Abstract:Nanocrystalline tungsten oxide doped titanium dioxide (WOx-TiO2) powders were prepared by TiCl4 hydrolysis and characterized by XRD, XPS, UV-Vis absorption spectra and TEM. Results showed that WO, not only hindered the growth of TiO2 particles but also greatly increased the transformation temperature (>800 degrees C) from anatase to rutile during sintering; the dominant fraction of tungsten oxides was non-stoichiometric tungsten oxide (WxOy) with Wn+ (4<n<6), which could easily substitute Ti4+ in the lattice of TiO2. The light absorption band of TiO2 changed from the near UV to the visible light range (2.68 eV in 1.0 %WOx-TiO2) because of the tungsten impurity energy level induced by WxTi1-xO2. The photocatalysis experiments demonstrated that the MB in aqueous solution was successfully degraded within 1h using WOx-TiO2 with an optimal WOx dosage of 1% under visible light irradiation.

Microstructure and morphology of as–prepared WO3•1/3H2O NPs were investigated through X–ray diffraction patterns (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FT–IR) spectra, while porosity and bandgap through specific surface area and UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. It was found that Pd2+ ions played a crucial role in the formation of WO3•1/3H2O NPs, and thus a possible formation mechanism was proposed based on the growth processes. The photocatalytic property of WO3•1/3H2O NPs were evaluated on the basis of Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation in aqueous solutions under simulated visible irradiation. The photocatalytic experimental results indicated that as–prepared WO3•1/3H2O NPs exhibited much more superior photocatalytic activity by contrast to that of the commercial WO3.</dd></dl>

Study on visible light photocatalytic performance of nano tungsten trioxide

Abstract:In this paper, With sodium tungstate used as raw materials, nano WO(3) was synthesized by using sol-gel methed and sintering methed, and characterized by XRD, DRS and BET. With the condition of pH=2.0, visible light irradiation and oxygen as electron acceptor, the photocatalytic activity of nano WO(3) was investigated with methyl orange as goal degradation. The degradation efficiency reached to 68.3%. The nano WO(3) prepared by sol-gel method has favorable photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic activity increased with the decrease of particle size and the increase of cystal level and S(BET). The photocatalytic activity on degradation efficiency was greatly affected by the concentration of electron acceptor and the solution acidity. The nano WO(3) could be used circularly as photocatalysts.

Abstract:Three-dimensionally ordered mesoporous WO3 was successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method using mesoporous silica KIT-6 as a hard template and phosphotungstic acid as a precursor. The tungsten oxide after removal of silica template was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Investigations of optical and photoelectrochemical properties showed that the mesoporous WO3 was a n-type semiconductor with a band gap of 2.6eV and demonstrated prompt, steady, and reproducible photocurrent responses during repeated on/off cycles of visible light illumination (λ>420nm). The mesoporous WO3 modified by platinum nanoparticles could be used as a stable photocatalyst for photoinducing O2 evolution. Under visible light irradiation, the average O2 evolution rate is 34.5μmolg−1h−1 in the presence of an electron acceptor IO3−. This work demonstrated a potential application of using mesoporous WO3 modified by platinum nanoparticles as a novel photocatalyst in the field of solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by thermal decomposition of ammonium tungstate loading on g-C3N4. The as prepared nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, UV–vis, photoluminescence spectra (PL) and TEM. The XRD results indicate that the g-C3N4 decomposed completely with WO3 remaining at calcination temperature higher than 550°C. The WO3 prepared at temperature below 750°C exhibits orthorhombic phase, and monoclinic phase at temperature higher than 850°C. The UV–vis absorption onset wavelength of the obtained samples is approximately 470nm, and the absorption intensity increases with calcination temperature, and reaches a maximum at 750°C. The as prepared WO3 powders, loaded with 0.5wt% Pt as cocatalyst, were used as photocatalysts for O2 evolution from an aqueous KIO3 solution. The WO3 nanoparticles prepared from ammonium tungstate loading on g-C3N4 showed photocatalytic activity in O2 evolution up to 77 times higher than that of WO3 samples prepared from ammonium tungstate without loading on g-C3N4.

