Abstract:Lithium oxygen batteries (LOBs) have attracted increasing interest because of their superior theoretical specific energy. However, the stability of lithium metal anode is one of the obstacles limiting their practical applications. Here, we introduce an artificial Li3PO4 solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film to protect the lithium anode in LOB with LiI/LiNO3/DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) electrolyte. The Li3PO4-protected Li anode exhibits excellent electrochemical stability during the Li stripping/plating process and leads to a relatively uniform and featureless surface in LOB after cycling. Our research demonstrates that superior electrochemical performance can be achieved in the Li O-2 battery with the synergistic combination of the DMSO-based electrolyte, the LiI redox mediator, and the Li(3)PO(4)protected Li anode. The LOB with a Li3PO4-protected Li anode exhibits a prolonged cycling life span of 152 cycles with a fixed capacity of 1000 mA h at 2 A The results in this work provide knowledge for the development of a robust strategy for protecting the Li anode in the applications of Li-O-2 batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal battery has great development potential because of its lowest electrochemical potential and highest theoretical capacity.However,the uneven deposition of Li+flux in the process of deposition and stripping induces the vigorous growth of lithium dendrites,which results in severely battery performance degradation and serious safety hazards.Here,the tetragonal BaTiO3 polarized by high voltage corona was used to build an artificial protective layer with uniform positive polarization direction,which enables uniform Li+flux.In contrast to traditional strategies of using protective layer,which can guide the uniform deposition of lithium metal.The ferroelectric protective layer can accurately anchor the Li+and achieve bottom deposition of lithium due to the automatic adjustment of the electric field.Simultaneously,the huge volume changes caused by Li+migration change of the lithium metal anode during charging and discharging is functioned to excite the piezoelectric effect of the protective layer,and achieve seamless dynamic tuning of lithium deposition/stripping.This dynamic effect can accurately anchor and capture Li+.Finally,the layer-modified Li anode enables reversible Li plating/stripping over 1500 h at 1 mA cm-2 and 50 ℃ in symmetric cells.In addition,the assembled Li-S full cell exhibits over 300 cycles with N/P ≈ 1.35.This work provides a new perspective on the uniform Li+flux at the Li-anode interface of the artificial protective layer.

Abstract:AbstractLithium (Li) metal is a promising anode for high-performance secondary lithium batteries with high energy density due to its highest theoretical specific capacity and lowest electrochemical potential among anode materials. However, the dendritic growth and detrimental reactions with electrolyte during Li plating raise safety concerns and lead to premature failure. Herein, we report that a homogeneous nanocomposite protective layer, prepared by uniformly dispersing AlPO4 nanoparticles into the vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene matrix, can effectively prevent dendrite growth and lead to superior cycling performance due to synergistic influence of homogeneous Li plating and electronic insulation of polymeric layer. The results reveal that the protected Li anode is able to sustain repeated Li plating/stripping for > 750 cycles under a high current density of 3 mA cm−2 and a renders a practical specific capacity of 2 mAh cm−2. Moreover, full-cell Li-ion battery is constructed by using LiFePO4 and protected Li as a cathode and anode, respectively, rendering a stable capacity after 400 charge/discharge cycles. The current work presents a promising approach to stabilize Li metal anodes for next-generation Li secondary batteries.

Abstract:A Li3N protection layer is fabricated on the surface of a Li anode by an in situ method to suppress the shuttle effect on the basis of anode protection. The discharge capacity is retained at 773 mA h g(-1) after 500 cycles with an average coulombic efficiency of 92.3% in the electrolyte without LiNO3, while the sulfur loading of the simple sulfur cathode was 2.5-3 mg cm(-2).

