Abstract:Organometal halide perovskite based solar cells have emerged as one of the most promising candidates for low-cost and high-efficiency solar cell technologies.Here a Vapor Transfer Method(VTM)is used to fabricate high quality perovskite thin films in a balanced vacuum capsule.By adjusting the reaction temperature,CH 3 NH 3 I saturated vapor which then reacts with PbI 2 films can be controlled and the formation process of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 perovskite films can be further influenced.Prepared perovskite films which exhibit pure phase,smooth surface and high crystallinity are assembled into planar heterojunction inverted solar cells.The whole fabrication process of solar cell devices is organic solution free.Finally,the champion cell achieved power conversion efficiency(PCE)of 13.08%with negligible current–voltage hysteresis under fully open-air conditions.The photovoltaic performance could be further enhanced by optimizing perovskite composition and the device structure.

Abstract:The photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) is extremely dependent on the morphology and crystallization of the perovskite film, which is affected by the deposition method. In this work, a new approach is demonstrated for forming the PbI2 nanostructure and the use of high CH3NH3I concentration which are adopted to form high-quality (smooth and PbI2 residue-free) perovskite film with better photovoltaic performances. On the one hand, self-assembled porous PbI2 is formed by incorporating small amount of rationally chosen additives into the PbI2 precursor solutions, which significantly facilitate the conversion of perovskite without any PbI2 residue. On the other hand, by employing a relatively high CH3NH3I concentration, a firmly crystallized and uniform CH3NH3PbI3 film is formed. As a result, a promising power conversion efficiency of 16.21% is achieved in planar-heterojunction PVSCs. Furthermore, it is experimentally demonstrated that the PbI2 residue in perovskite film has a negative effect on the long-term stability of devices.
Preparation of CH3NH3PbI3 thin films with tens of micrometer scale at high temperature

Abstract:The fabrication of high-quality organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskite layers is the key prerequisite for the realization of high efficient photon energy harvest and electric energy conversion in their related solar cells. In this article, we report a novel fabrication technique of CH3NH3PbI3 layer based on high temperature chemical vapor reaction. CH3NH3PbI3 layers have been prepared by the reaction of PbI2 films which were deposited by pulsed laser deposition, with CH3NH3I vapor at various temperatures from 160 oC to 210 oC. X-ray diffraction patterns confirm the formation of pure phase, and photoluminescence spectra show the strong peak at around 760 nm. Scanning electron microscopy images confirm the significantly increased average grain size from nearly 1 {\mu}m at low reaction temperature of 160 oC to more than 10 {\mu}m at high reaction temperature of 200 oC. The solar cells were fabricated, and short-circuit current density of 15.75 mA/cm2, open-circuit voltage of 0.49 V and fill factor of 71.66% have been obtained.

Applicability of a Function-Based Approach to Informed Consent in International Settings

