When we want to discuss the question of update of Marxist philosophy, we must grasp the meaning of ‘updating’and current context, enhance our ability of self-understanding.

Abstract:Reflection on and criticism of enlightenment reason is an indispensable part of the Enlightenment itself. It is an important counterbalance to the Enlightenment myth and the crisis of modernity, as well as being a major theoretical subject for political philosophy in the age of globalization. This reflection and criticism must be grasped and examined from both the external perspective of socio-historical requirements and the internal perspective of intellectual history. While giving full credit to the achievements of Enlightenment reason and modernity, we need to review their inherent conflicts, reveal the resultant social crisis, and sort out, reflect on and reference postmodernism's denunciation of Enlightenment reason and the crisis of modernity in order to provide a more far-reaching solution to these issues. Marx turned the critique of Enlightenment reason and modernity into a critical reconstruction of the logic of capital and the capitalist mode of production, seeing the resolution of these evils as lying in transcendence of capitalist private ownership. In this way, he brought the critique of Enlightenment reason to a climax and showed modern society a way to more advanced development.

Abstract:Marxist philosophy belongs to the category of modern philosophy in nature,because of its modernity and meaning.Such modernity is just reflected in the criticism of modernity.Firstly,philosophy turns the model of ontology into that of survival;then,theory puts an end to the hegemony of traditional metaphysics in its specification and elaboration about human,and realize the change in direction with success;meanwhile,the theory of social criticism fulfills the function of "critical weapon",providing a referance for the improvement of individual survival.Marxist philosophy,when criticizing and surpasing,directs straightforwardly at the issue of human being itself,making some possibly theoretical room for the self-unity in the crisis of modernity,and giving a reply to the crisis of human nature as well,which displays the critical awareness of the modernity of Marxist philosophy in the perspective of human nature.

Abstract:Most of contemporary radical thoughts are not only traditionally revolutionary and utopian alternatives to capitalist mode of production,but also new epistemological approaches. With a complicated relation between the two,they focus on the reflection upon disciplinary knowledge and reorientation of historical narratives. At this point,they are qualified to the term "post-Marxism" ,in their attempt to take over the ideological (hegemonic) place of Marxism with new historical epistemologies,new political understandings and new strategies for political struggles. While the whole Western Marxism has been inspired by Lukacs' History and Class Consciousness,its shift to the post-Marxism position is due to the following changes —— political position relating to capitalism and anti-capitalist movements and further turns of narrative of subjects. In order to understand correctly the qualities,reference of discourse and value of different kinds of current western radical thoughts,it is necessary to rewrite their logic intellectual histories by focusing on the relations among their radical political strategies,historical epistemologies and capitalist reality.

Abstract:The fundamental valuation of Marxist philosophy revolution is basically linked with the comprehension of the contemporary significance of Marxist philosophy, which, however, is lost in most situations. It has been either confined in the framework of modern metaphysics or comprehended as the Nietzschean subversion. This paper raises the task of reappraising the nature and the significance of Marxist philosophy revolution with three main points: 1.The basis of ontology needs thorough clarification; 2.Whether the fundamental system of modern metaphysics has been disintegrated or not3.The elemental distinction between the epistemological orientation and the ontological orientation is required in the process.

Abstract:Since Engels,what Marxists have explained is opposite to Marxism,which is not the dominant pattern in the community of Chinese Marxists.The source of opposition is not revolutionary change of Marxist philosophy nor the comparative studies on the modern changes of Western philosophy but a kind of misunderstanding of classical Marxist writers and their theories.In the name of Marxism,that modern Western philosophy is wholly denied should be changed,which does notinvertMarxism but insists on Marxism better.We should use the developing Marxism to guide the researches of the modern Western philosophy and keep abreast with the times.

Abstract:Marx's state theory is not only an important component of historical materialism, but also a necessary part of his political thought. After long years of silence, Marxist state theory revived after WWII and developed anew in the era of globalization. Study of its main ideas, historic fate, further development and new agenda can confirm its explanatory power in the present day and promote its reconstruction and enrichment in the era of globalization. However, some questions in the intellectual structure of Marxism are still open to further study: for instance, the relations between civil society and the state and between the economic foundation and superstructure, the withering away of the state as the end of politics, human emancipation and its conditions, the economic and political forms of the transition from a capitalist to a communist society, and particularly the form of organizational system adopted by the dictatorship of the proletariat, and the ideology of the crucial link of the reproduction of social relations. At the same time, we need to learn from and integrate new social science theories and actively respond to the great changes in political organization and structure brought about by globalization, while actively participating in the great theoretical debates of today.

Abstract:Some scholars affirm that there are some common social-historical and theoretical backgrounds between the revolutionary change in Marx's philosophy and contemporary transformation of western philosophy and in some sense, the transformation from modern philosophy to contemporary one is a transformation to real life and practice, which will make revolutionary change and contemporary transformation be mentioned in the same breath. This paper studies on such compare and considers that this affirmative idea reflects Marxist realistic and practical attitude.

