Abstract:This paper presents a condition in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) for the quadratic stability of discrete-time interval 2-D systems. With Matlab, it is very convenient to solve this problem. Necessity shows that the condition is less conservative in some cases. The illustrative example shows that this method is effective to check the quadratic stability of discrete-time interval 2-D systems.

Abstract:This chapter presents the matrix theory concepts of diagonal stability and also of D-stability and gives the properties of these classes of matrices in various cases that are used extensively in the remaining chapters of this book as well as related results that are important in themselves. It is thus intended as a reference chapter for the whole book. The reader does not have to read this whole chapter before reading the rest of the book, but rather consult it when necessary. There is, of course, no claim to completeness, in terms of theoretical results on matrix diagonal and D-stability, but the Notes and References section at the end of the chapter points out where many additional results can be found.

Based on the traditional pseudodiagonalization,robust pseudodiagonalization is presented;necessary and sufficient condition for achieving robust diagonal dominance is deduced. In final,an example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper introduces four discrete-time analogs of different types of matrix stability: diagonal, simultaneous, vertex, and D-stability, the last three being defined in terms of a certain (associated) polytope of matrices. The diagonal stability of any vertex of this polytope is shown to imply its simultaneous stability and hence D-stability of the vertices. It is shown, by a counterexample, that D-stability, as in the continuous-time case, is not equivalent to diagonal stability. Several important classes for which this equivalence is true are identified. It is shown that simultaneous stability of the vertices is equivalent to the simultaneous stability of the whole polytope, and it is conjectured that this equivalence holds without the requirement of simultaneity. Some other conjectures relating the four types of stability are made, and it is shown that in the 2 X 2 case all four are equivalent.

Abstract:We consider a class of matrices with a specific structure that arises, among other examples, in dynamic models for biological regulation of enzyme synthesis (Tyson and Othmer, 1978). We first show that a stability condition given in (Tyson and Othmer, 1978) is in fact a necessary and sufficient condition for diagonal stability of this class of matrices. We then revisit a recent generalization of (Tyson and Othmer, 1978) to nonlinear systems given in (Sontag, 2005), and recover the same stability condition using our diagonal stability result. Unlike the input-output based arguments employed in (Sontag, 2005), our proof gives a procedure to construct a Lyapunov function. Finally we study static nonlinearities that appear in the feedback path, and give a stability condition that mimics the Popov criterion.

Abstract:This paper shows that diagonal Liapunov functions play an essential role in the robust stability problem of linear autonomous continuous and discrete-time systems in state-space form subjected to a broad class of perturbations. The results obtained generalize a well-known result of Persidskii and are related to a variety of similar results in the literature. Techniques are suggested for applying the results to the problem of evaluating robust stability bounds in different contexts. Several examples are given.

Abstract:To study discrete dynamical systems of different types --- deterministic, statistical and quantum --- we develop various approaches. We introduce the concept of a system of discrete relations on an abstract simplicial complex and develop algorithms for analysis of compatibility and construction of canonical decompositions of such systems. To illustrate these techniques we describe their application to some cellular automata. Much attention is paid to study symmetries of the systems. In the case of deterministic systems, we reveale some important relations between symmetries and dynamics. We demonstrate that moving soliton-like structures arise inevitably in deterministic dynamical system whose symmetry group splits the set of states into a finite number of group orbits. We develop algorithms and programs exploiting discrete symmetries to study microcanonical ensembles and search phase transitions in mesoscopic lattice models. We propose an approach to quantization of discrete systems based on introduction of gauge connection with values in unitary representations of finite groups --- the elements of the connection are interpreted as amplitudes of quantum transitions. We discuss properties of a quantum description of finite systems. In particular, we demonstrate that a finite quantum system can be embedded into a larger classical system. Computer algebra and computational group theory methods were useful tools in our study.

Abstract:Diagonally dominant matrices have many applications in systems and control theory. Linear dynamical systems with scaled diagonally dominant drift matrices, which include stable positive systems, allow for scalable stability analysis. For example, it is known that Lyapunov inequalities for this class of systems admit diagonal solutions. In this paper, we present an extension of scaled diagonally dominance to block partitioned matrices. We show that our definition describes matrices admitting block-diagonal solutions to Lyapunov inequalities and that these solutions can be computed using linear algebraic tools. We also show how in some cases the Lyapunov inequalities can be decoupled into a set of lower dimensional linear matrix inequalities, thus leading to improved scalability. We conclude by illustrating some advantages and limitations of our results with numerical examples.