Abstract:Lithium metal is the "holy grail" of anodes, capable of unlocking the full potential of cathodes in next‐generation batteries. However, the use of pure lithium anodes faces several challenges in terms of safety, cycle life, and rate capability. Herein, a solution‐processable conjugated microporous thermosetting polymer (CMP) is developed. The CMP can be further converted into a large‐scale membrane with nanofluidic channels (5–6 Å). These channels can serve as facile and selective Li‐ion diffusion pathways on the surfaces of lithium anodes, thereby ensuring stable lithium stripping/plating even at high areal current densities. CMP‐modified lithium anodes (CMP‐Li) exhibit cycle stability of 2550 h at an areal current density of 20 mA cm−2. Furthermore, CMP is readily amenable to solution‐processing and spray coating, rendering it highly applicable to continuous roll‐to‐roll lithium metal treatment processes. Pouch cells with CMP‐Li as the anode and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) as the cathode exhibits a stable energy density of 400 Wh kg−1.

Abstract:A mixed conductive coating layer composed of lithium ion conductive ceramic powder, carbon and binder was introduced on the surface of a sulfur electrode. This coating layer is designed to suppress the migration of lithium polysulfides from the sulfur electrode, and improve the cycling capacity of a lithium sulfur battery. The protected sulfur cathode with a mixed conductive coating layer delivered an initial specific capacity of 1236 mAh g−1 at 0.5C and maintained a capacity of 842 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles. In particular, a soft package battery with protected cathode exhibits improved cycling capacity and excellent rate performance.
In situ Construction of Robust Biphasic Surface Layers on Lithium Metal for Lithium-Sulfide Batteries with Long Cycle Life

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have potential in high energy density battery systems. However, intermediates of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) can easily shuttle to the Li anode and react with Li metal to deplete the active materials and cause rapid failure of the battery. A facile solution pretreatment method for Li anodes involving a solution of metal fluorides/dimethylsulfoxide was developed to construct robust biphasic surface layers (BSLs) in situ. The BSLs consist of lithiophilic alloy (Lix M) and LiF phases on Li metal, which inhibit the shuttle effect and increase the cycle life of Li-S batteries. The BSLs allow Li+ transport and they inhibit dendrite growth and shield the Li anodes from corrosive reaction with LiPSs. Li-S batteries containing BSLs-Li anodes demonstrate excellent cycling over 1000 cycles at 1 C and simultaneously maintain a high coulombic efficiency of 98.2 %. Based on our experimental and theoretical results, we propose a strategy for inhibition of the shuttle effect that produces high stability Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Due to the high theoretical specific capacity and energy density, lithium sulfur battery is regarded as a potential candidate for next generation energy storage devices. However, severe corrosion reaction between polysulfides and lithium anode causes the poor cycling stability and low coulombic efficiency. Herein, we demonstrate the construction of protective layer on lithium anodes by a spontaneous and rapid reaction between Li metal and the mixture solution of P2S5 and S in THF. The main constituents of the protective layer are confirmed as a sulfide lithium ion solid electrolyte Li3PS4 and its derivatives, which effectively stabilize the interphase of lithium anode and suppress the shuttle effect in the Li-S batteries, enabling the greatly enhanced cycling stability and Coulombic efficiency. With modification of lithium anode, the lithium sulfur batteries exhibit a specific capacity of 840mAhg−1 after 200 cycles at 0.3C with average Coulombic efficiency of 90.1% without LiNO3 additives in the electrolyte. Moreover, by applying Li3PS4 modified Li anode, Li-S pouch cells with sulfur loading of 3.8–4.2mgcm−2 deliver good cycling performance of 803mAhg−1 with average Coulombic efficiency of 90% after 20 cycles. Hence, introducing sulfide solid electrolyte as protective layer of Li anode provides a new strategy for the improvement of lithium sulfur batteries.
Constructing Self-Protected Li and Non-Li Candidates for Advanced Lithium Ion and Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) and Li7La3Zr2O12-poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) films were introduced to both Li and non-Li anodes. Via the recombination of poly(vinylidene fluoride-cohexafluoropropylene)-Li7La3Zr2O12, the ionic conductivity of the anodes has been greatly improved, and the deposition/plating barrier has been decreased. On the one hand, the thin film introduced upon lithium metal ensures cyclic stability in both symmetrical cells and full cells. The Li metal with Li7La3Zr2O12-poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) films behaved stably over 500 h with little increase in polarization. On the other hand, the modification upon Cu foil provided a long cycle life over 300 cycles in Li Cu cells. When the poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)-Li7La3Zr2O12@Cu foil (non-Li anode) failed, a type of self protected mechanism was activated, ensuring better mechanical properties and safety.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is considered an ideal anode for next-generation high energy Li metal batteries (LMBs) due to its high theoretical specific capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, stable cycling of LMBs has long been restrained by the extremely unstable interfaces between the Li metal anode and liquid electrolyte. Here, we found that low-cost polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer can be applied as an effective protection layer for Li metal anodes in both ether- and carbonate-based electrolytes. The PVA protection layer will participate in and facilitate formation of a superior PVA-modified solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on Li metal, leading to uniform deposition of Li and alleviated consumption of electrolyte. Li parallel to Cu half-cells with the PVA protection layers show dendrite-free Li deposition and greatly extended stable cycling with high Coulombic efficiency (CE) (e.g. average CE of 98.3% for over 630 cycles). Li-Sulfur, Li-LiFePO4 and Li-LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 full-cells using the PVA-protected Li metal anodes also show significantly improved electrochemical performance with better capacity retention and higher CE, even under lean electrolyte (7.5 mu L mAh(-1)) condition.

