Abstract:The superhigh-speed unidirectional rotation of a carbon nanotube (CNT) induced by a linear shear flow is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. We have identified three rotational types: “continuous rotation”, “interrupted rotation” and “simple oscillation”, corresponding to a decreased number of unidirectional rotation circles over the same time duration. It was found that the unidirectional motion and oscillation respectively originate from the applied shear and rotary Brownian motion by a decoupled analysis of the rotational features. The angular velocity of the unidirectional motion is over one order of magnitude larger than the Jeffery's theory. To construct a CNT-based rotary motor with good performance, the high-speed unidirectional angular velocity can be achieved by carefully selecting the shear rate (e.g. 2 10 rad s 1 at 35 GHz) and the continuous rotating state can be approached by using a low aspect ratio carbon nanotube.

Abstract:Carbon nanofibers as constructed from various one-dimensional carbon nanostructure, such as sp(3) diamond nanowire, sp(2) carbon nanotubes, and carbyne, have received enormous interest from both scientific and engineering communities. The newly synthesized nanostructure carbon nanothreads (C_NTH) show superior properties and make them ideal building blocks for high-performance carbon nanofibers. This work systematically investigates the torsional properties of C_NTH bundles through high-throughput large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. Our results show that the torsional behavior of C_NTH bundles depends strongly on the loading direction. By adjusting the enantiomer ratios, we can effectively tune the mechanical properties of the bundle structure, including the strain energy density, elastic limit, and torsional rigidity. Benefiting from their rich structural varieties, this work suggests that carbon nanothreads are promising candidates for the next-generation high-performance carbon nanofiber.
Anomalous Orientations Of A Rigid Carbon Nanotube In A Sheared Fluid

Abstract:The nanoparticle orientation in fluid systems can be correlated with the rotational diffusion and is widely used to tune the physical properties of functional materials. In the current work, the controllability of the orientation of a single rigid carbon nanotube in a fluid is investigated by imposing a linear shear flow. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal three forms of anomalous behavior: (i) "Aligned orientation" when the nanotube oscillates around a particular direction which is close to the flow direction at a small angle of about 106 in the velocity-gradient plane; (ii) "Interrupted orientation" when the oscillation is interrupted by a 3606 rotation now and then; (iii) "Random orientation" when 3606 rotations dominate with the rotational direction coinciding with the local fluid flow direction. The orientation order is a function of the Peclet number (Pe). The results show that the correlation between Pe and the orientation order from the two-dimensional model does not apply to the three-dimensional cases, perhaps due to some anomalous behavior and cross-section effects. This work provides clear pictures of the nanoparticle movement that can be used to guide particle manipulation techniques.

Abstract:Construction of nano-devices that can generate controllable unidirectional rotation is an important part of nanotechnology. Here, we design a nano-turbine composed of carbon nanotube and graphene nanoblades, which can be driven by fluid flow. Rotation motion of nano-turbine is quantitatively studied by molecular dynamics simulations on this model system. A robust linear relationship is achieved with this nano-turbine between its rotation rate and the fluid flow velocity spanning two orders of magnitude, and this linear relationship remains intact at various temperatures. More interestingly, a striking difference from its macroscopic counterpart is identified: the rotation rate is much smaller (by a factor of ~15) than that of the macroscopic turbine with the same driving flow. This discrepancy is shown to be related to the disruption of water flow at nanoscale, together with the water slippage at graphene surface and the so-called "dragging effect". Moreover, counterintuitively, the ratio of "effective" driving flow velocity increases as the flow velocity increases, suggesting that the linear dependence on the flow velocity can be more complicated in nature. These findings may serve as a foundation for the further development of rotary nano-devices and should also be helpful for a better understanding of the biological molecular motors.

Abstract:The high aspect ratio and bending resilience of a carbon nanotube (CNT) enables it to have remarkable responses to fluid flow. The structural deformation and vibration of a CNT under fluid flow are discussed in this paper, closely tied to their applications in mechanosensing and energy harvesting. We perform molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and a theoretical analysis based on the elastic beam theory, and find that the performance of these applications is critically defined by thermal noise at low flow speeds and flow-induced elastic instabilities at high speeds. We provide a map of operating mechanisms as defined by the properties of both nanostructures and fluid. The results and understanding obtained here could shed some light on the design of nanomechanical devices operating in fluidic environments.