Abstract:We develop a facile and low-cost hydrothermal method to prepare WO3 nanostructures and demonstrate their applications as high-performance photoanodes for solar water oxidation. This present method allow us readily tune the morphology of WO3 nanostructures. By simply adjusting the constitution of the solution, WO3 nanoparticles (NPs-a), cubic-like nanoparticles (NCs) and another nanoparticles (NPs-b) can be obtained on F doped SnO2 glass substrates. Moreover, these WO3 nanostructures exhibit remarkable photoelectrochemical activities under the light irradiation and the WO3 NCs have the best performance than the others due to the enhanced light absorption ability and increased carrier density.

Abstract:Tungsten oxide dispersed on silica (WO3/SiO2) as photocatalysts was prepared by sol–gel method and characterized with various techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV Raman spectroscopy (UV Raman), UV–vis spectroscopy (UV–vis), N2-adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The characterization results show that most of tungsten oxide species are present as nanoparticles, which are highly dispersed on the surface of silica. Compared to bulk WO3, WO3/SiO2 exhibits relatively high visible-light-driven O2 evolution activity in the presence of Fe3+ ions as sacrificial reagents. Interestingly, it is found that WO3/SiO2 also shows H2 evolution activity with methanol as sacrificial reagents under UV light. The high photocatalytic O2 evolution and unexpected H2 generation properties of WO3/SiO2 could be correlated with the presence of highly dispersed WO3 nanoparticles and their interface W–O–Si like species.

Abstract:Herein, sandwich structured tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanoplate arrays were first synthesized for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting via a facile hydrothermal method followed by an annealing treatment. It was demonstrated that the annealing temperature played an important role in determining the morphology and crystal phase of the WO3 film. Only when the hydrothermally prepared precursor was annealed at 500 °C could the sandwich structured WO3 nanoplates be achieved, probably due to the crystalline phase transition and increased thermal stress during the annealing process. The sandwich structured WO3 photoanode exhibited a photocurrent density of 1.88 mA cm(-2) and an incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) as high as 65% at 400 nm in neutral Na2SO4 solution under AM 1.5G illumination. To our knowledge, this value is one of the best PEC performances for WO3 photoanodes. Meanwhile, simultaneous hydrogen and oxygen evolution was demonstrated for the PEC water splitting. It was concluded that the high PEC performance should be attributed to the large electrochemically active surface area and active monoclinic phase. The present study can provide guidance to develop highly efficient nanostructured photoelectrodes with the favorable morphology.

Abstract:Hydrogen production from photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting using semiconductor photocatalysts has attracted great attention to realize clean and renewable energy from solar energy. The visible light response of WO3 with a long hole diffusion length (similar to 150 nm) and good electron mobility (similar to 12 cm(2) V-1 s(-1)) makes it suitable as the photoanode. However, WO3 suffers from issues including rapid recombination of photoexcited electron-hole pairs, photo-corrosion during the photocatalytic process due to the formation of peroxo-species, sluggish kinetics of photogenerated holes, and slow charge transfer at the semiconductor/electrolyte interface. This work highlights the approaches to overcome these drawbacks of WO3 photoanodes, including: (i) the manipulation of nanostructured WO3 photoanodes to decrease the nanoparticle size to promote hole migration to the WO3/electrolyte interface which benefits the charge separation; (ii) doping or introducing oxygen vacancies to improve electrical conductivity; exposing high energy crystal surfaces to promote the consumption of photogenerated holes on the high-active crystal face, thereby suppressing the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes; (iii) decorating with co-catalysts to reduce the overpotential which inhibits the formation of peroxo-species; (iv) other methods such as coupling with narrow band semiconductors to accelerate the charge separation and controlling the crystal phase via annealing to reduce defects. These approaches are reviewed with detailed examples.
Nanoporous WO3 Films Synthesized by Tuning Anodization Conditions for Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

