Abstract:The current retrieval method of sea wind speeds using a space-borne laser device is based on the received energies, which are significantly influenced by the absorption and scatter effect in the atmosphere. A new method is derived to retrieve the wind speed by the path of waveform width-root mean square (RMS) surface height-wind speed, which differs from the classical path of received energy-mean sea slope-wind speed. First, by deriving a more rigorous expression of the waveform model of an ocean surface for a laser altimeter, the theoretical relationship between the surface height RMS and waveform width is established. Second, the surface height RMS is fitted to a new empirical formula that is related to the wind speed using the geoscience laser altimeter system(GLAS) waveform data and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction wind speeds. Then, the JONSWAP spectra with swell effect and the waveform simulator are used to generate sea surface profiles and echowave-forms to verify the new retrieval method. Finally, in a Pacific region by using GLAS waveform data, the retrieval results indicate that the bias was approximately 0.2 m/s, the RMSE was approximately 1.2 m/s, and the ratio of valid data exceeded 20%.

Abstract:Global satellite observations of lidar backscatter measurements acquired by the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) mission and collocated sea surface wind speed data from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E), are used to investigate the relation between wind driven wave slope variance and sea surface wind speed. The new slope variance – wind speed relation established from this study is similar to the linear relation from Cox-Munk (1954) and the log-linear relation from Wu (1990) for wind speed larger than 7 m/s and 13.3 m/s, respectively. For wind speed less than 7 m/s, the slope variance is proportional to the square root of the wind speed, assuming a two dimensional isotropic Gaussian wave slope distribution. This slope variance – wind speed relation becomes linear if a one dimensional Gaussian wave slope distribution and linear slope variance – wind speed relation are assumed. Contributions from whitecaps and subsurface backscattering are effectively removed by using 532 nm lidar depolarization measurements. This new slope variance – wind speed relation is used to derive sea surface wind speed from CALIPSO single shot lidar measurements (70 m spot size), after correcting for atmospheric attenuation. The CALIPSO wind speed result agrees with the collocated AMSR-E wind speed, with 1.2 m/s rms error. Ocean surface with lowest atmospheric loading and moderate wind speed (7–9 m/s) is used as target for lidar calibration correction.

Abstract:The primary objective of the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) mission is to study the climate impact of clouds and aerosols in the atmosphere. However, recent studies have demonstrated that CALIPSO also collects information about the ocean subsurface. The objective of this study is to estimate the ocean subsurface backscatter from CALIPSO lidar measurements. The effects of the lidar receiver's transient response on the attenuated backscatter were first removed in order to obtain the correct attenuated backscatter profile. The empirical relationship between sea surface lidar backscatter and wind speed was used to estimate the theoretical ocean surface backscatter. Then the two-way atmospheric transmittance was estimated as the ratio between the corrected ocean surface backscatter and the theoretical one. The ocean subsurface backscatter was finally derived from the subsurface attenuated backscatter divided by the two-way atmospheric transmittance. Significant relationships between integrated subsurface backscatter and chlorophyll-a concentration and between integrated subsurface backscatter and particulate organic carbon were found, which indicate a potential use of CALIPSO lidar to estimate global chlorophyll-a and particulate organic carbon concentrations.

Abstract:Processes and strengths of the ocean's biological carbon pump are significant to the study of ocean carbon cycle. However, the development and the utilization of the ocean's biological carbon pump are greatly limited because of human's limited knowledge of the ocean. Remote sensing methods have played important roles in understanding and exploring the ocean, and the lidar is one of the most outstanding representatives for its high spatial and temporal resolution, especially the ability of the vertical detection. High-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) employs an ultra-narrow spectral filter to separate scattering signals between particles and water molecules without assuming a lidar ratio, and obtains the optical properties of the ocean with a high accuracy. Nevertheless, the complexity of the seawater causes variable optical properties, which gives huge potentiality to develop the HSRL working at different wavelengths in order to promote the inversion accuracy and increase the detection depth. The field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI), whose central transmittance can be tuned to any wavelength, can be employed as the HSRL spectral filter and solve the problem that the operating wavelength of the iodine filter cannot change. Moreover, the FWMI has a very large field of view, which gives its superiority over Fabry-Perot interferometer that is an another popular HSRL filter. The principle of the HSRL based on the FWMI designing for the ocean remote sensing will be presented in detail. Furthermore, the availability of the application of the FWMI influenced by the disturbance of the states of Brillouin scattering is analyzed and the preliminary theory shows that the HSRL instrument basing on FWMI could be employed in the marine remote sensing with a high accuracy.

