Abstract:In shale reservoirs, crude oil always involves a varying percentage of methane gas that may greatly affect the properties and the migration behavior of crude oil. In this work, to evaluate the effect of methane gas and to clarify the molecular mechanisms, the migration of oil/gas mixture in shale channels was characterized using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Specifically, the transport of oil with different methane fractions in a shale inorganic nano-pore throat was simulated. With analyzing the force that the oil undergoes when going across the nano-pore, the oil dynamic transport feature for different methane fractions was clarified. Then, the interfacial tension, the diffusion coefficient, and the interaction energy were calculated to give insights into the methane effects on oil transport. In addition, other oil-associated gases (ethane and propane) and the effect of temperature were studied and discussed. This work expands our knowledge of the oil and gas transport in nano-pore throat at the molecular level, and it is expected to facilitate future studies on the migration of fluids through space-confined channels.

Abstract:Oil production from shale has grown dramatically in North America, and has the potential to do so globally. Understanding the adsorption and transport of liquid hydrocarbon through nanopores of inorganic minerals is crucial not only to develop liquid-rich shale reservoirs, but also to grasp oil migration from deeply buried extremely low permeability source rocks. In this work, the adsorption and transport behavior of n-octane (pentane, dodecane) confined in nanoscale dolomite slit pores have been investigated by grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The adsorbed phase density, molecular-scale structures at the interface, self-diffusion are then calculated and analyzed by equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD). The number of adsorption layers is related to the size of pore. Increasing temperature will decrease the amount adsorbed, while pressures have little effect on amount adsorbed. Near the dolomite surface, the n-octane molecules adopt a preferential alignment parallel to the substrate, better packed and diffuse more slowly. Consider three alkanes, the long alkanes (octane, dodecane) are more easily to be adsorbed on dolomite surface. Lastly, the nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) have been used to study the pressure-driven flow of n-octane in dolomite slits, flow characterization, viscosity, and slip length are analyzed. A larger driving force will increase slip length, while having only a negligible impact on the effective viscosity of the n-octane.
Fast Mass Transport of Oil and Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Through Organic Nanopores in Shale

Abstract:Hydrocarbon production from shale has grown dramatically in North America, and has the potential to do so globally. Nanoporous organic matter is probably the dominant mode of porosity occurrence in productive shale systems, but the physics of liquid transport through organic-hosted pores is still ambiguous. In the present work, molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to study the static properties and pressure-driven flow behavior of pure liquid hydrocarbons (octane) and supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) confined in slit-shaped organic nanopores. Carbonaceous slits having apertures ranging from 1.5 to 11.2 nm were explored. A range of thermodynamic conditions, corresponding to the sedimentary reservoirs, were examined. Equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) enabled us to determine the density profile, from which we observed the layering structure of confined fluid and the preferential adsorption of scCO(2) relative to C8H18 and CH4. As the pore size increases, the structure of the adsorbed phase transforms from a single-file chain to four and three dense monolayers for C8H18 and scCO(2), respectively. Then we calculated, using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD), their velocity profiles and studied the hydrodynamics under a pressure gradient. We found that the velocity profiles in an organic slit tend to be pluglike, which deviates significantly from the parabolic profile in inorganic nanopores, and the flow exceeds predictions of the no-slip Poiseuille equation by 1-3 orders of magnitude. We proposed two models to characterize the flow behavior, each of which can be integrated into a bottom-up framework to mimic fluid transport in shale and estimate the apparent liquid permeability. The parameters in our models, slip length and apparent viscosity, are exponentially dependent on driving force, pore size, and temperature. Our results, which highlight the need for taking into account the different nature of organic matter and inorganic minerals in flow modeling, will shed light on the development of shale resources and, more generally, mass transfer in nanoporous materials. Abstract:Although the state of occurrence and characteristics of shale oil form the basis for studying the mobility of shale oil, studies on the state of occurrence and characteristics of shale oil, as well as factors affecting its mobility, are presently lacking. Molecular dynamics simulation is a very effective method for studying the state of occurrence of shale oil and the factors affecting its mobility. We used molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to study the adsorption behavior and distribution of shale oil within a nanoscale slit medium. Results show that fluid density is not uniform throughout the slit and that its oscillation from the solid wall surface to the central plane is attenuated, indicating distinct adsorbed layers and bulk-phase fluid. We studied the effects of slit aperture, temperature, pressure, oil composition, and slit medium on the volumes and densities of the adsorbed layers. We found that (a) there were multiple adsorbed layers of liquid hydrocarbons, (b) the number of adsorbed layers depended largely on the slit medium, slit size, and oil composition, (c) the adsorption propensity of heavier hydrocarbons were more pronounced, and (d) the adsorption capacity of the slit medium differed for different types of hydrocarbon molecules.

