Abstract:Magnetic Weyl semimetals with broken time-reversal symmetry are expected to generate strong intrinsic anomalous Hall effects, due to their large Berry curvature. Here, we report a magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate, Co3Sn2S2, with a quasi-two-dimensional crystal structure consisting of stacked Kagomé lattices. This lattice provides an excellent platform for hosting exotic topological quantum states. We observe a negative magnetoresistance that is consistent with the chiral anomaly expected from the presence of Weyl nodes close to the Fermi level. The anomalous Hall conductivity is robust against both increased temperature and charge conductivity, which corroborates the intrinsic Berry-curvature mechanism in momentum space. Owing to the low carrier density in this material and the significantly enhanced Berry curvature from its band structure, the anomalous Hall conductivity and the anomalous Hall angle simultaneously reach 1130 Ω-1 cm-1 and 20%, respectively, an order of magnitude larger than typical magnetic systems. Combining the Kagomé-lattice structure and the out-of-plane ferromagnetic order of Co3Sn2S2, we expect that this material is an excellent candidate for observation of the quantum anomalous Hall state in the two-dimensional limit.

Abstract:Weyl semimetals provide the realization of Weyl fermions in solid-state physics. Among all the physical phenomena that are enabled by Weyl semimetals, the chiral anomaly is the most unusual one. Here, we report signatures of the chiral anomaly in the magneto-transport measurements on the first Weyl semimetal TaAs. We show negative magnetoresistance under parallel electric and magnetic fields, that is, unlike most metals whose resistivity increases under an external magnetic field, we observe that our high mobility TaAs samples become more conductive as a magnetic field is applied along the direction of the current for certain ranges of the field strength. We present systematically detailed data and careful analyses, which allow us to exclude other possible origins of the observed negative magnetoresistance. Our transport data, corroborated by photoemission measurements, first-principles calculations and theoretical analyses, collectively demonstrate signatures of the Weyl fermion chiral anomaly in the magneto-transport of TaAs.

Abstract:Magnetic Weyl semimetals (WSMs) with time reversal symmetry breaking exhibit Weyl nodes that act as monopoles of Berry curvature and are thus expected to generate a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE). However, in most magnetic WSMs, the Weyl nodes are located far from the Fermi energy, making it difficult to observe the Weyl-node dominated intrinsic AHE in experiments. Here we report a novel half-metallic magnetic WSM in the Kagome-lattice Shandite compound Co3Sn2S2. The Weyl nodes, linked by gapped nodal rings, are crucially located just 60 meV above the Fermi energy. Owing to both the significantly enhanced Berry curvature arising from the Weyl bands and the low charge conductivity, the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) and anomalous Hall angle (AHA) experimentally reach up to 1130 ohms-1 cm-1 and 20% respectively, which allows the material to simultaneously host a large AHC and giant AHA. Interpreting WSMs as coupled quantum AHE layers, the present results suggest that thin films of this quasi-two-dimensional WSM present a promising candidate for the bulk-insulating quantum AHE. Co3Sn2S2 as an easy-to-grow magnetic WSM thus represents an ideal platform to study Weyl physics. Our findings further suggest half-metallic Weyl semimetals - combining a topological Weyl phase for one spin channel with a band gap for the other - as a new paradigm for materials with a large Berry-in-origin AHE.

Abstract:The physical realization of Chern insulators is of fundamental and practical interest, as they are predicted to host the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and topologically protected chiral edge states which can carry dissipationless current. Current realizations of the QAH state often require complex heterostructures and sub-Kelvin temperatures, making the discovery of intrinsic, high temperature QAH systems of significant interest. In this work we show that time-reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetals, being essentially stacks of Chern insulators with inter-layer coupling, may provide a new platform for the higher temperature realization of robust chiral edge states. We present combined scanning tunneling spectroscopy and theoretical investigations of the magnetic Weyl semimetal, Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 . Using modeling and numerical simulations we find that depending on the strength of the interlayer coupling, chiral edge states can be localized on partially exposed kagome planes on the surfaces of a Weyl semimetal. Correspondingly, our d I /d V maps on the kagome Co 3 Sn terraces show topological states confined to the edges which display linear dispersion. This work provides a new paradigm for realizing chiral edge modes and provides a pathway for the realization of higher temperature QAH effect in magnetic Weyl systems in the two-dimensional limit.