Abstract:The requirement for U.S. investigators to obtain “traditional” in-depth informed consent consisting of the eight “required” elements when performing collaborative research in international settings can present significant cultural challenges to obtaining individual informed consent and hence preclude the conduct of important research. The Common Rule, however, offers flexibility by specifying four criteria for when a waiver of consent can be approved or when any of the eight required elements of informed consent can be “altered” (the same standards apply to both situations). These criteria include: (1) subjects are exposed to no more than minimal risk; (2) the waiver or alteration does not adversely affect subject rights and welfare; (3) the research could not practicably be carried out without the waiver or alteration; and (4) subjects will be provided with additional pertinent information after participation, when appropriate (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 1991a). However, institutional review boards (IRBs) may interpret the “impracticableness” requirement narrowly; use variable concepts of “minimal risks”; and link participants’ “rights” exclusively to autonomy interests, which may not be relevant in other cultural contexts. Neil Dickert and colleagues reframe the concept of a “valid” consent by detailing other ethical functions that consent promotes, beyond that of an autonomous authorization. Several focused at the participant level include (a) providing transparency, (b) allowing control and authorization, (c) promoting concordance with participants’ values, and (d) protecting and promoting welfare interests (Dickert et al. 2017). Their analysis helps them argue that it would still be ethically meaningful to partially engage potential participants in enrollment decisions with an “altered” consent process rather than a complete waiver in certain types of research. Our agenda is different, as we intend to show how consideration of their additional ethical functions can broaden the meaning of “impracticableness” and expand on the concept of “rights” to justify an “altered” consent process rather than requiring a traditional in-depth informed consent in international settings where different cultural norms exist. We anchor our discussion on a case involving a randomized crossover trial comparing adjuvant surgical oophorectomy and tamoxifen against placebo for breast cancer in Vietnam that took place in 1992–1993 and represented collaborative research between U.S. and local investigators (Love and Fost 1997). Due to lack of resources and systems of care in Vietnam, systemic adjuvant treatments were only occasionally used and when administered, followed regimens unlikely to achieve effectiveness. The investigators were made aware that it was not customary in Vietnam for patients to participate in their own medical decisions in the way that is normative in Western cultures. Patients expect and look to their physicians to tell them the appropriate treatment; Western notions of informed consent are inconsistent with a paternalistic style that is preferred by Vietnamese patients. While it was believed that it might be technically possible, though difficult, to discuss with Vietnamese women alternative options, an informed consent process that included alternative interventions would not be functionally relevant, as patients would defer to their doctors’ decisions regarding

Abstract:Solar cells incorporating lead halide-based perovskite absorbers can exhibit impressive power conversion efficiencies (PCEs), recently surpassing 15%. Despite rapid developments, achieving precise control over the morphologies of the perovskite films (minimizing pore formation) and enhanced stability and reproducibility of the devices remain challenging, both of which are necessary for further advancements. Here we demonstrate vacuum-assisted thermal annealing as an effective means for controlling the composition and morphology of the CH(3)NH(3)PbI(3) films formed from the precursors of PbCl(2) and CH(3)NH(3)I. We identify the critical role played by the byproduct of CH(3)NH(3)Cl on the formation and the photovoltaic performance of the perovskite film. By completely removing the byproduct through our vacuum-assisted thermal annealing approach, we are able to produce pure, pore-free planar CH(3)NH(3)PbI(3) films with high PCE reaching 14.5% in solar cell device. Importantly, the removal of CH(3)NH(3)Cl significantly improves the device stability and reproducibility with a standard deviation of only 0.92% in PCE as well as strongly reducing the photocurrent hysteresis.
Pseudohalide-Induced Recrystallization Engineering for CH3NH3PbI3 Film and Its Application in Highly Efficient Inverted Planar Heterojunction Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:High crystallinity and compactness of the active layer is essential for metal-halide perovskite solar cells. Here, a simple pseudohalide-induced film retreatment technology is developed as the passivation for preformed perovskite film. It is found that the retreatment process yields a controllable decomposition-to-recrystallization evolution of the perovskite film. Corresponding, it remarkably enlarges the grain size of the film in all directions, as well as improving the crystallinity and hindering the trap density. Meanwhile, owing to an intermediate catalytic effect of the pseudohalide compound (NH4SCN), no crystal orientation changing and no impurity introduction in the modified film. By integrating the modified perovskite film into the planar heterojunction solar cells, a champion power conversion efficiency of 19.44% with a stabilized output efficiency of 19.02% under 1 sun illumination is obtained, exhibiting a negligible current density-voltage hysteresis. Moreover, such a facile and low-temperature film retreatment approach guarantees the application in flexible devices, showing a best power conversion efficiency of 17.04%.

