Abstract:Transition-metal selenide electrodes have recently attracted increasing interest in supercapacitors resulting from their superior electrochemical performance, lower-cost, and environmental friendliness. Herein, we report a novel bimetallic Ni-Co selenide nanosheet/three-dimensional (3D) graphene/nickel foam binder-free electrode (NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs/3D G/NF) prepared via chemical vapor deposition followed by a simple two-step hydrothermal process in this paper. The NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs array vertically on 3D G/NF with a uniform and stable structure without using any chemical binders. This novel electrode is flexible, highly conductive, and exhibits an excellent specific capacitance of ∼742.4 F g-1 at 1 mA cm-2. Furthermore, with a 10-fold increase to 10 mA cm-2, it still retains 471.78 F g-1 and a high cycling stability of ∼83.8% of the initial retention after 1000 cycles at 10 mA cm-2, demonstrating that NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs/3D G/NF binder-free electrode has potential for energy storage application in high-performance supercapacitor fields.
Graphene-anchored NiCoO2 Nanoarrays As Supercapacitor Electrode for Enhanced Electrochemical Performance

Abstract:Porous flower-like NiCoO2 and graphene (NiCoO2/rGO) composite nanoarrays were grown directly on Ni foam (NF) without any binders by a simple hydrothermal synthesis method. Due to the porous flowers-like architecture of ultrathin NiCoO2 nanoflakes and the introduction of graphene with the high electrical conductivity, NiCoO2/rGO composite nanoarrays showed superior electrochemical performance including high specific capacity (1286C g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)), and good rate capability (1071.5C g(-1), 83.3% capacity retention at 12 A g(-1)). The asymmetric supercapacitor assembled with NiCoO2/rGO and rGO/NF also showed good performance with the energy density of 38.5 Wh kg(-1) at 288 W kg(-1) power density and good cycle stability of 86.9% after 2000 cycles. Abstract:Three dimensional (3D) hierarchical network configurations are composed of NiCo2S4 nanotube @Ni-Mn layered double hydroxide (LDH) arrays in situ grown on graphene sponge. The 3D graphene sponge with robust hierarchical porosity suitable for as a basal growth has been obtained from a colloidal dispersion of graphene oxide using a simple directional freeze-drying technique. The high conductive NiCo2S4 nanotube arrays grown on 3D graphene shows excellent pseudocapacity and good conductive support for high-performance Ni-Mn LDH. The 3D NiCo2S4@Ni-Mn LDH/GS shows a high specific capacitance (C-sp) 1740 mF cm(-2) at 1 mA cm(-2), even at 10 mA cm(-2), 1267.9 mF cm(-2) maintained. This high-performance composite electrode proposes a new and feasible general pathway as 3D electrode configuration for energy storage devices.

Abstract:The novel hierarchical Ni-Co sulfide nanosheet-nanotubes arrays were directly grown on Ni foam, as binder-free electrodes, have been successfully synthesized following a one-step facile hydrothermal method combined with a sulfide treatment. The initial value of the area capacitance achieved 2.28 F cm−2 at a current density of 1 mA cm−2. A high areal capacitance retention of 95.2% compared to activation-induced peak value is achieved after 3000 charge-discharge cycles, which is much better than counter Ni-Co oxide electrode (1.75 F cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2, 93.2% retention compared to activation induced peak value). The outstanding and excellent super capacitive performance is ascribed to ion-exchange reaction, which induces a flexible hollow nanotube feature and show higher conductivity, compared with Ni-Co oxide NWs. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) results confirmed that the synthesized electrode contains the lowest resistance at high, and at lower frequency, leading to easy penetration of electrolytes and fast transportation of electrons inside the electrode. In this proposed work, a one-step hydrothermal method has been followed, and provided for the sulfide-induced, with a noticeable electrochemical performance of nickel cobaltite compounds and supplying a promising route for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract:Transition metal oxide nanostructures are one of current investigation focuses for supercapacitors. We herein report a novel and facile approach to fabricate Co3O4 nanosheet arrays on 3D porous graphene/nickel foam. A graphene layer with the sharp edges and wrinkles is obtained on nickel foam by an electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The 2D thin Co3O4 nanosheets are further grown on the 3D porous graphene/nickel foam substrate through a hydrothermal synthesis, forming a 3D hierarchically porous architecture. The as-fabricated thin Co3O4 nanosheet array on graphene/nickel foam delivers a high specific capacitance of 3533 F g(-1) at a current of 1 A g(-1). The array electrode still shows a specific capacitance of 2222 F g(-1) even at a high rate (20 A g(-1)), demonstrating its prominent rate capability. Furthermore, the array electrode also exhibits the excellent electrochemical cycling stability with a specific capacitance of 2459 Fri after 2000 cycles at a current of 8 A g(-1). The superior pseudocapacitive performance of the array electrode can be attributed to its unique structure characteristics. The thin Co3O4 nanosheet array electrode with superior pseudocapacitive performance reveals the promising potential as a high-performance electrode for supercapacitors. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Electrodes for supercapacitors (SCs) with excellent capacity and rate performance have always been in high demand. Herein, Ni–Co–S nanosheet arrays were successfully anchored on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) covered Ni foam (denoted as Ni–Co–S–rGO/NF–1) by consecutive electrochemical methods and high-performance positive electrode material for SCs was obtained. It was worth mentioning that there were two innovations in this preparation: the first one was that synchronous electroreduction and electrodeposition of graphene oxide (GO) resulted in rGO tightly wrapped Ni foam (denoted as rGO/NF), which enhanced the electroconductibility of the substrate and achieved outstanding rate performance; the second one was that a two-step combination approach composed of cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique and potentiostatic technique was adopted to deposit Ni–Co–S nanosheet arrays, which ensured both higher specific capacity and relatively robust growth of Ni–Co–S on rGO/NF. On account of a synergistic effect of the Ni–Co–S and rGO as well as the unique thin sheet-like nanostructure, the as-prepared electrode revealed excellent supercapacitor properties, including higher specific capacity of 976 C g−1 at current density of 1 A g−1, impressive rate capability with 86.4 % retention at 60 A g−1, and long-term stability of 82.2 % capacity retention after 10,000 cycles. An asymmetric supercapacitor fabricated by the Ni–Co–S–rGO/NF–1 and activated carbon exhibited a maximum energy density of 27 Wh kg−1 at the power density of 801 W kg−1, and a power density of 8115 W kg−1 at the energy density of 11.0 Wh kg−1. The excellent performance of the Ni–Co–S–rGO/NF–1 electrode suggests that it could be the hopeful electrode materials for energy storage devices.