Abstract:The experimental discovery of Weyl semimetals offers unprecedented opportunities to study Weyl physics in condensed matters. Unique electromagnetic response of Weyl semimetals such as chiral magnetic effect has been observed and presented by the axial θ E · B term in electromagnetic Lagrangian ( E and B are the electric and magnetic field, respectively). But till now, the experimental progress in this direction in Weyl semimetals is restricted to the DC regime. Here we report experimental access to the dynamic regime in Weyl semimetal NbAs by combining the internal deformation potential of coupled phonons with applied static magnetic field. While the dynamic E · B field is realized, it produces an anomalous phonon activity with a characteristic angle-dependence. Our results provide an effective approach to achieve the dynamic regime beyond the widely-investigated DC limit which enables the coupling between the Weyl fermions and the electromagnetic wave for further study of novel light-matter interactions in Weyl semimetals.
Experimental Observation of Anisotropic Adler-Bell-Jackiw Anomaly in Type-Ii Weyl Semimetal WTe$_2$ Crystals

Abstract:Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomaly, being a spectacular phenomenon in quantum field theory, was recently observed in several Weyl semimetals. The latest progress is the theoretical extension of Weyl semimetal to the type-II Weyl semimetal. The electron dispersion in type-II Weyl semimetal disrupts the honored Lorentz invariance, which theoretically hosts anisotropic transport properties. Here we observe the significant anisotropic ABJ anomaly in the Fermi-level delicately adjusted WTe$_2$ crystals. Quantitatively, $C_w$, a coefficient representing intensity of ABJ anomaly, in a-axis and b-axis of WTe$_2$ are 0.05066 and 0.03018 T$^{-2}$ at 2 K, respectively. In addition, temperature-sensitive ABJ anomaly observed in our experiment maybe an indicator of topological phase transition from type-II Weyl semimetal to trivial semimetal, which is supported by first-principles calculation using experimentally determined lattice parameters at different temperatures as the input information. Our work suggests that electron-doped WTe$_2$ is an ideal playground to explore the novel properties in type-II Weyl semimetals.

Abstract:Quantum anomalies are the breaking of a classical symmetry by quantum fluctuations. They dictate how physical systems of diverse nature, ranging from fundamental particles to crystalline materials, respond topologically to external perturbations, insensitive to local details. The anomaly paradigm was triggered by the discovery of the chiral anomaly that contributes to the decay of pions into photons and influences the motion of superfluid vortices in $^3$He-A. In the solid state, it also fundamentally affects the properties of topological Weyl and Dirac semimetals, recently realized experimentally in TaAs, Na$_3$Bi, Cd$_3$As$_2$, and ZrTe$_{5}$. In this work we propose that the most identifying consequence of the chiral anomaly, the charge density imbalance between fermions of different chirality induced by non-orthogonal electric and magnetic fields, can be directly observed in these materials with the existing technology of photoemission spectroscopy. With angle resolution, the chiral anomaly is identified by a characteristic note-shaped pattern of the emission spectra, originating from the imbalanced occupation of the bulk states and a previously unreported momentum dependent energy shift of the surface state Fermi arcs. We further demonstrate that the chiral anomaly likewise leaves an imprint in angle averaged emission spectra, facilitating its experimental detection. Thereby, our work provides essential theoretical input to foster the direct visualization of the chiral anomaly in condensed matter.

Abstract:The asymmetric electron dispersion in type-II Weyl semimetal theoretically hosts anisotropic transport properties. Here, we observe the significant anisotropic Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomaly in the Fermi-level delicately adjusted WTe_{1.98} crystals. Quantitatively, C_{W}, a coefficient representing the intensity of the ABJ anomaly along the a and b axis of WTe_{1.98} are 0.030 and 0.051 T^{-2} at 2 K, respectively. We found that the temperature-sensitive ABJ anomaly is attributed to a topological phase transition from a type-II Weyl semimetal to a trivial semimetal, which is verified by a first-principles calculation using experimentally determined lattice parameters at different temperatures. Theoretical electrical transport study reveals that the observation of an anisotropic ABJ along both the a and b axes in WTe_{1.98} is attributed to electrical transport in the quasiclassical regime. Our work may suggest that electron-doped WTe_{2} is an ideal playground to explore the novel properties in type-II Weyl semimetals.

Abstract:Chiral anomaly, a non-conservation of chiral charge pumped by the topological nontrivial gauge fields, has been predicted to exist in Weyl semimetals. However, until now, the experimental signature of this effect exclusively relies on the observation of negative longitudinal magnetoresistance at low temperatures. Here, we report the field-modulated chiral charge pumping process and valley diffusion in Cd3As2. Apart from the conventional negative magnetoresistance, we observe an unusual nonlocal response with negative field dependence up to room temperature, originating from the diffusion of valley polarization. Furthermore, a large magneto-optic Kerr effect generated by parallel electric and magnetic fields is detected. These new experimental approaches provide a quantitative analysis of the chiral anomaly phenomenon which was inaccessible previously. The ability to manipulate the valley polarization in topological semimetal at room temperature opens up a route towards understanding its fundamental properties and utilizing the chiral fermions.

