Abstract:The molecular dynamics process is investigated in this paper using a broadband fs time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) technique. By varying the timing of laser pulses, low vibrational states are started and studied on both the electronically excited B(3Π0u+) state and ground X(1Σ0g+) state of iodine in the gas phase at room temperature. According to change the pump wavelength or Stokes pulse as well as the wavelength of the detection window for the CARS signal, dynamics on different potential-energy surfaces can be accessed and detected by the CARS spectroscopy. Results show that the period of the oscillation is decreased for the excited B(3Π0u+) state as the wavelength of the pump pulses is increased, while it is increased for the ground X(1Σ0g+) state with the increase of the Stokes wavelength.

Abstract:Time-resolved resonance-enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) is applied to investigate molecular dynamics in gaseous iodine. 40 fs laser pulses are applied to create and monitor the high vibrational states of iodine at room temperature (corresponding to a vapor pressure as low as about 35 Pa) by femtosecond time-resolved CARS. Depending on the time delay between the probe pulse and the pump/Stokes pulse pairs, the high vibrational states both on the electronically ground states and the excited states can be detected as oscillations in the CARS transient signal. It is proved that the femtosecond time-resolved CARS technique is a promising candidate for investigating the molecular dynamics of a low concentration system and can be applied to environmental and atmospheric monitoring measurements.
Quantitative time-resolved buildup in coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering

Abstract:Since its first demonstration in the sixties, coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) has become a powerful spectroscopic sensing tool with broad applications in biology and chemistry. However, it is a complex nonlinear optical process that often leads to the lacks of quantitative data outputs. In this letter, we observe how CARS signal builds up gradually and demonstrate how to control its deferral with laser-pulse shaping. A time-resolved three-color CARS that involves a pair of driving broadband femtosecond pulses and delayed shaped probe pulse is realized experimentally. Driving pulses are tuned to the Raman-resonance onto the vibrational ring modes of pyridine and benzene molecules. As a result, CARS-buildup is deferred in picoseconds as delayed probe pulse width varies from 50 down to 10 cm-1. With off-resonant driving of water molecules this effect, in contrary, does not occur. Laser control predicting deferred resonant processes can serve as a novel and important species-specific indicator in, e.g., machine learning applications for future nonlinear optical spectroscopy.

Abstract:Time‐resolved coherent anti‐Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) impulsively excited by a supercontinuum (SC) is investigated. We show that it is critical to optimize the temporal overlapping of the constituent solitons of a SC in order to impulsively excite vibrational modes over a broad frequency range. The cross‐correlation frequency‐resolved optical gating technique is utilized to retrieve the optical response function of molecules under SC impulsive excitation, and background‐free CARS with spectral resolution significantly better than the bandwidth of the probe pulses is achieved. Abstract:The coherence and dephasing of vibrational motions of molecules constitute an integral part of chemical dynamics, influence material properties and underpin schemes to control chemical reactions. Considerable progress has been made in understanding vibrational coherence through spectroscopic measurements, but precise, direct measurement of the structure of a vibrating excited-state polyatomic organic molecule has remained unworkable. Here, we measure the time-evolving molecular structure of optically excited N-methylmorpholine through scattering with ultrashort X-ray pulses. The scattering signals are corrected for the differences in electron density in the excited electronic state of the molecule in comparison to the ground state. The experiment maps the evolution of the molecular geometry with femtosecond resolution, showing coherent motion that survives electronic relaxation and seems to persist for longer than previously seen using other methods.

Abstract:Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectroscopy with time-delayed ultrashort pulses and a single-pixel photodetector has shown great potential for spectroscopic imaging and transient studies in chemistry and biological research. However, those systems rely on mechanical delay lines or two asynchronous optical combs with inflexible repetition frequencies, technically limiting their acquisition speeds. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid dual-comb CARS system involving a broadband fiber laser and a highly-flexible, frequency-modulated electro-optic comb. We achieve multiplex CARS spectra (2800-3200 cm-1), with a moderate resolution (22 cm-1), at a maximum refresh rate of 1 MHz, limited by the radio-frequency synthesizer we use. Fast spectroscopic CARS imaging is demonstrated for liquid mixtures. Our system enables spectral measurements in the high-wavenumber C-H stretching region at a record speed that is an order of magnitude higher than state-of-the-art systems, which may open up new opportunities for fast chemical sensing and imaging.

