Abstract:To regulate the use of food additives is of great significance to human health, for the excessive use of food additives can cause damage to human body so serious as organ failure and even cancers. Benzoic acid (BA) is a widely used food preservative, and it is of great importance to achieve high-sensitive detection of it. Conventional THz detection method can obtain the fingerprint spectrum of the sample in the terahertz band, it can only detect a sample to be detected at a milligram level, and it is not suitable for the micro or trace analysis of the sample. In this paper, an enhanced terahertz (THz) micro-nano structure of metamaterial based on electro-magnetic theory was designed to achieve enhanced detection of benzoic acid additives by THz technology. THz spectroscopy is more sensitive to temperature changes than other spectroscopic detection techniques, so it is particularly important to find out a method of spectral temperature compensation to minimize the inference caused by temperature variations in the detection of samples with variable temperature. To this end, based on the enhanced technology of THz metamaterial, an optimized compensation method for external temperature variations was explored in this paper. Firstly, the THz spectra of seven samples with different concentrations under six different temperatures were collected. Secondly, smoothing and baseline correction methods were used to preprocess the spectra to study the better spectral pretreatment methods. To reduce the influence of the change of external temperature on the detection, the External Parameter Orthogonalization (EPO) and Generalized Least Squares Weighting (GLSW) methods were introduced to compensate the temperature change. These two aforementioned methods were compared with the method without temperature compensation, respectively. Then, Uninformative Variable Elimination (UVE), principal component analysis (PCA), successive projections algorithm (SPA) and Competitive Adaptive Reweighted Sampling (CARS) were used to explore the optimal terahertz band selection method. Finally, Partial Least Squares (PLS) and Least square support vector machine (LS-SVM) models were established, respectively, to realize the enhanced detection of benzoic acid additives. The LS-SVM model combined with SPA and GLSW has the best effect, with the R-p(2) of 0.9892, the RMSEP of 3.8412 x 10(-5) and the LOD of 1.158 x 10(-4) g/mL. The LOD of the model is nearly three times higher than that of the mixed global model. The results show that the GLSW method exhibited a better compensation effect on the THz spectra of benzoic acid solution samples at different temperatures. Therefore, this study can be applied to other temperature-compensated models and can also provide reference for the detection of samples with variable temperature.

Abstract:This study aims at resolving the spectral profiles of pure components from the mixture THz data. A method based on simple-to-use interactive self-modeling mixture analysis (SIMPLISMA), one of self-modeling curve resolution (SMCR) techniques, was put forward to deal with two-way THz spectral data of unknown mixtures for spectral resolution of single species. SMCR requires pure variables which have intensity contributions from only one component for extracting the content information. However, for the spectra of many materials in THz region (about 0.1–3THz), pure variables are usually unavailable for the overlap of absorption peaks or the presence of baseline. To settle this problem, inverted second derivative was employed as an intermediate step to optimize the determination of pure variable. To test the effect, the proposed method was performed on simulated and experimental THz spectra of multicomponent systems. It is demonstrated that SIMPLISMA combined with inverted second derivative spectra is a promising tool to deconvolve multicomponent systems contributing to the identification of ingredients in unknown mixture in THz region.
THz Spectroscopic Decomposition and Analysis in Mixture Inspection Using Soft Modeling Methods