Abstract:In the present work, we proposed an improved two-step deposition method by optimizing the reaction temperature and the dipping time for the fabrication of perovskite films.The perovskite film fabricated at 70.exhibits a full surface coverage and a smooth uniform crystal morphology with a particle size up to micrometer scale.The corresponding inverted perovskite solar cell with a structure of ITO/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene-sulfonate)(PEDOT: PSS)/CH3NH3PbI3/C-60/2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP)/Ag displayed a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.6% than that of the device fabricated at 20 degrees C(8.06%), as well as the high reproducibility.The small but meaningful modification for two-step deposition would provide an efficient and convenient way to optimize planar perovskite solar cells and facilitate the potential applications of perovskite solar cells more widely.

Abstract:In this work, solvent annealing process for CH3NH3PbI3 thin film prepared by single source evaporation was reported. Characterized by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscope (EDS), ultraviolet-visible (UV) spectrophotometer, and the photoluminescence (PL) spectrometer, our method ensured higher quality film with crystallinity, composition, well-defined grain structure, and reproducibility. The optimized solar cell device based on the structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/CH3NH3PbI3/PCBM/Ag achieved better performance in power conversion efficiency from 2.64% to 9.92%, providing an effective method to optimize the quality of perovskite film for solar cell application.

Abstract:Perovskite-structured organic-inorganic materials such as CH3NH3PbI3 are attracting much interest in the scientific community because of their abilities to function as revolutionary light harvesters and charge transfer materials for solar cells. To achieve high power conversion efficiency (PCE), it is critical to optimize the perovskite film layer. This paper reports the temperature and concentration controls on the two-step solution process. A diffusion-controlled growth mechanism is proposed for this process in tuning the morphology and purity of the perovskite film, which are proven to be important factors contributing to the photovoltaic performance. The highest PCE of 11.92% is achieved with an optimized perovskite crystal size of similar to 150 nm and an appropriate amount of residual PbI2. This study sheds light on the design and fabrication of highly efficient, low-cost, solution-processed perovskite solar cells. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A homogenous coverage of the CH3NH3PbI3 light absorption layer is crucially important for a high-performance metal–organic halide perovskite solar cell (PSC). Herein, we found that a facile spray-assisted process instead of the commonly used dipping process in a two-step spin-coating method can effectively reduce the roughness (of RMS only 16nm), enhance the coverage of the light absorption layer and eliminate the pinholes in the layer. The experimental results demonstrated that the PSC's average open-circuit voltage (Voc) has been raised up from 0.823±0.105V to 0.940±0.008V by the spray-assisted process. It benefits from the low leakage possibility between the hole-transport-material (HTM) and the mesoporous TiO2 layer when a smooth and pinhole-free light absorption layer has successfully formed. Finally the average power conversion efficiencies of the mesostructure PSCs could be promoted by 25% approximately.
Facile Face-Down Annealing Triggered Remarkable Texture Development in CH3NH3PbI3 Films for High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells.

Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate that the facile face-down annealing route which effectively confines the evaporation of residual solvent molecules in one-step deposited precursor films can controllably enable the formation of (110) textured CH3NH3PbI3 films consisting of high-crystallinity well-ordered micrometer-sized grains that span vertically the entire film thickness. Such microstructural features dramatically decrease nonradiative recombination sites as well as greatly improve the transport property of charge carries in the films compared with that of the nontextured ones obtained by the conventional annealing route. As a consequence, the planar-heterojunction perovskite solar cells with these textured CH3NH3PbI3 films exhibit significantly enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) along with small hysteresis and excellent stability. The champion cell yields impressive PCE boosting to 18.64% and a stabilized value of around 17.22%. Particularly, it can maintain 86% of its initial value after storage for 20 days in ambient conditions with relative humidity of 10-20%. Our work suggests a facile and effective route for further boosting the efficiency and stability of low-cost perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Methylammoniumn lead iodide perovskites have attracted great attention in photovoltaic research community. In this work, we demonstrate the results of studies focusing on the chemical reaction of CH3NH3PbI3-xClx layer formation during the annealing of perovskite precursor films. We identified two kinds of grain morphologies during the formation of perovskite films grown from non-stoichiometric precursor solution. To form single-phase and high absorbance perovskite films, higher concentration of chloride in precursor solution needs longer annealing time and only a very low Cl content could be incorporated in the final CH3NH3PbI3-xClx films. Adding PbCl2–3CH3NH3I to PbI2–CH3NH3I precursor solution can allow a good control of the growth rate and morphology for the final perovskite film, and is beneficial to the photovoltaic performance of perovskite devices. By employing the precursor solutions of PbCl2, PbI2 and CH3NH3I with a mole ratio of 1:1:4 and inserting an ultrathin amino-functionalized polymer interlayer, we achieved planar perovskite solar cell with maximum power conversion efficiency of over 15%.

