Abstract:A series of novel emission-tunable ScPO4:xTb3+, yEu3+ phosphors were prepared by a high temperature solid-state reaction. The phase purity was examined using X-ray diffraction refinement. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the crystal information, luminescence properties and energy transfer between Tb3+ and Eu3+ are analyzed systematically. The cross relaxation from 5D3 to 5D4 of single doped Tb3+ in the host is investigated. The energy transfer between Tb3+ and Eu3+ has been demonstrated by the decay times, which are ascribed to the dipole–dipole (d–d) mechanism, and the ηT reaches 54.4%. Additionally, the energy transfer critical distance between Tb3+ and Eu3+ was calculated to be about 12.95 A. The emission color can be adjusted from green to yellow to orange-red by tuning the ratio of Tb3+/Eu3+. The ScPO4:0.03Tb3+, 0.025Eu3+ exhibits good thermal stability, indicating its great potential in w-LED applications.

Abstract:LaPO4:Ln3+ (Ln=Eu, Ce, Tb) nanocrystals were successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal process in the presence of oleic acid. The as-prepared crystals were well characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), optical spectra as well as the kinetic decay times, respectively. In the synthesis process, oleic acid as a surfactant has played a crucial role in confining the growth and size of the LaPO4:Ln3+ phosphors. All the samples are well crystallized and assigned to the monoclinic monazite-type structure of the LaPO4 phase. The prepared LaPO4:Ln3+ phosphors present a narrow distribution with an average particle size of about 15nm. Upon excitation by ultraviolet radiation, the LaPO4:Eu3+ phosphors show the characteristic 5D0–7F1–3 emission lines of Eu3+, while the LaPO4:Ce3+,Tb3+ exhibits the characteristic 5D0–7F3–6 emission lines of Tb3+. It is believed that these rare earth ion doped (Eu3+ ion or Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions co-doped) monoclinic monazite-type LaPO4 nanocrystals could find potential application as future advanced optical materials.
Luminescence Enhancement of PPO/PVT Scintillators by CeF3 Nanoparticles

Abstract:Oleic acid coated cerium fluoride (CeF3) nanoparticles were synthesized by a wet chemistry method. The average size of the nanoparticles is 12nm, and the nanoparticles are dispersible in polyvinyl toluene (PVT) monomer due to the oleic acid coating. Different amounts of as-synthesized CeF3 nanoparticles are then loaded into PVT matrix with 0.5wt% 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) by bulk polymerization. The luminescence of PPO/PVT is enhanced by CeF3 nanoparticles to 3 and 2.5 times under UV and X-ray excitation, respectively. This enhancement is due to the energy transfer from CeF3 to PPO, the increase of the stopping power by doping CeF3 nanoparticles into PPO/PVT and the escape of charges from CeF3 nanoparticles.

Abstract:Radiation detection demands new scintillators with high quantum efficiency, high energy resolution, and short luminescence lifetimes. Herein, we report the enhancement in the photoluminescence and x-ray luminescence from CdTe quantum dots in LaPO4:Ce/CdTe nanocomposites and their potential applications for radiation detection. The luminescence enhancement is attributed to energy transfer from LaPO4:Ce to CdTe quantum dots in the nanocomposites. LaPO4:Ce nanoparticles have a high stopping power for radiation but their emission is in the ultraviolet range that is reabsorbed in most polymer host materials. CdTe quantum dots have strong photoluminescence and size-tunable emissions but very weak scintillation emission due to their low stopping power. The combination of LaPO4:Ce nanoparticles and CdTe quantum dots takes the advantages of both materials to make a promising nanocomposite scintillator for radiation detection.

Abstract:A series of single-composition phosphors LiSrPO4: Ce3+, Tb3+, Mn2+ have been prepared via a high-temperature solid-state reaction process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electric microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and lifetimes were utilized to characterize the samples. The luminescence properties of Ce3+ in LiSrPO4 have been discussed. The energy transfer process from Ce3+ to Tb3+/Mn2+ has been demonstrated to be a resonant type via the dipole–dipole/quadrupole-quadrupole interaction mechanism, respectively. The emissive colors of LiSrPO4: Ce3+, Tb3+, Mn2+ samples can be adjusted from blue to green and from blue to red-orange by the energy transfer of Ce3+, Tb3+ and Ce3+, Mn2+, respectively. More importantly, white emission has been obtained through adjusting the relative concentrations of Ce3+, Tb3+ and Mn2+ ions in the LiSrPO4 host under UV. It is suggested the present phosphors can be potentially applied as a candidate of single-component white-light phosphor for UV-pumped w-LED.