Abstract:A composite electrode with unique hetero-structure arrays was prepared by integration of Ni-Co-based mixed oxide NiCoO2 into 3D graphene supported by nickel foam (NiCoO2@rGO/NF). NiCoO2 arrays were directly grown on 3D graphene without any binder through a hydrothermal method. Further, the NiCoO2 arrays were composed of NiCoO2 nanowires on the surface of NiCoO2 ultrathin nanoflakes (nanoflakes@nanowires). Due to the unique hetero-structure arrays of NiCoO2 and the synergetic effect of NiCoO2/graphene, NiCoO2@rGO/NF shows higher specific capacitance of 1970 F g(-1) than pure NiCoO2/NF (1569 F g(-1)). The capacitance retention of 102% (1732 F g(-1)) is maintained after 2500 cycles for NiCoO2@rGO/NF, while the NiCoO2/NF is only 61%. Furthermore, the effect of different hydrothermal time on the morphologies and capacitive performance of NiCoO2@rGO/NF was also investigated. The optimum hydrothermal time may be 6 h; the corresponding NiCoO2@rGO/NF-6h shows the highest capacitance and best rate capability. Therefore, the reasonable combination of nanowires and nanoflakes can further enhance capacitance of NiCoO2. The asymmetric supercapacitor prepared by NiCoO2@rGO/NF and graphene/NF exhibits a maximum energy density of 42.3 Wh kg(-1) at power density of 0.4 kW kg(-1). Abstract:Pseudocapacitors store energy on/near the surface of electrode materials through redox reactions, whose capacitive activity thus depends on the electronic states of the surface and interface, and electronic conductivity of the electrode materials. Here, we report a simple strategy to prepare the hybrid nanostructure of NiCo2O4@rGO with the controllable composition by depositing graphene oxide (GO) on the NiCo2O4 scaffold combined with chemical reduction. By combining NiCo2O4 mesoporous nanosheets with reduced graphene oxide (rGO), the hybrid electrode shows significant improvement in electrical conductivity, as well as more electrochemically active sites and short transport path lengths for both electrons and ions. Moreover, resulting from the Schottky electric field at the interface of NiCo2O4 and rGO, NiCo2O4 exhibits superior electron collection efficiency, thus contributing to the redox reactions on/near the surface of NiCo2O4. Benefiting from the rational structural features and excellent electrical conductivity, the designed NiCo2O4@rGO hybrid electrode demonstrates high specific capacitance (3.6 F cm−2 at a current density of 5 mA cm−2), good rate capability and superior cycling stability (90% of the initial capacitance can be retained after 2000 charge/discharge cycles). This work provides a new strategy for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes by combining capacitive (especially carbons) and faradaic (redox electroactive) materials.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) electrodes, which are composed of thin inorganic pseudocapacitive nanowire networks, show high electrochemical capacities and excellent cyclic performance because of their high surface area, convenient ion/electron transport and mechanical stability. Herein, we reported the hydrothermal preparation of a 3D ultra-thin Ni/Co basic carbonate nanowire network with the aid of a small amount of graphene oxide (GO) (6 wt%) as both the binder and the conductive filler. Through using an electrochemical cyclic process, the Ni/Co basic carbonate nanowires were subsequently in situ converted to Ni/Co hydroxide nanowires with high electrochemical capacitance. The specific capacitance of the Ni/Co hydroxide nanowire/rGO hybrid networks achieved 1434 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1). Furthermore, the specific capacitance of the sample has no loss during the 5000 charge/discharge cycles. High performance Ni3S2/3D graphene/nickel foam composite electrode for supercapacitor applications

