Abstract:Spin is a fundamental property of all elementary particles. Classically it can be viewed as a tiny magnetic moment, but a measurement of an electron spin along the direction of an external magnetic field can have only two outcomes1: parallel or anti-parallel to the field. This discreteness reflects the quantum mechanical nature of spin. Ensembles of many spins have found diverse applications ranging from magnetic resonance imaging2 to magneto-electronic devices3, while individual spins are considered as carriers for quantum information. Read-out of single spin states has been achieved using optical techniques4, and is within reach of magnetic resonance force microscopy5. However, electrical read-out of single spins6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13 has so far remained elusive. Here we demonstrate electrical single-shot measurement of the state of an individual electron spin in a semiconductor quantum dot14. We use spin-to-charge conversion of a single electron confined in the dot, and detect the single-electron charge using a quantum point contact; the spin measurement visibility is ∼65%. Furthermore, we observe very long single-spin energy relaxation times (up to ∼0.85 ms at a magnetic field of 8 T), which are encouraging for the use of electron spins as carriers of quantum information.

Cavity-enhanced optical readout of a single solid-state spin

Abstract:We demonstrate optical readout of a single electron spin using cavity quantum electrodynamics. The spin is trapped in a single quantum dot that is strongly coupled to a nanophotonic cavity. Selectively coupling one of the optical transitions of the quantum dot to the cavity mode results in a spin-dependent cavity reflectivity that enables projective spin measurements by monitoring the reflected intensity of an incident optical field. Using this approach, we demonstrate spin readout fidelity of 0.61 for a quantum dot that has a poor branching ratio of 0.43. Achieving this fidelity using resonance fluorescence from a bare dot would require 43 times improvement in photon collection efficiency.

Tuning Quantum Dot States with Optical Fields

Abstract:The discrete states resulting from three-dimensional confinement in semiconductor quantum dots retain much of the character of their bulk-band origins, for example their angular momentum and effective mass. In addition they have many features of discrete atomic-like single particle states. Strong optical field interactions and reasonable dephasing rates make this system attractive for basic quantum optics experiments, as well as applications in quantum information sciences. However, semiconductor quantum dots have large inhomogeneous state broadens due to variations in size and shape. In addition, epitaxial semiconductor quantum dots, one of the classes in common use, rarely have ideal symmetry. Here we show how an optical technique can be used to fine-tune the transition energies of semiconductor quantum dots states and if desired restore targeted symmetry elements. This approach can be applied to establish degeneracies in biexciton-exciton decays to form discrete entangled photon pairs or to establish indistinguishability between different quantum dots.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of a single electron spin in a double quantum dot (DQD) and its readout via a quantum point contact (QPC). We model the system microscopically and derive rate equations for the reduced electron density matrix of the DQD. Two cases with one and two electrons in the DQD are studied. In the one-electron case, with different Zeeman splittings in the two dots, the electron spin states are distinctly characterized by a constant and an oscillatory current through the QPC. In the two-electron case, the readout of the spin state of the electron in one of the dots called the qubit dot is essentially similar after considering hyperfine interactions between the electrons and the nuclear spins of the host materials and a uniform magnetic field applied to the DQD. Moreover, to ensure that an electron is properly injected into the qubit dot, we propose to determine the success of the electron injection from the variations of the QPC current after applying an oscillating magnetic field to the qubit dot.

Abstract:We present a new way of continuously reading-out the state of a single electronic spin. Our detection scheme is based on an exchange interaction between the electronic spin and a nearby read-out quantum dot. The coupling between the two systems results in a spin-dependent conductance through the read-out dot and establishes an all electrical and non-destructive single spin detection. With conductance variations up to 4% and read-out fidelities greater than 99.5%, this method represents an alternative to systems where spin to charge conversion cannot be implemented. Using a semi-classical approach, we present an asymetric exchange coupling model in good agreement with our experimental results.

Abstract:Spin quantum jumps in real time A promising approach to realizing a practical qubit scheme for quantum computation involves the optical control of single electron spins in semiconductor quantum dots. Rapid progress towards the reliable preparation and manipulation of the quantum states of such spins has been achieved in recent years. The final challenge is to carry out 'single shot' measurements of the electron spin without interfering with it. Vamivakas et al . have now developed a technique that enables such a measurement through coupling of one quantum dot to another. This quantum dot 'molecule', unlike its single quantum dot counterpart, allows separate and independent optical transitions for state preparation, manipulation and measurement, avoiding the dilemma of relying on the same transition to address the spin state of an electron. As a result, the authors show, it is possible to observe spin quantum jumps in real time.
A Charge and Spin Readout Scheme For Single Self-Assembled Quantum Dots

