Impact of dopants on the sulfation, desulfation and NOx reduction performance of Ba-based NOx storage-reduction catalysts

Abstract:The performance of a NOx storage-reduction (NSR) catalyst is strongly dependent on the relative stabilities of nitrates and sulfates on the catalyst surface. This effort studies the effects of introducing 5mol% La, Ca, and K-dopants into a BaO phase of a model Pt/Ba/Al2O3 NSR catalyst. The dopants were chosen with a range of properties to affect the BaO lattice spacing and/or the number of oxygen vacancies. The resulting changes in the storage material, in turn, impact the stability of stored nitrates and sulfates, as measured by NOx conversions and desulfation temperatures. The Ca- and La-doped material shows equivalent or better NOx reduction performance between 200 and 400°C, while the K-doped NSR catalyst showed significant decreases in performance at 200°C but maintained the high performance at 300 and 400°C. Following the performance measurements, the samples are then sulfated to 5.5mgS/gcat and desulfated to 1000°C. All NSR catalysts generally show similar desulfation behavior, but in determining the temperature of 20% sulfur removal (T20%), it is shown that the Ca+Ba sample has a 25°C lower T20% than both the Ba-only and La+Ba samples, while K+Ba is 70°C higher. Additional Ca-based samples were than prepared at the 10, 20 and 100mol% levels. The higher Ca-doped materials show similar NOx reduction performance, but the 5% Ca+Ba sample maintains the lowest T20%. Interestingly, the Ca-only sample has a T20% that is 60°C higher than the Ba-only NSR catalyst, which indicates that the introduction of 5% Ca into the Ba-lattice has a synergistic effect in lowering the desulfation temperature.

Abstract:Perovskite (LaSr)MnIrO (x = 0 (LSM) and 0.05 (LSMI)) nanoparticles with particle size of 20-50 nm are prepared by the polymer-assisted chemical solution method and demonstrated as high performance bifunctional oxygen catalyst in alkaline solution. As compared with LSM, LSMI with the A-site deficiency and the B-site iridium (Ir)-doping has a larger lattice, lower valence state of transition metal, and weaker metal-OH bonding; therefore, it increases the concentration of oxygen vacancy and enhances both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). LSMI exhibits superior ORR performance with only 30 mV onset potential difference from the commercial Pt/C catalyst and significant enhancement in electrocatalytic activity in the OER process, resulting in the best oxygen electrode material among all the reported perovskite oxides. LSMI also exhibits high durability for both ORR (only 18 mV negative shift for the half-wave potential compared with the initial ORR) and OER process with 10% decay. The electrochemical results indicate that the A-site deficiency and Ir-doping in perovskite oxides could be promising catalysts for the applications in fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and solar fuel synthesis.
Performance of Modified La Xsr1- Xmno3 Perovskite Catalysts for NH3 Oxidation: TPD, DFT, and Kinetic Studies.

Abstract:The modified perovskites (La xSr1- xMnO3) were prepared using the selective dissolution method for the selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) of NH3. We found that more Mn4+ cations and active surface oxygen species formed on the catalyst's surface with increasing the dissolution time (dis). The 1h-dis catalyst exhibited excellent NH3 conversion, and it performed well in the presence of SO2 and H2O. The 10h-dis and 72h-dis catalysts produced considerable N2O and NO at high temperatures, while they were not detected from the fresh catalyst. Both temperature-programmed experiments and density functional theory calculations proved that NH3 strongly and mostly bonded to the B-site cations of the perovskite framework rather than A-site cations: this framework limited the bonding of SO2 to the surface. The reducibility increased superfluously after more than 10 h of immersion. The adsorptions of NH3 on Mn4+ exposed surface were stronger than that on La3+ or Sr4+ exposed surfaces. The selective catalytic reduction, nonselective catalytic reduction, and catalytic oxidation reactions all contributed to NH3 conversion. The formed NO from catalytic oxidation preferred to react with -NH2/-NH to form N2/N2O.
Experiment of NO_x Storage/Reduction Performance on Perovskite Catalyst Using DME as Reducer

Abstract:Using LaCoO3/K2CO3/ Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 as the catalyst,dimethyl ether(DME)as the reducer,an investigation on thermal stability of the stored NOx over the NSR catalyst by temperature programmed desorption(TPD) and DME temperature programmed surface reaction(DME-TPSR)method was made.NOx storage and NOx storage/reduction(NSR)performance were also studied using NOx adsorption experiment at constant temperature and storage-reduction experiment.Meanwhile,the influence of reaction temperature and regeneration time on the DME-NSR process was studied.Experimental result shows that LaCoO3/K2CO3/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 perovskite catalyst gives good NOx storage and oxidation property.NOx conversion ratio is 60%—80% at the temperatures of 350℃ and 400℃.

