Abstract:Gold nanoparticles are the most extensively studied nanomaterials for biomedical application due to their unique properties, such as rapid and simple synthesis, large surface area, strong adsorption ability and facile conjugation to various biomolecules. The remarkable photophysical properties of gold nanoparticles have provided plenty of opportunities for the preparation of gold nanoparticles- based optical biosensors, while the excellent biocompatibility, conductivity, catalytic properties and large surface-to-volume ratio have facilitated the application of gold nanoparticles in the construction of electrochemical biosensors. In this review, we mainly detail the gold nanoparticles-based optical and electrochemical biosensors for biomedical application in the recent two years, which have exhibited greatly enhanced analytical performances in the detection of DNA, proteins and some important small molecules.

Abstract:Over the past decades, various techniques have been developed to obtain materials at a nanoscale level to design biosensors with high sensitivity, selectivity and efficiency. Metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) are of particular interests and have received much attention because of their unique physical, chemical and catalytic properties. This review summarizes the progress made in enzymatic biosensors based on the use of MONPs. Synthetic methods, strategies for immobilization, and the functions of MONPs in enzymatic biosensing systems are reviewed and discussed. The article is subdivided into sections on enzymatic biosensors based on (a) zinc oxide nanoparticles, (b) titanium oxide nanoparticles, (c) iron oxide nanoparticles, and (d) other metal oxide nanoparticles. While substantial advances have been made in MONPs-based enzymatic biosensors, their applications to real samples still lie ahead because issues such as reproducibility and sensor stability have to be solved. The article contains 256 references.

Abstract:This article reviews recent advances in nanomaterials based electrochemical DNA biosensors and bioassays. Colloidal gold/silver/platinum, semiconductor nanoparticles, nanowires and markers loaded nanocarriers (carbon nanotubes, apoferritin and silica nanoparticles), dendrimers, magnetic nanoparticles and liposome beads are discussed. The enormous signal enhancement associated with the use of nanomaterial labels and with the formation of nanomaterial–DNA hybrids provides the basis for ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of disease-related gene markers, biothreat agents, or infectious agents. In general, all endeavors cited here are geared to achieve one or more of the following goals: signal amplification by several orders of magnitude, lower detection limits, and detecting multiple targets.

Abstract:The advances of nanomaterials have provided exciting technologies and novel materials for protein detection, based on the unique properties associated with nanoscale phenomena such as plasmon resonance, catalysis and energy transfer. This article reviews a series of nanomaterials including nanoparticles, nanofibers, nanowires, and nanosheets, and evaluates their performances in the application for protein detection, focusing on approaches that realize ultrasensitive detection. Many of these nanomaterials were used to analyze clinically relevant protein biomarkers. Their detection in the picomolar, femtomolar or even zeptomolar regime has been realized, sometimes even with naked-eye readout. We summarize the detection methods and results according to materials and targets, review the current challenges, and discuss the solution in the context of technological integration such as combining nanomaterials with microfluidics, and classical analytical technologies.

Abstract:Biosensors have achieved significant progress in the past decades and are now widely used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. A biosensor is defined as a device for analyte detection or physiological signal measurements, which usually combines selective biological elements and transducers that convert signals resulting from the interaction between the analyte and biological elements to other easily measured outputs (eg, electrical, optical, and thermal signals)[1]. A broad range of biomaterials have been involved in building various biosensors. The major components usually include a probe that selectively responds to a certain biological element, such as deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), aptamer, antibody, enzyme, cell, and so on, and a transducer that transforms the physiochemical information into optical, electrical, magnetic, electrochemical, and thermal signals. Due to the advantages of high surface area, miniaturized size, and associated new physical properties, nanomaterials have drawn a great deal of attention as components for biosensors. Abstract: According to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) definition, porous materials are divided into three classes: microporous (50 nm). When the pore dimension is in the nanometer range, such materials can be denoted as nanoporous materials [1]. Recently, nanoporous materials have found increasing applications in many areas, including bioengineering [2], catalysis [3], and biosensing [4], due to their large surface area, tailored pore size distribution, controllable pore structure, and versatile composition. Especially for biosensors, the use of nanoporous materials can significantly improve the analysis performance of the biosensors since their large surface area and versatile porous structure are beneficial for the loading of large amounts of active catalysts and they have a fast diffusion rate. In fact, various kinds of biosensors have been designated and fabricated on the basis of nanoporous materials [5–10] in the past decade and used for the detection of various biocomponents, including glucose, DNA, antibodies, and bacteria, with improved sensitivity. The composition of the nanoporous materials is versatile [11–16], including silica, carbon, metal, metal oxide, and hybrid composition. In addition, their applications cover both the electrochemical [11–16] and optical fields [17, 18].

Abstract:Nanomaterials have greatly boosted the biosensor field taking advantage of their optical, catalytic, magnetic and adsorption properties. While noble metal and carbon-based materials have been most often used, metal oxide nanomaterials (MONMs) have recently emerged as a useful platform for their high stability, low cost and versatility in chemical properties. In this article, we first introduce fundamental surface properties of MONMs, especially interactions with DNA. A few sensing strategies are then discussed including the modulation of the catalytic activities of MONMs, and competitive adsorption. DNA can serve as a signaling molecule, and a competitor to probe adsorption of other molecules by MONMs. In addition, DNA can also modulate the catalytic activity of MONMs. Such modulated activities were also observed by several small molecules or ions. In each case, related biosensor designs are introduced. Representative sensors using these mechanisms are reviewed and some future trends are discussed at the end.