Abstract:We propose an all optical spin initialization and readout concept for single self assembled quantum dots and demonstrate its feasibility. Our approach is based on a gateable single dot photodiode structure that can be switched between charge and readout mode. After optical electron generation and storage, we propose to employ a spin-conditional absorption of a circularly polarized light pulse tuned to the single negatively charged exciton transition to convert the spin information of the resident electron to charge occupancy. Switching the device to the charge readout mode then allows us to probe the charge state of the quantum dot (1e, 2e) using non-resonant luminescence. The spin orientation of the resident electron is then reflected by the photoluminescence yield of doubly and singly charged transitions in the quantum dot. To verify the feasibility of this spin readout concept, we have applied time gated photoluminescence to confirm that selective optical charging and efficient non perturbative measurement of the charge state can be performed on the same dot. The results show that, by switching the electric field in the vicinity of the quantum dot, the charging rate can be switched between a regime of efficient electron generation and a readout regime, where the charge occupancy and, therefore, the spin state of the dot can be tested via PL over millisecond timescales, without altering it.

Abstract:The ability to discriminate between simultaneously occurring noise sources in the local environment of semiconductor InGaAs quantum dots, such as electric and magnetic field fluctuations, is key to understanding their respective dynamics and their effect on quantum dot coherence properties. We present a discriminatory approach to all-optical sensing based on two-color resonance fluorescence of a quantum dot charged with a single electron. Our measurements show that local magnetic field fluctuations due to nuclear spins in the absence of an external magnetic field are described by two correlation times, both in the microsecond regime. The nuclear spin bath dynamics show a strong dependence on the strength of resonant probing, with correlation times increasing by a factor of four as the optical transition is saturated. We interpret the behavior as motional averaging of both the Knight field of the resident electron spin and the hyperfine-mediated nuclear spin-spin interaction due to optically-induced electron spin flips.

Abstract:We study the electric-dipole transitions for a single electron in a double quantum dot located in a semiconductor nanowire. Enabled by spin-orbit coupling (SOC), electric-dipole spin resonance (EDSR) for such an electron can be generated via two mechanisms: the SOC-induced intradot pseudospin states mixing and the interdot spin-flipped tunneling. The EDSR frequency and strength are determined by these mechanisms together. For both mechanisms the electric-dipole transition rates are strongly dependent on the external magnetic field. Their competition can be revealed by increasing the magnetic field and/or the interdot distance for the double dot. To clarify whether the strong SOC significantly impact the electron state coherence, we also calculate relaxations from excited levels via phonon emission. We show that spin-flip relaxations can be effectively suppressed by the phonon bottleneck effect even at relatively low magnetic fields because of the very large g-factor of strong SOC materials such as InSb.
Optical measurement of electron spins in quantum dots: Quantum Zeno effects

Abstract:We describe the effects of the quantum back action under continuous optical measurement of electron spins in quantum dots. We consider the system excitation by elliptically polarized light close to the trion resonance, which allows for the simultaneous spin orientation and measurement. We microscopically demonstrate that the nuclei-induced spin relaxation can be both suppressed and accelerated by the continuous spin measurement due to the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects, respectively. Our theoretical predictions can be directly compared with the future experimental results and straightforwardly generalized for the pump-probe experiments.

Abstract:We have investigated the spin preparation efficiency by optical pumping of individual Mn atoms embedded in CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots. Monitoring the time dependence of the intensity of the fluorescence during the resonant optical pumping process in individual quantum dots allows to directly probe the dynamics of the initialization of the Mn spin. This technique presents the convenience of including preparation and read-out of the Mn spin in the same step. Our measurements demonstrate that Mn spin initialization, at zero magnetic field, can reach an efficiency of 75% and occurs in the tens of \emph{ns} range when a laser resonantly drives at saturation one of the quantum dot transition. We observe that the efficiency of optical pumping changes from dot to dot and is affected by a magnetic field of a few tens of mT applied in Voigt or Faraday configuration. This is attributed to the local strain distribution at the Mn location which predominantly determines the dynamics of the Mn spin under weak magnetic field. The spectral distribution of the spin-flip scattered photons from quantum dots presenting a weak optical pumping efficiency reveals a significant spin relaxation for the exciton split in the exchange field of the Mn spin.

Abstract:We temporally resolve the resonance fluorescence from an electron spin confined to a single self-assembled quantum dot to measure directly the spin's optical initialization and natural relaxation time scales at 4 K. Our measurements demonstrate that spin initialization occurs on the order of microseconds in the Faraday configuration when a laser resonantly drives the quantum dot transition. We show that the mechanism mediating the optically induced spin-flip changes from electron-nuclei interaction to hole-mixing interaction at 0.6 T external magnetic field. Spin relaxation measurements result in times on the order of milliseconds and suggest that a B-5 magnetic field dependence, due to spin-orbit coupling, is sustained all the way down to 2.2 T.