Abstract:Nano-structured Ni3S2 is regarded as one of the most promising supercapacitor (SC) electrode materials due to its unique heazlewoodite phase and high electronic conductivity. However, preparation of Ni3S2 nanostructures with controllable chemical stoichiometry and morphology is still a challenge issue. Herein, we report a novel Ni3S2/3D graphene/nickel foam (Ni3S2/3D G/NF) composite electrode prepared by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) followed by an electrodeposition. The as-prepared Ni3S2/3D G/NF composite electrode is stable with good chemical stoichiometry, binder-free and exhibits an excellent specific capacitance up to 2585 F/g with current density of 1 A/g,a high capacitance retention rate ~70.68% as the current density increases to 30 A/g, and a capacitance remaining ~88.9% after 5000 cycles of charge and discharge with the current density of 20 A/g. The perfect Ni3S2 heazlewoodite phase and good contact between Ni3S2 and the surface of 3D G/NF are believed to be responsible for the greatly improved conductivity and specific surface area of the as-prepare composite electrode. Our result has provided an effective way to significantly improve the capacitive property of Ni3S2 and shown a great potential for realizing its practical SC applications.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical NiCo2O4 nanoneedle arrays have been prepared on nickel foam via a facile hydrothermal method followed by annealing in air. Impressively, when investigated as binder-free supercapacitor electrodes, such unique NiCo2O4 nanoneedle arrays on Ni foam exhibit a superior specific capacitance of 2193 F g−1 and 1490 F g−1 at current densities of 1 and 10 A g−1 calculated based on the active mass of NiCo2O4, respectively. Furthermore, the areal capacitance is 3.71 F cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2 and 1.39 F cm−2 at 40 mA cm−2. The remarkable electrochemical performance is due to the hierarchical nanoneedle array structure with bottom crosslinked nanosheets, which has a large surface area, thus providing more sites to facilitate electrochemical reactions, rapid ion/electron transport, and enhanced strain accommodation. Our results demonstrate that the hierarchical NiCo2O4 nanoneedle arrays are a promising material as a binder-free electrode for high performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:High conductivity NiCo2S4 (NCS) nanosheets in situ grown in porous nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (PN-rGO) materials were successfully prepared via a simple hydrothermal method. A synergistic effect between the NCS and PN-rGO matrix is observed on the electrochemical performance of the composites. PN-rGO/NCS exhibits an equivalent ultralow diffusion resistance and charge transfer resistance (0.16 Ω), ultrahigh specific capacitance (1,687 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1), and an excellent rate capability (1,478 F g−1 at a current density of 10 A g−1). The asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) is designed with PN-rGO/NCS as the positive electrode and active carbon as the negative electrode. The ASC device exhibits a high capacitance (355.5 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1). Density functional theory calculations show PN-rGO/NCS to increase the electrical conductivity of the material, and concomitantly the electrochemical performance. The data suggest that the PN-rGO/NCS hybrid structure can be considered as a future supercapacitor electrode material.

Abstract:Designing a novel, efficient and cost-effective nanocomposite with the advantage of robust structure and outstanding conductivity is highly promising for the electrode materials of high-performance supercapacitors. Herein, we designed and synthesized a hierarchical structured NiMoO4@rGO/NF via a facile and scalable approach by growing NiMoO4 nanowires onto the skeleton of reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/Ni foam (NF). The as-made NiMoO4@rGO/NF exhibits a superior electrochemical behavior owing to the coupling effect of homogeneous NiMoO4 nanowires and high conductivity of rGO, and it exhibits a superb capacitance value of 1877 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 and shows a ultralong life span with over 98% capacitance retention after 4000 cycles at 5 A g−1 in 2 M KOH electrolyte. Moreover, an asymmetric device employing NiMoO4@rGO/NF composite and activated carbon is assembled with an aqueous electrolyte, and it displays a maximum energy density of 40 Wh kg−1 at a specific power 218.2 W kg−1. Interestingly, the asymmetric device can remain 111.2% of its initial value even after 8000 charge/discharge cycles. These results demonstrate that the NiMoO4@rGO/NF binder-free electrode provides greatly enhanced electrochemical performance and shows promising application as an anode for energy storage.