Abstract:Selective dissolution of perovskite A site (A of ABO3 structure) was performed on the La1 - xSrxCoO3 catalysts for the NOx storage and reduction (NSR) reaction. The surface area of the catalysts were enhanced using dilute HNO3 impregnation to dissolve Sr. Inactive SrCO3 was removed effectively within 6 h, and the catalyst preserved the perovskite framework after 24 h of treatment. The tuned catalysts exhibited higher NSR performance (both NOx storage and NO-to-NO2 oxidation) under lean-burn and fuel-rich cycles at 250 °C. Large amounts of NOx adsorption were due to the increase of nitrate/nitrite species bonding to the A site and the growth of newly formed monodentate nitrate species. Nitrate species were stored stably on the partial exposed Sr(2+) cations. These exposed Sr(2+) cations played an important role on the NOx reduction by C3H6. High NO-to-NO2 oxidation ability was due to the generation of oxygen defects and Co(2+)-Co(3+) redox couples, which resulted from B-site exsolution induced by A-site dissolution. Hence, our method is facile to modify the surface structures of perovskite catalysts and provides a new strategy to obtain highly active catalysts for the NSR reaction.
Insights into the Sm/Zr Co-Doping Effects on N2 Selectivity and SO2 Resistance of a MnOx-TiO2 Catalyst for the NH3-SCR Reaction

Abstract:A series of Sm- and/or Zr-doped MnOx-TiO2 catalysts were prepared, and the catalysts exhibited better N-2 selectivity and SO2 resistance than the undoped MnOx-TiO2 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3 (NH3-SCR). The reasons for the good N-2 selectivity and SO2D resistance of the catalysts were proposed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that electron transfer between the manganese and samarium species by Mn4+ + Sm2+ <-> Mn3+ + Sm3+ redox cycles occurred in the Sm-containing catalysts. Furthermore, electron transfer from Sm2+ to Mn4+ suppressed electron transfer from NH3 to Mn4+, inhibiting the formation of NH2 or NH. Thus, the pathway for NH generation was removed, and the reaction of 2NH + 4NO -> 3N(2)O + H2O was prevented. Consequently, the N-2 selectivity of the NH3-SCR reaction was enhanced. In situ diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) combined with thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry and mass spectrometry (TG-DSC-MS) results revealed that the deposition rate of sulfate species decreases after Sm doping, which was also attributed to the suppressed electron transfer from SO2 to Mn4+, i.e., the oxidation of SO2 to SO3. Thus, the catalysts exhibited better SO2 resistance.
Enhancement of NO Oxidation Activity and SO2 Resistance over LaMnO3+δ Perovskites Catalysts with Metal Substitution and Acid Treatment

Abstract:NOx control by catalytic oxidation combined with wet absorption has been a promising technology for the flue gas treatment of industrial boiler and furnace. LaMnO3+delta perovskites were investigated as catalysts for NO oxidation. The comparison between metal substitution of La and Mn cations was researched. The activity results indicated that La site substitution was more favorable for NO oxidation than Mn site substitution. LaCoMnO exhibited the highest activity in NO oxidation with maximum value of 83.74% at 250 degrees C. That value further increased to 89.96% after acid etching (LaCoMnO-A), and closely, such high value of 89.78% was achieved at 220 degrees C. The surface area was significantly improved by acid etching, i.e., from 47.0 m(2)/g to 212.0 m(2)/g, Tremendous changes in crystalline structure and morphology were taken place, i.e., perovskites phase disappeared and MnO2 was detected instead; compact amorphous particle morphology was replaced by multiple layer structure. Even more, Mn4+ ions and oxygen vacancies accumulated on the surface were improved. Deservedly, the redox property was enhanced enormously, especially at low temperature. Subsequently, SO2 poisoning tests were conducted at 250 degrees C under 20 ppm SO2. Interestingly, no decrease was observed for LaCoMnO-A within 480-min SO2 poisoning test, which was totally contrasted with the nearly complete deactivation results of LaCoMnO. In-situ DRIFTS measurements validated nitrate disappeared and replaced by sulfate formation on the catalyst surface. Merely, under low-concentration SO2 atmosphere, the monodentate nitrate and bidentate nitrate were destroyed, while the free nitrates exhibited higher resistance. Overall, the acid etching improved the catalyst resistance to SO2, which may have the potential to apply in the flue gas treatment of low-sulfur and sulfur-free fuel fired boiler and furnace.
Nox Storage Performance of Alkaline Earth-Doped Perovskite-Type Bafeo3 Catalysts