Abstract:At present, the terahertz time-domain spectroscopic information of each component in multi-composition compounds detection is comprehensively combined. The lower resolution level of mixed spectra has posed many difficulties in signal analysis due to the overlapping characteristic information in the mixed ones. In this paper, to compare the performances of Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF), Self-modeling Mixture Analysis (SMMA) and Multivariate Curve Resolution-Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) on complex systems, a binary mixture and a ternary mixture are employed during THz-TDS testing. The position of the absorption peak (PK) and the correlation coefficient are used to evaluate the decomposition effects. The experimental results show that the component spectra resolved by MCR-ALS demonstrate good consistency with the sample components. Further, MCR-ALS presents excellent results in comparison with NMF and SMMA in terms of decomposing precision and computing speed. MCR-ALS thus appears a promising algorithm to resolve the THz multi-way data, and may be useful for many applications, such as medicine quality assurance and unknown component identification in the general area of terahertz science and technology.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) radiation is the electromagnetic spectrum lying between the microwave and infrared portions, and covers wavelength between 3mm and 30um. Terahertz spectroscopy has been used in qualitative and quantitative analysis since molecular vibrations and rotations of a great large number of materials lie in this region. Many techniques, such as principal component regression (PCR) and partial least square regression (PLSR), have been applied in quantitative analysis of terahertz time domain spectroscopy. However, those "soft-modeling" methods, though effective in many cases, all require a large number of samples and have poor extrapolation capability, and the utilization is also restricted in some cases (samples lack or requirement of extrapolation). A parametric method of spectrum, Indirect Hard Modeling (IHM), was proposed to resolve terahertz spectral matrix and quantify the mixtures. Savitzky-Golay method was used to eliminate the influence of noise. Moreover, the features of terahertz spectra were considered and the artificial baseline was also resolved as a signal spectrum to improve spectrum extraction accuracy. Subsequently, the analysis of IHM was carried out, and the ability of prediction and accuracy of the model in the case of low training samples were discussed. In order to validate the capability of the proposed method, quaternary systems of Rifampicin, Lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate were tested. The regression correlation coefficient (R) and root mean square error (RMSE) were employed to estimate the performance of the model. Finally, the comparison of IHM and PLSR were carried out, and theoretical analysis and experimental results indicated that the number of samples required by IHM modeling could be reduce to two during calibration, at the same time, the accuracy of quantitative and extrapolation capabilities were also improved.
Component Spectra Extraction from Terahertz Measurements of Unknown Mixtures.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to extract component spectra from unknown mixtures in the terahertz region. To that end, a method, hard modeling factor analysis (HMFA), was applied to resolve terahertz spectral matrices collected from the unknown mixtures. This method does not require any expertise of the user and allows the consideration of nonlinear effects such as peak variations or peak shifts. It describes the spectra using a peak-based nonlinear mathematic model and builds the component spectra automatically by recombination of the resolved peaks through correlation analysis. Meanwhile, modifications on the method were made to take the features of terahertz spectra into account and to deal with the artificial baseline problem that troubles the extraction process of some terahertz spectra. In order to validate the proposed method, simulated wideband terahertz spectra of binary and ternary systems and experimental terahertz absorption spectra of amino acids mixtures were tested. In each test, not only the number of pure components could be correctly predicted but also the identified pure spectra had a good similarity with the true spectra. Moreover, the proposed method associated the molecular motions with the component extraction, making the identification process more physically meaningful and interpretable compared to other methods. The results indicate that the HMFA method with the modifications can be a practical tool for identifying component terahertz spectra in completely unknown mixtures. This work reports the solution to this kind of problem in the terahertz region for the first time, to the best of the authors' knowledge, and represents a significant advance toward exploring physical or chemical mechanisms of unknown complex systems by terahertz spectroscopy.
An Automatic Unfolding Method for Terahertz Spectra

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) time domain spectroscopy is considered as an attractive tool for material diagnostics and analysis. Despite existing characteristic fingerprints in THz spectra, extraction of these feature information is tough to achieve because of scattering phenomenon. Several methods have been proposed for mitigating scattering effects. However, little attempts are made to unfold THz spectra for extracting parameters of absorption peaks with the distraction of scattering. In this report, an automatic unfolding method for THz spectra is proposed based on multidimensional peak searching and quadratic programming. The obtained Lorentzian parameters for the absorption peaks are accurate and repeatable, thus holding potential for material recognition and quantitative analysis.
Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy of Alpha Endosulfan Persistent Organic Pollutant

Abstract:Frequency-dependent absorption coefficient spectrum and refractive index spectrum of alpha endosulfan, a kind of persistent organic pollutants, are presented in the terahertz frequency region by terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (TDS). The spectral features in the THz region have a number of unique characteristic absorption peaks. The result demonstrates that THz-TDS is a promising method to identify materials. Then we adopted density functional calculation method to analyze theoretic absorption coefficients of single alpha endosulfan molecule within 0.2-2 THz. The results show that absorption peaks at 1.68, 1.91 THz in theoretical calculation correspond to 1.7, 1.88 THz in the experiment. Finally, vibrational modes and approximate assignments were discussed, showing that these matched peaks are caused by intramolecular vibrational modes of alpha endosulfan. Others might be related to intermolecular vibrational modes or combined vibrational modes.