Abstract:The lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery is an appealing choice for the next-generation high-energy-density energy storage systems. However, side reactions between lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and Li metal anode cause the growth of Li dendrites, loss of active materials, and safety issues, which severely hinders the practical application of Li–S batteries. Constructing a protection layer on the surface of Li anode is an effective strategy to shield LiPSs and regulate lithium uniform deposition in Li–S batteries. Herein, we design and fabricate a lithiated Nafion protective layer to alleviate the side reactions between LiPSs and the Li anode and guide uniform deposition of Li, in which, their mechanism is investigated. The optimal protective layer effectively protects the Li anode from the detrimental side reactions, which boosts the stability of the Li anode. Li–Li and Li-stainless steel cells with 4 M [S] Li2S8 electrolyte can last for more than 400 cycles and 100 cycles at current density of 1 mA cm−2. A Li–S full cell also exhibits a high reversible capacity of 791.5 mA h g−1 after 250 cycles at 0.5 C. This work reveals the vital role of the artificial protective layer in enhancing the stability of the Li anode in Li–S batteries.

Abstract:The Li–S battery is considered as the next-generation energy storage solution largely because of its high energy density. However, the lithium metal anode has suffered from the "shuttle effect" of soluble polysulfide species and the formation of dendrites that cause quick performance decay and safety issues. Here, a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane that contains a hierarchical porous structure was introduced as a protection layer to insulate the lithium anode from polysulfide shuttling and dendrite formation. The PVDF protected Li–S battery showed a capacity of around 850 mAh g–1 and a Coulombic efficiency of 98% over 200 cycles at 0.5 C. Both performances are significantly improved from the normal Li–S batteries. The PVDF membrane is stable, easy to coat, and scalable, which offers a convenient, affordable, yet effective strategy for achieving commercialization of high energy density and safe Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal is considered as an ideal substitute to low‐capacity carbon anodes for rechargeable lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) given its ultra‐high theoretical specific capacity of 3860 mAh g−1 and the lowest electrochemical potential. However, safety issues stem from the uncontrollable formation and growth of lithium dendrites, which severely plague the practical application of the Li anode. Here, a multi‐functional protection layer, prepared by a one‐step spin‐coating of CuCl2 N‐Methyl‐2‐Pyrrolidone (NMP) solution on a lithium metal surface is constructed. The as‐prepared protective layer has a variable porous morphology that consists of a conductive lithium‐copper alloy and electrochemically active CuCl, which proactively facilitates the homogeneous diffusion of Li‐ions, the elimination of random dendrite nuclei, and even distribution of charge at the Li anode surface, and subsequently the uniform deposition of Li+ ions. Under such a dynamic protection mechanism, the proposed CuCl2 modified Li electrode can stably cycle more than 1500 h at a current density of 1 mA cm−2 paired with lithium foil. Moreover, the assembled full battery achieves capacity retention of 85.6% even after 2000 cycles at a high rate of 5 C with a LiFePO4 cathode. This as‐proposed dynamic protection mechanism via the incorporation of the electrochemically active component could provide new guidance in the preparation of the safe and high‐performance lithium metal anodes.

