Abstract:Photonic quantum technologies have been extensively studied in quantum information science, owing to the high-speed transmission and outstanding low-noise properties of photons. However, applications based on photonic entanglement are restricted due to the diffraction limit. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time the maintaining of quantum polarization entanglement in a nanoscale hybrid plasmonic waveguide composed of a fiber taper and a silver nanowire. The transmitted state throughout the waveguide has a fidelity of 0.932 with the maximally polarization entangled state Φ(+). Furthermore, the Clauser, Horne, Shimony, and Holt (CHSH) inequality test performed, resulting in value of 2.495 ± 0.147 > 2, demonstrates the violation of the hidden variable model. Because the plasmonic waveguide confines the effective mode area to subwavelength scale, it can bridge nanophotonics and quantum optics and may be used as near-field quantum probe in a quantum near-field micro/nanoscope, which can realize high spatial resolution, ultrasensitive, fiber-integrated, and plasmon-enhanced detection.

Abstract:A hybrid plasmonic parallel transmission line scheme constructed by a spatial single mode with time-domain multiline waveguide is presented in this paper. The proposed configuration enables a nanometer light localization while retaining a long propagation distance (~74 μm) at optical communication wavelengths with no crosstalk between data channels. High extinction ratio between the nanoribs peak energies (~20 dB) has been achieved after optimization. Furthermore, the proposed optical parallel transmission line scheme shows the advantages of enabling an optical device with a large number of parallel transmission channels, as well as a good robustness with respect to the fabrication tolerances.

Abstract:This paper proposed to use plasmonic waveguides for on-chip nanoscale optical data transmission. To optically transmit data between electronic devices, plasmonic devices, such as plasmonic sources, modulators, waveguides, switches, filters and detectors are needed. A novel planar hybrid plasmonic waveguide (PHPW), which consists of a low-index stripe sandwiched between a high-index nanowire and a metallic film is reported. A highly confined hybrid mode is formed in the low-index stripe as the result of interaction between photonic mode and plasmonic mode. The combination of the plasmonic and photonic modes across the low-index stripe can simultaneously achieve long propagation length and strong field confinement with high power intensity in the PHPW. The PHPW is based on a planar structure, offering additional degrees of freedoms to design a large variety of high-performance passive and active plasmonic devices such as waveguide bends, waveguide couplers and ring resonators.

Abstract:We report a numerical study of plasmonic waveguides that localize light in two dimensions at a cross section of 4.2 nm x 2.1 nm with the propagation length of 38 mu m. By varying the geometrical parameters, strong mode confinements (range from lambda(2)/3352 to lambda(2)/2557525) are achieved with controllable propagation distance (44.68-40.988 mu m), and mode size below 1 nm(2) has been demonstrated for the first time. Furthermore, a cross-index-modulation mechanism is proposed to explain the strong field localization behavior, providing guidelines for future waveguide designs. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Owing to their high capacity and flexibility, broadband wireless communications have been widely employed in radio and microwave regimes, playing indispensable roles in our daily life. Their optical analogs, however, have not been demonstrated at the nanoscale. In this paper, by exploiting plasmonic nanoantennas, we demonstrate the complete design of broadband wireless links and networks in the realm of nanophotonics. With a 100-fold enhancement in power transfer superior to previous designs as well as an ultrawide bandwidth that covers the entire telecommunication wavelength range, such broadband nanolinks and networks are expected to pave the way for future optical integrated nanocircuits.
Generating a Sub-Nanometer-confined Optical Field in a Nanoslit Waveguiding Mode

Abstract:We propose to generate a sub-nanometer-confined optical field in a nanoslit waveguiding mode in a coupled nanowire pair (CNP). We show that, when a conventional waveguide mode with a proper polarization is evanescently coupled into a properly designed CNP with a central nanoslit, it can be efficiently channeled into a high-purity nanoslit mode within a waveguiding length <10 mu m. The CNP can be either freestanding or on-chip by using a tapered fiber or planar waveguide for input-coupling, with a coupling efficiency up to 95%. Within the slit region, the output diffraction-limited nanoslit mode offers an extremely confined optical field (similar to 0.3 nm x 3.3 nm) with a peak-to-background ratio higher than 25 dB and can be operated within a 200-nm bandwidth. The group velocity dispersion of the nanoslit mode for ultrafast pulsed operation is also briefly investigated. Compared with the previous lasing configuration, the waveguiding scheme demonstrated here is not only simple and straightforward in structural design but is also much flexible and versatile in operation. Therefore, the waveguiding scheme we show here may offer an efficient and flexible platform for exploring light-matter interactions beyond the nanometer scale, and developing optical technologies ranging from superresolution nanoscopy and atom/molecule manipulation to ultra-sensitivity detection.
Extraordinary Optical Transmission in a Hybrid Plasmonic Waveguide

