Abstract:We proposed a cascaded amplitude equalizer used for high speed visible light communications (VLC) system. With the cascaded pre-equalization circuit, the -3dB bandwidth of VLC system can be extended from 17MHz to 366MHz using a commercially available phosphorescent white LED, a blue filter and a differential outputs PIN receiver. The data rate is 1.60Gbit/s exploiting 16QAM-OFDM with 400MHz modulation bandwidth over 1m free-space transmission under pre-forward error correction (pre-FEC) limit of 3.8 × 10(-3). To our knowledge, this is the highest data rate ever achieved by using a commercially available phosphorescent white LED in VLC system.

Abstract:We proposed two-staged linear software equalizer to be applied in high speed visible light communication system. Through the experimental demonstration, we implemented 2.32 Gbit/s VLC transmission based on a phosphorescent white LED with 450MHz bandwidth and 1m transmission distance. The other key technologies are adaptive bit and power loading OFDM, differential amplification PINs and maximum ratio combing algorithm. As far as we know, this is the highest data rate implemented based on a phosphorescent white LED in VLC system.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-speed white-light real-time VLC system based on phosphorescent white LED is proposed. This system employs 64QAM-Discrete Multi-Tone (64QAM-DMT) modulation format. The hardware architecture is built by utilizing field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The system performance is also investigated by the effect of attenuation of attenuator in both transmitter and receiver, peak-to-peak voltage and bias current of the LED. It is displayed in experimental results that this real-time VLC system achieve a 2.5Gb/s data rate under a 1.7 m free space transmission length successfully.

Abstract:Visible light communication(VLC) is an emerging wireless optical communication technology, which combines illumination and communication. So it has a broad application prospect that makes it a research hotspot in recent years. The main challenge of VLC’s development is the limited modulation bandwidth of LED, which leads to a limited transmission rate of the VLC system. To solve this problem, hardware pre-equalization circuit is used in the VLC system. We design and use single and cascaded bridged-T amplitude equalizers. By combining the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) technology, the VLC system’s modulation bandwidth and transmission rate can be improved efficiently.

Abstract:We propose quasi-linear preequalization to be used for high speed visible light communication (VLC) system. Compared with zero-forcing preequalization, this kind of preequalization method is more suitable for a real VLC experimental system with peak power limitation. We carry out simulations and experiments to test the performance of quasi-linear preequalization. With this equalizer, the 3 dB bandwidth of the system can be extended from 17 MHz to 450 MHz. We implement 2.32 Gbit/s phosphorescent white light-emitting diode (LED) VLC transmission over 1 m distance with quasi-linear equalizer, bit and power loading OFDM, differential amplification positive intrinsic negative diode (PIN) receivers, and maximum ratio combining algorithm. To our knowledge, this is the highest transmission data rate based on a phosphorescent white LED VLC system.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) has no doubt become a promising candidate for future wireless communications due to the increasing trends in the usage of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In addition to indoor high-speed wireless access and positioning applications, VLC usage in outdoor scenarios, such as vehicle networks and intelligent transportation systems, are also attracting significant interest. However, the complex outdoor environment and ambient noise are the key challenges for long-range high-speed VLC outdoor applications. To improve system performance and transmission distance, we propose to use receiver diversity technology in an outdoor VLC system. Maximal ratio combining-based receiver diversity technology is utilized in two receivers to achieve the maximal signal-to-noise ratio. A 400-Mb/s VLC transmission using a phosphor-based white LED and a 1-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing VLC transmission using a red-green-blue LED are both successfully achieved over a 100-m outdoor distance with the bit error rate below the 7% forward error correction limit of 3.8 x 10(-3). To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest data rate at 100-m outdoor VLC transmission ever achieved. The experimental results clearly prove the benefit and feasibility of receiver diversity technology for long-range high-speed outdoor VLC systems. Abstract:Compared with multicolor-chip integrated white LEDs, phosphor-based white LEDs are more attractive for daily illumination due to lower cost and complexity, and thus they are preferable for future commercial use of visible light communication (VLC) systems. However, the application of phosphorescent white LEDs has a lower data rate than multicolor-chip integrated LEDs because of severe nonlinear impairments and limited bandwidth caused by the slow-responding phosphor. In this paper, for the first time we propose to employ phosphorescent white LEDs based on silicon substrate with adaptive bit-loading discrete multitone (DMT) modulation and a memoryless polynomial based nonlinear equalizer to achieve a high-speed VLC system. We also present a comprehensive comparison among nonlinear equalizers based on the Volterra series model, memory polynomial model, memoryless polynomial model and deep neural network (DNN) with experimental results utilizing a silicon substrate phosphorescent white LED, and provide detailed suggestions on how to choose the most suitable nonlinear mitigation scheme considering different practical conditions and the tradeoff between complexity and performance. Beyond 3.00 Gb/s DMT VLC transmission over 1-m indoor free space is successfully demonstrated with bit error rate (BER) under the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8×10-3. As far as we know, this is the highest data rate ever reported for VLC systems based on a single high-power phosphorescent white LED.