Hydrocarbon Transportation in Heterogeneous Shale Pores by Molecular Dynamic Simulation

Abstract:Shale oil in China is widely distributed and has enormous resource potential. The pores of shale are at the nanoscale, and traditional research methods encounter difficulty in accurately describing the fluid flow mechanism, which has become a bottleneck restricting the industrial development of shale oil in China. To clarify the distribution and migration laws of fluid microstructure in shale nanopores, we constructed a heterogeneous inorganic composite shale model and explored the fluid behavior in different regions of heterogeneous surfaces. The results revealed the adsorption capacity for alkanes in the quartz region was stronger than that in the illite region. When the aperture was small, solid-liquid interactions dominated; as the aperture increased, the bulk fluid achieved a more uniform and higher flow rate. Under conditions of small aperture/low temperature/low pressure gradient, the quartz region maintained a negative slip boundary. Illite was more hydrophilic than quartz; when the water content was low, water molecules formed a "liquid film" on the illite surface, and the oil flux percentages in the illite and quartz regions were 87% and 99%, respectively. At 50% water content, the adsorbed water in the illite region reached saturation, the quartz region remained unsaturated, and the difference in the oil flux percentage of the two regions decreased. At 70% water content, the adsorbed water in the two regions reached a fully saturated state, and a layered structure of "water-two-phase region-water" was formed in the heterogeneous nanopore. This study is of great significance for understanding the occurrence characteristics and flow mechanism of shale oil within inorganic nanopores.
Insights into adsorption and diffusion behavior of shale oil in slit nanopores: A molecular dynamics simulation study

Abstract:Nanoscale pores have been widely observed in shale plays. Within such a small scale pore, the interaction between fluid molecules and porewall surface becomes significant, and the adsorption state of shale fluids is quite different from that in conventional reservoirs. In this study, the method of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is applied to address the adsorption and diffusion behavior of shale oil in slit nanopores. Firstly, two different models of organic graphene nanopore and inorganic quartz nanopore are constructed, and three typical components of alkanes (methane, propane, and n-octane) are selected to represent the shale oil fluids. Based on this model, the effects of fluid composition, nanopore type and porewall wettability on the adsorption and diffusion behavior of shale fluids are discussed. For the simulation method of hydrophilic porewall surface, in this study, a series of carbonyl functional group is grafted on graphene surface to enhance the hydrophilicity of porewall surface. Results indicate that the multicomponent alkanes in nanoscale pores can form a multilayer adsorption state. The heavy components will occupy the adsorption sites around the porewall surface. In contrast, the adsorbed amount of light components at porewall surface can be almost negligible. However, as the effect of multicomponent fluid is considered, a significant difference for the properties of adsorption layer and the mean square displacement (MSD) value can be observed compared with that of the pure component fluids. Similarly, shale fluids can also show a multilayer adsorption behavior of heavy components at the quartz nanopore wall surface, but the amount of adsorption is lower. Comparing the peak density of the first adsorption layer in organic matter pores with that in quartz nanopore, the former shows 1.87 times more than the latter for ternary mixture (C1-C3-C8). Furthermore, it can be also observed that the adsorption capacity of fluid in the nanopores with different wettabilities differs. As the O/C ratio in organic matter wall is above 15%, the peak density of adsorption layer is significantly increased with the carbonyl proportion increases. But this changing tendency is decreased as the O/C ratio reaches above 50.46%. Furthermore, from the simulation results, it is observed that with the carbonyl proportion increases, the fluid self-diffusion coefficient is gradually reduced. It indicates that the effect of rock wettability on the fluid diffusion behavior. This study can provide an important data support to understand the adsorption and diffusion behavior of shale oil in nanopores, which is important for the effective and efficient development of shale oil reservoirs.