Abstract:Discovery of Weyl semimetals has revived interest in Weyl fermions which has not been observed in high energy experiments. It now becomes possible to study, in solids, their exotic properties. Extensive photoemission spectroscopy and electrical resistivity experiments have been carried out. However, many other properties remain unexplored. Here we show the thermoelectric signature of the chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions in Cd3As2 under a magnetic field. We observe a strong quadratic suppression of the thermopower when the magnetic field is parallel to the temperature gradient. The quadratic coefficient is nearly twice of that for the electrical conductivity. The thermopower reverses its sign in high fields. We show that all these intriguing observations can be understood in terms of the chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions. Our results reveal the anomalous thermoelectric property of Weyl fermions and provide insight into the chiral anomaly.

Abstract:We study the influence of the chiral anomaly of a time-reversal broken Weyl semimetal on Andreev reflection in a superconductor junction. It is found that the chiral chemical potential can lead to the switching between the retro Andreev reflection (RAR) and specular Andreev reflection (SAR), which appears in both intraband and interband electron-hole conversion, violating the common rule that the intraband conversion is the RAR while the interband one is the SAR. This switching effect is dependent on the tilt of the Weyl cones and the direction of the line connecting the two Weyl points. In addition, a perfect Andreev reflection is found at the incident angle, not perpendicular to the junction interface. We also discuss the zero-bias differential conductance which provides an observable signature of the switching effect, especially for the switching between RAR and SAR caused by band transition. These findings are useful in better understanding the Andreev reflection types and detecting the chiral anomaly.

Abstract:In condensed matter, the chiral anomaly describes the conversion of left-moving Dirac–Weyl fermions to right-moving ones in parallel electric and magnetic fields. The resulting axial current leads to an unusual negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (LMR). Five years ago, the discovery of Dirac and Weyl semimetals led to many experiments investigating this phenomenon. In this Review, we critically assess LMR experiments in the Dirac–Weyl semimetals Na3Bi, GdPtBi, ZrTe5, Cd3As2 and TaAs, which have shown signatures of the chiral anomaly, and discuss possible current-jetting artefacts. The focus is on Dirac and Weyl nodes that are rigorously symmetry protected. Other experiments, such as non-local transport, thermopower, thermal conductivity and optical pump–probe response, are also reviewed. Looking ahead, we anticipate what can be gleaned from improved LMR experiments and new experiments on the thermal conductivity and optical response. An expanded purview of the chiral anomaly is provided in the Supplementary Information. The chiral anomaly, originally studied in pion decay, leads to related effects in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. This Review surveys recent experiments that address the appearance of the anomaly in parallel electric and magnetic fields.

Abstract:We predict a nonlinear Hall effect in certain Weyl semimetals with broken inversion symmetry. When the energy dispersions about pairs of Weyl nodes are skewed—the Weyl cones are “tilted”—the concerted actions of the anomalous velocity and the chiral anomaly give rise to the nonlinear Hall effect. This Hall conductivity is linear in both electric and magnetic fields and depends critically on the tilting of the Weyl cones. We also show that this effect does not rely on a finite Berry curvature dipole, in contrast with the intrinsic quantum nonlinear Hall effect that was recently observed in type-II Weyl semimetals.

Abstract:We propose a new mechanism to generate the Casimir-Lifshitz torque between Weyl semimetals arising from the chiral anomaly. For short distances ranging from a nanometer to a few tens of nanometers, chiral anomaly is manifested via a Casimir-Lifshitz torque ∼sin(θ) with θ being the twisting angle. As the distance between Weyl semimetals increases from a submicrometer to a few micrometers, chiral-anomaly-driven Casimir-Lifshitz torque between Weyl semimetals is remarkably large, which is comparable with that of conventional birefringent materials.

Abstract:Recently, Weyl semimetals have been experimentally discovered in both inversion-symmetry-breaking and time-reversal-symmetry-breaking crystals. The non-trivial topology in Weyl semimetals can manifest itself with exotic phenomena which have been extensively investigated by photoemission and transport measurements. Despite the numerous experimental efforts on Fermi arcs and chiral anomaly, the existence of unconventional zeroth Landau levels, as a unique hallmark of Weyl fermions which is highly related to chiral anomaly, remains elusive owing to the stringent experimental requirements. Here, we report the magneto-optical study of Landau quantization in Weyl semimetal NbAs. High magnetic fields drive the system towards the quantum limit which leads to the observation of zeroth chiral Landau levels in two inequivalent Weyl nodes. As compared to other Landau levels, the zeroth chiral Landau level exhibits a distinct linear dispersion in z momentum direction and allows the optical transitions without the limitation of zero z momentum or square root of magnetic field evolution. The magnetic field dependence of the zeroth Landau levels further verifies the predicted particle-hole asymmetry of the Weyl cones. Meanwhile, the optical transitions from the normal Landau levels exhibit the coexistence of multiple carriers including an unexpected massive Dirac fermion, pointing to a more complex topological nature in inversion-symmetry-breaking Weyl semimetals. Our results provide insights into the Landau quantization of Weyl fermions and demonstrate an effective tool for studying complex topological systems.