Abstract:A smooth and compact light absorption perovskite layer is a highly desirable prerequisite for efficient planar perovskite solar cells. However, the rapid reaction between CH3NH3I methylammonium iodide (MAI) and PbI2 often leads to an inconsistent CH3NH3PbI3 crystal nucleation and growth rate along the film depth during the two-step sequential deposition process. Herein, a facile solvent additive strategy is reported to retard the crystallization kinetics of perovskite formation and accelerate the MAI diffusion across the PbI2 layer. It was found that the ultrasmooth perovskite thin film with narrow crystallite size variation can be achieved by introducing favorable solvent additives into the MAI solution. The effects of dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, γ-butyrolactone, chlorobenzene, and diethyl ether additives on the morphological properties and cross-sectional crystallite size distribution were investigated using atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the light absorption and band structure of the as-prepared CH3NH3PbI3 films were investigated and correlated with the photovoltaic performance of the equivalent solar cell devices. Details of perovskite nucleation and crystal growth processes are presented, which opens new avenues for the fabrication of more efficient planar solar cell devices with these ultrasmooth perovskite layers.
Hysteresis-free, stable and efficient perovskite solar cells achieved by vacuum-treated thermal annealing of CH3NH3PbI3

Abstract:The lead halide-based perovskite solar cells have emerged as a promising candidate in photovoltaic applications. However, the precise control over the morphologiy of the perovskite films (minimizing pore formation) and enhanced stability and reproducibility of the devices remain challenging, even though both will be necessary for further advancements. Here we introduce vacuum-assisted thermal annealing as a means of controlling the composition and morphology of the CH3NH3PbI3 films formed from PbCl2 and CH3NH3I as precursors. We identify the critical role that the CH3NH3Cl generated as a byproduct during the pervoskite synthesis plays for the photovoltaic performance of the perovskite film. Removing this byproduct through vacuum-assisted thermal annealing we succeeded in producing pure, pore-free planar CH3NH3PbI3 films showing high conversion efficiency (PCE) reaching 14.5%). Removal of CH3NH3Cl strongly attenuate the photocurrent hysteresis.

Abstract:Physical vacuum deposition (PVD) of organo-metal halide thin film has advantages of uniform and large scale deposition for emerging perovskite solar cell technology. Evaporation of organic halides such as CH3NH3I (MAI) is crucial for obtaining phase pure perovskite thin films. However, controlling the evaporation rate of MAI remains difficult owing to its "vapor-gas" like nature upon sublimation. Here we report, highly crystalline CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI(3)) films with micrometer grains can be prepared by gradually controlling the MAI vapor pressure rather than evaporation rate in co-evaporation method. When integrating an optimal film into a planar heterojunction solar cell, the best device achieved a power conversion efficiency of 15.74% by deploying TiO2 as an electron transport layer. This strategy alleviates the strict calibration of MAI evaporation rate and led to obtain phase pure MAPbI(3) films for high performance solar cells.