Abstract:Understanding the transport of liquid hydrocarbon through nanopores of inorganic minerals is crucial not only to develop liquid-rich shale reservoirs, but also to grasp oil migration from deeply buried extremely low permeability source rocks. We report a molecular study of liquid hydrocarbon (octane) flow through inorganic (quartz) nanopores ranging in size from 1.7 to 11.2 nm. Through equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD), we observe the layering structure of confined octane and conclude that in the center of slits having apertures greater than 3.6 nm, the octane properties, e.g., density, self-diffusion coefficient, and viscosity, tend to be bulk-liquid-like. Near the solid-liquid interface, octane molecules diffuse more slowly. Then we use nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) to study the pressure-driven flow of octane in quartz slits and present two methods to characterize the behavior: (1) slip length coupled with effective viscosity and (2) apparent viscosity. The Navier-Stokes equation can reasonably describe the flow in quartz nanopores larger than 1.7 nm; however, a slip boundary condition or viscosity correction is essential. Although the slip length (similar to 0.9 nm) is small, significant error can be caused in the estimation of overall flux if it is neglected. The variations in slip length and apparent viscosity with driving force, pore size, and temperature can be described by empirical exponential functions. These results can be readily incorporated into existing techniques to estimate apparent liquid permeability of shale-the most fundamental property required for shale exploitation. Mixture Composition Effect on Hydrocarbon-Water Transport in Shale Organic Nanochannels

Abstract:Understanding molecule transport through nanochannels is fundamental to geophysics, bioengineering, and physical chemistry. Here, molecular dynamics simulations combined with theoretical analysis are conducted to investigate hydrocarbon-water mixture flow in organic nanochannels. The flow is sensitive to the mixture compositions. The total flux decreases sharply with hydrocarbon content before the critical value, while it almost holds constant after the critical value, which is attributed to the spontaneous adsorption of hydrocarbon on the organic surface. An effective theory based on updating the Navier-Stokes equation with a slip boundary is proposed and validated to describe the mixture flow in nanochannels. The established quantitative relations between the total flux/slip length and the mixture composition are consistent with the molecular dynamics results.

Abstract:Shale reservoirs contain omnipresent nanopores. The fluid transport phenomena on the nanoscale are significantly different from that on the macroscale. The understandings of fluid transport behavior, especially multiphase flow, are still ambiguous on the nanoscale and the traditional hydrodynamic models are insufficient to describe the fluid flow in shale. In this work, we firstly use a molecular dynamics simulation to study the oil–water two-phase flow in shale inorganic quartz nanopores and investigated the unique interfacial phenomena and their influences on fluid transport in a confined nanospace. The results of the molecular simulation revealed that the water-oil-water layered structure was formed in quartz nanopores. There is no-slip boundary condition between water and quartz surface. The density dip and the extremely low apparent viscosity of the oil–water interface region were observed. The liquid–liquid slip effect happened at the oil–water interface. Based on the nano-effects obtained by the molecular simulation, two mathematical models were proposed to describe the nanoscale oil–water two-phase flow, considering both the solid–liquid and liquid–liquid interfacial phenomena, and the performances of two mathematical models were validated. This study shed light on the flow behaviors of oil and water on the nanoscale, and provides the theoretical basis for scale-upgrading, from the nanoscale to the macroscale.