Abstract:To achieve modern construction of philosophy of Marx it is necessary to refer to questions and challenges raised by modern philosophy in the west. Abstract:Since the end of the 1970s,the research on Marxism philosophy in China has experienced two phases: the first phase(1970s-2000) and the second phase(after the year of 2000).In the first phase,its research began to break traditional textbook system,and formed the research ideas from the discussion of "practice is the sole criterion for testing truth",to humanitarian and alienation,and to practical materialism and humanology.The second phase started with the influence of "Return to Marxism",the research on Marxism Philosophy in China attempted to search new theoretical framework by re-explaining Marxist texts.By interpreting the internal relationship between the critique of political economy and the development of philosophy thought,the scholars put forward that the core of Marxism philosophy research is capital logic critique,and tried to take it as the base to explore the framework of Marxism in current practice in China.

Abstract:Wang Nanshi holds that in classical Marxism,the sense of problem,theory and academic history the three phases interrelated with each other.A well development of the studies of Marxism requires a unity and balance among these three,which is the root of vitality in Marxism.Wu Xiaoming only by the way of Marxist philosophical revolution,can the understanding and sensing of social reality be a genuine ideological task.Going back to social reality itself should be the axis of the whole studies of Marxist philosophy,namely,its ways,methods and problems.Sun Zhengyu holds that of philosophical work lies at the following key points,i.e.,the themes of the spirit of the epoch is the focus of Marxist philosophy,the alienation from reality marks the transcendental character of Marxist philosophy,the alienation from fashionable viewpoints embodies the critical nature of Marxism,and the conception of basic ideas demonstrates the logical force of Marxist philosophy.Zhang Yibing proposes his new methodology of "post-text".He believes that,in contrast with the traditional interpretation of the text,reading is a creative production rather than going back to the text itself,which means a revolution in textual production.

Abstract:After Marx and Engels passed away, Marxist philosophy has experienced complicated and repeated processes of revision. Being unquestionably successors of Marxism, theorists from the Second International made efforts to defend Marxism against mentalism and revisionism, generalizing and elaborating on Marxism with philosophical theories. However, due to historical limitations and their misinterpretation of Marxist philosophy these theorists failed to understand the practical nature of Marxist philosophy and the innovation function it played in history of philosophy. They also missed the significant touch of modernity in Marxist philosophy. Thus they regarded Marxist philosophy as a branch of modern philosophy, and hence neglected the distinction between Marxist philosophy and old materialism. In their interpretation of Marxist philosophy, the essential characteristics were ignored and made demonstrative and dogmatic. As a result, development of Marxist philosophy was hindered.

Abstract:Hegel’s method consists of the following three elements:Abstract understanding,dialectical reason(dialectics) and speculative reason.While reforming Hegel’s method,Marx extracts the second element,i.e.,dialectics from Hegel’s method.This paper holds that Marx’s dialectics must not be interpreted as the dialectics of nature which is the movement of nature by itself dividing from human’s practical activities,but as the dialectics of social history which includes the following three basic items:the dialectics of praxis(including dialectic of labor),the dialectics of humanized nature and the dialectics of social formations.

Abstract:Doing research on Western is difficult because the researchers have to read original works written in foreign languages to understand the ideas of western scholars.It is even more difficult to evaluate their works by referring to appropriate criteria and make sound judgments.To study Marxism in the west we need a strong desire to explore into the theories and find solutions to major theoretical and practical issues.The author,for example,has undergone changes in views towards Western in the process of research concerning the following ideas: the radical related to the so-called left-wing,the scholastic divorced from reality,'philosophic' confined to the fields of philosophy and aesthetics,reconciled and compromised that combines modern western thoughts with Marxism,critical that attempts to destroy and reject,and Marxism in developed capitalist society that is suitable only for modern industrial society.

Abstract:Taking several opinions about the book Marxism and the modern-contemporary trend of western philosophy as direction, the author of the paper gives further explanation to clarify his views on some problems. The first is concerning the relation between the modes of philosophic thought and the basic standpoint of philosophers. After limiting the implication of the modes, the paper analyzes the relation as the result of its construction, and compares their importance. The second is on the modes of thought of duality of subject-object and the transcendence to it in contemporary western philosophy. The author inquired the implication of the duality, its role, limitations as well as the success and failures. The third is on the relation of Marxist philosophy and contemporary western philosophy. The author discusses two questions. One is the main deviation of academic circle in treating the relation at present time. Another is how we treat the connection and essential difference.

Abstract:How do we re-understand Marx's philosophy in a new perspective? This is a very important issue in the contemporary study of Marx's philosophy.Over the past ten years,Prof.Yu Wu-jin has developed various interpretations of Marx's philosophy from different perspectives under the name of "reunderstanding Marx".In short,he attempts to transcend the traditional interpretative approach to Marx's philosophy,to reinterpretate Marx's philosophy and to provide a new conception of its system in terms of philosophy of economics,such as "object,value,time and freedom".Then,what does "re-understanding Marx" mean? What is the purpose of this slogan? What are the key issues of "re-understanding Marx"? What kind of image does "the re-understood Marx" have? Does it meet what Marx meant indeed? Does it represent a "real Marx"? This paper attempts to make a critical reflection on Prof.Yu's re-understanding Marx in terms of the above issues.