Abstract:A series of Ba1-xMxFeO3 (M= Mg, Ca, Sr; x=0, 0.1, 0.2) perovskites were prepared by the sol-gel method as NOx storage reduction (NSR) catalysts. The effect of doping with alkaline earth metals (Mg, Ca, and Sr) on the NOx storage and oxidation performance of the BaFeO3 perovskites was investigated. Doping with Mg enhanced the NOx storage capacity (NSC) of the BaFeO3 perovskites in the temperature range 250-400 degrees C, the Ba0.8Mg0.2FeO3 perovskite exhibited the best NOx storage performance, which reached its maximum at 350 degrees C, with NSC>1200 mu mol . g(-1) and NO -> NO2 conversion of 53.4%. Compared with BaFeO3, the monodentate nitrate appeared clearly for the Ba0.8Mg0.2FeO3 sample after storing NOx at 250 degrees C. The amount of the monodentate nitrate on Ba0.8Mg0.2FeO3 varied with the NOx storage temperature in a similar manner to that of its NSC. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated that doping with Mg induced an A-site deficient perovskite structure in BaFeO3, which readily generates oxygen vacancies that act as the active sites for NOx adsorption. Moreover, the residual MgO on the catalyst might also improve the NSC of the sample by forming the monodentate nitrate.
Selective Catalytic Reduction ofNOx by Methane over La(1-x)SrxMnO3 Perovskites

Abstract:Powder perovskite-type La(1-x)SrxMnO3(x=0,0.2,0.4)were synthesized by sol-gel method,and supported La(1-x)SrxMnO3(x=0.2,0.4)were synthesized by excessive dipping method. The powders were characterized by XRD and SEM,and supported catalysts were then submitted to activity tests in the selective catalytic reduction(SCR)of NO by meth-ane with or without O2. The experimental results showed that the crystal structure of Sr-substituted samples was the charac-teristic perovskite structure,and what’s more,La0.8,Sr0.2,MnO3possessed a porous structure. In the absence of O2,the reduction of NOx by CH4 was performed over La0.8,Sr0.2,MnO3and La0.6,Sr0.4,MnO3,leading to a maximum of 90% at 800-900,℃. The catalytic performance of La0.8,Sr0.2,MnO3 could reach a maximum of 80% at 800,℃ with 6% O2,on the other hand,the performance of La0.6,Sr0.4,MnO3was suppressed by the presence of O2. The catalytic performance was improved by both La0.8,Sr0.2,MnO3and La0.6,Sr0.4,MnO3 at 500-600,℃.

Abstract:This study evaluated the NOx adsorption and desorption performance as well as the casual relationship underlying a Mn-incorporated catalyst (Pt/Ba/Ce/xMn/γ-Al2O3). NOx adsorption and desorption are regarded as a prominent index for the NOx removal performance of NOx storage and reduction; we utilized NOx storage experiments with various inlet NO and O2 concentrations and cycling adsorption/desorption experiments with a couple of adsorption time protocols for performance evaluation. In-suit DRIFT and NOx-TPD tests were implemented to reveal the instant stored species and their thermal stability. Eight percent of Mn catalyst at 350 °C was adopted in the described experiments for its desirable NOx adsorption characteristics. The optimal NOx storage performance was found under 10% O2, deteriorating when the concentration was further increased. Furthermore, elevating NO concentration impaired the NOx adsorption due to the low NO2/NOx ratio. It was also found that shorter adsorption time facilitated NOx removal via maintaining an unsaturated state for active storage components in terms of a fixed desorption time. The stored species existed as nitrites and nitrates with a good low-temperature thermal stability which however decayed at higher temperatures as exhibited in the DRIFT and NOx-TPD tests. These findings provided invaluable information for the application of Mn-incorporated catalyst for NOx removal in diesel exhaust purification to relieve the aerial pollution.
Tuning the Phase Transition of SrFeO3-delta by Mn toward Enhanced Catalytic Activity and CO2 Resistance for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Developing high-performance cathodes with sufficient stability against CO2 rooting in ambient atmosphere is crucial to realizing the practical application of solid-oxide fuel cells. Herein, the Mn dopant is investigated to regulate the phase structure and cathode performance of SrFeO(3-delta )perovskites through partially replacing the B-site Fe. Compared with parent SrFeO3-delta, Mn-doped materials, SrFe1-xMnxO3-delta (x = 0.05 and 0.1), show stabilized cubic perovskites at room temperature. Meanwhile, doping Mn accelerates the oxygen reduction reaction process, showing a reduced polarization resistance of 0.155 Omega.cm(2) at 700 degrees C for SrFe0.95Mn0.05O3-delta, which is less than 30% of SrFeO3-delta. In addition, the Mn dopant improves the chemical oxygen surface exchange and bulk diffusion coefficients. Furthermore, Mn enhances the tolerance toward CO2 corrosion in various CO2 atmospheres. Density functional theory calculations also reveal that Mn can strengthen the structural stability and increase the activity for the oxygen reduction reaction.
Oxygen Storage Capacity and Structural Properties of Ni-doped LaMnO3 Perovskites

