Abstract:Impregnation method was used to prepare of graphene/TiO2 composite. Its microstructure, phase and diffuse reflection properties were characterized by using of SEM, XRD and DRS. And the photocatalytic properties of gaphene/TiO2 composite changed with the reaction time, composite quantity added, X3B initial concentration and pH were investigated. The results show that the degradation degree of graphene/TiO2 composite on X3B increases with reaction time increasing. Graphene/TiO2 composite of GR3 has the best photocatalytic performance when the introduction of graphene was 0.4mg/g((TiO2))). Degradation efficiency of GR3 on X3B increases with the quantity of GR3 added to the solution increasing. And the photocatalytic efficiency is the highest when GR3 is 0.15g. With increasing of X3B initial concentration, the solution degradation rate is decreased. And it is beneficial for graphene/TiO2 composite to play its photocatalytic properties in the weak alkaline conditions.
Hybrid Reduced Graphene Oxide/tio2/graphitic Carbon Nitride Composites with Improved Photocatalytic Activity for Organic Pollutant Degradation

Abstract:The triple-component composites (rGO/TiO2/CN) were fabricated from the mixtures of the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets, anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) via simple mechanical stirring followed by calcination process. The rGO/TiO2/CN-0.75 sample with the optimal weight ratio exhibits improved photocatalytic activity, evidenced by methylene blue degradation, which is attributed to the synergistic effect of the incorporation of rGO and g-C3N4 with TiO2. The porous-layered structure of rGO and g-C3N4 encourages excellent dispersion of TiO2 NPs and consequently increases absorption sites and photocatalytic reaction sites. Meanwhile, the g-C3N4 expands visible-light absorption range and enhances the light harvest. Furthermore, rGO accelerates the photogenerated carrier separation and effectively suppresses charge recombination in the composites due to the excellent conductivity. The results provide a facile and promising strategy for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of TiO2-based composite photocatalysts.

Abstract:Graphene/TiO2 (GR/TiO2) composite powders were prepared by co-precipitation method, and their morphology, structure and photocatalytic property were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet spectrophotometer, respectively. The experimental results show that the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 is significantly improved by GR. When the content of GR in the composite powder is 7.88%, the GR/TiO2 composite powders treated at 500 degrees C display the good photocatalytic performance in which the degradation volume of methyl orange (MO) approaches 100% within 120min. The improvement for photocatalytic properties of TiO2 is attributed to the special structure and excellent electrical properties of GR.

Abstract:Sulfur-doped graphene quantum dots (S-GQDs) decorated with high-quantum-yield titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocomposite are synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. Photoluminescence characterization shows that S-GQDs exhibit stronger absorption peaks at ultraviolet (UV) region than GQDs. Photocatalytic activity of the obtained S-GQD/TiO2 nanocomposite reaches 70% in 8 min; this activity is significantly enhanced compared with those of GQDs/TiO2 and pure TiO2. Improved UV light absorption and effective transfer of photogenerated electrons can be attributed to integration of S-GQDs with TiO2 in a cladding manner. The present work provides a new approach for development of attractive GQD-based nanocomposites with controllable structures and photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:The nanocomposites of TiO(2)-graphene (TiO(2)-GR) have been prepared via a facile hydrothermal reaction of graphene oxide and TiO(2) in an ethanol-water solvent. We show that such a TiO(2)-GR nanocomposite exhibits much higher photocatalytic activity and stability than bare TiO(2) toward the gas-phase degradation of benzene, a volatile aromatic pollutant in air. By investigating the effect of different addition ratios of graphene on the photocatalytic activity of TiO(2)-GR systematically, we find that the higher weight ratio in TiO(2)-GR will decrease the photocatalytic activity. Analogous phenomenon is also observed for the liquid-phase degradation of dyes over TiO(2)-GR. In addition, the key features for TiO(2)-GR including enhancement of adsorptivity of pollutants, light absorption intensity, electron-hole pairs lifetime, and extended light absorption range have also been found in the composite of TiO(2) and carbon nanotubes (TiO(2)-CNT). These strongly manifest that TiO(2)-GR is in essence the same as other TiO(2)-carbon (carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, and activated carbon) composite materials on enhancement of photocatalytic activity of TiO(2), although graphene by itself has unique structural and electronic properties. Notably, this key fundamental question remains completely unaddressed in a recent report ( ACS Nano 2010 , 4 , 380 ) regarding liquid-phase degradation of dyes over the TiO(2)-GR photocatalyst. Thus, we propose that TiO(2)-GR cannot provide truly new insights into the fabrication of TiO(2)-carbon composite as high-performance photocatalysts. It is hoped that our work could avert the misleading message to the readership, hence offering a valuable source of reference on fabricating TiO(2)-carbon composites for their application as a photocatalyst in the environment cleanup.

