Abstract:Artificial electromagnetic materials can be utilized to manipulate light propagations, and have potential applications in designs of photonic and quantum optical devices. Multilevel quantum coherent media is one kind of such artificial electromagnetic materials. Some physically interesting effects due to the combination of quantum coherence and quantum vacuum, i.e., the tunable quantum coherent effects, in which the quantum-vacuum fluctuation field is involved, are suggested. Two topics are addressed: i) the spontaneous emission inhibition due to quantum interference in a three-level system; ii) the quantum light-induced potentials for coherent manipulation of atomic matter waves. The light-induced quantum guiding potentials could be utilized to cool and trap atoms, and may be used for the development of new techniques of atom fibers and atom chips, where the coherent manipulation of atomic matter waves is needed. In addition, the physical foundation of quantum coherence is analyzed and its counterparts in other fields are suggested. It is well known that the mechanism of atomic CPT (coherent population trapping) and EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency) is the quantum destructive interference. However, there are some interesting analogues in field theory such as quark mixing mechanism that also exhibits such a phase coherence. We compare the quantum interferences of the atomic CPT with the quark mixing (and GIM mechanism) in the weak interaction. It is shown that the quantum destructive interference presented here is one of the common characteristics of many quantum coherent processes. The scheme presented here may have a potential significance in both pure and applied physics, e.g., providing us with a new insight into the physical essence of quantum coherence in various physical processes, and applying the quantum-vacuum effects to the development of new photonic devices.
Double Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Tripod-type Atom System

Abstract:The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon in a four level atomic system with tripod configuration is studied. The results show that this configuration is equivalent to the combination of two single three-level $\Lambda$ configurations, which, under certain conditions, results in the so-called double-EIT (DEIT) phenomenon. The properties of the double transparency windows for DEIT are discussed in detail and the possible experimental scheme is proposed.

Abstract:Superconducting quantum computing is currently considered as one of the most promising options to realize a quantum computer. Superconducting qubit is the core component of the superconducting quantum computer. To increase the decoherence time of superconducting qubits as far as possible, the large-scale integration of superconducting qubits have become the main research topic of superconducting quantum computing. As a macroscopic artificial atom, lots of quantum optical phenomena can be observed in the superconducting qubits. Electromagnetically induced transparency based on superconducting qubits can provide a new method to study the superconducting qubit decoherence mechanism, and can also arouse new ideas to study the nonlinear optics, optical storage, ultra-slow optical transmission and quantum optics. In this paper, we introduce a theoretical basis of electromagnetically induced transparency, review the current research of electromagnetically induced transparency based on superconducting qubits, compare the difference between electromagnetically induced transparencies based on gas atoms and superconducting qubits, and evaluat the prospect applications for its development.

Abstract:To make certain quantitative interpretations of spectra from NMR experiments carried out on heterogeneous samples, such as cells and tissues, we must be able to estimate the magnetic and electric fields experienced by the resonant nuclei of atoms in the sample. Here, we analyze the relationships between these fields and the fields obtained by solving the Maxwell equations that describe the bulk properties of the materials present. This analysis separates the contribution to these fields of the molecule in which the atom in question is bonded, the "host" fields, from the contribution of all the other molecules in the system, the "external" fields. We discuss the circumstances under which the latter can be found by determining the macroscopic fields in the sample and then removing the averaged contribution of the host molecule. We demonstrate that the results produced by the, so-called, "sphere of Lorentz" construction are of general validity in both static and time-varying cases. This analytic construct, however, is not "mystical" and its justification rests not on any sphericity in the system but on the local uniformity and isotropy, i.e., spherical symmetry, of the medium when averaged over random microscopic configurations. This local averaging is precisely that which defines the equations that describe the macroscopic fields. Hence, the external microscopic fields, in a suitably averaged sense, can be estimated from the macroscopic fields. We then discuss the calculation of the external fields and that of the resonant nucleus in NMR experiments.

Abstract:We study the microwave absorption of a driven three-level quantum system, which is realized by a superconducting flux quantum circuit (SFQC), with a magnetic driving field applied to the two upper levels. The interaction between the three-level system and its environment is studied within the Born-Markov approximation, and we take into account the effects of the driving field on the damping rates of the three-level system. We study the linear response of the driven three-level SFQC to a weak probe field. The linear magnetic susceptibility of the SFQC can be changed by both the driving field and the bias magnetic flux. When the bias magnetic flux is at the optimal point, the transition from the ground state to the second-excited state is forbidden and the three-level SFQC has a ladder-type transition. Thus, the SFQC responds to the probe field like natural atoms with ladder-type transitions. However, when the bias magnetic flux deviates from the optimal point, the three-level SFQC has a cyclic transition, thus it responds to the probe field like a combination of natural atoms with ladder-type transitions and natural atoms with Lambda-type transitions. In particular, we provide detailed discussions on the conditions for realizing electromagnetically induced transparency and Autler-Townes splitting in three-level SFQCs.

