This work not only deepens our understanding of polarization holography but also expands the applications of polarization holography.

Abstract:In this work, we study the polarization properties of diffraction gratings recorded in thin films of the azopolymer PAZO (poly[1-[4-(3-carboxy-4-hydroxyphenylazo)benzene sulfonamido]-1,2-ethanediyl, sodium salt]) using digital polarization holography. Using two quarter-wave plates, the phase retardation of each pixel of the SLM is converted into the azimuth rotation of linearly polarized light. When recording from the azopolymer side of the sample, significant surface relief amplitude is observed with atomic force microscopy. In contrast, recording from the substrate side of the sample allows the reduction of the surface relief modulation and the obtaining of polarization gratings with characteristics close to an ideal grating, recorded with two orthogonal circular polarizations. This can be achieved even with a four-pixel period of grating, as demonstrated by our results.