Abstract:A series of Ni doped LaMnO3 perovskites were prepared by a sol-gel method as oxygen storage materials. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray adsorption fine structure (XAFS), oxygen storage capacity (OSC) and H-2-temperature program reduction (TPR) measurements were performed to investigate the OSC of the perovskites as well as the effects of Ni on the structural properties. The results showed that the Ni-doped LaMnO3 perovskite exhibited very large dynamic OSC and high oxygen release rate, which provided a possibility to serve as an oxygen storage material candidate in three-way catalysts. The available oxygen species below 500 degrees C primarily originated from the redox reaction between Mn4+ and Mn3+, and the more Mn4+ were favourable to the releasable oxygen. The doping of appropriate Ni ions promoted the OSC of the LaMnO3 perovskites by increasing the Me4+ content and adjusting the structural defects. On the other hand, the doped Ni ions could make the BO6 distortion disappearing in the LaMnO3 perovskites to reduce the lattice oxygen activity. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Metals doping effect of perovskite–type La-Mn oxides for NH 3 -SCR reaction at low temperature

Abstract:Doping of perovskites with the heteroatoms has emerged as an additional lever, a dimension beyond structural perfection and compositional distinction, for the alteration of many properties of perovskites. In this work, a series of different metals were doped via citric acid sol–gel method to investigate their influences on the structure and catalytic performance of La-Mn perovskite oxides for NH 3 -SCR reaction. It is found that Zr doped La-Mn oxides (LMZr) displays better low-temperature deNO x performance (T 90 = 118 °C) than other metal doped catalysts. Such a result is mainly attributed to the increase of Lewis acid sites, surface Mn 4+ and adsorbed oxygen species. Besides, La-Mn perovskite doped with Sr, Ce, Y and Al can also obviously improve low-temperature deNO x activity and N 2 selectivity. These doped metals mainly change the electron transfer between different cations, thus changing the valence distribution of Mn on the surface, meanwhile, metal doping changes the crystalline size of the catalysts, thereby affecting the adsorption and activation of NH 3 and O 2 involved in the removal of NO. Although other metal doping alters the tolerance of the La-Mn catalyst to SO 2 and/or H 2 O, SO 2 is inevitably oxidized to S 6+ and deposits on the catalyst surface. Zr or Ce doping significantly enhances the tolerance to SO 2 and/or H 2 O, but they have a different mechanism. Zr reduces the deposition rate of sulfate while Ce reacts with SO 2 to form Ce 2 (SO x ) 3 to protect Mn active species. This paper highlights the importance of Lewis acid, Mn 4+ content and adsorbed oxygen in the NH 3 -SCR reaction.

Abstract:Electrochemical N-2 reduction reaction (NRR) is an environmentally benign and sustainable approach for NH3 synthesis under ambient conditions, which needs efficient electrocatalyst to meet the enormous challenge of activating the inert N-2 molecule. Recently, TiO2 emerges as an active NRR electrocatalyst with advantages of abundance, nontoxicity, and high thermal stability. Heteroatom doping is an effective oxygen vacancy introduction strategy to manufacture unique electron and structure properties of metal oxides, which will greatly influence the catalysts' activity. In this work, we developed Mn-doped TiO2 nanospheres (Mn-TiO2) for electrochemical NRR. In 0.1 M Na2SO4, Mn-TiO2 shows a large NH3 yield rate of 20.05 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1) and a high Faradaic efficiency of 11.93%, which are much higher than undoped TiO2. The mechanism of performance improvement is uncovered by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:To overcome the inherent challenge of NOx reduction in the net oxidizing environment of diesel engine exhaust, the NOx storage and reduction (NSR) concept was proposed in 1995, soon developed and commercialized as a promising DeNOx technique over the past two decades. Years of practice suggest that it is a tailor-made technique for light-duty diesel vehicles, with the advantage of being space saving, cost effective, and efficient in NOx abatement; however, the over-reliance of NSR catalysts on high loadings of Pt has always been the bottleneck for its wide application. There remains fervent interest in searching for efficient, economical, and durable alternatives. To date, La-based perovskites are the most explored promising candidate, showing prominent structural and thermal stability and redox property. The perovskite-type oxide structure enables the coupling of redox and storage centers with homogeneous distribution, which maximizes the contact area for NOx spillover and contributes to efficient NOx storage and reduction. Moreover, the wide range of possible cationic substitutions in perovskite generates great flexibility, yielding various formulations with interesting features desirable for the NSR process. Herein, this review provides an overview of the features and performances of La-based perovskite in NO oxidation, NOx storage, and NOx reduction, and in this way comprehensively evaluates its potential to substitute Pt and further improve the DeNOx efficiency of the current NSR catalyst. The fundamental structure–property relationships are summarized and highlighted to instruct rational catalyst design. The critical research needs and essential aspects in catalyst design, including poisoner resistance and catalyst sustainability, are finally addressed to inspire the future development of perovskite material for practical application.