Abstract:We investigate electromagnetically induced transparency and slow group velocity of light in ultracold Bose gas with a two-photon Raman process. The properties of electromagnetically induced transparency and light speed can be changed by controlling the atomic interaction. Atomic interaction can be used as a knob to control the optical properties of atomic media. This can be realized in experiment by using the Feshbach resonance technique.

Abstract:The wealth of quantum coherence effects depending on the orientation of external magnetic field, the polarization of coupling and probe lights, and the Rabi frequency of the coupling beam are studied in transition F-e=2 <-> F-g=3 of Cs D-2 line. The split of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances on two or three resonances determined by the different combination of the polarization of interaction lights and the direction of applied magnetic fields is obtained. The shifting and widening of the EIT resonances with the strength of the magnetic field (i.e., Zeeman splitting in the upper and lower levels) and Rabi frequency of the coupling beam increasing are also discussed. It may develop into the potential application for tunable multichannel optical information storage. On the other hand, an explanation of observed asymmetry of spectra by laser frequency offset from the optical resonance is given with theoretical calculation, which is in good agreement with the experimental results.
Detuned Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in an $N$-type Atom

Abstract:The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an $N$ configuration is studied under both resonant and off-resonant conditions. In a certain off-resonant condition the dark state of the four level system, which is almost the same as the resonant dark state in $\Lambda$ configuration, is rebuilt. The actual system with damping is examined using optical Bloch equation, both numerically and analytically. Based on this detuned dark state, some new applications with frequency shifts can be realized.

Abstract:When two pairs of near-resonant laser fields interact with a five-level atom, forming an M geometry, coherent population trapping and electromagnetically induced transparency appear in the condition of the collaboration of two two-photon resonances. Abstract:Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been realized in atomic systems, but fulfilling the EIT conditions for artificial atoms made from superconducting circuits is a more difficult task. Here we report an experimental observation of the EIT in a tunable three-dimensional transmon by probing the cavity transmission. To fulfill the EIT conditions, we tune the transmon to adjust its damping rates by utilizing the effect of the cavity on the transmon states. From the experimental observations, we clearly identify the EIT and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS) regimes as well as the transition regime in between. Also, the experimental data demonstrate that the threshold Omega(AIC) determined by the Akaike information criterion can describe the EIT-ATS transition better than the threshold Omega(EIT) given by the EIT theory.

Abstract:We develop a fully quantum treatment of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a vapor of three-level $\Lambda$-type atoms. Both the probe and coupling lasers with arbitrary intensities are quantized, and treated on the same footing. In addition to reproducing known results on ultraslow pulse propagation at the lowest order in the ratio of their Rabi frequencies, our treatment uncovers that the atomic medium with EIT exhibits giant Kerr as well as higher order non-linearities. Enhancement of many orders of magnitude is predicted for higher-order refractive-index coefficients.

Abstract:Due to quantum interference, light can transmit through dense atomic media, a phenomenon known as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We propose that EIT is not limited to light transmission and there is an electronic analog where resonant transparency in charge transport in an opaque structure can be induced by electromagnetic radiation. A triple-quantum-dots system with Λ-type level structure is generally opaque due to the level in the center dot being significantly higher and therefore hopping from the left dot to the center dot is almost forbidden. We demonstrate that an electromagnetically induced electron transparency (EIET) in charge of transport can indeed occur in the Λ-type system. The direct evidence of EIET is that an electron can travel from the left dot to the right dot, while the center dot apparently becomes invisible. We analyze EIET and the related shot noise in both the zero and strong Coulomb blockade regimes. It is found that the EIET (position, height, and symmetry) can be tuned by several controllable parameters of the radiation fields, such as the Rabi frequencies and detuning frequencies. The result offers a transparency/opaque tuning technique in charge transport using interfering radiation fields.
Strong electromagnetically induced transparency in atomic media with large residual Doppler broadening

Abstract:Electromagnetically induced transparency and coherent population trapping were observed in a hot (1000 K) calcium vapor embedded into an electrical gas discharge. Unexpectedly large transparencies (of up to 70%) were observed under very unfavorable conditions: probe wavelength shorter than the coupling wavelength, and coupling Rabi frequency significantly smaller than the residual Doppler linewidth of the two photon transition. We developed a theoretical model that shows that the observed results are due to the combined effects of a strong probe beam and a small open character of the atomic system. Coherent population trapping also manifests itself as a change in the impedance of the gas discharge, and the phenomenon can be probed with high sensitivity via the optogalvanic effect.