Abstract:Femtosecond-resolved Faraday rotation is used to probe spin dynamics in chemically synthesized CdSe quantum dots 22-80 Angstrom in diameter from T=6-282 K. The precession of optically injected spins in a transverse magnetic field indicates that the measured relaxation lifetime of the spin polarization is dominated by inhomogeneous dephasing, ranging from similar to 3 ns at zero field to <100 ps at 4 T. Fourier analysis reveals a multiperiodic Larmor precession, with several distinct g factors ranging from similar to 1.1 to 1.7. [S0163-1829(99)51316-7].

Abstract:Quantum state transfer from flying photons to stationary matter qubits is an important element in the realization of quantum networks. Self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots provide a promising solid-state platform hosting both single photon and spin, with an inherent light-matter interface. Here, we develop a method to coherently and actively control the single-photon frequency bins in superposition using electro-optic modulators, and measure the spin-photon entanglement with a fidelity of 0.796±0.020. Further, by Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-type state projection on the frequency, path, and polarization degrees of freedom of a single photon, we demonstrate quantum state transfer from a single photon to a single electron spin confined in an InGaAs quantum dot, separated by 5 m. The quantum state mapping from the photon's polarization to the electron's spin is demonstrated along three different axes on the Bloch sphere, with an average fidelity of 78.5%.

Abstract:Dynamics of two quantum dots coupled to electrodes with spin bias is investigated theoretically by means of the master equations. The two dots are coupled via exchange interaction. When the exchange interaction is much smaller than the lead-dot 2 coupling and dot 2 is under a symmetric spin bias, an initially fully polarized electron spin in dot 1 undergoes an oscillation with ignorable attenuation. Meanwhile, the direction of charge current flowing through dot 2 oscillates in the same period as that of the spin in dot 1. This allows to reverse or nearly noninvasively read out the spin in dot 1, by switching on and off the exchange interaction for a duration of half-integer or integer periods of the oscillation, respectively.

Abstract:The use of single electron spins in quantum dots as qubits requires detailed knowledge about the processes involved in their initialization and operation as well as their relaxation and decoherence. In optical schemes for such spin qubits, spin-flip Raman as well as Auger processes play an important role, in addition to environment-induced spin relaxation. In this paper, we demonstrate how to quantitatively access all the spin-related processes in one go by monitoring the charge fluctuations of the quantum dot. For this, we employ resonance fluorescence and analyze the charge fluctuations in terms of waiting-time distributions and full counting statistics characterized by factorial cumulants.

Abstract:The spin-flip rate that couples dark and bright excitons in self-assembled quantum dots is obtained from time-resolved spontaneous emission measurements in a modified local density of optical states. Employing this technique, we can separate effects due to non-radiative recombination and unambiguously record the spin-flip rate. The dependence of the spin-flip rate on emission energy is compared in detail to a recent model from the literature, where the spin flip is due to the combined action of short-range exchange interaction and acoustic phonons. We furthermore observe a surprising enhancement of the spin-flip rate close to a semiconductor-air interface, which illustrates the important role of interfaces for quantum dot based nanophotonic structures. Our work is an important step towards a full understanding of the complex dynamics of quantum dots in nanophotonic structures, such as photonic crystals, and dark excitons are potentially useful for long-lived coherent storage applications.

Abstract:We study a single dark N2 electron spin defect in diamond, which is magnetically coupled to a nearby nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center. We perform pulsed electron spin resonance on this single spin by mapping its state to the NV center spin and optically reading out the latter. Moreover, we show that the NV center's spin polarization can be transferred to the electron spin by combined two decoupling control-NOT gates. These two results allow us to extend the NV center's two key properties-optical spin polarization and detection-to any electron spin in its vicinity. This enables dark electron spins to be used as local quantum registers and engineerable memories.

Abstract:The Zeeman-split spin states of a single quantum dot can be used together with its optical trion transitions to form a spin–photon interface between a stationary (the spin) and a flying (the photon) quantum bit. In addition to long coherence times of the spin state itself, the limiting decoherence mechanisms of the trion states are of central importance. Here, we investigate in time-resolved resonance fluorescence the electron spin and trion dynamics in a single self-assembled quantum dot in an applied magnetic field of up to B=10 T. The quantum dot is only weakly coupled to an electron reservoir with tunneling rates of about 1ms−1. Using this sample structure, we can measure, in addition to the spin-flip rate of the electron and the spin-flip Raman rate of the trion transition, the Auger recombination process that scatters an Auger electron into the conduction band. The Auger effect destroys the radiative trion transition and leaves the quantum dot empty until an electron tunnels from the reservoir into the dot. The combination of an Auger recombination event with subsequent electron tunneling from the reservoir can flip the electron spin and thus constitutes another mechanism that limits the spin lifetime.