Abstract:The absence of inversion symmetry in non-centrosymmetric materials has a fundamental role in the emergence of a vast number of fascinating phenomena, like ferroelectricity, second harmonic generation, and Weyl fermions. The removal of time-reversal symmetry in such systems further extends the variety of observable magneto-electric and topological effects. Here we report the striking topological properties in the non-centrosymmetric spin-orbit magnet PrAlGe by combining spectroscopy and transport measurements. By photoemission spectroscopy below the Curie temperature, we observe topological Fermi arcs that correspond to projected topological charges of 1 in the surface Brillouin zone. In the bulk, we observe the linear energy-dispersion of the Weyl fermions. We further observe a large anomalous Hall response in our magneto-transport measurements, which is understood to arise from diverging bulk Berry curvature fields associated with the Weyl band structure. Abstract:Chiral magnetic effect is a quantum phenomenon that is breaking of chiral symmetry of relativistic Weyl fermions by quantum fluctuation under paralleled electric field E and magnetic field B. Intuitively, Weyl fermions with different chirality, under stimulus of paralleled E and B, will have different chemical potential that gives rise to an extra current, whose role likes a chiral battery in solids. However, up to now, the experimental evidence for chiral magnetic effect is the negative longitudinal magnetoresistance rather than a chiral electric source. Here, totally different from previous reports, we observed the giant chiral magnetic effect evidenced by: 'negative' resistivity and corresponding voltage-current curves lying the second-fourth quadrant in type-II Weyl semimetal WP$_{2+\delta}$ under following conditions: the misaligned angle between E and B is smaller than 20$^\circ$, temperature <30 K and externally applied E<50 mA. Phenomenologically, based on macroscopic Chern-Simon-Maxwell equation, the giant chiral magnetic effect observed in WP$_{2+\delta}$ is attributed to two-order higher coherent time of chiral Weyl-fermion quantum state over Drude transport relaxation-time. This work demonstrates the giant chiral-magnetic/chiral-battery effect in Weyl semimetals.

Abstract:Weyl semimetals host a variety of exotic effects that have no counterpart in conventional materials, such as the chiral anomaly and magnetic monopole in momentum space. These effects give rise to unusual transport properties, including a negative magnetoresistance and a planar Hall effect, etc. Here, we report a new type of Hall and magnetoresistance effect in a magnetic Weyl semimetal. Unlike antisymmetric (with respect to either magnetic field or magnetization) Hall and symmetric magnetoresistance in conventional materials, the discovered magnetoresistance and Hall effect are antisymmetric in both magnetic field and magnetization. We show that the Berry curvature, the tilt of the Weyl node, and the chiral anomaly synergically produce these phenomena. Our results reveal a unique property of Weyl semimetals with broken time reversal symmetry.

Abstract:Chiral magnetic effect is a quantum phenomenon that is breaking of chiral symmetry of relativistic Weyl fermions by quantum fluctuation under paralleled electric field E and magnetic field B. Intuitively, Weyl fermions with different chirality, under stimulus of paralleled E and B, will have different chemical potential that gives rise to an extra current, whose role likes a chiral battery in solids. However, up to now, the experimental evidence for chiral magnetic effect is the negative longitudinal magnetoresistance rather than a chiral electric source. Optical Signatures of the Chiral Anomaly in Mirror-Symmetric Weyl Semimetals

Abstract:The chiral anomaly is a phenomenon characteristic of Weyl fermions, which has condensed matter realizations in Weyl semimetals. Efforts to observe smoking gun signatures of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals have mostly focused on a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance in electronic transport. Unfortunately, disentangling the chiral anomaly contribution in transport or optical measurements has proven non-trivial. Recent works have proposed an alternative approach of probing pseudoscalar phonon dynamics for signatures of the chiral anomaly in non-mirror-symmetric crystals. Here, we show that such phonon signatures can be extended to scalar phonon modes and mirror-symmetric crystals, broadening the pool of candidate materials. We show that the presence of the background magnetic field can break mirror symmetry strongly enough to yield observable signatures of the chiral anomaly even in mirror-symmetric materials. Specifically for mirror-symmetric Weyl semimetals such as TaAs and NbAs, including the Zeeman interaction at $B \approx 10$T, we predict an IR reflectivity peak will develop with an $\mathbf{E}_\text{IR}\cdot\mathbf{B}$ dependence.