Abstract:Morphology engineering is of prime significance in designing semiconductor photoelectrodes for efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) fuel generation. Herein, we report a strategy to fabricate nanostructured tungsten oxide films using anodic oxidation of tungsten and their performance as photoanodes for PEC water splitting. A solution of an organic compound, dimethyl sulfoxide, with hydrofluoric acid was used as the electrolyte. The anodization parameters such as voltage and electrolyte temperature were found to have a critical influence in determining the porous nature and dimensions of the resulting oxide film. Anodization conducted at a voltage similar to 10 V and a temperature similar to 40 degrees C led to the formation of compact tungsten oxide films due to the low strength of the electric field partially responsible for the porous morphology development. The surface of the film became porous at elevated temperatures. At higher voltages, a thin nanoporous film atop a thicker compact layer was formed; however, the structure became more disordered and less porous when the electrolyte temperature was increased. The study demonstrated that by adjusting the voltage and temperature, the oxide film morphology could be varied from a compact layer to a porous structure resembling nanotubes. The films heat treated at 500 degrees C attained the monoclinic phase of WO3. The PEC performance was influenced strongly by the morphology of the films. The films with nanotube like morphology yielded incident photon to current conversion efficiency values of over 40%. This study would provide a practical basis for developing optimal WO3 nanostructures for efficient PEC fuel generation.

Abstract:Tungsten oxide (WO3) has unique physicochemical properties. Although various synthetic methods have been proposed to fabricate tungsten oxide with different morphologies, methods of tailoring the tungsten oxide nanostructure toward new morphologies are still needed. In this work, a self-assembled WO3 center dot 0.33H(2)O nanoflower is synthesized using a dissolution and regeneration method. In such a two-step synthetic process, temperature, solvent, and reaction times are found to be the main parameters affecting the morphology of WO3 center dot 0.33H(2)O. The synthesized WO3 center dot 0.33H(2)O nanoflower exhibits a localized surface plasmon resonance effect and a high photocatalytic activity, which can be explained by the doping of W5+ and its morphology. Furthermore, this WO3 center dot 0.33H(2)O nanoflower can also be used as a gas sensor and has good selectivity and linearity towards acetone vapor in the range of 50-500 ppm.

Abstract:In the present work, nitrogen-doped tungsten oxide (WO 3) nanoporous photoelectrode was studied by photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic methods in order to evaluate the photoactivity and the possibility of its application in solar photocatalysis. WO 3 nanoporous photoelectrodes were prepared by anodization of tungsten foil in NH 4F/(NH 4) 2SO 4 electrolytes, followed by annealing in NH 3/N 2 to incorporate N as a dopant. The crystal structure, composition and morphology of pure and nitrogen doped WO 3 were compared using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that nitrogen can be doped successfully into WO 3 nanoporous photoelectrodes by controlling annealing temperature. Incident photon to current efficiency measurements carried out on PEC cell with N-doped WO 3 nanoporous photoelectrodes as anodes demonstrate a significant increase of photoresponse in the visible region compared to undoped WO 3 nanoporous photoelectrodes prepared at similar conditions. In particular, the photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation for newly synthesized N-doped WO 3 nanoporous photoelectrodes were investigated by degradation of methyl orange. The photoelectrocatalytic activity of N-doped WO 3 nanoporous photoelectrodes was 1.8-fold enhancement compared with pure WO 3 nanoporous photoelectrodes. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
A Novel Approach to Synthesize the Amorphous Carbon-Coated WO3 with Defects and Excellent Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract:Amorphous carbon-coated tungsten oxide nanocrystals were synthesized via the ultra-rapid solution combustion synthesis method with low-cost, non-toxic starting materials. The amount of glucose played an important role in the synthesis of WO3-x with a suitable amount of carbon. Carbon-coated tungsten oxide existed in the form of round particles with size of ~150nm and the WO3-x nanorods with the length of ~20nm and diameter of 5nm. After oxidization by H2O2, the WO3-x particles were changed into WO3 with a large amount and variety of defects and kept the original size and nanorod structure. This characteristic resulted in an excellent visible driven photocatalytic performance, and it took about 40min to degrade the methylene blue (100mL; 80mgL−1, MB). Moreover, the material demonstrated good photocatalytic stability under visible light after 5 recycling degradation of MB. The interesting reaction mechanism and the photocatalytic mechanism were studied in this paper. Our study is helpful to design the new photocatalysts, which will have a great application potential in the fields of environmental purification and clean energy.
Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation on WO3 Nanoflake Films by Coupling with Amorphous TiO2

