Abstract:In this work we present new fundamental tools for studying the variations of the Willmore functional of immersed surfaces into $R^m$. This approach gives for instance a new proof of the existence of a Willmore minimizing embedding of an arbitrary closed surface in arbitrary codimension. We explain how the same approach can solve constraint minimization problems for the Willmore functional. We show in particular that, for a given closed surface and a given conformal class for this surface, there is an immersion in $R^m$, away possibly from isolated branched points, which minimizes the Willmore energy among all possible Lipschitz immersions in $R^m$ having an $L^2-$bounded second fundamental form and realizing this conformal class. This branched immersion is either a smooth Conformal Willmore branched immersion or an isothermic branched immersion. We show that branched points do not exist whenever the minimal energy in the conformal class is less than $8\pi$ and that these immersions extend to smooth conformal Willmore embeddings or global isothermic embeddings of the surface in that case. Finally, as a by-product of our analysis, we establish that inside a compact subspace of the moduli space the following holds : weak limit of Palais Smale Willmore sequences are Conformal Willmore, that weak limits of Palais Smale sequences of Conformal Willmore are either Conformal Willmore or Global Isothermic and finally we observe also that weakly converging Palais Smale sequences of Global Isothermic Immersions are Global Isothermic. The analysis developped along the paper - in particular these last results - opens the door to the possibility of constructing new critical saddle points of the Willmore functional without or with constraints using min max methods

Abstract:In this paper, we first extend the classical Hélein's convergence theorem to a sequence of rescaled branched conformal immersions. By virtue of this local convergence theorem, we study the blow-up behavior of a sequence of branched conformal immersions of a closed Riemann surface in ℝn with uniformly bounded areas and Willmore energies. Furthermore, we prove that the integral identity of Gauss curvature is true.

Abstract:We first prove that a properly immersed static n-dimensional submanifold (Delta H = 0) with restricted growth of the curvature at infinity in Fn+p(c)(c >= 0) is totally umbilical if the Will more functional is pinched by a positive constant depending only on n. Secondly, we obtain a global rigidity theorem for Willmore surfaces in the sphere. Thirdly, we give a lower bound on the lifespan of the surface diffusion flow in Fn+p(c). Finally, we get the longtime existence and convergence of the surface diffusion flow in Fn+p(c) (c >= 0) under the small initial Willmore energy condition.

Abstract:Let M n be a smooth, compact manifold without boundary, and F 0: M n → R n+1 a smooth immersion which is convex. The one-parameter families F(·, t): M n × [0, T) → R n+1 of hypersurfaces M t n = F(·, t)(M n ) satisfy an initial value problem dt/dF(·, t) = −H k (·, t)ν(·, t), F(·, 0) = F 0(·), where H is the mean curvature and ν(·, t) is the outer unit normal at F(·, t), such that −H ν = $\overrightarrow H $ is the mean curvature vector, and k > 0 is a constant. This problem is called H k -flow. Such flow will develop singularities after finite time. According to the blow-up rate of the square norm of the second fundamental forms, the authors analyze the structure of the rescaled limit by classifying the singularities as two types, i.e., Type I and Type II. It is proved that for Type I singularity, the limiting hypersurface satisfies an elliptic equation; for Type II singularity, the limiting hypersurface must be a translating soliton.

Abstract:Let f:ℂ→ℝ^3 be a complete Willmore immersion with ∫ _Σ|A_f|^2<+∞ . We will show that if f is the limit of an embedded surface sequence, then f is a plane. Abstract:We consider surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$ of type ${\mathbb S}^2$ which minimize the Willmore functional with prescribed isoperimetric ratio. The existence of smooth minimizers was proved by Schygulla (Archive Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2012). In the singular limit when the isoperimetric ratio converges to zero, he showed convergence to a double round sphere in the sense of varifolds. Here we give a full blowup analysis of this limit, showing that the two spheres are connected by a catenoidal neck. Besides its geometric interest, the problem was studied as a simplified model in the theory of cell membranes, see e.g. Berndl, Lipowsky, Seifert (Physical Review A, 1991).

Abstract:In this paper, we study the weak compactness of the set of conformal metrics in any Riemann surface without boundary whose Calabi energy and area are uniformly bounded. We prove that for any sequence of such metrics, there alwasy exists a subsequence which converges in H\sp{2,2}_\sb{loc} everywhere except a finite number of bubble points. Blowup analysis near bubble shows that the bubble on bubble phenomenon occurs. The limit metric gives rise to a tree structure decomposition, where each node in the tree represents a limit metric of a subsequence at that stage while the edge of the tree structure represents the neck on the process of blowing up. We also show that the number of the nodes which have more than three edges attached is finite.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the blow-up of Willmore surfaces. By using the 3-circle theorem, we prove a decay estimate of the second fundamental form along the neck region. This estimate provides a new perspective and streamlined proofs to a few key results in this field, such as the energy identity(quantization), removable singularities and gap theorem.

Abstract:We study various aspects related to boundary regularity of complete properly embedded Willmore surfaces in H3, particularly those related to assumptions on boundedness or smallness of a certain weighted version of the Willmore energy. We prove, in particular, that small energy controls C1 boundary regularity. We examine the possible lack of C1 convergence for sequences of surfaces with bounded Willmore energy and find that the mechanism responsible for this is a bubbling phenomenon, where energy escapes to infinity.

Abstract:Very little is yet known regarding the Willmore flow of surfaces with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We consider surfaces with a rotational symmetry as initial data and prove a global existence and convergence result for solutions of the Willmore flow with initial data below an explicit, sharp energy threshold. Strikingly, this threshold depends on the prescribed boundary conditions - it can even be made to be $0$. We show sharpness for some critical boundary data by constructing surfaces above this energy threshold so that the corresponding Willmore flow develops a singularity. Finally, a Li-Yau inequality for open curves in $\mathbb{H}^2$ is proved.