Abstract:A 3D hierarchical spherical honeycomb-like composite electrode materialof neodymium oxide (Nd2O3), cobalt tetraoxide (Co3O4), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) on nickel foam (named as Nd2O3/Co3O4/rGO/NF) were successfully fabricated by combining the hydrothermal synthesis method and the annealing process. Nickel foam with a three-dimensional spatial structure was used as the growth substrate without the use of any adhesives. The Nd2O3/Co3O4/rGO/NF composite has outstanding electrochemical performance and can be used directly as an electrode material for supercapacitors (SCs). By taking advantage of the large specific surface area of the electrode material, it effectively slows down the volume expansion of the active material caused by repeated charging and discharging processes, improves the electrode performance in terms of electrical conductivity, and significantly shortens the electron and ion transport paths. At a 1 A/g current density, the specific capacitance reaches a maximum value of 3359.6 F/g. A specific capacitance of 440.4 F/g with a current density of 0.5A/g is still possible from the built symmetric SCs. The capacitance retention rate is still 95.7% after 30,000 cycles of testing at a high current density of 10 A/g, and the energy density is 88.1 Wh/kg at a power density of 300 W/kg. The outcomes of the experiment demonstrate the significant potential and opportunity for this composite material to be used as an electrode material for SCs.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) NiCo2O4 nanosheet-coated three-dimensional graphene network (3DGN), which is then used as an electrode for high-rate, long-cycle-life supercapacitors. Using the 3DGN and nanoporous nanosheets, an ultrahigh specific capacitance (2173 F g(-1) at 6 A g(-1)), excellent rate capability (954 F g(-1) at 200 A g(-1)) and superior long-term cycling performance (94% capacitance retention after 14 000 cycles at 100 A g(-1)) are achieved.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) hybrid networks consisting of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets interconnected by Co3O4 nanowires (rGO/Co3O4), followed by the decoration of Fe2O3 nanospheres (NSs) (rGO/Co3O4@Fe2O3), were demonstrated by a facile hydrothermal method, with which the rGO/Co3O4 networks acted as nucleation sites for the in situ synthesis of Fe2O3 NSs. The intimate contacts between rGO, Co3O4 NWs and Fe2O3 NSs, which result in an excellent conductive behavior, provide a unique structure with huge potential for electrochemical property promoted electrochemical supercapacitors. The rGO/Co3O4@Fe2O3 hybrid networks as electrodes exhibit a high capacitance of 784 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 with 83% retention of the initial capacitance as the current density increases from 1 to 10 A g-1, which is explained by the graphene-based interconnected structure owing to the advantages of accommodating the volume expansion between Co3O4 NWs and Fe2O3 NSs. The supercapacitor was assembled by applying a nickel aluminum layered double hydroxide (NiAl-LDH) structure and rGO/Co3O4@Fe2O3 as the electrode materials and yields an energy density of 70.78 W h kg-1 at a power density of 0.29 kW kg-1. The energy density can maintain 24.24 W h kg-1 with 9.94 kW kg-1.
Spreading GO nanosheets-coated nickel foam decorated by NiCo2O4/NiCo2S4 nanoarrays for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes

Abstract:Porous nickel foam (NF) is often wrapped by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for loading active nanomaterials. To clarify the influence of the dispersion of graphene nanosheets in NF framework on the electrochemical performance, herein, spreading GO nanosheets-coated NF (NF@sGO) is developed via negative pressure immersion method, in which, GO sheets spreading on the macropores adjust the pore structure and enlarge the supporting surface of NF framework. Compared to the NF@rGO prepared by hydrothermal method, NF@sGO scaffold exhibits a high capacitance for the pseudocapacitance contributed by GO. Acting as a porous scaffold for growing NiCo2O4 nanoneedles, the NF@sGO/NiCo2O4 composite delivers a specific capacitance of 2522 F g−1 (1135 C g−1) at 1 A g−1, much higher than that of the control sample NF@rGO/NiCo2O4. To further improve the electrochemical performance of NF@sGO/NiCo2O4, thin NiCo2S4 nanosheets are decorated on NiCo2O4 nanoneedles. Optimized NF@sGO/NiCo2O4/NiCo2S4-0.02 sample delivers a maximum specific capacitance of 2980 F g−1 (1341 C g−1) at 1 A g−1 and a superior long-term cycling stability. The performances of NF@sGO/NiCo2O4 and NF@sGO/NiCo2O4/NiCo2S4-0.02 are both higher than existing composites. The superior electrochemical performance is attributed to the combination of novel NF@sGO scaffold and NiCo2O4 nanoneedles or optimized NiCo2O4/NiCo2S4 hybrid nanostructures. In view of the easy preparation and superior performance, NF@sGO scaffold has a promising prospect for preparing high-performance integrated electrodes.
