Abstract:LINERs are a very common form of AGN, and it is natural in the context of this meeting to ask whether they show evidence of outflows of the type seen in Seyferts and QSOs. Ultraviolet spectroscopy suitable for measuring resonance line absorption is available for only a small number of LINERs. These data indicate that a significant fraction of LINERs may not be accretion-powered systems at all, but instead are small-scale starburst phenomena. Low-ionization line absorption is seen in the majority of observed LINERs, including both AGN-like and starburst-like systems. In most if not all of these objects, however, the absorption may arise from the normal interstellar medium of the host galaxy, rather than in material residing near or outflowing from the central source of activity. The lack of strong outflow signatures in accretion-powered LINERs, as compared with more powerful systems, may reflect their low luminosities, or differences in the underlying accretion structure.