Abstract:With the continuous advancement of science and technology, the application of nanomaterials in the field of biosensors is becoming increasingly widespread. Nanobiosensors are widely used due to their high sensitivity, selectivity, small size, and low cost, finding applications in medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, biotechnology, and industrial automation, among others. This paper primarily discusses the research progress of biosensors based on nanomaterials and their applications in biological detection and medical diagnosis. It introduces the working principles of nanomaterial-based biosensors, provides practical application cases of nanomaterial biosensors in various fields, such as protein detection, DNA detection and pathogen detection. And this paper also looks forward to the prospects, as well as the advantages and disadvantages, of nanomaterial-based biosensors. With the deepening of nanomaterial research and the continuous innovation of technology, biosensors based on nanomaterials are expected to play an increasingly important role in biological detection, medical diagnosis, and biomedical research. Simultaneously, they also hold the potential for widespread application in clinical diagnosis, biosecurity, and environmental protection.

Abstract:With recent advances in nanotechnology, great progress has been made in biosensors based on nanomaterials, but there are still numerous challenges to overcome. We describe nanomaterial-based biosensors for researchers new to the field, paying particular attention to metal nanoparticles and carbon nanotube (CNT)-based label-free approaches. Label-free monitoring of biorecognition events provides a promising platform, which is simple, cost-effective, and requires no external modification to biomolecules. Using examples from recent reports, we illustrate the diversity of biological recognition events and the range of experimental techniques employed for metal-nanoparticle-based and label-free characterization.

Abstract:The introduction of functional nanomaterials into biosensing fields advanced analytical chemistry and opened a series of concepts for design of new analytical and tracing tools. It not only improved the stability and biocompatibility of biosensing interfaces, also has greatly enhanced the biosensing response to recognition event, thus met the need for detection of trace amounts of a wide variety of analytes and acquisition of ultraweak biological signals, and promoted the development of life science, biomedicine, food and environmental science. Different nanomaterials have been functionalized to modify the biosensing interfaces for accelerating the electron transfer, lowing the activation energy, and/or concentrating the target analytes, or to act as nanoprobes for labeling the recognition molecules, in which the nanomaterials can act as catalysts, enzyme mimics, signal emitters or carriers for loading of signal molecules to produce amplified signals. By coupling with the specificity of biological recognition events, the functional nanomaterials and nanoprobes have been quickly developed for highly sensitive and specific biosensing both in vitro and in vivo. This review focuses on the significant advances in use of functional nanomaterials for design of amplified biosensing strategies. Abstract:The endless development in nanotechnology has introduced new vitality in device fabrication including biosensor design for biomedical applications. With outstanding features like suitable biocompatibility, good electrical and thermal conductivity, wide surface area and catalytic activity, nanomaterials have been considered excellent and promising immobilisation candidates for the development of high-impact biosensors after they emerged. Owing to these reasons, the present review deals with the efficient use of nanomaterials as immobilisation candidates for biosensor fabrication. These include the implementation of carbon nanomaterials-graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanoparticles, carbon nanodots-and MXenes, likewise their synergistic impact when merged with metal oxide nanomaterials. Furthermore, we also discuss the origin of the synthesis of some nanomaterials, the challenges associated with the use of those nanomaterials and the chemistry behind their incorporation with other materials for biosensor design. The last section covers the prospects for the development and application of the highlighted nanomaterials.

Abstract:In the last few decades, numerous strategies and technologies for the quantification in different matrices have been proposed because of their importance for the global environment and public health. One of the specific areas for scientific nanomaterial research today is the advancement of novel sensors with interest in the food sector. Among them, sensors based on nanomaterials have attracted increasing attention and allow researchers to explore new principles to improve analytical performance. The functionalized nanomaterials are used as catalytic technologies, platforms for immobilization, or optical or electroactive labels to enhance the productivity of bio-sensing with better accuracy, reliability, and selectiveness. Nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, metal nanoparticles, nanowires, nanocomposite, and nanostructured materials play a crucial role in designing sensors and biosensing systems that are interested in food analysis applications. Besides, these nanobiosystems also offer benefits when designing novel food detection strategies. The sensing capability of sensor systems is enhanced by the use of nanomaterials such as magnetic nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, nanotubes, quantum dots, nanowires, nanochannels, etc. These nanomaterials display high load transfer capacity, making them ideal for lower detection limits and higher sensitivity values, which contribute to improving the efficiency of biosensors as a label or modifier transducer. The number of food products intended to protect against harm to microorganisms and impurities is increasing. In order to achieve these objectives, it is vital to establish super-precise, reliable, advanced, fast, and cost-effective sensing techniques such as electrochemical sensors/biosensors. Although different forms of electrochemical sensing methods based on nanomaterials have been introduced on the market, the reliability of commercial products is still insufficient to meet the practical objective. This chapter focuses on trends in the technology of nanobiosensors and nanomaterials used in biosensing devices. Finally, the application of biosensor-based nanomaterials in this field of research is being discussed.