Abstract:We propose a two-cascaded, constant-resistance, symmetrical bridged-T amplitude equalizer for a high-speed visible light communication(VLC) system. With the pre-equalization circuit, the-3 d B bandwidth of the VLC system can be extended from 12 to 235 MHz using a commercially available phosphorescent white light-emitting diode(LED), a blue filter, and a low-cost PIN photodiode. The data rate is 1.20 Gbit/s, exploiting 16-quadrature amplitude modulation-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with a 300 MHz modulation bandwidth over50 cm of free-space transmission under the pre-forward error correction limit of 3.8 × 10-3. To our knowledge,this is the highest-3 d B bandwidth and the highest data rate ever achieved by using a pre-equalization circuit and white LED in a VLC system.
Enhanced Performance of Single-Input Multiple-Output Visible Light Communication System Utilizing Space Diversity Technology

Abstract:Contradictions among receiver optical power, bandwidth of photodiode, and transmission distance are ubiquitous in visible light communication (VLC) systems. In order to moderate such contradictions and improve the performance of VLC systems, we proposed a space diversity receiver for a light-emitting diode (LED)-based VLC system and experimentally demonstrated the highest data rate for an RGB LED with a 1.4 Gbit/s data rate employing two detectors located in different space positions at the same time. The maximal ratio combining algorithm was used in the VLC system for the first time. As a result, the bit error ratios of the receivers can be reduced by 48.08 dB (red LED), 12.04 dB (green LED), and 27.48 dB (blue LED) compared with any separate detector. The performance of the VLC system was significantly improved. It turned out that it was highly desirable to use multiantennas in the VLC system. Abstract:This paper introduces applying power exponential software pre-equalization in visible light communication system based on a commercial phosphorescent white LED for high speed transmission. Simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the performance of power exponential pre-equalization. 2.08Gbit/s VLC transmission over 1m free-space distance is implemented through experimental demonstration. As far as we know, this transmission data rate is higher than the data rate record created by applying hardware pre-equalization in a phosphorescent white LED based VLC system.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) has received more and more attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a novel configuration of unidirectional subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) -wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) -VLC system adopting quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. Based on this configuration, we successfully demonstrate a 3x1 multiple-input single-output (MISO) OFDM-VLC transmission experiment using three blue phosphor LEDs. The transmission distance can be as long as 140cm. We also demonstrate an 800-Mb/s MISO SCM-WDM VLC transmission experiment based on RGB-LED with 66-cm transmission distance. In the two experiments, pre-equalization and post-equalization both are implemented to compensate for the poor frequency response of LEDs. And the properties of EVM and BER in all channels are measured and analysed.

Abstract:The bandwidth of white light emitting diodes (WLEDs) is an important factor that affects most of the system performances in visible light communication (VLC). It is mainly limited by the down-conversion phosphors. We propose in this paper to employ nanomaterial phosphors with short fluorescence lifetime and high quantum yield in VLC. The white-emitting device of bandwidth-based lifetime was fabricated by using several kinds of nanophosphors with different fluorescence lifetimes. Moreover, we proposed two theoretical models to analyze the factors that affect bandwidth. Compared with the commercial YAG-based WLEDs, the bandwidth of nanophosphor-based WLEDs can be improved over three times and close to the blue excitation sources. Our study indicates that nanophosphors can become promising fluorescent materials in VLC, and provides a new direction for developing wide-bandwidth VLC systems.

Abstract:LED replacing fluorescent and incandescent lamps for lighting has become an obvious trend.The feature that LED can be used for both illumination and communications makes visible-light communication(VLC) become a hot point in recent years.With the rapid popularization of computers and smart devices,the bandwidth and coverage of access networks need further improvement.VLC technology is a promising communication technology for high speed data transmission to break through the bottlenecks.A main challenge of this technology is the limited modulation bandwidth of white LED.Researchers have proposed a variety of techniques,such as equalization technology,blue filtering,high-order modulation formats,discrete multi-tone(DMT) modulation,wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) technology,and multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) technology,to extend bandwidth and increase transmission speed.The principles and performances of those techniques are analyzed and discussed to provide a reference for future researches.

