Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy（SERS）, a powerful surface vibrational spectroscopic technique, is ideally suited for in situ monitoring the chemical transformations occurred at surfaces and/or interfaces.For in situ SERS monitoring, a platform integrated both plasmonic and catalytic activity is a prerequisite. Here, we fabricate a bifunctional Au-Pd nanocoronal film for in situ SERS monitoring Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. This excellent bifunctional substrate leads to the coupling of high catalytic activity with a strong SERS effect at the center of two adjacent Au cores and shows fine reproducibility and stability of SERS signals. During investigating the Suzuki reaction with in situ SERS, we found two distinct catalytic kinetic processes resulted from two disparate catalytic sites on a Au-Pd nanocoronal. Comparing with conventional analytical techniques, this work provides a novel approach for studying Suzuki reactions at surfaces and/or interfaces with in situ SERS.

Abstract:A novel nanosensor was explored for the highly selective detection of intracellular carbon monoxide (CO) by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) on the basis of palladacycle carbonylation. By assembling new synthesized palladacycles (PC) on the surface of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), SERS nanosensors (AuNP/PC) were prepared with good SERS activity and reactivity with CO. When the AuNP/PC nanosensors were incubated with a CO-containing system, carbonylation of the PC assembled on AuNPs was initiated, and the corresponding SERS spectra of AuNP/PC changed significantly, which allowed the carbonylation reaction to be directly observed in situ. Upon SERS observation of CO-dependent carbonylation, this SERS nanosensor was used for the detection of CO under physiological conditions. Moreover, benefiting from the specificity of the reaction coupled with the fingerprinting feature of SERS, the developed nanosensor demonstrated high selectivity over other biologically relevant species. In vivo studies further indicated that CO in normal human liver cells and HeLa cells at concentrations as low as 0.5 μM were successfully detected with the proposed SERS strategy, demonstrating its great promise for the analytical requirements in studies of physiopathological events involved with CO.

Abstract:Owing to the heterogeneous electromagnetic fields in hot spots, free movement of analytes near hot spots, weak adsorption or nonadsorption of molecules, among other factors, the enhancement of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signals cannot be well manipulated; thus, highly sensitive detection of many molecules with weak Raman scatter peculiarity cannot be accomplished. A simple and reliable method is described to prepare the beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) adsorption layers, coated on the surface of beta-CD-capped Au nanoparticles (NPs) so that various analytes can be driven and attached to the Au NPs, thus positioning the analytes at specific hot spots to enhance the electromagnetic field. Based on the beta-CD adsorption layers, SERS enrichment measures are not only improved on the solid substrate by combining the functions of molecule adsorption and molecule interception but also increased in solution via integrating the effects of molecule adsorption and molecule anchoring. Various types of molecular enrichment effects are effectively incorporated, thereby significantly enhancing the SERS intensity by 2-3 orders of magnitude both on the substrate and in the solution. Therefore, the proposed method contributes to stimulating the active transport of target molecules to optimal hot spots to achieve ultrasensitive detection, expanding the practical applications for both substrate-based and solution-based SERS protocols.

Abstract:In 1997, the discovery of single molecule-surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SM-SERS) rekindled broad interests owing to its ultrahigh enhancement factor up to the 1014-1015 level. However, regretfully, the advantage of SM-SERS with an ultralow detection limit has not yet been fully utilized in commercialized applications. Here, we report a strategy, which we name confined-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, in which the overall Raman properties can be remarkably improved with in situ-formed active nanoshell on the surface of silver or gold nanoparticles. The nanoshell can confine and anchor molecules onto the surface of plasmonic nanoparticles and avoid desorption from hot spots so that the "on and off"blinking effect can be eliminated. It is the first time the single-molecule detection of analytes with super sensitivity, high stability, and reproducibility based on gold nanoparticles has been realized. In addition, this strategy is suitable for SERS detection in diverse molecule systems, including biomedical diagnosis, catalytic reaction, etc.

Abstract:Understanding the molecular orientation is crucial for revealing the mechanism of chemical reactions. However, how to accurately monitor the molecular orientation remains a great challenge because of the motion of the molecules during the chemical reaction. Here, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was used to monitor the molecular reorientation from the plasmon-catalyzed conversion of p-aminothiophenol (PATP) to p,p'-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB). Spectral change due to molecular reorientation, which is often overlooked, is clearly extracted through the protonation of the PATP molecules to suppress the conversion of PATP to DMAB. Meanwhile, by monitoring the Raman features, the reaction process and molecular reorientation are simultaneously recorded, offering fresh insights on the long-standing puzzle that why the conversion to DMAB is suppressed with concentrated PATP: this is because the over-crowded PATP adsorbed on the substrate hampered its own space-taking reorientation (similar to the space-steric effect) which is a prerequisite for producing DMAB.