Abstract:Novel graphene-TiO2 (GR-TiO2) composite photocatalysts were synthesized by hydrothermal method. During the hydrothermal process, both the reduction of graphene oxide and loading of TiO2 nanoparticles on graphene were achieved. The structure, surface morphology, chemical composition and optical properties of composites were studied using XRD, TEM, XPS, DRS and PL spectroscopy. The absorption edge of TiO2 shifted to visible-light region with increasing amount of graphene in the composite samples. The photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) was carried out using graphene-TiO2 composite catalysts in order to study the photocatalytic efficiency. The results showed that GR-TiO2 composites can efficiently photodegrade MO, showing an enhanced photocatalytic activity over pure TiO2 under visible-light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the composite catalysts might be attributed to great adsorptivity of dyes, extended light absorption range and efficient charge separation due to giant pi-conjugation system and two-dimensional planar structure of graphene. Abstract:The photoelectronchemical (PEC) activity of the photocatalyst is largely dependent on the concentration and lifetime of the photogenerated carriers, however, these carriers are easily and quickly neutralized within the photocatalyst. To address this issue, we designed a superstructure of graphene-intercalated TiO 2 nanoparticles (TiO 2 /G) by pyrolyzing octylamine-intercalated hexafluorotitanic acid hybrids. The inserted graphene accelerates photoelectron transfer and reduces the recombination of photogenerated carriers in the body, while maintains the structural stability. The TiO 2 /G hybrid composite exhibits a low carbon content of only 1.3 wt.%, a strong Ti-C chemical interaction between TiO 2 and intercalated graphene, and a large surface area of 38.88 m 2 /g, nearly five times that of bare TiO 2 (7.96 m 2 /g). The findings from the photocatalytic experiments indicate that the photocatalytic efficiency and photocurrent response of TiO 2 /G are twice and 4.22 times higher, respectively, compared to standard TiO 2 nanoparticles. This indicates a substantial promise for the superstructure in photoelectrochemistry and energy conversion applications.

Abstract:In this study, in situ TiO2 was grown on the surface of graphene by a facile sol–gel method to form black TiO2/graphene composites with highly improved photocatalytic activity. The combination of graphene and TiO2 was beneficial to eliminate the recombination of photogenerated electron holes. The self-doping Ti3+ was introduced, accompanied by the crystallization of amorphous TiO2, during the hydrogenation process. Consequently, the narrowed bandgap caused by self-doping Ti3+ enhanced the visible light absorption and thus made the composites appear black. Both of them improved the photocatalytic performance of the synthesized black TiO2/graphene composites. The band structure of the composite was analyzed by valence band XPS, revealing the reason for the high visible light catalytic performance of the composite. The results proved that the black TiO2/graphene composites synthesized show attractive potential for applications in environmental and energy issues.