Abstract:Extraordinary optical transmission in free space through nanohole arrays has been widely investigated over the past two decades. However, because of its intrinsic nature of periodicity, it suffers from poor integration with nano-/micro-systems. Here, by folding a periodic grating into a compact cavity, we propose a waveguide-based structure within subwavelength, which also exhibits extraordinary optical transmission. Thus, lots of promising applications realized in metallic films can now be migrated onto integrated waveguides in an ultracompact way. Comparing the characteristics of the proposed integrated device and the conventional periodic structure, we reveal the nature of the unexpected transmission spectrum. Based on this principle, a collinear broadband (~500 nm) polarizer with extinction ratio of >17.8 dB is proposed, with an ultrashort length of 450 nm. Furthermore, this structure has the potential in biological applications when integrated into lab-on-a-chip or microfluidic system. As an example, a biosensor with enhanced sensitivity of 775 nm/RIU is presented.

Abstract:The control of light with light at a nanometer scale is a fundamental issue in optics. In this study, we demonstrate nanoscale all-optical control of light based on linear optics in an on-chip integrated subwavelength plasmonic waveguide system. The signal intensities of multiple output channels are all-optically manipulated simultaneously in various manners by coupling the fields of a standing wave in the main waveguide to the nearby subwavelength branch waveguides. More importantly, the phase differences between different output channels equal either 0 or pi, thereby exhibiting an interesting binary characteristic. This phenomenon provides both phase robustness and switchable features, which significantly facilitate further applications at nanometer scales. As a demonstration, two output channels are used to drive a two-element plasmonic nanoantenna, and the dynamical control of the emission direction of the nanoantenna is successfully presented. The proposed control mechanism displays an ultrafast response on a femtosecond time scale. This on-chip integrated multichannel all-optical control mechanism with both the intensity and phase-controllable characteristics at the nanometer scale represents a significant advancement in the research area of all-optical control in nanophotonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:The manipulation of light propagation is a basic subject in optics and has many important applications. With the development of nano-optics, this area has been downscaled to wavelength or even subwavelength scales. One of the most efficient ways to control light propagation is to exploit interference effects. Here, by manipulating the interference between two nanogrooves on a metal surface, we realize a submicron broadband surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) unidirectional coupler. More importantly, we find an anomalous bandwidth shrinking behavior in the proposed SPP unidirectional coupler as the groove separation is down to a subwavelength scale of one-quarter of the SPP wavelength. This abnormal behavior is well explained by considering the contribution of the near-field quasi-cylindrical waves in addition to the interference of propagating SPPs and the dispersion effects of individual grooves. Such near-field effects provide new opportunities for the design of ultracompact optical devices.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polariton, a kind of surface electromagnetic wave propagating along the interface between metals and dielectrics, provides an excellent platform for the realization of integrated photonic devices due to its unique properties of confining light into subwavelength scales. Our recent research progresses of nanoscale integrated photonic devices based on surface plasmon polaritons, including all-optical switches, all-optical logic discriminator, and all-optical routers, are introduced in detail.

Abstract:Squeezing light to nanoscale is the most vital capacity of nanophotonic circuits processing on-chip optical signals that allows to significantly enhance light-matter interaction by stimulating various nonlinear optical effects. It is well known that plasmon can offer an unrivaled concentration of optical energy beyond the optical diffraction limit. However, the progress of plasmonic technology is mainly hindered by its ohmic losses, thus leading to the difficulty in building large-area photonic integrated circuits. To significantly increase the propagation distance of light, we develop a new waveguide structure operating at the telecommunication wavelength of 1,550 nm. It consists of a nanostructured hybrid plasmonic waveguide embedded in a high-index-contrast slot waveguide. We capitalize on the strong mode confinement of the slot waveguide and reduce mode areas with the nanostructured hybrid plasmonic configuration while maintaining extremely low ohmic losses using a nanoscale metal strip. The proposed design achieves a record propagation distance of 1,115 µm while comparing with that of other designs at a mode area of the order of 10-5A0 (A0 is the diffraction-limited area). The mode characterization considering fabrication imperfections and spectral responses show the robustness and broadband operation range of the proposed waveguide. Moreover, we also investigated the crosstalk to assess the density of integration. The proposed design paves the way for building nanophotonic circuits and optoelectronic devices that require strong light-matter interaction.