Abstract:Nanomaterials have become one of the most interesting sensing materials because of their unique size- and shape-dependent optical properties, high surface energy and surface-to-volume ratio, and tunable surface properties. Aptamers are oligonucleotides that can bind their target ligands with high affinity. The use of nanomaterials that are bioconjugated with aptamers for selective and sensitive detection of analytes such as small molecules, metal ions, proteins, and cells has been demonstrated. This review focuses on recent progress in the development of biosensors by integrating functional aptamers with different types of nanomaterials, including quantum dots, magnetic nanoparticles (NPs), metallic NPs, and carbon nanotubes. Colorimetry, fluorescence, electrochemistry, surface plasmon resonance, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and magnetic resonance imaging are common detection modes for a broad range of analytes with high sensitivity and selectivity when using aptamer bioconjugated nanomaterials (Apt-NMs). We highlight the important roles that the size and concentration of nanomaterials, the secondary structure and density of aptamers, and the multivalent interactions play in determining the specificity and sensitivity of the nanosensors towards analytes. Advantages and disadvantages of the Apt-NMs for bioapplications are focused.

Abstract:When chemical, physical, or biological factors were being measured in the early years, large sensing types of equipment were used. They were also inaccurate and the end user had to manually interpret and even decode the sensor output, in addition to limited stability. Nanoparticles, nanowires, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanorods, and quantum dots (QDs) are some of the nanomaterials that are frequently employed in the production of nanobiosensors. The ability to change color, great detection sensitivity, a huge surface area, high carrier capacity, high stability, and high thermal and electrical conductivity are just a few characteristics that nanomaterials have. These sensing systems can identify a wide range of clinically important molecules, including nucleic acids, viruses, bacteria, cancer antigens, pharmaceuticals, narcotic drugs, toxins, contaminants, and even whole cells in a variety of sensing media, from buffers to more complex environments like urine, blood, or sputum. The most recent developments examined in this research have enormous potential for using nanomaterials in point-of-care diagnostics and early illness screening. The current review focuses on the principles of nanotechnology-enabled biosensors and their architectural design. The classification of nanobiosensors, various attributes, and various fabrication methods are covered in this article. The review broadens people's perspectives on the materials used to make biosensors and the potential uses for nanotechnology-enabled biosensors.

Abstract:This paper provides an overview of the preparation and application of gold nanomaterials in biosensing, including four aspects: biomolecular detection, medical bioimaging, pathogen detection, and immunoassay. Firstly, the preparation methods of gold nanomaterials are introduced, including chemical reduction, laser radiation, and vacuum evaporation. Secondly, the applications of gold nanomaterials biosensors in various fields are outlined. One such field is biomolecule detection. gold nanomaterials has good optoelectronic properties, which can quantitatively detect biomolecules through fluorescence signals. Another field is medical bio-imaging. gold nanomaterials exhibits high X-ray absorption coefficients, rendering it a suitable contrast agent for medical imaging. Additionally, gold nanomaterials displays a high antigen-antibody reaction activity, making it an effective tool for rapid pathogen detection. Finally, the prospective development trend of gold nanomaterials biosensors is presented.

Abstract:Due to their unique properties including the small size, high surface-to-bulk ratio, interesting optical, electric, and catalytic properties, metal nanoparticles attract much attention and have been used as promising new materials in nano-technology with numerous applications, such as the powerful signal indicators and the effective electrode modifier in DNA biosensors. As a result, the introduction of metal nanoparticles into DNA biosensing techniques has offered excellent prospects for the miniaturization and cost-efficient detection of DNA analysis system with high sensitivity and selectivity. In this short review, we would like to place emphasis on the recent new studies on DNA biosensing techniques combining metal nanoparticle-based signal amplification. Different assay strategies based on metal nanoparticle for investigating DNA hybridization are presented herein, including optical, electrochemical, electrical, gravimetric, and magnetic signal transduction techniques, along with the advantages of each detection method combining metal nanoparticle as a powerful amplifier.

Abstract:Nanomaterial technology is a comprehensive subject with strong intersections, and its related research content involves a wide range of modern scientific and technological fields. The science and technology in the area of nanomaterials has attracted the attention of many research groups over the past few years. By its very nature, this topic has a lot of room for research, related to very tiny objects in the nanometer range. Nanomaterials refer to the sudden changes in the properties of substances when they reach the nanometer scale, resulting in special properties. In this paper, we introduce various nanomaterials commonly used in the field of biosensing, and briefly explain the advantages and disadvantages of nanoscale biosensors. At the same time, we also explain the working principles of various types of biosensors based on nanomaterial technology, including electrochemical biosensors, optical biosensors, and piezoelectric biosensors. In addition, we also introduce the sensing targets of common biosensors, such as enzymes, DNA, microorganisms, etc. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects for the application of nanomaterials technology in biosensing, and analyze the current trends and future directions.