A Mixed Lithium-Ion Conductive Li2S/Li2Se Protection Layer for Stable Lithium Metal Anode

Abstract:Constructing artificial solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the surface of Li metal is an effective approach to improve ionic conductivity of surface SEI and buffer Li dendrite growth of Li metal anode. However, constructing of homogenous ideal artificial SEI is still a great challenge. Here, a mixed lithium-ion conductive Li2S/Li2Se (denoted as LSSe) protection layer, fabricated by a facile and inexpensive gas-solid reaction, is employed to construct stable surface SEI with high ionic conductivity. The Li2S/Li2Se-protected Li metal (denoted as LSSe@Li) exhibits a stable dendrite-free cycling behavior over 900 h with a high lithium stripping/plating capacity of 3 mAh cm(-2) at 1.5 mA cm(-2) in the symmetrical cell. Compared to bare Li anode, full batteries paired with LiFePO4, sulfur/carbon, and LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathodes all present better battery cycling and rate performance when LSSe@Li anode is used. Moreover, Li2Se exhibits a lower lithium-ion migration energy barrier in comparison with Li2S which is proved by density functional theory calculation.
A compact inorganic layer for robust anode protection in lithium‐sulfur batteries

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are one of the most promising candidates for high energy density rechargeable batteries beyond current Li-ion batteries. However, severe corrosion of Li metal anode and low Coulombic efficiency (CE) induced by the unremitting shuttle of Li polysulfides immensely hinder the practical applications of Li-S batteries. Herein, a compact inorganic layer (CIL) formed by ex situ reactions between Li anode and ionic liquid emerged as an effective strategy to block Li polysulfides and suppress shuttle effect. A CE of 96.7% was achieved in Li-S batteries with CIL protected Li anode in contrast to 82.4% for bare Li anode while no lithium nitrate was employed. Furthermore, the corrosion of Li during cycling was effectively inhibited. While applied to working batteries, 80.6% of the initial capacity after 100cycles was retained in Li-S batteries with CIL-protected ultrathin (33 mu m) Li anode compared with 58.5% for bare Li anode, further demonstrating the potential of this strategy for practical applications. This study presents a feasible interfacial regulation strategy to protect Li anode with the presence of Li polysulfides and opens avenues for Li anode protection in Li-S batteries under practical conditions. image

Abstract:The advantages in high theoretical capacity and low electrochemical potential have made Li metal one of the most promising anode materials satisfying the surging requirement of high energy density for the next-generation batteries. However, safety issues caused by the Li dendrite growth during cycling have greatly thwarted its application. Herein, a hybrid artificial protective layer, constructed by the one-step method through chemical reactions between Li metal and 1H,1H,1H,2H-perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane, is demonstrated to guide Li deposition and protect lithium batteries from the destruction of Li dendrites. A synergistic effect of the inorganic and organic components in the protective layer significantly enhances the electrochemical performance of symmetric Li|Li and Li|LiFePO4 cells. This work provides a facile, simple, and scalable method to design a hybrid artificial protective layer for long-lifespan Li metal batteries.
Shielding polysulfides enabled by a biomimetic artificial protective layer in lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are widely considered to be next-generation storage technologies due to their high energy density, low cost and non-toxicity. However, the soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPS) migrating to the anode side inevitably causes side reactions with the Li anode, resulting in severe corrosion of the Li anode, loss of active materials, and rapid battery failure. Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective strategies to avoid LiPS exposure to Li anodes. Herein, a stable UiO-66-ClO4/PDMS (PDUO-Cl) biomimetic protective layer is rationally constructed by the drip coating method. The PDUO-Cl protective layer can effectively suppress the side reaction of Li metal with LiPSs/electrolyte and homogenize the Li+ flux, thus avoiding corrosion of the Li metal anode. As a result, the symmetric cell with the PDUO-Cl protective layer delivers a stable cycle performance greater than 1400 h under a current density of 0.5 mA cm−2. The Li–S batteries with a PDUO-Cl protective layer still show relatively better rate performance and cycling stability (69% after 100 cycles at 0.1 C). This work provides new insights into the design of protective strategies for Li anodes in Li–S batteries.