Abstract:The implementation of plasmonic materials in heterogeneous catalysis was limited due to the lack of experimental access in managing the plasmonic hot carriers. Herein, we propose a liquid-state surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique to manipulate and visualize heterogeneous photocatalysis with transparent plasmonic chips. The liquid-state measurement conquers the difficulties that arise from the plasmon-induced thermal effects, and thus the plasmon based strategies can be extended to investigate a wider range of catalytic reactions. We demonstrated the selection of reaction products by modulating the plasmonic hot carriers and explored the mechanisms in several typical C-C coupling reactions with 4-bromothiophenol (4-BTP) as reactants. The real-time experimental results suggest brand new mechanisms of the formation of C-C bonds on plasmonic metal nanoparticles (NPs): the residue of 4-BTP, but not thiophenol (TP), is responsible for the C-C coupling. Furthermore, this technique was extended to study the evolution of the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction on nonplasmonic palladium metals by establishing the charge transfer channels between palladium and Au NPs. The cleavage and formation of chemical bonds in each individual reaction step were discerned, and the corresponding working mechanisms were clarified.

Abstract:Although surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has proven to be an effective tool for label-free monitoring of catalytic reactions, quantitative characterization of reaction kinetics via this technique remains challenging owing to the difficulty in integrating catalytic and plasmonic activities into a single platform. In this work, we report on an easy access to highly sensitive plasmonic nanoarrays for direct and label-free monitoring of a gold-catalyzed reaction by SERS. The hierarchically structured three-dimensional assemblies, which consist of small gold catalyst nanoparticles distributed on a self-assembled monolayer of larger gold nanoparticles, were formed through a simple and rapid stepwise interfacial self-assembling process (fabrication time <10 min). The well-defined interparticle distances (<1 nm) lead to efficient plasmonic coupling and ensure both catalytic and SERS-active sites exposed to the environment. Such a versatile bifunctional platform thus allows quantitative determination of the rate constant and activation energy of the catalytic reaction with SERS.
Visualization of Electrooxidation on Palladium Single Crystal Surfaces via In Situ Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract:The electrooxidation of catalyst surfaces is across various electrocatalytic reactions, directly impacting their activity, stability and selectivity. Precisely characterizing the electrooxidation on well-defined surfaces is essential to understanding electrocatalytic reactions comprehensively. Herein, we employed in situ Raman spectroscopy to monitor the electrooxidation process of palladium single crystal. Our findings reveal that the Pd surface's initial electrooxidation process involves forming *OH intermediate and ClO4- ions facilitate the deprotonation process, leading to the formation of PdOx. Subsequently, under deep electrooxidation potential range, the oxygen atoms within PdOx contribute to creating surface-bound peroxide species, ultimately resulting in oxygen generation. The adsorption strength of *OH and the coverage of ClO4- can be adjusted by the controllable electronic effect, resulting in different oxidation rates. This study offers valuable insights into elucidating the electrooxidation mechanisms underlying a range of electrocatalytic reactions, thereby contributing to the rational design of catalysts.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful analytical technique renowned for its ultra-high sensitivity. Extensive research in SERS has led to the development of a wide range of SERS substrates, including plasmonic metals, semiconductors, metal organic frameworks, and their assemblies. Some of these materials are also excellent photocatalysts, and by taking advantage of their bifunctional characteristics, the photocatalytic processes that occur on their surface can be monitored in situ via SERS. This provides us with unique opportunities to gain valuable insights into the intricate details of the photocatalytic processes that are challenging to access using other techniques. In this review, we highlight key development in in situ and/or real-time SERS-tracking of photocatalytic reactions. We begin by providing a brief account of recent developments in SERS substrates, followed by discussions on how SERS can be used to elucidate crucial aspects of photocatalytic processes, including: (1) the influence of the surrounding media on charge carrier extraction; (2) the direction of charge carrier transfer; (3) the pathway of photocatalytic activation; and (4) differentiation between the effects of photo-thermal and energetic electrons. Additionally, we discuss the benefits of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) due to the ability to achieve high-spatial-resolution measurements. Finally, we address major challenges and propose potential directions for the future of SERS monitoring of photocatalytic reactions. By leveraging the capabilities of SERS, we can uncover new insights into photocatalytic processes, paving the way for advancements in sustainable energy and environmental remediation.

Ratiometric Sensing of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Using Capturing Ligand Functionalized Mesoporous Au Nanoparticles As a Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrate.