Abstract:It is well-known that the Willmore flow of closed spherical immersions exists globally in time and converges if the initial datum has Willmore energy below $8\pi$ - exactly the Li-Yau energy threshold below which all closed immersions are embedded. Extending the Li-Yau inequality for closed surfaces via Simon's monotonicity formula also for surfaces with boundary, given Dirichlet boundary conditions, one obtains an energy threshold $C_{\mathrm{LY}}$ below which surfaces with this boundary are embedded. By a slight modification, one obtains a threshold $C_{\mathrm{LY}}^{\mathrm{rot}}$ below which surfaces of revolution satisfying the boundary data have no self-intersections on the rotation axis.

Abstract:This paper studies the existence and decay estimates of weak solutions to the surface growth equation. First, the global existence of weak solutions is obtained by the approximation method introduced by Majda and Bertozzi [Vorticity and Incompressible Flow (Cambridge University Press, 2001)]. Then, we derive the L2-decay rates of weak solutions via the Fourier splitting method under the assumption that u0∈L1(R)∩L2(R). For more general cases, i.e., u0∈L2(R), the behavior of weak solutions in L2 is obtained by the spectral theory of self-adjoint operators.

Abstract:We study sequences f_k:Σ_k →^n of conformally immersed, compact Riemann surfaces with fixed genus and Willmore energy W(f) ≤Λ. Assume that Σ_k converges to Σ in moduli space, i.e. ϕ_k^∗(Σ_k) →Σ as complex structures for diffeomorphisms ϕ_k. Then we construct a branched conformal immersion f:Σ→^n and Möbius transformations σ_k, such that for a subsequence σ_k ∘ f_k ∘ϕ_k → f weakly in W^2,2_loc away from finitely many points. For Λ < 8π the map f is unbranched. If the Σ_k diverge in moduli space, then we show lim inf_k →∞ W(f_k) ≥min(8π,ω^n_p). Our work generalizes results in to arbitrary codimension.

Abstract:A surface : → is called a Willmore surface if it is a criticalsurface of the Willmore functional ∫ ( − 2), where isthe mean curvature and is the square of the length of the secondfundamental form. It is well known that any minimal surface is aWillmore surface. The first nonminimal example of a flat Willmoresurface in higher codimension was obtained by Ejiri. This example whichcan be viewed as a tensor product immersion of (1) and a particularsmall circle in (1), and therefore is contained in (1) gives anegative answer to a question by Weiner. In this paper we generalize theabove mentioned example by investigating Willmore surfaces in (1)which can be obtained as a tensor product immersion of two curves. We inparticular show that in this case too, one of the curves has to be(1), whereas the other one is contained either in (1) or in (1). In the first case, we explicitly determine the immersion interms of elliptic functions, thus constructing infinetely many newnonminimal flat Willmore surfaces in . Also in the latter casewe explicitly include examples.

Abstract:In a recent work, F. Da Lio, M. Gianocca, and T. Rivière developped a new method to show upper semi-continuity results in geometric analysis, which they applied to conformally invariant Lagrangians in dimension $2$ (that include harmonic maps). In this article, we apply this method to show that the sum of the Morse index and the nullity of Willmore immersions is upper semi-continuous, provided that the limiting immersions and the bubbles are free of branch points. Our result covers the case of degenerating Riemann surfaces for which the ratio of the second residue (considered by P. Laurain and T. Rivière in their work on the energy quantization of Willmore surfaces) and the length of the minimal shrinking geodesic of the underlying sequence of Riemann surfaces is smaller than a universal constant.

Singularities and full convergence of the Möbius-invariant Willmore flow in the $3$-sphere

Abstract:In this article we continue our investigation of the Möbius-invariant Willmore flow, starting in arbitrary smooth and umbilic-free initial immersions $F_0$ which map some fixed compact torus into $\mathbb{R}^n$ respectively $\mathbb{S}^n$. We investigate the behavior of flow lines $\{F_t\}$ of the Möbius-invariant Willmore flow in $\mathbb{S}^3$ starting with Willmore energy below $8\pi$, as the time approaches the maximal time of existence $T_{max}(F_0)$ of $\{F_t\}$. We particularly investigate the formation of singularities of flow lines of the Möbius-invariant Willmore flow in both finite and infinite time. We will see that every limit surface of a flow line of the MIWF can be identified with the support of a certain integral $2$-varifold $\mu$ in $\mathbb{R}^4$ and that the support of this varifold $\mu$ has either degenerated to a point or is homeomorphic to either a sphere or a compact torus in $\mathbb{S}^3$. In the non-degenerate case in which the limit surface is a compact torus, it can be parametrized by a uniformly conformal bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism of class $(W^{2,2}\cap W^{1,\infty})(\Sigma)$. Under certain additional conditions on the considered flow line, such a non-degenerate limit surface of $\{F_t\}$ can be parametrized by a uniformly conformal diffeomorphism of class $W^{4,2}(\Sigma,\mathbb{R}^4)$. Finally, if the initial immersion $F_0$ of a flow line is assumed to parametrize a smooth Hopf-torus with Willmore energy smaller than $8\pi$, then we obtain stronger types of convergence of particular subsequences of $\{F_t\}$ to uniformly conformal $W^{4,2}$-parametrizations of certain limit Hopf-tori, and this insight yields a simple criterion for full $C^m$-convergence of such a flow line of the MIWF to a smooth parametrization of the Clifford-torus - up to a Möbius-transformation of $\mathbb{S}^3$ - for every fixed $m \in \mathbb{N}$.