Abstract:Visible light communication technology has high security and anti-interference in electromagnetic interference environment. The use of LED devices in optical transmitters has the advantages of low cost and low power consumption, but it is also limited by the low bandwidth of the components. In this context, a PAM-4 VLC transmitter system with pre- and post-equalization using three-color RGB LEDs as light-emitting devices was established. According to the experimental results, the communication system under test using the pre- and post-equalizations can achieve a data transmission rate of 2.9 times and a 2.5 times expanded bandwidth.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel full-duplex bi-directional subcarrier multiplexing (SCM)-wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) visible light communication (VLC) system based on commercially available red-green-blue (RGB) light emitting diode (LED) and phosphor-based LED (P-LED) with 575-Mb/s downstream and 225-Mb/s upstream transmission, employing various modulation orders of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). For the downlink, red and green colors/wavelengths are assigned to carry useful information, while blue chip is just kept lighting to maintain the white color illumination, and for the uplink, the low-cost P-LED is implemented. In this demonstration, pre-equalization and post-equalization are also adopted to compensate the severe frequency response of LEDs. Using this scheme, 4-user downlink and 1-user uplink transmission can be achieved. Furthermore, it can support more users by adjusting the bandwidth of each sub-channel. Bit error rates (BERs) of all links are below pre-forward-error-correction (pre-FEC) threshold of 3.8x 10(-3) after 66-cm free-space delivery. The results show that this scheme has great potential in the practical VLC system.

Abstract:High-speed light emitting diode (LED) based visible light communication (VLC) system is restricted by the limited LED bandwidth, low detector sensitivity, and linear and nonlinear distortions. Thus, single-and two-cascaded constant-resistance symmetrical bridged-T amplitude hardware pre-equalizers, carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP) modulation, and a three-stage hybrid postequalizer are investigated to increase transmission data rate for a high-speed LED-based VLC system. The schemes utilized by the hybrid postequalizer aremodified cascaded multimodulus algorithm, Volterra series based nonlinear compensation algorithm and decision-directed least mean square algorithm. With these technologies, we successfully implement high-speed CAP32, CAP64, and CAP128 VLC experimental system over 1-m free space transmission with bit error rate under the hard decision-forward error correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). System performance improvement employing these key technologies is also validated through experimental demonstration. With the superposition of each stage of the hybrid postequalizer, system performance will be improved. And utilizing two-cascaded hardware pre-equalizer will provide more accurate channel compensation than a single pre-equalizer.

A seamless fiber-visible light communication (VLC) bi-directional network with an over-all throughput of 8Gbit/s is experimentally demonstrated enabled by hardware pre-equalization circuit, software post-equalization algorithm and multi-banding multi-user access.

Abstract:Light emitting diodes (LEDs) based visible light communication (VLC) has been considered as a promising technology for indoor high-speed wireless access, due to its unique advantages, such as low cost, license free and high security. To achieve high-speed VLC transmission, carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP) modulation has been utilized for its lower complexity and high spectral efficiency. Moreover, to compensate the linear and nonlinear distortions such as frequency attenuation, sampling time offset, LED nonlinearity etc., series of pre- and post-equalization schemes should be employed in high-speed VLC systems. In this paper, we make an investigation on several advanced pre- and post-equalization schemes for high-order CAP modulation based VLC systems. We propose to use a weighted pre-equalization technique to compensate the LED frequency attenuation. In post-equalization, a hybrid post equalizer is proposed, which consists of a linear equalizer, a Volterra series based nonlinear equalizer, and a decision-directed least mean square (DD-LMS) equalizer. Modified cascaded multi-modulus algorithm (M-CMMA) is employed to update the weights of the linear and the nonlinear equalizer, while DD-LMS can further improve the performance after the pre-convergence. Based on high-order CAP modulation and these equalization schemes, we have experimentally demonstrated a 1.35-Gb/s, a 4.5-Gb/s and a 8-Gb/s high-speed indoor VLC transmission systems. The results show the benefit and feasibility of the proposed equalization schemes for high-speed VLC systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate 1.1-Gb/s visible light communication (VLC) employing carrier-less amplitude and phase modulation (CAP) and a commercially available phosphorescent white light emitting diode (LED). Optical blue filtering, pre-compensation, and decision feedback equalization are used to compensate the frequency response of the phosphor-based white LED. Various modulation orders of CAP signals are investigated to maximize the capacity of the VLC system. The record data rate of 1.1 Gb/s with the bit error rate performance below the FEC limit of 10(-3) is successfully achieved >23-cm air-transmission via a 220-MBaud 32-CAP signal.