Mesoporous MnOx-CeO2 composites for NH3-SCR: the effect of preparation methods and a third dopant

Abstract:In this study, different preparation methods including an oxalate route, a nano-casting strategy and a traditional co-precipitation route were applied to obtain MnOx-CeO2 mixed oxides for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3. The catalyst prepared from the oxalate route showed improved performance for NOx conversion and SO2 + H2O durability. To further improve the SO2 and H2O resistance of catalysts, ternary oxides were prepared from the oxalate route. The catalysts were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), SO2 temperature-programmed desorption (SO2-TPD), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS). The nickel-manganese-cerium ternary oxide showed the best SO2 and H2O durability. The reason can be ascribed to its smaller pores, amorphous structure, and moderate amount of surface Mn3+/oxygen species, which could decrease chemical adsorption of SO2.
SO2 Resisting Pd-doped Pr1-x Cex MnO3 Perovskites for Efficient Denitration at Low Temperature

Abstract:H2 -SCR is served as the promising technology for the controlling of NOx emission, and the Pd-based derivative catalyst exhibited high NOx reduction performance. Effectively regulating the electronic configuration of the active component is favorable to the rational optimization of noble Pd. In this work, a series of Pr1-x Cex Mn1-y Pdy O3 @Ni were successfully synthesized and exhibited superior NO conversion efficiency at low temperatures. 92.7 % conversion efficiency was achieved at 200 °C over Pr0.9 Ce0.1 Mn0.9 Pd0.1 O3 @Ni in the presence of 4 % O2 with a GHSV of 32000 h-1 . Meanwhile, the outstanding performance was obtained in the resistance to SO2 (200 ppm) and H2 O (8 %). Deduced from the results of XRD, Raman, XPS, and H2 -TPR, the modification of d orbit states in palladium was confirmed originating from the incorporation in the B site of Pr0.9 Ce0.1 Mn0.9 Pd0.1 O3 . The existence of higher valence (Pd3+ and Pd4+ ) than the bivalence in Pr0.9 Ce0.1 Mn0.9 Pd0.1 O3 catalyst was evidenced by XPS analysis. Our research provides a new sight into the H2 -SCR through the higher utilization of Pd.
Bimetallic Modification of Mnfeo X Nanobelts with Nb and Nd for Enhanced Low-Temperature De-No X Performance and So2 Tolerance

Abstract:Nitrogen oxide (NOx) is one of the key factors contributing to air pollution, and selective catalytic reduction with ammonia (NH3-SCR) is widely used for denitrification (de-NOx). To effectively deal with the NOx pollution, it is urgent to develop efficient catalyst working at below 300 ???C with a wide operating temperature window. Herein, a series of ferromanganese oxides (MnFeOx) nanobelts are bimetallically modified with niobium (Nb) and neodymium (Nd) for the first time via electrospinning method. The resultant MnFeNbNdOx catalysts present improved low-temperature de-NOx performance and sulfur dioxide (SO2) tolerance, particularly MnFeNb0.2Nd0.1Ox who achieves a NOx conversion up to over 90 % during the range of 120???330 ???C and an enhanced tolerance of water (H2O) and SO2. Experimental and theoretical calculations confirm that strong adsorption of nitric oxide (NO) and ammonia (NH3) and weak adsorption of SO2 with the synergy of Nd, Nb and Mn enable MnFeNb0.2Nd0.1Ox excellent SCR activity and good SO2 tolerance. In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS) further reveal that the de-NOx reaction over MnFeNb0.2Nd0.1Ox follows both EleyRideal (E-R) and Langmuir-Hinshel-wood (L-H) mechanisms. This study will inspire the further design and study of the synergy of transition metals and rare earth elements for de-NOx.