Abstract:For the effective exploration and development of shale gas, it is important to understand the transport and adsorption mechanisms of methane, the main composition of shale gas. The wide variety of mineral components in shale matrices makes the pore surface complex, causing difficulty to understand the mass transport and adsorption behaviors within shale pores. Molecular dynamics (MD) have high fidelity to simulate the domains with complex geometries at nanoscale. However, most of the previous MD studies focused on the mechanisms of methane in slit nanopores, which could not reflect the real adsorption and transport behaviors of shale gas in nanopores with complex structures. This work studied the fluid properties in shale nanopores with high relative roughness and complex boundary geometries. The graphene sheets with different geometrical structures are used to characterize the complex boundary of shale pores. In addition, the effects of temperature, pressure, driving force, relative roughness, and absolute roughness on the adsorption and transport behaviors are investigated. In this study, shale gas diffusion is developed by the Einstein method to calculate the spatial diffusion coefficient D, planar diffusion coefficient Dxy, and vertical diffusion coefficient Dz of gas molecules to quantify and analyze the effects of temperature and pressure on shale gas diffusion. The results indicate that the main diffusion mechanism of methane is planar diffusion. Diffusion coefficients are sensitive to temperature and pressure changes for rarefied gases. Then, Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method is carried out to investigate the adsorption behavior. The simulation results show that the adsorption density increases with the increase of pressure and the decrease of temperature. The pressure-driven flow behavior of methane in nanopores is investigated by using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD). The results indicate that the flow velocity of methane increases with the driving force. Moreover, the rough elements near wall dampen the transport of methane molecules.

Abstract:Shale oil is an important unconventional resource gathered in shales with nanoscale pores. In this work molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the diffusion of shale oil in the clay-rich shale. The montmorillonite model was used to represent the clay-rich shale, and octane was used as a shale oil model. Results show that the diffusion coefficient of shale oils is extremely small in the basal spacing of 2.8 nm, and with the increase of basal spacing, the diffusion coefficient increases by several orders of magnitude. This observation indicates that once the shale oils flow from microscopic pores into the mesoscopic pores, it would be accompanied by the decrease of oil density and extreme increase of diffusion coefficient, which is very beneficial for exploitation of shale oils. However, it is still difficult to exploit the oil molecules adsorbed in the microscopic pore. Besides, by exploring the effect of chain length of the oil molecule on the diffusion, we found that the shorter chain oils are beneficial for exploitation. It is expected that these simulation results provide useful reference and important fundamentality for the investigation of shale oils.
Surface Effect on Oil Transportation in Nanochannel: a Molecular Dynamics Study

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the dynamics mechanism of oil transportation in nanochannel using molecular dynamics simulations. It is demonstrated that the interaction between oil molecules and nanochannel has a great effect on the transportation properties of oil in nanochannel. Because of different interactions between oil molecules and channel, the center of mass (COM) displacement of oil in a 6-nm channel is over 30 times larger than that in a 2-nm channel, and the diffusion coefficient of oil molecules at the center of a 6-nm channel is almost two times more than that near the channel surface. Besides, it is found that polarity of oil molecules has the effect on impeding oil transportation, because the electrostatic interaction between polar oil molecules and channel is far larger than that between nonpolar oil molecules and channel. In addition, channel component is found to play an important role in oil transportation in nanochannel, for example, the COM displacement of oil in gold channel is very few due to great interaction between oil and gold substrate. It is also found that nano-sized roughness of channel surface greatly influences the speed and flow pattern of oil. Our findings would contribute to revealing the mechanism of oil transportation in nanochannels and therefore are very important for design of oil extraction in nanochannels.
Molecular simulation of natural gas transport and storage in shale rocks with heterogeneous nano-pore structures

Abstract:Although natural gas is widely produced from shale, the mechanisms of natural gas transport in shale matrices remain poorly understood due to the complex chemical compounds of the matrices and the nanoscale pore size distribution. Using molecular simulations, we investigate natural gas transport and storage in nano-pore networks. Carbon-based 3-D pore networks are generated from 2-D scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of a shale rock using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation method. We employ a grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation to calculate adsorption isotherms of natural gas in carbon-based 3-D pore networks, which can be fit by a Langmuir isotherm model. To investigate gas transport in the same structures, we insert an external driving force into non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations and find that Knudsen diffusion is the dominant transport mechanism in the pore networks. Although porosity and pore connectivity affect the natural gas diffusion in the pore networks, we typically observe a linear relationship between average molar flow rate through a cross-sectional area and the external driving force.

