Abstract:The low latitude magnetometer array in China (CHIMAG) is a ground-based multi-station project for the magnetic field variation measurement in the low latitude (L<2). IWF/OEAW in Graz, Austria in cooperation with UCLA in Los Angeles, USA and CSSAR in Beijing, China has developed variometers for magnetic field observations. The variometer is a fluxgate magnetometer especially for Earth field variation and pulsation measurements. CHIMAG magnetometer has been successfully installed in three sites (Beijing, Wuhan, Hainan). Two more will be installed in 2000. CHIMAG will operate continuously during the CLUSTER II project and will provide a high sensitivity and accurate timing data base to support CLUSTER II observations. It will advance our understanding of some dynamic processes in geomagnetosphere, such as the excitation of the giant daytime Pi2-like pulsations. We present here some initial results from the first three station.
