Survey and Analysis of Mental Health in Civil Pilots

Abstract:Objectives This article mainly used the symptom checklist 90(scl- 90) to analyze the mental health of active civil pilots. The result would provid e some information for further related studies. Method We used the symptom check list 90(scl-90) and self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) to measure mental health o f civil pilots in major airlines of China and some non-special trade ground peo ple. Results The mental health of our civil pilots on active service was a littl e worse than the ground support team, but as a whole the differences were very s mall. Pilots tended to have more problems in thespect of sleep and diet. A furth er analysis of the pilots mental health status showed that ages over 30 were b etter than those of below 30. Captains were better than first officers, with a s ignificant difference of hostility and paranoid. Pilots with 1000~3000 flying h ours were much worse than those whose flying hours above 3000 or below 1000 hour s, with a significant difference of obsessive-compulsive additional items SCL- 90 score. Conclusion Airlines medical department urgently need to concern the pi lots mental health at different period and to provide mental health counseling to strength their mental health condition.