Abstract:The absorption behavior between plasmonic nanostructures and a target molecule plays key roles in effective surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection. However, for analytes with low surface affinity to the metallic surface, e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), it remains challenging to observe the enhanced Raman signal. In this work, we reported a ratiometric SERS strategy for sensitive PAH detection through the surface functionalization of 3D ordered mesoporous Au nanoparticles (meso-Au NPs). By employing mono-6-thio-β-cyclodextrin (HS-β-CD) as capture ligands, the hydrophobic molecules, e.g., anthracene, could be effectively absorbed on the meso-Au NP surface via a host-guest interaction. Besides, a hydrophobic slippery surface is used as a concentrator to deliver and enrich the Au/analyte droplets into a small area. Consequently, the detection limits of anthracene and naphthalene are down to 1 and 10 ppb. The improved SERS enhancement is mainly ascribed to the host-guest effect of HS-β-CD ligands, large surface area and high-density of sub-10 nm mesopores of Au networks, as well as the enrichment effect of hydrophobic slippery surface. Moreover, the HS-β-CD (480 cm-1 band) could serve as an internal standard, leading to the ratiometric determination of anthracene ranging from 1 ppm to 1 ppb. The proposed surface modification strategy in combination with the hydrophobic slippery surface shows great potential for active capture and trace detection of persistent organic pollutants in real-world SERS applications.

Abstract:In-situ Raman spectroscopy provides a new approach to investigate the photochemical reactions as well as related mechanisms by combining the dual functions of the excitation and in-situ study of chemical reactions.Integrating with our research results,this review summarizes recent advances in laser-induced chemical reactions investigated by in-situ Raman spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS).Firstly,the progress of in-situ SERS study of the surface plasmon (SP)-mediated catalytic reactions is systematically reviewed,where the discovery and development of SP-induced coupling reactions are emphatically introduced.Then,the-state-of-the-art laser-induced chemical reactions monitoring by in-situ Raman spectroscopy is presented.Finally,the problems existing in in-situ Raman spectroscopy study of laser-induced chemical reactions are discussed and the future development is prospected.

Abstract:<p>Alloy and small size nanostructures are favorable to catalytical performance, but not to surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) applications. Integrating SERS and catalytic activity into the nanocrystals with both alloy and small size structures is of great interest in fabrication of SERS platform to in situ monitor catalytical reaction. Herein, we report a facile method to synthesize trimetallic nanoflowers ( NFs) with both SERS and catalytic activities, through simultaneous selective growth of Ag and Pd on Au core to form highly-branched alloy shell. These nanocrystals have the properties of small sizes, defects abundance, and highly-dispersed alloy shell which offer superior catalytic activity, while the merits of monodisperse, excellent stability, and highly-branched shell and core/alloy-shell structure promise the enhanced SERS activity. We further studied their growth mechanisms, and found that the ratio of Ag to Pd, sizes of Au core, and surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide together determine this special structure. Using this as-synthesized nanocrystals, a monolayer bifunctional platform with both SERS and catalytical activity was fabricated through self-assembly at air/water interface, and applied to in situ SERS monitoring the reaction process of Pd-catalyzed hydrogenation of 4-nitrothiophenol to 4-aminothiophenol.</p>

Abstract:Electrochemistry and heterogeneous catalysis continue to attract enormous interest. In situ surface analysis is a dynamic research field capable of elucidating the catalytic mechanisms of reaction processes. Shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) is a nondestructive technique that has been cumulatively used to probe and analyze catalytic-reaction processes, providing important spectral evidence about reaction intermediates produced on catalyst surfaces. In this perspective, we review recent electrochemical- and heterogeneous-catalysis studies using SHINERS, highlight its advantages, summarize the flaws and prospects for improving the SHINERS technique, and give insight into its future research directions.

Abstract:Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) spectroscopy has become one of the most widely pursued spectroscopic tools, as a powerful and extremely sensitive analytical technique with applications in chemical production, biochemistry, and environmental monitoring, owing to its production of unique spectroscopic fingerprints, high sensitivity, and non-destructive data acquisition. The key obstacle for the application of SERS-based sensors is the lack of robust and simple fabrication strategies for renewable SERS substrates with huge and stable Raman enhancement. The rational design of SERS sensors with defined physical and chemical properties is vital for successful applications in many analytical fields. This highlight will summarize current advances in the design and the employment of nanostructured materials in SERS substrates, especially from the dimensional point of view. We will then talk about synthesis methods and the novel properties of these nanostructured materials with their potential applications in SERS.

Abstract:Physicochemical phenomena at the polymer-metal interface have been observed by the use of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). SERS spectra are compared with the infra-red reflection-absorption spectra for coatings of polymer on metals. Results show that SERS is an effective in situ analytical technique which is highly informative in that the authentic adsorption state and the microstructure of the first monolayer near the metal surface can be revealed with much less interference from the polymer bulk.