Abstract:Understanding conical intersection (CI) dynamics and subsequent conformational changes is key for exploring and controlling photo-reactions in aromatic molecules. Monitoring of their time-resolved dynamics remains a formidable experimental challenge. In this study, we simulate the photoinduced S3 to S1 non-adiabatic dynamics of cyclooctatetraene (COT), involving multiple CIs with relaxation times in good agreement with experiment. We further investigate the possibility to directly probe the CI passages in COT by off-resonant X-ray Raman spectroscopy (TRUECARS) and time-resolved X-ray diffraction (TRXD). We find that these signals sensitively monitor key chemical features during the ultrafast dynamics. First, we distinguish two CIs by using TRUECARS signals with their appearances at different Raman shifts. Second, we demonstrate that TRXD, where X-ray photons scatter off electron densities, can resolve ultrafast changes in the aromaticity of COT. It can further distinguish between planar and non-planar geometries explored during the dynamics, as e.g. two different tetraradical-type CIs. The knowledge gained from these measurements can give unique insight into fundamental chemical properties that dynamically change during non-adiabatic passages.

Abstract:Abstract The motion of atoms is at the heart of any chemical or structural transformation in molecules and materials. Upon activation of this motion by an external source, several (usually many) vibrational modes can be coherently coupled, thus facilitating the chemical or structural phase transformation. These coherent dynamics occur on the ultrafast timescale, as revealed, e.g., by nonlocal ultrafast vibrational spectroscopic measurements in bulk molecular ensembles and solids. Tracking and controlling vibrational coherences locally at the atomic and molecular scales is, however, much more challenging and in fact has remained elusive so far. Here, we demonstrate that the vibrational coherences induced by broadband laser pulses on a single graphene nanoribbon (GNR) can be probed by femtosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) when performed in a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). In addition to determining dephasing (~440 fs) and population decay times (~1.8 ps) of the generated phonon wave packets, we are able to track and control the corresponding quantum coherences, which we show to evolve on time scales as short as ~70 fs. We demonstrate that a two-dimensional frequency correlation spectrum unequivocally reveals the quantum couplings between different phonon modes in the GNR.

Abstract:We have achieved rapid nonlinear vibrational imaging free of nonresonant background with heterodyne coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) interferometric microscopy. This technique completely separates the real and imaginary responses of nonlinear susceptibility chi(3) and yields a signal that is linear in the concentration of vibrational modes. We show that heterodyne CARS microscopy permits the detection of weak vibrational resonances that are otherwise overshadowed by the strong interference of the nonresonant background.

Abstract:Coherent anti-Stokes Raman microscopy (CARS) is a quantitative, chemically specific, and label-free optical imaging technique for studying inhomogeneous systems. However, the complicating influence of the nonresonant response on the CARS signal severely limits its sensitivity and specificity and especially limits the extent to which CARS microscopy has been used as a fully quantitative imaging technique. On the basis of spectral focusing mechanism, we establish a dual-soliton Stokes based CARS microspectroscopy and microscopy scheme capable of quantifying the spatial information of densities and chemical composition within inhomogeneous samples, using a single fiber laser. Dual-soliton Stokes scheme not only removes the nonresonant background but also allows robust acquisition of multiple characteristic vibrational frequencies. This all-fiber based laser source can cover the entire fingerprint (800-2200 cm-1) region with a spectral resolution of 15 cm-1. We demonstrate that quantitative degree determination of lipid-chain unsaturation in the fatty acids mixture can be achieved by the characterization of C = C stretching and CH2 deformation vibrations. For microscopy purposes, we show that the spatially inhomogeneous distribution of lipid droplets can be further quantitatively visualized using this quantified degree of lipid unsaturation in the acyl chain for contrast in the hyperspectral CARS images. The combination of compact excitation source and background-free capability to facilitate extraction of quantitative composition information with multiplex spectral peaks will enable wider applications of quantitative chemical imaging in studying biological and material systems.

Abstract:Optical pulses are routinely used to drive dynamical changes in the properties of solids. In quantum materials, many new phenomena have been discovered, including ultrafast transitions between electronic phases, switching of ferroic orders and nonequilibrium emergent behaviors such as photo-induced superconductivity. Understanding the underlying non-equilibrium physics requires detailed measurements of multiple microscopic degrees of freedom at ultrafast time resolution. Femtosecond x-rays are key to this endeavor, as they can access the dynamics of structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. Here, we cover a series of representative experimental studies in which ultrashort x-ray pulses from free electron lasers have been used, opening up new horizons for materials research.

