Using Historical Experiences for Reference and Promoting Western Development-- Mountainous Resource Exploitation in Qing Dynasty of Southern Shanxi

Abstract:Immigration leads to the population growth of southern Shanxi in late Qing Dynasty. The immigrants cultivated a large amount of land. They grew corns and potatoes. Hydraulic construction was strengthened. Economic crops such as tea, cotton, tobacco and medical herbs were widely grown. Steel factories, sawmill, edible fungus factories appeared. The economy of southern Shanxi experienced a prosperous period. But the problems in the economic cultivation of southern Shanxi are obviously blindness and excessiveness in the exploitation process. These problems lead to the decrease of forestry, the soil flow, more droughts and floods, lesser development potential stagnation. From the perspective of ecological protection, social and economic efficiency, the author points out some proposals for our contemporary economic construction.