Abstract:X-ray Excited Optical Luminescence (XEOL) from rare earth doped whitlockite phosphates and silicate garnets [Ca 9 La(PO 4 ) 7 and Ca 9 Lu(PO 4 ) 7 , doped with 1 mol% Ce 3+ ; Ca 3 Sc 2 Si 3 O 12, doped with 0.5 mol% Pr 3+ , 1 mol% Eu 3+ and 1 mol% Tb 3+ ], was obtained upon X-ray excitation with a tunable synchrotron light source. Excitation at photon energies across the M 5,4 -edge of the dopants reveals additional information not normally obtainable with conventional UV/visible or an X-ray line source (Al K α ). It is found that despite the low concentration, photoluminescence yields excited with photon energy at the M 5,4 -edge of the rare-earth dopant can positively and negatively affect the overall energy transfer to the optical center. The implication of these observations is discussed. The application of XEOL in the investigation of X-ray scintillators is illustrated.

Abstract:The Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped Sc2O3 nanoparticles were prepared by co-precipitation method. The phase structure and up-conversion properties were investigated using XRD, FESEM and up-conversion spectra. The nanoparticles with the size of about 40 rim emitted red and green light. Yb3+ ions are crucial to adjust the intensity proportion of red and green emission as a sensitizer. In Er3+, Yb3+ co-doping samples, the red emissions are much higher than green and the intensity ratio is up to 56.43, while the green to red intensity ratio is 11.21 with Era(3+) single doping, which both show excellent mono-chromaticity. Strong red emissions are attributed to the cross-relaxation energy transfer and energy back-transfer processes. High Yb3+ ions concentrations induce the red up-conversion saturation, resulting in a near linear laser power dependence, and it can be illustrated based on steady-state rate equations. Abstract:Uniform Lu2O3:Eu3+ nanorods and nanowires have been successfully prepared through a simple solution-based hydrothermal process followed by a subsequent calcination process without using any surfactant, catalyst, or template. On the basis of X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results, it can be assumed that the as-obtained precursors have the structure formula of Lu4O(OH)(9)(NO3), which is a new phase and has not been reported. The morphology of the precursors could be modulated from nanorods to nanowires with the increase of pH value using ammonia solution. The as-formed precursors could transform to cubic Lu2O3:Eu3+ with the same morphology and a slight shrinkage in size after an annealing process, Both the Lu2O3:Eu3+ nanorods and nanowires exhibit the strong red emission corresponding to the D-5(0)-F-7(2) transition of the Eu3+ ions under UV light excitation or low-voltage electron beam excitation.
Facile synthesis of monodisperse LuPO4:Eu3+/Tb3+ hollow nanospheres and their luminescence properties

Abstract:Highly uniform and well-dispersed LuPO4 hollow nanospheres were successfully synthesized via a facile solution-phase method by utilizing the colloidal spheres of Lu(OH)CO3 as a sacrificial template and NH4H2PO4 as a phosphorus source. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR), photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra were employed to characterize the samples. The result indicates that the hollow LuPO4 spheres can be indexed to the tetragonal phase. The hollow LuPO4 spheres with diameter of about 300 nm become larger with respect to the sacrificial template. The shell of the hollow microspheres consists of numerous nanorods with the thickness of approximately 10 nm. Moreover, the possible formation mechanism of the evolution from Lu(OH)CO3 spheres to the final hollow LuPO4 hollow spheres has been proposed. In addition, upom ultraviolet (UV) and low-voltage electron beams excitation, 5 mol% Eu3+ and 5 mol% Tb3+ doped LuPO4 samples exhibit strong orange-red and green emission, corresponding to the characteristic lines of Eu3+ and Tb3+ under UV excitation, respectively, which may find potential application in the fields of color display and biomedicine.

Abstract:Kinetic or thermodynamic control has been employed to guide the selective synthesis of conventional organic compounds, and it should be a powerful tool as well for accessing unusual inorganic nanocrystals, particularly when a series of members with similar chemical compositions and phase structures exist. Indeed, a comprehensive mapping of the energy barrier distribution of each nanocrystal in a predefined reaction system will enable not only the precise synthesis of nanocrystals with expected sizes, morphologies, phase structures, and ultimately functionalities, but also disclosure of the evolution details of nanocrystals from one structure to another. Using ScFx:Ln (x = 2.76, 3) series as a proof-of-concept, we have successfully mapped out the energy barriers that correspond to each of the ScFx:Ln nanocrystals, unraveled suitable temperatures for each type of nanocrystal formation, recorded their phase transition procedures, and also discovered the relationships of the products at each reaction stage. To testify how this approach allows one to tailor the structure-related optical properties, different lanthanide-doped ScFx nanocrystals were synthesized and a wide-range of luminescence fine-tuning was achieved, which not only showcases high quality of the nanocrystals, but also provides more candidates for various luminescence applications, especially when single-particle upconversion emission is required.