Abstract:The practical application of rechargeable lithium (Li) metal batteries has long been hindered by the unstable Li metal anode with problems like Li dendrite growth, low Coulombic efficiency (CE), and short cycle life. Here, we demonstrate a multifunctional sulfur-containing hybrid Li polysulfidophosphate and poly(2-chloroethyl acrylate) cross-linking film that can provide effective protection for Li metal anode. This film can facilitate Li metal anode generating a stable organic/inorganic hybrid solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer containing multiple components such as polymer-tethered organo(poly)sulfide, inorganic Li polysulfidophosphate, Li sulfides, and Li salts. Thanks to this hybrid robust SEI layer, dendrite-free Li deposition and stable cycling of Li metal anode can be achieved (e.g., CE > 98.7% over 950 cycles). We demonstrated this Li protection technique enables both the protected Li metal anode and Li-metalfree anode cycling with significantly improved CEs and stability in full cells using LiFePO4(similar to 2.4 mAh/cm(2)) cathode.
Lithium Zinc/Lithium Iodide Composite Modified Layer toward Highly Stable Lithium Metal Anodes

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are considered by most researchers as among the most prospective next-generation high energy density storage devices because of high theoretical capacity (3860 mAh g −1 ) and low reduction potential (–3.040 V compared to standard hydrogen electrode) of Li metal anode. Nevertheless, the uncontrollable dendrite growth of the Li metal anode during cycling hinders the commercial application of LMBs. Herein, we put forward a hybrid protective layer containing LiZn alloy and LiI at the surface of the Li metal anode. Thanks to the "lithiophilic" feature of LiZn alloy and LiI having a low surface Li + diffusion energy barrier, the constructed homogeneous hybrid protective layer can reduce the nucleation barrier and facilitate Li + rapid diffusion. As a consequence, Li metal anode exhibits a smooth plating/stripping morphology and can suppress the dendrite formation. Notably, the constructed ZI@Li || ZI@Li symmetrical cell realizes stable cycling for 470 h at 2 mA cm −2 and 2 mAh cm −2 , and LMBs matched with commercial LiFePO 4 cathode deliver greatly enhanced electrochemical properties. This hybrid protective layer provides a feasible strategy to realize even plating/stripping of Li metal, which would promote the high energy density LMBs for practical applications.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal has been considered as an effective anode material because of its high theoretical capacity, but the uncontrolled dendrite growth and the unstable electrode/electrolyte interface limit its practical application. In this work, proanthocyanidin (PA), a natural extracted biomass, was designed and developed as a coating material to guide homogeneous deposition and restrain side reaction for lithium metal batteries. The rigid benzene ring structure of PA can increase the mechanical strength to restrain dendrite growth on Li surface. Moreover, the spontaneous formation of organolithium (PA-Li) structure from the reaction of phenolic hydroxyl group with Li metal increase the ion transportation ability of PA layer and induce the uniform deposition of Li + ions to hinder the growth of Li dendrites, as well as prevent the direct contact of organic electrolyte with Li metal to suppress the interface side reaction. As a result, Li metal anode with PA-Li exhibits stable cycling properties for 2800 h at 2 mA cm -2 and 2 mAh cm -2 , better that of bare Li (200 h). Li-sulfur full battery with PA-Li can still achieve a capacity of 570 mAh g -1 after 300 cycles. This work provides an effective strategy for the construction a natural functional layer on Li surface to enhance the electrochemical performance, as well as the implementation of high-value utilization for natural biomass.
