Abstract:In this paper, we report distinct enhancement of surface-state emissions (SSEs) of colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) via coupling to localized plasmons (LPs) in Ag nanostructures. The roles of oleic acid (OA) ligand on QDs in the formation of Ag nanostructures and in the intense enhancement of SSEs of CdSe QDs are explored. We find that OA ligand on CdSe QDs plays a critical role in modifying the morphology of the contacted Ag, which consequently impacts the coupling of QD emitters with LPs in Ag. A systematic study of size effect of QDs on coupling of SSEs with LPs shows that as-deposited small Ag particles favorably enhance the SSEs of small-size CdSe QDs. The OA ligand on QDs yields better Ag crystallinity and clear corners during the annealing process; therefore, it promotes reshaping of small Ag particles into larger ones, favorable to enhance the SSEs of large-size CdSe QDs. The annealed QDs/Ag hybrid structures are more stable than the unannealed ones due to the loss of the OA ligand in the heating process. The selective coupling of QD emitters with LPs in Ag nanostructures allows feasible realization of microscale fluorescent color patterns. The approach of OA-assisted modification of plasmonic properties of Ag nanostructures provides a new route to synthesizing bright luminescence materials and devices that use colloidal QDs.
Electroluminescent Characteristics of CdSe Colloidal Quantum Dots

Abstract:Electroluminescent (EL) devices with an ITO/ZnS/CdSe/ZnS/Al structure were fabricated using chemically synthesized colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) as active layer. The size of the CdSe QDs is about 4.3 nm measured by a transmission electron microscope. Scanning electron microscope characterization shows smooth surfaces of ZnS layers and Al electrodes. CdSe (111) and ZnS (111) diffraction peaks are observed in the X-ray diffraction patterns, verifying the incorporation of CdSe QDs and ZnS insulator materials in the devices. Room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra reveal that the CdSe QDs' emission peak is located at 614 rim. EL measurements at room temperature show a broad emission band ranging from 450 nm to 850 nm with a peak wavelength located at about 800 nm. Finally, the light emitting mechanism for the EL devices is proposed and the discrepancy between PL and EL spectra is interpreted.

Abstract:Highly luminescent colloidal nanocrystals have wide applications in bioimaging and various optoelectronic devices. Herein we report a facile and mild procedure by combining S2- treatment and binary ligand passivation, which can efficiently enhance the luminescent property of CdSe nanocrystals at room temperature. The photoluminescence quantum yield of as-treated CdSe nanocrystals exhibits drastic enhancement (e.g., 188 times for CdSe nanorods) after this dual-passivation treatment. The methodology proposed here can be applied to various CdSe nanocrystals, regardless of their sizes, shapes, and crystal structures.

Abstract:Luminescent CuInS2 nanocrystals have been synthesized in dodecanethiol using air-stable precursors. The nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties of the CuInS2 nanocrystals can be controlled by changing the reaction conditions, such as reaction time, temperature, and addition of ligands. It was found that the steady-state photoluminescence spectrum of the close-packed CuInS2 nanocrystals on glass substrate peaked at longer wavelength than that of the colloidal ones and the close-packed nanocrystals possessed a shorter luminescence decay time. This behavior was explained on the basis of Förster resonant energy transfer due to the shorter distance between nanocrystals on substrate.

Abstract:We have prepared nearly monodisperse CdSe nanocrystallites with diameters of 1-4 nm from the rapid pyrolysis of organometallic precursors in a hot coordinating solvent. The nanocrystal structures have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. from the absorption spectrum, we have observed the prominent peak of 1S-1S excitonic transition, which is obviously blue-shifted from the bulk bandgap and the largest shift is about 1.25 eV. We have used a theoretical model based on the tight binding approximation to analyze the quantum size effect of these nanocrystallites. The results have been compared with those of the effective mass approximation model.

Abstract:Here we report a facile one-pot method for the preparation of high-quality CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) in aqueous solution under an air atmosphere. Compared with the traditional use of NaHSe or H2 Se, the more stable sodium selenite is utilized as the Se source for preparing highly luminescent CdSe nanocrystals. By using mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) as the capping agent and borate-citrate acid as the buffering solution, CdSe nanocrystals with high quantum yield (up to 70%) have been synthesized conveniently. The influence of different experimental parameters, such as the pH of the precursor solution, the molar ratio of Cd(2+) to Na2 SeO3 and Cd(2+) to MSA on the CdSe nanocrystals, has been systematically investigated. The prepared CdSe NCs were spherical with a size of ~ 5 nm.