Abstract:2D systems, also known as doubly-indexed systems, have gained an increasingly special attention in the control community, as they allow for modeling systems with more complex dynamics than the classical so called 1D systems where the signals are indexed by one variable only usually representing the time. Like for 1D systems, stability conditions have been proposed for 2D systems in the form of a linear matrix inequality (LMI) feasibility test, as such conditions may be tested by solving a convex optimization problem, and as such conditions may open the door for a number of developments such as establishing robust stability and designing stabilizing controllers. This paper aims at presenting, under a unified framework, various LMI stability conditions for 2D systems that have been proposed in the literature, from pioneering to recent contributions, in order to provide the reader with a comprehensive collection that may serve as a source of historical information as well as a platform for comparing the major characteristics of each condition. Also, this paper proposes novel investigations of the presented conditions, in particular through conservatism and complexity analyses carried out in the best cases, in the worst cases, and for various specific numerical examples with different type of dynamics, dimensions and difficulty.

Special Stable Matrices and Their Non-square Counterpart

Abstract:In this note, we discuss the extension of several important stable square matrices, e.g., D-stable matrices, diagonal dominance matrices, Volterra-Lyapunov stable matrices, to their corresponding non-square matrices. The extension is motivated by some distributed control-related problems, such as decentralized unconditional stability and decentralized integral controllability for non-square processes. We will provide the connections of conditions between these special square matrices and their associated non-square counterparts. Some conjectures for these special matrices are proposed for future research.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, Volume 62, Issue 1, Page 400-414, February 2024. We prove that, for every discrete-time linear switching system in two complex variables and with finitely many switching states, either the system is Lyapunov stable or there exists a trajectory which escapes to infinity with at least linear speed. We also give a checkable algebraic criterion to distinguish these two cases. This dichotomy was previously known to hold for systems in two real variables but is known to be false in higher dimensions and for systems with infinitely many switching states.

Abstract:It is shown that testing a matrix A /spl isin/ R/sup nxn/ for discrete-time D-stability is equivalent to testing if the structured singular value (SSV or /spl mu/) of a matrix M /spl isin/ R/sup 2nx2n/ obtained from A, is less than unity. Testing for D-semistability (i.e. the property that the product AD has all eigenvalues in the closed left half plane) is shown to be equivalent to testing if the SSV of (M-I)/sup -1/(M+I) is less than or equal to unity. Abstract:The robust stability problem of discrete-time linear systems subjected to a class of sector-bounded nonlinear time-varying perturbations is considered. The idea of a simultaneous quadratic Lyapunov function-a single Lyapunov function that guarantees the asymptotic stability of the whole class of perturbed system-is used to analyze the problem. It is shown that certain classes of nominal system matrices play an important role in this simultaneous robust stability problem. In particular, simultaneous stability is implied by diagonal stability and it is shown that, for several important classes of matrices, the converse also holds. D-stability is defined for the discrete-time case and is shown to be equivalent to the stability of a finite set of matrices which are the vertices of a certain polytope. This gives an easily tested necessary condition for diagonal stability

Abstract:We describe the notion of stability of coherent systems as a framework to deal with redundancy. We define stable coherent systems and show how this notion can help the design of reliable systems. We demonstrate that the reliability of stable systems can be efficiently computed using the algebraic versions of improved inclusion-exclusion formulas and sum of disjoint products.

Abstract:This note analyzes exponential stability of a class of linear discrete multidimensional systems. Using a multidimensional comparison principle for estimating the system componentwise exponential convergence and a solvable Lie algebra condition, a sufficient condition for exponential stability of linear multidimensional systems is presented. The stability condition can be easily examined by computing the system matrices in finite steps. This is demonstrated by an example.

Abstract:The positivity, stability and stabilizability of switched discrete-time linear singular (SDLS) systems are studied. Our analysis builds on the recently introduced one-step-map for SDLS systems of index-1 and the stability of positive singular systems. We first provide the positive conditions for SDLS systems and the sufficient stability conditions for positive SDLS systems. After that we derive notions and characterizations for stabilizability of positive SDLS systems. Furthermore, we generalize the notion of joint spectral subradius of a finite set of matrix pairs, which allows us to fully characterize stabilizability.

Abstract:We study bipartite unitary operators which stay invariant under the local actions of diagonal unitary and orthogonal groups. We investigate structural properties of these operators, arguing that the diagonal symmetry makes them suitable for analytical study. As a first application, we construct large new families of dual unitary gates in arbitrary finite dimensions, which are important toy models for entanglement spreading in quantum circuits. We then analyze the non-local nature of these invariant operators, both in discrete (operator Schmidt rank) and continuous (entangling power) settings. Our scrutiny reveals that these operators can be used to simulate any bipartite unitary gate via stochastic local operations and classical communication. Furthermore, we establish a one-to-one connection between the set of local diagonal unitary invariant dual unitary operators with maximum entangling power and the set of complex Hadamard matrices. Finally, we discuss distinguishability of unitary operators in the setting of the stated diagonal symmetry.