Abstract:High surface states induced photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity and stability issue is the major performance bottleneck for nanostructured WO3 photoanode. Here we report that amorphous TiO2 (alpha-TiO2) be used as passivator to modify the surface states of WO3 nanoflakes film for improving its PEC water oxidation performance. In comparison with bare WO3 film, the alpha-TiO2-coupled WO3 (alpha-TiO2/WO3) film is of higher PEC water oxidation activity and stability. The photocurrent on alpha-TiO2/WO3 film photoanode is improved by 2 times that reached 1.4mA/cm(2) in 0.1 M Na2SO4 solution at 0.8 V (vs. SCE). After alpha-TiO2 coupling, the UV-vis absorption edge and intensity of WO3 film do not change obviously, but the foration and oxidation kinetics of H2O2 on WO3 photoanode are modified. The density functional theory calculations indicate the monoclini WO3(002) has a surface energy of 1.17J/m(2), whereas the alpha-TiO2/ WO3(002) with a much lower surface energy of 0.3 J/m(2). Additionally, the length of Ti-O bond of alpha-TiO2 is changed from the initial 1.929 <(A)overcircle> to a shorter length of 1.886 <(A)overcircle> and a longer length of 2.290 <(A)overcircle> in alpha-TiO2/ WO3(002) through the O2--W6+ bonding effect at alpha-TiO2/WO3 interface. Therefore, the enhanced PEC water oxidation performance on alpha-TiO2/WO3 film can be attributed to that alpha-TiO2 passivates the surface states of WO3 nanoflakes film, and the formation of H2O2 from the photoexcited-electrons/dissolved-oxygen route is depressed and the PEC oxidation of H2O2 is accelerated. Pt Nanoparticle and CdS Quantum Dot Assisted WO3 Nanowires Grown on Flexible Carbon Fibers for Efficient Oxygen Production

Abstract:One-dimensional semiconductor nanomaterials are considered to be promising photocatalysts due to their large surface-to-volume ratio and high charge separation efficiency. Here, a Pt nanoparticle and CdS quantum dot (QD) co-decorated one-dimensional WO3 heterostructure was fabricated on flexible carbon fibers for water oxidation via a facile method. WO3 nanowires (NWs), with their advantage of resilience to photo-corrosion effects in aqueous solution, serve as the main photocatalyst; Pt nanoparticles and CdS QDs act as the co-photocatalyst. It was found that the photocurrent density of this novel nanostructure is about 5 times higher than that of pure WO3 under visible light irradiation. Significantly, the yield of O2 after the 5.5 h reaction time with the assistance of AgNO3 reaches 1 μmol. This work not only provides a conceptual blueprint for the design of a one dimensional heterostructure photocatalyst on flexible substrate to ameliorate its recyclability but also offers an excellent alternative material for application in renewable energy.