Abstract:White-light emitting (WLE) CdSe quantum dots (QDs) capped with oleic acid (OA) were synthesized and the effects of thermal annealing and photoactivation on the small CdSe QDs in (polymethyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were investigated. A bimodal size-distribution phenomenon induced by annealing at temperatures of approximate to 200 degrees C was observed. The phenomenon observed here is different from the result of large CdSe QDs with the similar treatment. The size-dependent property arises from the fact that smaller QDs have a higher surface energy than larger ones.[GRAPHICS]Annealing-induced bimodal size distribution results in a luminescence change of small CdSe QDs. Influence of Size and Surface State Emission on Photoluminescence of CdSe Quantum Dots under UV Irradiation

Abstract:Under UV irradiation, photo-oxidation occurs on the surface of CdSe quantum dots (QDs), thus modifying their QD optical properties. The influence of size and surface state (SS) emission on the photoluminescence (PL) evolution of CdSe QDs was investigated. Colorimetric study of the CdSe QD emission under UV irradiation indicates that the QD size and SS emission will influence the movement of chromaticity parameters. A photo-corrosion effect reduced the QD size and caused blue shift of the band edge (BE) peak. The irradiation-induced blue shift of QD emission always moves the corresponding chromaticity coordinate counterclockwise in the chromaticity diagram. For CdSe QDs with a dominant SS peak, the different evolution between BE and SS peak under UV irradiation will substantively influence the transformation of emission color: the chromaticity coordinate moved faster when PL increased than that when it decreased. Generally, the emission color of CdSe QDs with relatively large size and weak SS peaks is more stable in irradiation process.

Abstract:Uniform CdS nanoparticles from 4 to 8nm have been synthesized via a quaternary reverse micelle method. The size of the nanoparticles can be controlled and modulated by adjusting the W (W=[H2O]/[CTAB]) value. In order to eliminate the surface defects and improve the optical properties of CdS nanoparticles, the reflux treatment was employed. Compared with the freshly prepared CdS nanoparticles which mainly presented the broad defect emission, the nanoparticles treated by reflux exhibited narrow band size dependent exciton emission and its intensity was enhanced greatly, due to the effective surface modification. The possible mechanism of effective surface modification is discussed and the highest quantum yield of CdS nanoparticles at room temperature is estimated to be 11%.

Abstract:Coated CdSe/CdS nanocrystals have been synthesized through a new reaction routine in micelle solution. High-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) images demonstrated the monodispersity and core-shell structure of CdSe/CdS nanocrystals. After CdSe nanocrystals were passivated by CdS shell, the reduced photoluminescence (PL) intensity of surface states and enhanced band-edge emission have been observed. The enhanced photo-chemical stability of coated CdSe/CdS nanocrystals has also been demonstrated from photo oxidation experiments. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The size-dependent structures and optical properties of CdSeS nanoclusters in water medium are investigated. The stability of different size-dependent Cd$_n$Se$_m$S$_p$ nanoclusters (up to n=6) is studied using density functional theory/time-dependent density functional theory (DFT/TDDFT). The computed results for ground (S$_0$) and excited (S$_1$, S$_2$, S$_3$) states are experimentally verified through UV-Vis spectroscopy. Computed ab initio results suggest that CdSeS clusters are significantly more hyperpolarizable compared to CdX (X= S, Se, Te) clusters. Structure dependent response properties are also observed, especially for n>3. Larger hyperpolarizabilities ($\beta$ and$\gamma$), charge variation and orbital analysis establish Cd$_4$Se$_m$S$_p$ clusters, as nonlinear optically active quantum dots (QDs).

Abstract:We report a new and low cost method to synthesize colloidal CdSe and coated CdSe/CuSe nanocrystals in aqueous solution. The results of structural characterization and optical measurements indicated that the good size control had been achieved. The photoluminescence study confirmed the surface passivation of CdSe core with CuSe outlayer and revealed strong enhancement of band-edge luminescence due to the quantum confinement in coated CdSe/CuSe nanocrystals.

Abstract:CdSe magic-size clusters with close-shell surface and fixed molecular formula are well-known in the size range between similar to 1 and 3 nm. By applying high concentration of cadmium alkanoates as ligands, a conventional synthetic system for CdSe nanocrystals was tuned to discriminate completion from initiation of atomic flat facets. This resulted in similar to 4-13 nm CdSe nanocrystals with hexahedral shape terminated with low-index facets, namely three (100), one (110), and two (111) facets. These low-symmetry (C-s group with single mirror plane) yet monodisperse hexahedra were found to be persistent not only in a broad size range but also under typical synthetic temperatures for growth of both CdSe and CdS. Atomic motion on the surface of the nanocrystals under enhanced ligand dynamics initiated intraparticle ripening without activating interparticle ripening, which converted the hexahedral nanocrystals to monodisperse spherical ones. This new synthetic strategy rendered optimal color purity of photoluminescence (PL) of the CdSe and CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals, with the ensemble PL peak width comparable with that of a corresponding single dot.