Ultrafast X-ray Diffraction Probe of Coherent Spin-state Dynamics in Molecules

Abstract:We propose an approach to probe coherent spin-state dynamics of molecules using circularly polarized hard x-ray pulses. For the dynamically aligned nitric oxide molecules in a coherent superposition spin-orbit coupled electronic state that can be prepared through stimulated Raman scattering, we demonstrate the capability of ultrafast x-ray diffraction to not only reveal the quantum beating of the coherent spin-state wave packet, but also image the spatial spin density of the molecule. With circularly polarized ultrafast x-ray diffraction signal, we show that the electronic density matrix can be retrieved. The spatio-temporal resolving power of ultrafast x-ray diffraction paves the way for tracking transient spatial wave function in molecular dynamics involving spin degree of freedom.

Investigation on the vibrational relaxation and ultrafast electronic dynamics of S1 state in 2,4-difluoroanisole

Abstract:Intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) has a profound impact on dynamic processes. We have studied two types of IVR processes, restricted and dissipative, and ultrafast dynamics of the S1 state of 2,4-difluoroanisole using time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. The restricted IVR occurs in the intermediate regime of 219 cm-1 vibrational level, and the dissipative IVR occurs in the statistical regime of 1200 cm-1. The lifetimes of IVR processes are measured to be 90 and 11 ps, respectively, depending on the internal energies of the S1 state and differ by a factor of eight. Similar subsequent dynamics were observed at two vibrational levels in the S1 state. The population undergoes IVR following the initial excitation and subsequently leaks into a triplet state, accompanied by intersystem crossing within ∼400 ps followed by a slower nonradiative relaxation of the triplet state on the nanosecond time scale. Furthermore, the values of 3s and 3px Rydberg states of 2,4-difluoroanisole were experimentally determined to be 5.02 and 6.28 eV.

Abstract:Real-time visualization of molecular transformations is a captivating yet challenging frontier of ultrafast optical science and physical chemistry. While ultrafast x-ray and electron diffraction methods can achieve the needed subangstrom spatial resolution, their temporal resolution is still limited to hundreds of femtoseconds, much longer than the few femtoseconds required to probe real-time molecular dynamics. Here, we show that high-order harmonics generated by intense femtosecond lasers can be used to image molecules with few-ten-attosecond temporal resolution and few-picometer spatial resolution. This is achieved by exploiting the sensitive dependence of molecular recombination dipole moment to the geometry of the molecule at the time of harmonic emission. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we have applied this high-harmonic structure imaging (HHSI) method to monitor the structural rearrangement in NH_{3}, ND_{3}, and N_{2} from one to a few femtoseconds after the molecule is ionized by an intense laser. Our findings establish HHSI as an effective approach to resolve molecular dynamics with unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution, which can be extended to trace photochemical reactions in the future.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 1-kHz, single-shot, dynamic, and sensitive flame temperature measurement using hybrid femtosecond/picosecond vibrational coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering. This benefits from a 7-cm−1, 240-μJ, and sideband-free picosecond pulse out of a broadband 35-fs pulse through a quasi-common-path second harmonic bandwidth compressor system. Measurements around optimal time delay exhibit superior performance with a temperature inaccuracy of less than 1% and a precision of ∼2% at 1790 K. These results demonstrate the advantages and potential for the accurate and fast temperature measurement in practical or harsh environments.

Abstract:The requirement of high space-time resolution and brightness is a great challenge for imaging atomic motion and making molecular movies. Important breakthroughs in ultrabright tabletop laser, X-ray, and electron sources have enabled the direct imaging of evolving molecular structures in chemical processes, and recent experimental advances in preparing ultrafast laser and electron pulses resulted in molecular imaging with femtosecond time resolution. This Perspective presents an overview of the versatile imaging methods of molecular dynamics. High-order harmonic generation imaging and photoelectron diffraction imaging are based on laser-induced ionization and rescattering processes. Coulomb explosion imaging retrieves molecular structural information by detecting the momentum vectors of fragmented ions. Diffraction imaging encodes molecular structural and electronic information in reciprocal space. We also present various applications of these ultrafast imaging methods in resolving laser-induced nuclear and electronic dynamics.

Abstract:A new method, femtosecond time-resolved stimulated emission pumping fluorescence depletion (FS TR SEP FD), has been developed to study the vibrational relaxation of electronic excited states of molecules. Two relaxation rates of dye molecules in different solvents have been observed: (i) the intramolecular redistribution of energy, with a short time constant of less than 500 fs; (ii) the subsequent cooling of the vibrationally hot molecules on the picosecond time scale. The rates of these processes strongly depend on the solvent. This may result from a solvent-induced structural modification of the dye molecules.