Abstract:The simple preparation of efficient nano-photoanodes has been a key issue in the development of photoelectrochemical water splitting. In this work, a convenient and seed layer-free hydrothermal approach has been developed to synthesize vertically aligned porous WO3 nanoflakes on a fluorine-doped tin oxide conductive glass substrate. The morphology of WO3 nanoflakes could be manipulated by changing the annealing time, which further affected the performance of WO3 nanoflakes as photoanodes. Under optimum conditions, the obtained photoanode can lead to a high photocurrent density of 2.34 mA cm(-2) at 1.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl under one sun irradiation (100 mW cm(-2)) and an incident photon to current conversion efficiency of 60% at 300 nm. The excellent photoelectrochemical performance can be mainly attributed to the larger active surface area, single crystal structure with an optimum thickness and the exposed highly active facets.

Abstract:A mixed metal oxide W-TiO2 nanopowder photocatalyst was prepared by using the sol–gel method with a broad range of elemental compositions x = CW/(CW + CTi), including TiO2 and WO3. The material was structurally characterized and evaluated in adsorption and photocatalytic processes by testing its removal capacity of a representative pollutant methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solutions and under UV-A and sunlight illuminations. The nanopowders appeared to be more effective adsorbents than pure TiO2 and WO3 materials, showing a maximum at 15 mol% W, which was set as the tungsten solubility limit in anatase titania. At the same time, the photocatalytic decomposition of MB peaked at 2 mol% W. The examination of different compositions showed that the most effective MB removal took place at 15 mol% W, which was attributed to the combined action of adsorption and heterogeneous photocatalysis. Moreover, MB decomposition under sunlight was stronger than under UV-A, suggesting photocatalyst activation by visible light. The pollutant removal efficiency of the material with 15 mol% W was enhanced by a factor of ~10 compared to pure TiO2 at the beginning of the process, which shows its high potential for use in depollution processes in emergency cases of a great pollutant leak. As a result, a Wx=0.15-TiO2 catalyst could be of high interest for wastewater purification in industrial plants.

Abstract:In this work, a simple strategy to fabricate amorphous carbon-coated tungsten oxide with oxygen vacancies (WO3−x/C, 0 < x < 1) via pyrolysis of hybrid-polyoxometalates (hybrid-POMs) in nitrogen atmosphere is reported. TGA, XRD, Raman, FTIR, SEM, TEM, EDS, XPS and BET have been used to characterize the as-prepared products. The results showed that their compositions, microstructures and concentrations of oxygen vacancies were closely related with the species of organic amines in the hybrid-POMs. When the WO3−x/C composites were used as catalysts for degradation of dyes such as methylene blue, methyl orange and Rhodamine B under visible light irradiation, they showed much enhanced photocatalytic abilities compared to that of WO3 and P25, which could be ascribed to the coating of WO3 by amorphous carbon and the construction of defects (oxygen vacancy) in WO3. The synthetic strategy presented in our work is simple and shows a great potential in fabricating efficient transition metal-based composites for photocatalysis applications and so on.

Abstract:Hexagonal nanoflower WO3 arrays have been prepared by using RCOO(-) as the structure directing agent in the microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis process. The photoelectrochemical performance of the synthesized hexagonal flower-like WO3 electrode was enhanced compared with the block-like WO3 film.

Abstract:To address the energy crisis and environmental problems, the applications of solar energy have received intensive attention. Converting solar energy to hydrogen using a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell is one of the most promising approaches to meet future energy demands. As an earth abundant metal oxide, tungsten trioxide (WO3), which has a moderate band gap (2.5-2.7 eV), ideal valence band position, and high resistance to photocorrosion, has been widely utilized in PEC photoanodes. To obtain a WO3 photoanode with high PEC efficiency, tremendous efforts have been made to improve the light absorption capacity, charge carrier dynamics, and oxygen evolution activity. In this report, the recent advances in WO3 photoanode optimization, including morphology design, dopants doping, heterojunction fabrication, and surface modification are summarized. In this review, these developments and representative applications of WO3 photoanodes in unassisted water splitting devices are also discussed. Finally, perspectives on the significant challenges and future prospects for the development of WO3 photoanodes for PEC water splitting are provided.