Abstract:Electromagnetic (EM) scattering characteristics of perfectly electrical conducting (PEC) targets in the terahertz (THz) frequency range are investigated through the use of ray-based high-frequency EM techniques. These techniques include the methods of shooting and bouncing rays (SBR), and the truncated-wedge incremental-length diffraction coefficients (TW-ILDCs). The EM fields associated with each ray are tracked and computed, based on the principle of Physical Optics (PO) and/or Geometrical Optics (GO). The total field scattered from the PEC target is then obtained by summing up the EM contributions of each ray and each illuminated edge. In contrast to previously reported applications, these methods are combined together to solve three-dimensional (3D) scattering problems in the THz region. Due to the use of analytical formulas of Physical Optics and the truncated-wedge incremental-length diffraction coefficients method, the consideration of the multi-reflection effect in shooting and bouncing rays, and partially accounting for the second-order edge-diffraction effects in the truncated-wedge incremental-length diffraction coefficients method, we obtain an extremely efficient algorithm for studying THz scattering. It has excellent agreement with an accurate integral solver, the Multilevel Fast Multipole Algorithm (MLFMA), which cannot be used in handling large-scale THz problems. Both mono- and bistatic radar cross sections (RCS) of several PEC objects in the THz band are given to show the correctness and reliability of the asymptotic methods. The EM scattering characteristics of such targets in the THz region are analyzed. Great differences of the target characteristics between the THz and GHz regimes are observed and discussed.

Abstract:Terahertz radiation bridges the gap between the microwave and optical regimes. It has unique properties such as fingerprint characteristics, non-destructive testing and transparency to various materials, which makes terahertz waves have significant scientific and technological potential in drug testing applications. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy plays an important role in identifying target drugs containing absorption peaks. It can be used to discriminate specific molecules contained in drugs or the changes of components in samples, as many molecules have characteristic absorption peaks in the terahertz regime. Thus, to solve the problems of identifying weak absorption peaks of low content targets in the mixture, in this paper, the adjoint inflection point (AIP) method based on the discrete local maximum (DLM) method is proposed for identifying the characteristic absorption peaks in terahertz regime for the effective identification of the low content target. Firstly, the adjoint inflection points of potential absorption peaks are obtained using the first and second derivative of the terahertz absorption coefficient spectrum. Secondly, the difference spectrum is calculated by performing the operation between the original absorption spectrum and the baseline spectrum. At last, the absorption peak positions are determined by using the DLM method along the difference spectrum. Also, this AIP method is applied to the absorption peak extraction of four nitrofurans sample spectra. The result is compared with the peak positions determined by DLM, and the peak positions are also compared with the peaks calculated by the density functional theory. The better performance of the recognition capacity of the AIP method is observed and verified, especially for weak absorption peaks. This method suggests that it has profound application potential in spectroscopic analyses and even in determining curve peaks in various applications.
X-RAY SPECTRA RECONSTRUCTION OF THOMSON SCATTERING SOURCE FROM ANALYSIS OF ATTENUATION DATA*

Abstract:Thomson Scattering sources have attracted a lot of interest as the new generation of bright X-ray sources. Traditional spectra measurement methods, applied to measured Thomson Scattering source, are troublesome as the X-ray beam is too intense to cause pile up problems. In this case, the analysis of attenuation data, which can provide some information about the spectral distribution, as not affected by the rate of incidence of photons, is a good candidate to measure the X-ray spectrum of the Thomson Scattering. We introduce an iterative statistical algorithm (Expectation-Maximization) to reconstruct the spectra from the attenuation data and a numerical experiment is carried out to test the spectrum reconstruction process. This method performs well to reconstruct the local spectra at small collecting angles. In order to reconstruct spectra at large collecting angles, a new method to process the attenuation data was proposed based on the spectral property of Thomson Scattering source. At collecting angles less than 3.5 mrad, our method performs well and we can also still use it to evaluate the FWHM of the spectra at larger angles.
A New Scattering Correction Method of Different Spectroscopic Analysis for Assessing Complex Mixtures.