Abstract:A neural network nonlinear regression algorithm is developed for retrieving ocean surface wind speed from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) lidar measurements. The neural network is trained with CALIPSO ocean surface and atmospheric backscatter measurements together with collocated Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSR-E) ocean surface wind speed. Ocean surface wind speeds are derived by applying the neural network algorithm to CALIPSO measurements between 2008 and 2020. CALIPSO wind speed measurements of 2015 are also compared with Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR-2) measurements on the Global Change Observation Mission–Water “Shizuku” (GCOM-W) satellite. Aerosol optical depths are then derived from CALIPSO’s ocean surface backscatter signal and theoretical ocean surface reflectance calculated from CALIPSO wind speed and Cox-Munk wind–surface slope variance relation. This CALIPSO wind speed retrieval technique is an improvement from our previous studies, as it can be applied to most clear skies with optical depths up to 1.5 without making assumptions about aerosol lidar ratio.

Abstract:In shallow nearshore waters, seafloor heights and properties can be accurately measured by the current generation of space-based elastic backscatter lidars: CALIOP, flying aboard the CALIPSO satellite and ATLAS aboard ICESat-2. CALIOP's 532 nm volume depolarization ratios, together with the ratios of the attenuated backscatter coefficients measured at 532 nm and 1064 nm, can efficiently distinguish optically shallow waters from nearby land surfaces and deep oceans. ATLAS's high vertical resolution photon measurements can accurately determine seafloor depths in shallow water bodies, characterize seafloor reflectance, and provide assessments of ocean biomass concentrations in the intervening water column. By adding bathymetry, seafloor optical properties (e.g., reflectance, depolarization ratio and attenuated backscatter), and nighttime observations, space lidar measurements obtained in nearshore waters can provide a wealth of unique information to complement existing satellite-based ocean color remote sensing capabilities. The results reported here demonstrate the feasibility of using satellite lidars for nearshore seafloor ecosystem analyses, which in turn provide critical insights for studies of coastal navigation and seabed topography changes due to disasters, as well as the temporal and spatial morphological evolution of coastal systems.

Abstract:A new approach has been proposed to determine ocean subsurface particulate backscattering coefficient bbp from CALIOP 30° off-nadir lidar measurements. The new method also provides estimates of the particle volume scattering function at the 180° scattering angle. The CALIOP based layer-integrated lidar backscatter and particulate backscattering coefficients are compared with the results obtained from MODIS ocean color measurements. The comparison analysis shows that ocean subsurface lidar backscatter and particulate backscattering coefficient bbp can be accurately obtained from CALIOP lidar measurements, thereby supporting the use of space-borne lidar measurements for ocean subsurface studies.

Abstract:A method for ocean subsurface particulate backscatter estimation from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) on the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) satellite was demonstrated. The effects of the CALIOP receiver's transient response on the attenuated backscatter profile were first removed. The two-way transmittance of the overlying atmosphere was then estimated as the ratio of the measured ocean surface attenuated backscatter to the theoretical value computed from wind driven wave slope variance. Finally, particulate backscatter was estimated from the depolarization ratio as the ratio of the column-integrated cross-polarized and co-polarized channels. Statistical results show that the derived particulate backscatter by the method based on CALIOP data agree reasonably well with chlorophyll-a concentration using MODIS data. It indicates a potential use of space-borne lidar to estimate global primary productivity and particulate carbon stock.
Model of Sea Surface Echos from Spaceborne Single Photon Lidar

Abstract:Over the past few decades, the development of lidars has great significance for ocean monitoring. The spaceborne single photon lidar shows its advantage in marine remote sensing because of high resolution and precision. In this paper, based on the response characteristics of single photon detectors and the sea surface reflection model, a theoretical model for quantitatively calculating the intensity of sea surface returns was proposed. Inputting the system parameters of the advanced topographic laser altimeter system (ATLAS) carried by ICESat-2 (the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite 2), we verified the model with the echo intensity based on the measured point cloud data ATL03 from ICESat-2 and the global wind field data. The results show that this model performs well according to many tracks' data above the Philippine Sea. When the sea surface wind speed is in the range of 4-10 m/s, the mean error is 0.0037 count/pulse, and the root mean square error is 0.153 count/pulse. The relationship between the echo intensity of the spaceborne single-photon ocean altimeter and the average wind speed above the sea level was analyzed. The conclusion provides an important theoretical basis for the wind speed inversion above the sea level.