Abstract:We consider N identical two-level atoms coupled to an optical cavity, which is coherently driven by an external field. In the limit of small atomic excitation, the reflection and transmission coefficients for both fields and intensities are calculated analytically. In addition, the frequency content of the cavity field and hence also the emission spectrum of the cavity is determined. It is discussed in particular how individual collisional dephasing and common atomic energy-level fluctuations prevent the cavity field from being in a coherent state, which in turn affects the outgoing fields.

Abstract:Quantum interference effects in the unmodulated quantum systems with light-matter interaction have been widely studied, such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS). However, the similar quantum interference effects in the Floquet systems (i.e., periodically modulated systems), which might cover rich new physics, were rarely studied. In this article, we investigate the quantum interference effects in the Floquet two- and three-level systems analytically and numerically. We show a coherent destruction tunneling effect in a lotuslike multipeak spectrum with a Floquet two-level system, where the intensity of the probe field is periodically modulated with a square-wave sequence. We demonstrate that the multipeak split into multiple transparency windows with tunable quantum interference if the Floquet system is asynchronously controlled via a third level. Based on phenomenological analysis with Akaike information criterion, we show that the symmetric central transparency window has a similar mechanism to the traditional ATS or EIT depending on the choice of parameters, additional with an extra degree of freedom to control the quantum interference provided by the modulation period. The other transparent windows are shown to be asymmetric, different from the traditional ATS and EIT windows. These nontrivial quantum interference effects open up a scope to explore the applications of the Floquet systems.

Abstract:Quantum networks will enable extraordinary capabilities for communicating and processing quantum information. These networks require a reliable means of storage, retrieval, and manipulation of quantum states at the network nodes. A node receives one or more coherent inputs and sends a conditional output to the next cascaded node in the network through a quantum channel. Here, we demonstrate this basic functionality by using the quantum interference mechanism of electromagnetically induced transparency in a transmon qubit coupled to a superconducting resonator. First, we apply a microwave bias, i.e., drive, to the qubit-cavity system to prepare a.-type three-level system of polariton states. Second, we input two interchangeable microwave signals, i.e., a probe tone and a control tone, and observe that transmission of the probe tone is conditional upon the presence of the control tone that switches the state of the device with up to 99.73% transmission extinction. Importantly, our electromagnetically induced transparency scheme uses all dipole allowed transitions. We infer high dark state preparation fidelities of > 99.39% and negative group velocities of up to -0.52 +/- 0.09 km/s based on our data.

Abstract:The nonlocal waveguide coupling of giant atoms can bring up novel physics and applications. In this paper, we find unconventional electromagnetically induced transparency in giant atoms that has not been reported so far. We present a consistent theory for describing the unconventional EIT which includes a real-space scattering method and a time-delayed master equation. Our analysis shows this phenomenon is a full quantum effect led by a quantized interaction between the atom and the waveguide. Our theory shows that it can be observed when the time delay between two neighboring coupling points is comparable to the relaxation time of the atom. This phenomenon results from the inherent nonlocality of the giant atom, which physically forces propagating fields to be standing waves in space and the atom exhibiting retardations in time.

Abstract:We present an experimental study on the cavity-atom ensemble system, and realize the doubly-resonant cavity enhanced electromagnetically induced transparency, where both the probe and control lasers are resonant with a Fabry-Perot cavity. We demonstrate the precise frequency manipulating of the hybrid optical-atomic resonances, through either temperature or cavity length tuning. In such a system, the control power can be greatly enhanced due to the cavity, and all-optical switching is achieved with a much lower control laser power compared to previous studies. A new theoretical model is developed to describe the effective three-wave mixing process between spin-wave and optical modes. Interesting non-Hermitian physics are predicted theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. Such a doubly-resonant cavity-atom ensemble system without a specially designed cavity can be used for future applications, such as optical signal storage and microwave-to-optical frequency conversion.