Abstract:It is demonstrated that with appropriately arranged dielectric nanoparticle structures an extremely low loss guiding of light is achievable at the nanoscale. These dielectric nanoparticle waveguides (DNPWs) exhibit subwavelength transverse confinement of light comparable with metallic plasmon particle waveguides (MPPWs). Different from the MPPWs subject to inevitable intrinsic absorption loss, the material loss for some DNPWs is negligible, enabling long-distance light transport and offering an alternative choice for integrated photonics.

Abstract:We propose a novel and compact all-optical device for tunable slow and fast light propagation in parallel coupled structures consisting of two dissimilar optical nanowires. Advancement/delay tunability is achieved by varying the spacing between two nanowires. We develop a simplified analytical model to describe the dependence of achievable time advancement/delay and pulse broadening on the diameter of optical nanowires and it is indicated that this model agrees well with numerical results. Simulation results show that achievable maximum group-index change is about 1.4 and a 10-mm-long device can advance/delay a 2-ps pulse by 15.9 ps with pulse broadening factor equaling to 2.

Abstract:We propose double-cladded and multi-cladded waveguide structures that enable flexible engineering of group-velocity dispersion over multi-octave spanning spectral range, allowing to produce intriguing dispersion characteristics that oscillate between normal and anomalous dispersion in a sinusoidal-like fashion with controllable magnitude, which will be very useful for nonlinear photonic applications. The proposed waveguides are easy to fabricate in practice, which we expect to have great potential for broad applications in nonlinear photonics, quantum optics, and optical communication. Abstract:We provide both experimental and theoretical investigation on extraordinary low transmission through one-dimensional nanoslit and two-dimensional nanohole arrays on ultra-thin metal films. Unambiguous proofs demonstrate that short-range surface plasmon polaritons play a key role leading to this novel phenomenon, which could be useful for creating new polarization filters and other integrated plasmonic components.

Abstract:Nanostructure is an effective solution for realizing optoelectronic devices with compact size and high performances simultaneously. This paper reports our research progress on integrated nanophotonic devices for optical interconnections. We proposed a parent-sub microring structure for optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) with compact footprint, large free spectral range, and uniform channel spacing. All eight channels can be multiplexed and de-multiplexed with 2.6 dB drop loss, 0.36 nm bandwidth (> 40 GHz), -20 dB channel crosstalk, and high thermal tuning efficiency of 0.15 nm/mW. A novel principle of optical switch was proposed and demonstrated based on the coupling of the defect modes in photonic crystal waveguide. Switching functionality with bandwidth up to 24 nm and extinction ratio in excess of 15 dB over the entire bandwidth was achieved, while the footprint was only 8 mu m x 17.6 mu m. We proposed an optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) coding and decoding method to increase the data-carrying capacity of wireless optical interconnect. An integrated OAM emitter, where the topological charge can be continuously varied from -4 to 4 was realized. Also we studied ultrafast modulated nLED as the integrated light source for optical interconnections using a nanobeam cavity with stagger holes.
Designing plasmonic eigenstates for optical signal transmission in planar channel devices

Abstract:On-chip optoelectronic and all-optical information processing paradigms require compact implementation of signal transfer for which nanoscale surface plasmons circuitry offers relevant solutions. This work demonstrates the directional signal transmittance mediated by 2D plasmonic eigenmodes supported by crystalline cavities. Channel devices comprising two mesoscopic triangular input and output ports and sustaining delocalized, higher-order plasmon resonances in the visible to infra-red range are shown to enable the controllable transmittance between two confined entry and exit ports coupled over a distance exceeding 2 $\mu$m. The transmittance is attenuated by > 20dB upon rotating the incident linear polarization, thus offering a convenient switching mechanism. The optimal transmittance for a given operating wavelength depends on the geometrical design of the device that sets the spatial and spectral characteristic of the supporting delocalized mode. Our approach is highly versatile and opens the way to more complex information processing using pure plasmonic or hybrid nanophotonic architectures.

Abstract:Optical fibers are an excellent transmission medium for light and underpin the infrastructure of the Internet, but generally after fabrication their optical properties cannot be easily modified. Here, we explore the concept of nanomechanical optical fibers where, in addition to the fiber transmission capability, the internal core structure of the fiber can also be controlled through sub-micron mechanical movements. The nanomechanical functionality of such fibers is demonstrated in the form of dual core optical fibers, in which the cores are independently suspended within the fiber. The movement-based optical change is large compared with traditional electro-optical effects and we show that optical switching of light from one core to the other is achieved through moving one core by just 8 nm.