Abstract:Rare earth (La, Nd and Tb) oxides with one-dimensional micro/nanostructures were synthesized hydrothermally under facile and mild conditions with two surfactants, and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetry (TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence. The results showed that the synthesized rare earth oxides behaved regular nano- and micro-scale structures. And the morphologies of samples depended on the radii of rare earth ions, with the help of two surfactants of sodium dodecyl sulfonic and PEG 600. Nanocrystalline La2O3:Eu3+ possessed good photoluminescence (PL) property and might be used as a nanosized phosphor, its PL intensity was altered by the doping Eu3+ concentration and the optimum concentration of Eu3+ was 3 mol.%. In comparison with bulk Eu3+/La2O3, Eu3+/nano-La2O3 showed better photoluminescence property, nearly equal to that of nanocrtstalline La2O3:Eu3+. Tb4O7 microwires showed interesting photoluminescence properties.

Abstract:Rare-earth-based nanomaterials have recently drawn considerable attention because of their unique energy upconversion (UC) capabilities. However, studies of Sc3+-based nanomaterials are still absent. Herein we report the synthesis and fine control of NaxScF3+x nanocrystals by tuning of the ratio of oleic acid (OA, polar surfactant) to 1-octadecene (OD, nonpolar solvent). When the OA:OD ratio was increased from low (3:17) to high (3:7), the nanocrystals changed from pure monoclinic phase (Na3ScF6) to pure hexagonal phase (NaScF4) via a transition stage at an intermediate OA:OD ratio (3:9) where a mixture of nanocrystals in monoclinic and hexagonal phases was obtained and the coexistence of the two phases inside individual nanocrystals was also observed. More significantly, because of the small radius of Sc3+, NaxScF3+x:Yb/Er nanocrystals show different UC emission from that of NaYF4:Yb/Er nanocrystals, which broadens the applications of rare-earth-based nanomaterials ranging from optical communications to disease diagnosis.

Abstract:A significant advance made in combinatorial approach research was that the emphasis shifted from simple mixing to intelligent screening, so as to improve the efficiency and accuracy of discovering new materials from a larger number of diverse compositions. In this study, the long-lasting luminescence of SrAl(2)O(4), which is co-doped with Eu(2+), Ce(3+), Dy(3+), Li(+) and H(3)BO(3), was investigated based on a combinatorial approach in conjunction with the Taguchi method. The minimal number of 16 samples to be tested (five dopants and four levels of concentration) were designed using the Taguchi method. The samples to be screened were synthesized using a parallel combinatorial strategy based on ink-jetting of precursors into an array of micro-reactor wells. The relative brightness of luminescence of the different phosphors over a particular period was assessed. Ce(3+) was identified as the constituent that detrimentally affected long-lasting luminescence. Its concentration was optimized to zero. Li(+) had a minor effect on long-lasting luminescence but the main factors that contributed to the objective property (long-lasting luminescence) were Eu(2+), Dy(3+) and H(3)BO(3), and the concentrations of these dopants were optimized to 0.020, 0.030 and 0.300, respectively, for co-doping into SrAl(2)O(4). This study demonstrates that the utility of the combinatorial approach for evaluating the effect of components on an objective property (e.g. phosphorescence) and estimating the expected performance under the optimal conditions can be improved by the Taguchi method.
The improved scintillation performances and X-ray imaging of Lu2O3:Pr3+ nanoparticles induced by Sm3+ doping

Abstract:Lu2(1-x)Pr2x O3 nanoscintillators (x = 0.0005, 0.001, 0.0015, 0.003, 0.005) with excellent red emission and a response time of 185.7 μs were synthesized by a coprecipitation method. It is found that both photoluminescence and radioluminescence intensities show an initial rising and then decreasing trend with increasing Pr3+ concentration and the strongest intensity can be obtained at x = 0.001. By determining the average distance between Pr and O, the radiative transition processes from 3P0 and 1D2 to 3H4 and nonradiative transition process from 3P0 to 1D2 can be confirmed. Meanwhile, the afterglow level of Lu2O3:Pr3+ nanoscintillators with an average size of 112.3 nm was found to be 2190 ppm. Based on the spectral data and density functional theory calculations, the afterglow can be related to Pr L u · traps due to the presence of Pr4+ in Lu2O3:Pr. When Sm3+ ions were doped into Lu2O3:Pr3+, it is found that it leads to the decreased creation of Pr4+, the reduced afterglow level and the improved radioluminescence. By means of Lu2O3:Pr3+, Sm3+ nanoparticles being dispersed into polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) polymer, PMMA-Lu2O3:Pr3+, Sm3+ composite films with fast response time and radiation resistance were prepared by a rotating coating method. The static X-ray imaging with a spatial resolution of 5.5 lp/mm using the composite film as an imaging screen was realized at extremely low safe dose of 4.6 μ G y . Meanwhile, for the broken electric wire used as an object, the clear X-ray image can be observed. Our results suggest that Lu2O3:Pr3+, Sm3+ nanoscintillators have potential applications in medical imaging and nondestructive testing.