Distribution and mobility of crude oil-brine in clay mesopores: Insights from molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract:The value of crude oil accommodated in shale has been recognized and has attracted increasing attention from the academic and industrial society. The occurrence and mobility of crude oil in clay pores, therefore, become essential issues for evaluation and recovery of shale oil. The distribution, structure, and transport of the oil-brine mixture confined in a slit-shaped montmorillonite mesopore with different water amounts have been investigated using equilibrium molecular dynamics and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations. A mimic model of crude oil, a mixture of 19 organic molecules, was employed, and thus the behavior of different organic molecules could be characterized in detail. A temperature of 410 K and a pressure of 300 atm corresponding to a buried depth of 3 km were employed. The simulations indicate that the water the distribution of crude oil. Water and metal ions prefer to cover on hydrophilic montmorillonite surfaces, while nonpolar hydrocarbons tend to be far away from clay surfaces. As the water amount is too low to completely cover the clay surfaces, some polar organic molecules will come into contact with the uncovered clay surface. Abundant organic acid molecules adsorb onto montmorillonite surfaces mainly through participating in the inner-sphere complexes of Na+ ions closely located at montmorillonite surfaces (i.e., Na+ cation bridge) and forming hydrogen bonds with water molecules in the vicinity. Carbazole molecules tend to aggregate together due to pi-pi stacking, while thioether molecules mix within alkane molecules and exhibit no characteristic distributions. The mobility of all oil components decreases with the decrease of the water amount, and the mobility of polar components (i.e., organic acid and carbazole) is relatively lower than that of nonpolar hydrocarbons. NEMD simulations clearly indicate that the transport velocity of crude oil markedly increases with the water amount under a specific pressure gradient. The brine covering on clay surfaces significantly weakens oil-clay interfacial interactions. Polar components, especially organic acid, exhibit relatively low transport velocity compared with nonpolar hydrocarbons. These findings highlight the understanding of physical-chemical behaviors of shale oil and provide atomistic information for technology development for enhancing oil recovery.

It is demonstrated that shale oil density does not remain the same throughout the pore and its oscillation attenuates from the slit surface to the central plane. In this paper, the effects of oil composition and temperature on the densities of the adsorption layers and adsorption character have been extensively examined. We find that (a) there are four adsorption layers of oil mixture on silica and graphite surface, (b) the adsorption character of single component in oil mixture depends largely on its property: the adsorption mass of high carbon number alkane increases with the numbers of adsorption layers, of which trend is contrary to that of light carbon numbers alkane; aromatic hydrocarbon has mainly one adsorption layer; the adsorption character of polar compounds depends on their electric charge, (c) silica surface is more likely to adsorb the light carbon number alkane than graphite because of its rough surface; and compounds with negative charge trend to be adsorption more on the silica surface than graphite due to the hydroxyls of silica. Graphite adsorbs more C10H8 than silica, because graphite and C10H8 have the same conjugated pi bond and the shape of C10H8 is not suitable to rough surface of silica, (d) the density of adsorption layers decreases with the increase of temperature, and the effect of temperature on the adsorption of macromolecular compounds is greater. On the basis of our molecular simulation, we show the adsorption rate of shale oil on the surfaces of mineral/organic matter and the potential to assess the moveable capacity of shale oil.
A Multiscale Approach For Simulation Of Shale Gas Transport In Organic Nanopores

Abstract:Gas flow behaviors in shale are significantly complicated because of the inherent complexity and heterogeneity of shale formations. Revealing the gas transport characteristic is critical for achieving high efficiency of shale gas exploitation. In this work, a multiscale approach combined molecular simulation and lattice Boltzmann method has been proposed for investigating gas transport in shale organic nanopores. Firstly, the characteristic of adsorbed gas in shale nanopore was obtained by molecular simulation. Then, the adsorption properties were integrated to develop a lattice Boltzmann model, which can capture slippage and surface diffusion effects in shale nanopores. By employing this proposed multiscale model, the effects of pressure, temperature and pore size on shale gas adsorption and transport characteristics in organic nanopore were studied. Numerical results show pore size and pressure have great influences on gas adsorption behaviors. The gas apparent permeability tends to increase with the increment of temperature and decrease of pressure. Moreover, the influences of pore size and pressure on surface diffusion permeability were examined. Numerical results indicate the contribution of surface diffusion to overall apparent permeability tends to be enhanced in small pore and low pressure. Oil diffusion in shale nanopores: Insight of molecular dynamics simulation