The Synergistic Effect of Pyridinic Nitrogen and Graphitic Nitrogen of Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots for Enhanced TiO2 Nanocomposites’ Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:In this study, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) and a TiO2 nanocomposite were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal route. Ammonia water was used as a nitrogen source to prepare the N-GQDs. When optically characterized by UV-vis, N-GQDs reveal stronger absorption peaks in the range of ultraviolet (UV) light than graphene quantum dots (GQDs). In comparison with GQDs/TiO2 and pure TiO2, the N-GQDs/TiO2 have significantly improved photocatalytic performance. In particular, it was found that, when the added amount of ammonia water was 50 mL, the content of pyridinic N and graphitic N were as high as 22.47% and 31.44%, respectively. Most important, the photocatalytic activity of N-GQDs/TiO2-50 was about 95% after 12 min. The results illustrated that pyridinic N and graphitic N play a significant role in photocatalytic performance.
Graphene Quantum Dots Modified Mesoporous Graphite Carbon Nitride with Significant Enhancement of Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Hydroxyl-graphene quantum dots (GQDs) modified mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) composites were fabricated through electrostatic interactions. A variety of techniques were applied to discuss systematic effect on the morphology, optical, electronic properties and structure of GQDs/mpg-C3N4 composites. Remarkably, the 0.5 wt% GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than that of the pure mpg-C3N4 by using rhodamine B (RhB) and colorless tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) as pollutants under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that uniform dispersion of GQDs on the surface of mpg-C3N4 and intimate contact between the two materials contributed to the enhanced activity. Radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance tests both certified that the GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites can generate more center dot O-2(-) species and a small fraction of holes for photocatalytic degradation. Abstract:We present a simple and feasible strategy to synthesize the novel anatase TiO2/graphene composites with exposed TiO2 {001} high-energy facets by the hydrofluoric acid and methanol joint assisted solvothermal reactions. During the synthesis process, graphene was uniformly covered with a large number of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (20-25 nm), exposing the {001} facets. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption measurements show the presence of electron transfer between TiO2 and graphene. Furthermore, transient photovoltage spectra of the composite also exhibits prolonged mean lifetime of electron-hole pairs compared with pure TiO2. The electron transfer between Ti and C will greatly retard the recombination of photoinduced charge carriers and prolong electron lifetime, which contribute to the enhancement of photocatalytic performance. During the photocatalysis measurement, the TiO2/graphene composites have high photocatalytic activity compared with the P25 under UV light, likely due to the effective separation of photoinduced charge and exposure of high reactive {001} facets.

Abstract:In this work, a novel photocatalyst with excellent photocatalytic activities was developed by the combination of TiO2 with graphene oxide (GO). GO was firstly prepared by the chemical oxidation of graphite through Hummers method and the subsequent dispersion and exfoliation in water. Then, GO and P25 nanoparticles (commercial TiO2) were used as raw materials to synthesize TiO2/graphene (TiO2/GE) nanocomposites by using a one-step solvothermal method. TEM images clearly showed that TiO2 nanomaterials (the size of about 15~20 nm) were distributed well onto the two-dimensional (2D) graphene sheets, indicating the formation of TiO2/GE nanocomposites. XRD results indicated that TiO2/GE nanocomposites exhibited TiO2 crystalline phase structure. Meanwhile, it was demonstrated from the methylene blue (MB) photodegradation results that TiO2/GE nanocomposites possessed excellent photocatalytic activities with potential applications.
Synergistic Effects of Fe and Graphene on Photocatalytic Activity Enhancement of TiO2 under Visible Light