Abstract:This study introduces space-based ocean and atmospheric profiling lidar for improving modeling and understanding of ocean carbon cycle. Unique measurements from space-based profiling lidars include (1) the global ocean surface mean square slope measurements for improving air-sea turbulence exchange estimates; (2) the backscatter and beam attenuation measurements for improving the global estimate of partial pressure of CO2 of the ocean with the reduction of uncertainties in primary productivity estimates. Global statistics of CALIOP integrated ocean subsurface backscatter measurements of coastal waters will be presented. The study will also assess the impact of CALIOP on the uncertainty reduction of primary productivity and the improvement of CO2 partial pressure estimates. Ocean surface roughness statistics, its applications in air-sea interaction and its comparisons with other measurements will also be presented

Abstract:CALIOP, the dual wavelength, polarization sensitive lidar flying aboard the CALIPSO satellite, has been operating since June 2006 and is expected to continue beyond 2017. CALIOP's depolarization ratio is one of the best calibrated measurements from space. Over the life of the CALIPSO mission, the stability of the CALIOP depolarization ratio calibration has remained within 1%. CALIOP's highly stable depolarization ratio measurements can be used for studying changes in phytoplankton backscatter and carbon biomass (Behrenfeld et al., 2013). Using the depolarization ratio measurements from CALIOP together with collocated A-Train measurements (such as the ocean surface backscatter cross section derived from CloudSat ocean surface backscatter measurements, AMSRE/AMSR-2 wind speeds, and MODIS diffuse attenuation coefficients), we have developed innovative retrieval methods that translate the CALIOP ocean subsurface signals into the following optical and physical properties (Behrenfeld et al., 2013; Lu et al., 2014; Hu et al., 2015): · the cross polarization component of the column integrated ocean subsurface backscatter signal; · the particulate backscatter coefficient (bbp); · the depolarization ratio of ocean subsurface backscatter; and · the ocean subsurface beam attenuation coefficient. These new CALIOP data products can provide a wealth of unique information to complement existing ocean color measurements, including nighttime measurements, measurements underneath aerosols and non-opaque clouds, measurements in polar regions during all seasons and near sea-ice, and direct measurements of beam attenuation coefficients.

Abstract:Space-based light detection and ranging (lidar) instruments can provide important measurements of ocean ecosystems that both complement passive ocean color observations and address some of the limitations of this latter traditional technology. To this end and despite being designed for atmospheric research, significant progress has been made in retrieving ocean properties with the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) sensor and using these data for new ocean science applications. Over the course of these developments, data processing approaches have matured and product validation efforts have expanded. The purpose of this manuscript is to summarize characteristics of the CALIOP sensor and historical events leading to its use for ocean retrievals, to provide a consolidated synthesis of the current ocean data processing approach, and to summarize product validation status. In addition, we provide here an update on the current status of data processing for the CALIOP record, information on how to access data, processing code, and relevant documents, and recommen-dations on key areas for future developments.
Measurement of Wave Slope Asymmetry from a Multistatic Space Lidar Constellation: Theory and Preliminary Analysis of Wind Direction Retrievals

Abstract:Recently, the National Ocean Partnership Program funded the phase A of a lidar cubesat mission: Rainbow. This mission aims to provide information about surface height, surface vector winds, sea-ice, coastal land surface and liquid water clouds. Depending on the final system characteristics, it could also contribute to our knowledge of coastal ocean turbidity and ecology. We propose here to focus on the wind vector retrieval. Wind is a major source of momentum to the upper ocean and modulates the coupling between the atmosphere and the ocean. In littoral areas, wind influences economic activities like ship navigation and fisheries. The Lidar can provide a retrieval of wind properties closer to the coastlines and at a finer scale than typical microwave systems. We will present the theoretical basis of how the lidar can retrieve the wind speed through the surface roughness measurement [1] and wind direction from the multistatic measurement of the wave slope asymmetry. It is well known that the upwind and crosswind components of the mean square slope are drastically different [2] and several lidar receivers looking at the laser light coming from different directions will be sensitive to this asymmetry. The CALIPSO lidar mission has conducted several large off-nadir angle maneuvers (10° to 30° off-nadir) that show this signature of wind direction but with a limited ability for retrieval because it's a single monostatic system. We will present a preliminary analysis of these data and an overview of the features of the Rainbow mission that will allow us to retrieve wind vector from a cubesat lidar constellation.

Abstract:Abstract Remote sensing from Earth‐observing satellites is now providing valuable information about ocean phytoplankton distributions. This paper presents the new ocean subsurface optical properties obtained from two space‐based lidars: the Cloud‐Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) aboard the Cloud‐Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations satellite and the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS) aboard the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite‐2 satellite. Obtaining reliable estimates of subsurface biomass necessitates removing instrument artifacts peculiar to each sensor, that is, polarization crosstalk artifacts in the CALIOP signals and after pulsing effects arising from the ATLAS photodetectors. We validate the optical properties derived from the corrected lidar backscatter signals using MODerate‐resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer ocean color measurements and autonomous biogeochemical Argo float profiles. Our results support the continued use of present and future spaceborne lidars to study the global plankton system and characterize its vertical structures in the upper ocean.