Abstract:Shale contains various minerals. The occurrence behavior and flow mechanism of gas and oil in organic matters, inorganic material and clay minerals have significant differences. In this study, the diffusivity of oil in shale nanopores composed by various mineral types were investigated. The effects of pore size, temperature, pressure, alkane types, mineral types and moisture content on shale oil diffusion were discussed. The results revealed that the diffusion coefficients of octane in shale nanopores were on the order of 10−9 m/s2. The adsorption amount of oil in organic matters was almost two folds larger than that in inorganic composition and clay minerals. However, the diffusivity of oil decreases in the order of organic matter, inorganic material and clay mineral due to the ultrasmooth structure of organic surface. The oil diffusivity increased with the increase of pore size and temperature. Long chain alkane presented a weaker diffusivity due to the larger molecular weight and intermolecular forces. The temperature effect on long chain alkane diffusion was less evident comparing with shorter chain alkane. The existence of water inhibited the adsorption and diffusion of oil in the pores composed by all kinds of materials. The water inhibiting effect of oil diffusivity was much more significant in organic pores since the water accumulated as cluster in organic slit, providing a piston-like process, while a water film was presented on the surface of inorganic materials. The findings of this study revealed the oil diffusion behavior in shale nanopores and provided the theoretical support for shale oil exploration and development.
Multiscale Transport Mechanism of Shale Gas in Micro/nano-Pores

Abstract:A better understanding on the multiscale transport of shale gas will further the advancement of shale gas extraction. Traditional lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) simulations usually underestimate the shale gas transport capacity due to the missed consideration of gas adsorption in nanometer-sized slit pores. Here, we proposed a multiscale LB model considering the adsorption effect to simulate the shale gas transport in micro/nano-pores. The adsorption parameters between organic wall and gas molecules were determined by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Multiscale transport mechanism of shale gas in micro/nano slit pores ranging from nanometer to millimeter was studied by, including three different flow characteristics, namely, viscous flow, slippage, and surface diffusion. In microscale pores (pore width H > 1 mu m), viscous flow is the dominated transport mechanism, where the velocity profile displays a typical parabolic shape without slip velocity. In larger nanoscale pores (10 nm <H < 1 mu m), slip velocity is no longer zero and increases as pore width decreases. The gas transport is dominated by viscous flow and slippage. In smaller nanometer-scale pores (H < 10 nm), relatively more gas molecules are adsorbed on organic pore wall, resulting in non-negligible surface diffusion which can increase the mass flux by as much as one order of magnitude. Moreover, apparent permeability obtained from our LBM simulations was compared with previous theoretical models, demonstrating the accuracy of the second-order relationship between the correlation factor and the Knudsen number. Nanoconfined Transport Characteristic Of Methane In Organic Shale Nanopores: The Applicability Of The Continuous Model

Abstract:In recent years, since the fast mass transport emerges from some low-dimensional nanostructures (e.g., graphene and CNTs), the applicability of the continuous model (e.g., hydrodynamics) for describing the nanoscale flow has been intensely challenged, even for shale gas. As the typical tight rock with numerous nanopores, most scholars considered that gas transport capacity (permeability) within a shale organic matrix (i.e., kerogen) would be significantly enhanced as well, due to the nanoscale slip effect. Herein, we perform comprehensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to reveal the realistic gas transport behavior through shale kerogen nanopores. The results show that, interestingly, all the velocity profiles for different kerogen (type I, II, and III) nanopores display no-slip parabolic shape, which are quantitatively satisfied with the continuous model under various conditions, including pressure drop (0.25-1 MPa), pore size (2-8 nm), and ambient pressure (5-50 MPa) and temperature (300-390 K). In particular, using potential energy surface (PES) and particle trajectory capture (PTC) technologies, we find that, confined by the rough kerogen walls and ultra-high reservoir pressure, the methane molecules collide with the walls frequently but just go round and round without moving along the walls (confined reflection), and thus, the tangential momentum (slip velocity) is negligible at the walls. Importantly, this work demonstrates that traditional consideration of the slip effect is redundant for methane transport in organic shale (kerogen) nanopores and will overestimate the gas permeability immensely (as much as 100 times). These new insights would be helpful for the precise understanding and accurate modeling of methane transport within nanoporous shale rocks.