Abstract:A series of samarium (Sm) doped hydroxyapatite containing strontium (Sr) with controllable and adjustable luminescence were designed and prepared via chemical hydrolysis co-precipitation method. The effects of doping concentration of Sm on the structure, composition, photoluminescence (PL), energy transfer, substitute site, fluoresce lifetime and luminescence color of samples were investigated. It is shown that the introduction of Sr ions induced the structure and composition change for Sm doped samples. The typical transitions of Sm3+ at 564, 601, 648 and 707 nm due to 4G5/2→6HJ/2 (J=5, 7, 9 and 11) transition under the excitation of 404 nm are detected. The PL intensity is affected by the Sr/Ca ratio and Sm concentration, and the optimal concentration of Sm is 0.8 mol% when Sr/Ca ratio equals 7/3. The non-radiative transitions and energy transfer of Sm ions are the main reason for the quenching, and the interactions among ions are ascribed to dipole-dipole type by theoretical calculation. Besides, the ratio of PL intensity between 601 nm and 648 nm (rO/R =I601 nm/I648 nm) indicates the symmetry and substitution process of Sm ions to Ca/Sr ions. The fluorescence lifetime (τ) decreases as the concentration of Sm increasing, which is the result of the decrease of distance and enhancing the interaction between Sm ions. The CIE chromaticity coordinates and luminescence color of samples are in the orange-red region and have close relation with the concentration of Sm. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity evaluation and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) observation of samples via cells indicate the good biocompatibility and safe use of this kind of bio-based luminescent materials for their potential efficient fluorescence labeling and detection.The controllable and adjustable red luminescence, due to the typical transitions of Sm, is observed in Sm/Sr co-doped hydroxyapatite materials. The emissions are related to the concentration and symmetry of Sm3+ ions in the matrix, which indicate the dipole-dipole interactions among ions are the main reasons for the quenching and energy transfer of Sm ions. Abstract:X-ray luminescent nanoparticles have gained significant attention as promising tools for implementing multimodal imaging and radiation-based treatments in theragnostics. The intricate comprehension of their properties and the underlying mechanisms driving the conversion of X-rays into light is critical for their success in various applications. LaPO 4 nanoparticles doped with various individual luminescence centers, gadolinium (Gd 3+ ), europium (Eu 3+ ), dysprosium (Dy 3+ ), and terbium (Tb 3+ ), were produced via co-precipitation and investigated for their behavior upon X-ray excitation using energies of up to 225 kV. These materials evidenced a radioluminescent response dependent on the dopant concentrations, with emission lines from 300 to 700 nm, providing insights into the luminescence quenching effect in these structures. The luminescent characteristics of the nanoparticles were studied under continuous irradiation, evidencing the materials' ability to withstand high absorbed doses and preserve their properties. Furthermore, the influence of dopant concentrations on crystallite size and the dependence of luminescence on thermal treatments was investigated. The assessment of nanoparticle stability in aqueous suspension was evaluated over a broad pH range, revealing a tendency of the LaPO 4 surface to selectively interact with electropositive species. This insight enhances our comprehension of the colloidal stability of the material, positioning it for extended applications and in vitro evaluations, along with further surface functionalization.

Abstract:Series of Eu3+/Mn4+/Yb3+-doped SrLa2Sc2O7:Bi3+ (SLSO: Bi3+) were synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state method, and the energy transfer of Bi3+→Eu3+/Mn4+/Yb3+ was observed. Under ultraviolet radiation, a 550 nm emission peak was observed, which is attributed to Bi3+ occupying the Sr2+/La3+ sites. Additionally, the other peaks were found to be 615, 707, and 980 nm, which are assigned to the Re3+ (Eu3+ and Yb3+) and Mn4+ occupying two different cationic sites. An obvious energy transfer (ET) from Bi3+ to Eu3+/Mn4+/Yb3+ was observed, and the tunable color, emitting from yellow to red, was obtained; the ET efficiency was about 86.2%, 78.6%, and 27.5% in SLSO, respectively. We found that the large overlap area between the emission spectrum of the sensitizer and the excitation spectrum of the activator could produce efficient energy transfer, which provided the idea for designing experiments in the future for some highly efficient energy transfer processes.