Abstract:Physical properties such as particle size distribution and compactness have significant confounding effects on the spectral signals of complex mixtures, which multivariate linear calibration methods such as partial least-squares (PLS) cannot effectively model or correct. Therefore, these effects significantly deteriorate calibration models' predictive abilities for spectral quantitative analysis of complex mixtures. Here, new scattering correction methods were proposed to estimate the additive and multiplicative parameters considering light scattering effects in each spectrum and hence mitigate the detrimental influence of additive and multiplicative effects on quantitative spectroscopic analysis of complex mixtures. Three different correction methods were proposed to estimate the addition coefficient based on two different underlying assumptions, namely, whether this coefficient is related to the wavelength. After addition coefficient elimination, the multiplicative parameter can be eliminated by a simple but very efficient spectral ratio method. Furthermore, linear models are built with key variables, and the predictive performance of these models is verified using the root-mean-square error of prediction datasets. The proposed methods were tested on one apple data set and two publicly available benchmark datasets (i.e., near-infrared spectral data of meat and powder mixture samples) and compared with some existing correction methods. The results showed that (1) additive effects of different types of samples can be eliminated by different methods and (2) these methods can appreciable improve quantitative spectroscopic analysis of complex mixture samples. This study indicates that accurate quantitative spectroscopic analysis of complex mixtures can be achieved through the combination of additive effect elimination and the spectral ratio method.
Identification and quantitative analysis of chemical compounds based on multiscale linear fitting of terahertz spectra

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy is considered as an attractive tool for the analysis of chemical composition. The traditional methods for identification and quantitative analysis of chemical compounds by THz spectroscopy are all based on full-spectrum data. However, intrinsic features of the THz spectrum only lie in absorption peaks due to existence of disturbances, such as unexpected components, scattering effects, and barrier materials. We propose a strategy that utilizes Lorentzian parameters of THz absorption peaks, extracted by a multiscale linear fitting method, for both identification of pure chemicals and quantitative analysis of mixtures. The multiscale linear fitting method can automatically remove background content and accurately determine Lorentzian parameters of the absorption peaks. The high recognition rate for 16 pure chemical compounds and the accurate predicted concentrations for theophylline-lactose mixtures demonstrate the practicability of our approach. Scattering Properties Of Electromagnetic Waves From Metal Object In The Lower Terahertz Region

Abstract:An efficient hybrid algorithm is proposed to analyze the electromagnetic scattering properties of metal objects in the lower terahertz (THz) frequency. The metal object can be viewed as perfectly electrical conducting object with a slightly rough surface in the lower THz region. Hence the THz scattered field from metal object can be divided into coherent and incoherent parts. The physical optics and truncated-wedge incremental-length diffraction coefficients methods are combined to compute the coherent part; while the small perturbation method is used for the incoherent part. With the MonteCarlo method, the radar cross section of the rough metal surface is computed by the multilevel fast multipole algorithm and the proposed hybrid algorithm, respectively. The numerical results show that the proposed algorithm has good accuracy to simulate the scattering properties rapidly in the lower THz region.

Abstract:We developed a method to analyze sample composition via hyperspectral imaging with terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). Historically, THz spectral amplitude data alone have been most often used for hyperspectral analysis. We show advantages of simultaneously using both the amplitude and phase angle components of the THz transmission data in the analysis. Use of the complex transmission data improves the integrity of the sample component differentiation with respect to the sample composition. We incorporate principal component analysis and other simple machine learning algorithms into our data analysis methodology to automate the process of interpreting hyperspectral data and isolating unique components. As a demonstration, we automatically distinguish the structure of both a split-ring resonator and a sugar pellet sample.

A Scattering Model Based on GTD in Terahertz Band

Abstract:Scattering center is the basic electromagnetic scattering characteristic of targets in optical region. In this paper, the parametric scattering center model is analyzed for application to THz band. Then a reduced scattering center model is derived. This model is simpler than parametric scattering model and suitable to the scattering mechanisms in THz band. On this basis, experimental results are analyzed and the validity of the scattering center model in THz band is verified.
Wavelength Selection of Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy Based on a Partial Least Squares Model for Quantitative Analysis