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals are promising candidates for quantum light sources, yet their application has been impeded by photoluminescence instability due to blinking and spectral diffusion. This study introduces a new category of cube-shaped CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals with exceptionally stable photoluminescence characteristics. Under continuous excitation, the emissive quantum state remained consistent without alterations of the charge state for 4000 s, and the average photon energy variation stayed within the bounds of spectral resolution throughout this extended duration. Systematic examination of single-nanocrystal photoluminescence, upon variation of the core and shell dimensions, revealed that a thicker CdS shell and increased core edge length significantly curtail spectral diffusion, considering that the nanocrystals possess well-controlled CdSe-CdS and facet-ligand interfaces. This study advances the optimization of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals as high-performance quantum light sources.

Abstract:Using trioctylphosphine (TOP) as the ligand of the Se source and oleic acid (OA) as the ligand of the Cd precursor, high-quality CdSe nanocrystals were synthesized in the noncoordinating solvent octadecene (ODE) with the standard airless techniques. The initial TOP:Se, OA:Cd and Cd:Se molar ratios are determinative factors for the growth kinetics, crystal size and size distribution of the as-synthesized CdSe nanocrystals. A large excess of OA, TOP and Se, were found necessary to achieve a narrow absorption profile. By simply changing the amount of the two ligands or the growth temperature, we are able to not only control the balance of the initial nucleation and the subsequent growth of CdSe nanocrystals, but also tune the crystal size and size distribution.

Abstract:The morphological manipulation, structural characterization, and photoluminescence properties of different CdSe nanocrystals are reported. Several different CdSe structures, including nanowires, nanorods, nanoparticles, and tetrapod crystals, have been grown on silicon substrates by means of simple, Si-assisted chemical vapor deposition. By manipulating the growth driving force (i.e., the degree of supersaturation), the morphology of the CdSe nanocrystals can be varied sequentially from nanowires/nanorods to nanoparticles to tetrapod structures. The optical properties of the CdSe nanocrystals are investigated using photoluminescence spectroscopy. Some thermodynamic models are proposed to explain the results.
Excitonic characteristics of blue-emitting quantum dot materials in group II-VI using hybrid time-dependent density functional theory

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) of group II-VI are key ingredients of next-generation QD light-emitting diodes technology for display and lighting, yet the understanding of their luminescent characteristics are far from being mature. Using a hybrid time-dependent density functional theory, we have studied the electronic and excitonic properties of blue-emitting colloidal QDs within group II-VI containing a thousand atoms or more, including CdSe, CdS, ZnSe, and ZnS QDs, considering both quantum confinement and surface ligand effects. It is found that the calculated optical gaps are in excellent quantitative agreement with experiment, irrespective of the QD nature. Scaling laws of size-dependent energy gaps governed solely by quantum confinement effects have further been explored at both single-particle level and correlated excitonic level for all QDs. With concurrently stoichiometric control and enhancing quantum confinement effects, we have predicted an unusual switching of symmetry character of the highest occupied molecular orbital state from a Γ3 to a Γ1 symmetry at ultrasmall size (∼1 nm) for all QDs. After the switching, pronounced linearly polarized band-edge excitonic emission is activated. The radiative exciton decay lifetime is found to increase monotonically with increasing the QD size and tends to saturate at larger sizes. Finally, we have explored the surface passivation mechanism of inorganic chloride ligand, and identified various favorable Cd-Cl bonding configurations which enable an effective surface passivation resembling the commonly applied pseudohydrogen passivation scheme. We find that chloride ligand serves as a hole delocalization ligand and tends to redshift the absorption spectra, reduce the absorption intensity, and significantly enhance the exciton decay lifetime. Our results provide a guideline for spectroscopic studies of excitonic characteristics of colloidal QDs within group II-VI.

Abstract:CdSe nanoclusters overcoated with CdS shell were prepared with macapoacetic acid as stabilizer. The optical properties of CdSe nanoclusters and the influence of CdS shell on the electronic structures of CdSe cores were studied by optical absorption, photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectroscopies. Based on PL and PLE results and the theoretical calculation on fine structure of bandedge exciton, a model of formation of excimer within the small clusters was proposed to explain the large Stokes shift of luminescence from absorption edge observed in PL results.

Abstract:The effects of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) size, excitation wavelength, and fluorescence wavelength on surface plasmon enhanced photoluminescence (PL) have been investigated. The PL of CdSe nanocrystals on Au colloids changes from quenching to enhancement as the size of Au NPs increases from 25 to 45 nm. For the Au NPs larger than 45 nm, the PL enhancement occurs and the enhancement factor is found to be dependent on Au NPs size and excitation wavelength. Besides Au NPs size, the fluorescence wavelength of CdSe nanocrystals is also observed to affect the competition between PL quenching and enhancement.