Abstract:A novel visible light-responsive GR-Fe/TiO2 composite photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. Successful deposition of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles onto the graphene is confirmed by transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) shows that compared with the pure TiO2, the resulting GR-Fe/TiO2 composite photocatalysts exhibit enhanced visible light absorption with the increasing Fe dopant. Fluorescence emission spectra show that GR-Fe/TiO2 composites possess improved charge separation than both GR-TiO2 and pure TiO2. The photocatalysis experiment demonstrates that GR-Fe/TiO2 composites have a ten-fold photocatalytic activity enhancement over pure TiO2 for the degradation of methyl orange. The enhanced photocatalytic activity may be attributed to the synergistic effect of improved adsorptivity of dyes, enhanced visible light absorption and effective charge separation. Abstract:Nitrogen doped TiO2 nanoparticles decorated on graphene sheets are successfully synthesized by a low-temperature hydrothermal method. The resulting GR-N/TiO2 composites are characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The optical properties are studied using UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), which confirms that the spectral responses of the composite catalysts are extended to the visible-light region and show a significant reduction in band gap energy from 3.18 to 2.64 eV. Photoluminescence emission spectra verify that GR-N/TiO2 composites possess better charge separation capability than pure TiO2. The photocatalytic activity is tested by degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye under visible light irradiation. The results demonstrate that GR-N/TiO2 composites can effectively photodegrade MO, showing an impressive photocatalytic enhancement over pure TiO2. The dramatically enhanced activity of composite photocatalysts can be attributed to great adsorption of dyes, enhanced visible light absorption and efficient charge separation and transfer processes. Abstract:A series of titanium dioxide and graphene sheets (GSs) composites were synthesized with a sol-gel method using tetrabutyl titanate and graphite oxide (GO) as the starting materials. The obtained TiO2/GSs photocatalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption analysis, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultravioletvisible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared samples was evaluated by hydrogen evolution from water photo-splitting under UV-vis illumination. The influence of GSs content and calcinations atmosphere on the photocatalytic activity was also investigated. The results show that both GSs content and the calcinations atmosphere can affect the photocatalytic activity of the obtained composites.

Abstract:This study developed a facile approach for preparing Ti(3+) self-doped TiO2-graphene photocatalyst by a one-step vacuum activation technology involved a relative lower temperature, which could be activated by the visible light owing to the synergistic effect among Ti(3+) doping, some new intersurface bonds generation and graphene oxide reduction. Compared with the traditional methods, the vacuum activation involves a low temperature and low-costing, which can achieve the reduction of GO, the self doping of Ti(3+) in TiO2 and the loading of TiO2 nanoparticles on GR surface at the same time. These resulting TiO2-graphene composites show the high photodegradation rate of MO, high hydrogen evolution activity and excellent IPCE in the visible light irradiation. The facile vacuum activation method can provide an effective and practical approach to improve the performance of TiO2-graphene and other metal oxides-graphene towards their practical photocatalytic applications.

The as-prepared P25–GR nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence emission spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The results indicated that P25–GR nanocomposites possessed enhanced light absorption ability and charge separation efficiency. As photocatalysts, P25–GR hybrids were much better than the bare P25, when they were used in the hydrogen evolution from aqueous methanol solution under Xe-lamp illumination. A significant enhancement in the rate of hydrogen production was achieved through using P25–GR as photocatalysts, comparing to bare P25. The optimum mass ratio of GR to P25 in the hybrids was 0.5wt%. The higher mass ratio of GR in P25–GR would decrease the photocatalytic activity of P25.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an outstanding photocatalytic semiconductor, but wide band gap of TiO2 significantly restricts its photocatalytic performance. Graphene possesses promising mechanical, optical and electrical properties. Relying on the excellent gain effect of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) on conductivity, unique up-conversion photoluminescence property and remarkable dye adsorption, the photoelectric properties of TiO2 can be significantly improved. In this study, a novel structure of GQDs-decorated TiO2 nanofibers was successfully prepared by electrospinning and hydrothermal synthesis procedures. The synthesized GQDs/TiO2 nanofibers composite exhibited a one-dimensional structure. The results show that introduction of GQDs prohibits the adverse recombination between photoinduced charges and prolongs the existence time. The photocatalytic properties characterization results show that 10% mass fraction of GQDs in composite nanofibers has the best degradation activity with its ultrafast electron transport rate and low electron–hole pair recombination rate.