Abstract:Terahertz spectroscopy, combined with chemometric methods, has proved to be an effective tool in the quantitative analysis of many substances. However, current research has mainly focused on comparing different algorithms under the full spectrum. In fact, the full spectrum is not only composed of characteristic features of the samples, but also many types of noises. Hence, the accuracy of the quantitative analysis may be unsatisfactory if the full spectrum is selected. In this paper, a wavelength selection method based on partial least squares and absorption peak was proposed and an efficient frequency band was determined in the quantitative analysis of three types of pesticides, i.e., 6-benzylaminopurine, 2, 6-dichlorobenzonitrile, and imidacloprid. By introducing two parameters, the sum of peak intervals ( S i ) and peak width, the most efficient peak was selected from multiple peaks and the specific peak width was given with the aid of particle swarm optimization. We concluded that the most efficient absorption peak for quantitative analysis corresponding to the largest S i and full width near one-half maximum could characterize full spectrum information precisely. Comparing before and after wavelength selection, the correlation coefficient ( R ) of the three pesticides have increased from 0.9671, 0.9705, 0.9884 to 0.9921, 0.9934, and 0.9957. In conclusion, the proposed wavelength selection method was demonstrated to be very efficient for the quantitative analysis of the pesticide mixtures, which also could be helpful in the analysis of other multicomponent mixtures with absorption peaks.

A xenon light, an electric control translation stage and a spectrometer were gathered to set up a device; Intralipid-20%, India-ink and C6H12O6 were used to prepare 225 kinds of complex mixed solutions; the diffuse transmittance spectrums were measured at 20 points off the transmission center distributed from 0-5 mm (interval 0.25 mm); the single and multi-point diffuse transmittance spectrums were analyzed by partial least squares regression for modeling and prediction. The results show that the modeling and prediction accuracy of the concentrations of the intralipid-20% and India-ink increased with the growing of the transmittance points, but the concentration of the C6H12O6 did not increase. It is proved that the spectrums collected by different points can raise the signal to noise radio of the strong absorption and scattering substance, and the signal to noise radio of the weak absorption and scattering substance would be improved by increasing the current system accuracy.
[Study of Terahertz Amplitude Imaging Based on the Mean Absorption].

Abstract:A new method of terahertz (THz) imaging based on the mean absorption is proposed. Terahertz radiation is an electromagnetic radiation in the range between millimeter waves and far infrared. THz pulse imaging emerges as a novel tool in many fields because of its low energy and non-ionizing character, such as material, chemical, biological medicine and food safety. A character of THz imaging technique is it can get large amount of information. How to extract the useful parameter from the large amount of information and reconstruct sample's image is a key technology in THz imaging. Some efforts have been done for advanced visualization methods to extract the information of interest from the raw data. Both time domain and frequency domain visualization methods can be applied to extract information on the physical properties of samples from THz imaging raw data. The process of extracting useful parameter from raw data of the new method based on the mean absorption was given in this article. This method relates to the sample absorption and thickness, it delivers good signal to noise ratio in the images, and the dispersion effects are cancelled. A paper with a "THz" shape hole was taken as the sample to do the experiment. Traditional THz amplitude imaging methods in time domain and frequency domain are used to achieve the sample's image, such as relative reduction of pulse maximum imaging method, relative power loss imaging method, and relative power loss at specific frequency imaging method. The sample's information that reflected by these methods and the characteristics of these methods are discussed. The method base on the mean absorption within a certain frequency is also used to reconstruct sample's image. The experimental results show that this new method can well reflect the true information of the sample. And it can achieve a clearer image than the other traditional THz amplitude imaging methods. All the experimental results and theoretical analyses indicate that the method base on the mean absorption within a certain frequency can reflects sample absorb and thickness information, it can achieve good signal to noise ratio in the images. Because the absorption is mean absorption within in a certain frequency, so the method proposed in this article is especially suitable for samples with simple structure. And this new method can be a useful added tool for the other traditional THz amplitude imaging methods.

Abstract:The potential for terahertz (THz) spectroscopy to detect explosives and other materials of interest is complicated by rough surface scattering. Our previous work has demonstrated that by averaging over diffuse observation angles and surfaces, spectral features could be recovered from laboratory measurements and numerical computer simulations. In addition to averaging, a low-pass cepstrum filter was used to reduce noise due to the random rough surface. This paper expands on these concepts by using the cepstrum of both the random rough surface and the material properties of the target material to choose an optimal cutoff frequency for the filter. The utility of these techniques is evaluated using laboratory measurements and Monte Carlo simulations for many sets of random surface realizations. The Kirchhoff Approximation is used to quickly model diffuse scattering from dielectric materials with gradually undulating rough surfaces when the incident and diffuse scattering angles are near the surface normal. The ability to recover the spectral features of rough dielectric materials from diffuse THz scattering may prove useful for the design of future security screening systems.