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency of organometallic perovskite-based solar cells has skyrocketed in recent years. Intensive efforts have been made to prepare high-quality perovskite films tailored to various device configurations. Planar heterojunction devices have achieved record efficiencies; however, the preparation of perovskite films for planar junction devices requires the use of expensive vacuum facilities and/or the fine control of experimental conditions. Here, we demonstrate a facile preparation of perovskite films using solid-state chemistry. Solid-state precursor thin films of CH3NH3I and PbI2 are brought into contact with each other and allowed to react via thermally accelerated diffusion. The resulting perovskite film displays good optical absorption and a smooth morphology. Solar cells based on these films show an average efficiency of 8.7% and a maximum efficiency of 10%. The solid-state synthesis of organometallic perovskite can also be carried out on flexible plastic substrates. Using this method on a PET/ITO substrate produces devices with an efficiency of 3.2%. Unlike existing synthetic methods for organometallic perovskite films, the solid-state reaction method does not require the use of orthogonal solvents or careful adjustment of reaction conditions, and thus shows good potential for mass production in the future.

Abstract:As the light absorption layer, a CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite film with a fully and homogeneously covered flat surface is crucially important for perovskite photovoltaic devices. Herein, the sequential method is improved by introducing a spray-assisted solution process (SSP) instead of the commonly used dipping process in CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite film deposition. The morphology analysis for PbI2 films found that the airflow of the spray pre-wetting process provides a driving force for accelerating the dissolution and deep infiltration, which is helpful to form a mesoporous PbI2 scaffold. So the 2-propanol (IPA) prewetting has advantages to complete the reaction of PbI2 and CH3NH3I through the diffusion channel in the grain boundary and on the surface of the PbI2 film. Furthermore, the grain size and surface coverage of the film can be controlled effectively by a facile IPA pre-wetting process in the SSP. Meanwhile, the influence of the annealing process on the crystallization, chemical composition, microstructures and carrier transport properties of the perovskite films were investigated. Our results showed that an optimum annealing temperature and time can reduce crystal defects in the film and weaken the hysteresis phenomenon of the perovskite solar cell. Nonstoichiometric acid-base reaction as reliable synthetic route to highly stable CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite film

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells have received worldwide interests due to swiftly improved efficiency but the poor stability of the perovskite component hampers the device fabrication under normal condition. Herein, we develop a reliable nonstoichiometric acid-base reaction route to stable perovskite films by intermediate chemistry and technology. Perovskite thin-film prepared by nonstoichiometric acid-base reaction route is stable for two months with negligible PbI2-impurity under ∼65% humidity, whereas other perovskites prepared by traditional methods degrade distinctly after 2 weeks. Route optimization involves the reaction of PbI2 with excess HI to generate HPbI3, which subsequently undergoes reaction with excess CH3NH2 to deliver CH3NH3PbI3 thin films. High quality of intermediate HPbI3 and CH3NH2 abundance are two important factors to stable CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite. Excess volatile acid/base not only affords full conversion in nonstoichiometric acid-base reaction route but also permits its facile removal for stoichiometric purification, resulting in average efficiency of 16.1% in forward/reverse scans.

Choy and co-workers develop a new approach for forming PbI2 nanostructures together with strategically high CH3NH3I concentrations to rapidly form high quality (smooth and PbI2 residue-free) CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite films at room temperature. By employing this approach, high efficiency and stable planar-heterojunction perovskite solar cells can be fabricated.

Abstract:A two-step ultrasonic spray method has been developed to fabricate centimeter-scale uniform and smooth perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 films for efficient and large-area solar cells. Aside from the advantages in larger area and higher smoothness, the perovskite films deposited by this method showed better crystallinity, lower non-radiative recombination and more efficient interfacial charge extraction properties. Through systematical optimizations, an efficient mesoscopic solar cell was finally achieved with efficiency of 16.03%. Furthermore, large-area (1×1cm2) cell was also fabricated, giving an efficiency of 13.09%. This work demonstrates that the two-step spray method can be a promising alternative to deposit high-quality and large-area perovskite absorbers to afford high cell performance.