Abstract:The ICESat-2 photon-counting lidar can simultaneously observe high-resolution radiometric and geometric characteristics of ocean waves. In this study, combining the wave radiometric and geometric characteristics, ICESat-2 can provide robust and accurate wind speeds over oceans that cannot be achieved by using a single characteristic. Specifically, with an along-track segment of 700 m, the sea surface photons and surface profile are detected and generated from ICESat-2 ATL03 geolocated photons by which the received energy and wave height are obtained. The unknown atmospheric transmittance and swell wave height have significant impacts on deriving the water surface reflectance (radiometric characteristic) and the wind-driven water height (geometric characteristic), respectively. We use all available ICESat-2 data in 2018 and 2019 to determine the unknown parameters and further separately estimate wind speeds. The radiation-based method performs better at low wind speeds, while the geometry-based method performs better at high wind speeds, and we combine each specific advantage to obtain more reliable wind speeds. In the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and Indian Ocean, thousands of ICESat-2 ground tracks from 2020 are used to estimate wind speeds, and the performance is validated against a trustworthy data source of ERA5 with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of ∼0.3 m for wave heights and an RMSE of ∼1.5 m/s for wind speeds. ICESat-2 has shown great ability to provide independent wind speeds over oceans with high accuracy and resolution, which may fill the gap of wind speeds on a small scale as the large-scale results are well observed by spaceborne microwave devices.

Abstract:This paper presents an innovative retrieval method that translate the CALIOP land surface laser pulse returns into the surface bidirectional reflectance. To better analyze the surface returns, the CALIOP receiver impulse response and the downlinked samples' distribution at 30 m resolution are discussed. The saturated laser pulse returns from snow and ice surfaces are recovered based on surface tail information. The retrieved snow surface bidirectional reflectance is compared with reflectance from both CALIOP cloud cover regions and MODIS BRDF/Albedo model parameters. Besides the surface bidirectional reflectance, the column top-of-atmosphere bidirectional reflectance is calculated from the CALIOP lidar background data. It is compared with bidirectional reflectance from WFC radiance measurements. The retrieved CALIOP surface bidirectional reflectance and column top-of-atmosphere bidirectional reflectance results provide unique information to complement existing MODIS standard data products and would have valuable applications for modellers.
Simulation of Coherent Doppler Wind Lidar Measurement from Space Based on CALIPSO Lidar Global Aerosol Observations

Abstract:The performance of a space-based 2.1-μm coherent Doppler wind lidar (CDWL) measurement at a single laser shot in clear-air conditions is computer simulated, based on the coherent Doppler lidar theory developed in the recent decades, and using the global aerosol distribution derived from one year (March 2007–February 2008) of the CALIPSO lidar measurements. The accuracy of radial wind velocity good estimates and the fraction of good estimates, depending on backscattered signals from aerosols, generally decrease with altitude. A critical altitude is defined as the altitude below which the good estimate fraction of velocity estimates is larger than 90.0%. With a laser pulse energy of 250mJ at an off-nadir pointing angle of 45°, a telescope of 1m in diameter and a vertical range resolution of ∼800m, this critical altitude can reach an altitude of 4.0–5.0km between 20°S and 40°N where dust and biomass burning aerosols are ubiquitous. The critical altitude gradually decreases as approaching the two poles and drops to 0.5–1.5km in the polar regions. When the laser pulse energy is reduced to 100mJ, the critical altitude is generally decreased by ∼0.5km and can still reach an altitude of 3.5–4.5km in the dust and smoke aerosol enriched tropical and subtropical regions. A laser pulse energy of only a few millijoules can still achieve velocity measurements with an RMS error smaller than 1ms−1 and a good estimate fraction better than 90% in the lowest kilometers of the troposphere.
Observations of Arctic Snow and Sea Ice Cover from CALIOP Lidar Measurements

Abstract:This paper describes the development and validation of a method to accurately identify snow/ice cover, surface melting, land surface and open water in polar regions using polar-orbiting Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) lidar measurements from the Cloud and Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Observation (CALIPSO) mission. The technique is based on the relationship between integrated attenuated backscatter color ratio and integrated depolarization ratio, and is proven to efficiently separate snow/ice cover and surface melting from open water and land surfaces. The method has been applied to 10years (2006–2016) of CALIOP data to study the seasonal and inter-annual variability of Arctic sea ice cover and its declining trend. Results show that the area fraction of snow cover over land at latitudes >60°N varied between 0.9 during winter and 0.1 in summer. The CALIOP observations of Arctic sea ice cover exhibit a strong seasonal cycle and significant inter-annual variability, which are consistent with the passive microwave-based sea ice results. The >10years of CALIOP continuous observations of the snow/ice cover will benefit the communities modeling snow/ice melting and climate change.