Abstract:Measuring the rotation of a rotor in a thermally driven motor made from double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) involves challenges based in the small size of the nanotube (radius usually being less than or equal to 5 nm) and the high frequency of rotation (over 100 GHz). These features motivated us to study a rotor with variable configurations, in which the rotor is fabricated initially by bonding a graphene (GN) nanoribbon on a carbon nanotube (CNT). The width of the GN nanoribbon is far greater than the radius of the CNT. Using molecular dynamics simulation, we find that the "CNT + GN" rotor generally experiences three representative stages. In the first stage, the GN nanoribbon winds onto the CNT and the rotor becomes a carbon nanoscroll (CNS) within 100 ps (picoseconds). The second stage is acceleration of the rotor's rotation. The duration of that stage is controlled by the number of inward radial deviation (IRD) carbon atoms on the stator and the inertial moment of the rotor. When the rotational speed of the CNT reaches a critical value, the CNS unwinds within 80 ps into a nanoribbon, which can be considered as the third stage. When hydrogen atoms are initially added to the GN, more configuration variations of the rotor can be identified. The rotation of the "CNT + GN" rotor can be feasibly measured by observing the configuration variations of the rotor. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Water transportation inside carbon nanotubes is of great importance for designing novel nanodevices. In this article, by using molecular dynamics simulations, we systematically investigate the pumping of water by rotating carbon nanotube (CNT). It is found that the chirality and rotation of the CNT are two preconditions for stable water flux inside it. Besides, we find that the water flux shows an approximately logarithmic dependence on the angular velocity of the rotation, a linear dependence on the radius of the CNT, and interestingly, independence of its length within a certain range of CNT size and angular velocity. Further, we also use a dragging theory which successfully describes the water flux behaviors inside the CNT and can fit well with the results obtained from simulations. The present study provides insight into the designing of nanodevices based on the CNT for real applications.

Abstract:In a nano rotational transmission system (RTS) which consists of a single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) as the motor and a coaxially arranged double walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) as a bearing, the interaction between the motor and the rotor in bearing, which has great effects on the response of the RTS, is determined by their adjacent edges. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, the interaction is analyzed when the adjacent edges have different carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bonding layouts. In the computational models, the rotor in bearing and the motor with a specific input rotational speed are made from the same armchair SWCNT. Simulation results demonstrate that a perfect rotational transmission could happen when the motor and rotor have the same C-H bonding layout on their adjacent ends. If only half or less of the carbon atoms on the adjacent ends are bonded with hydrogen atoms, the strong attraction between the lower speed (100 GHz) motor and rotor leads to a synchronous rotational transmission. If only the motor or the rotor has C-H bonds on their adjacent ends, no rotational transmission happens due to weak interaction between the bonded hydrogen atoms on one end with the sp(1) bonded carbon atoms on the other end. Abstract:We report a versatile method for executing controllable high-speed rotation of nanowires by AC voltages applied to multiple electrodes. The rotation of the nanowires can be instantly switched on or off with precisely controlled rotation speed (to at least 1800 rpm), definite chirality, and total angle of rotation. We have determined the torque due to the fluidic drag force on nanowire of different lengths. We also demonstrate a micromotor using a rotating nanowires driving a dust particle into circular motion. This method has been used to rotate magnetic and nonmagnetic nanowires as well as carbon nanotubes.

Driving carbon nanotube to rotate by diamond wedges at room temperature

Abstract:A rotary nanomotor made of carbon nanostructures is introduced here. Through a rotationally symmetrical layout of diamond wedges (or needles) outside of a carbon nanotube and with the [100] direction of diamond along the tube's axial direction, the wedge needle tips can drive the nanotube to rotate at gigahertz frequency at room temperature. During thermal vibration, some of the atoms in the nanotube collide with the needle tips. The tips provide the atoms with continuous repulsion during collision. The tangential component of the repulsion force produces a moment onto the nanotube about the tube axis. Consequently, the nanotube is driven to rotate by the moment. The rotor reaches stable rotation when the concentric outer tubes provide equivalent resistance against the repulsion from needle tips. Molecular dynamics simulation results indicate that the stability of the needle tips influences the rotational frequency of the rotor. Potential fabrication of such a nanomotor is illustrated with consideration of miniaturization. The rotary motor can act as an engine in a nanomachine.

Abstract:The torsional behavior of the chiral single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) is investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) method. The results show that the torsional behavior of chiral DWCNTs presents a weaker direction dependent than that of SWCNTs. The critical buckling shear strain of DWCNT in the untwisting direction of the outer tube is always greater than that in the opposite direction. The torsional rigidities of the DWCNT and its outer tubes are approximately identical. However, torsional elastic range of the DWCNT is much higher than that of the outer tube. Moreover, the torsional direction dependency of incommensurate chiral (n1 + m1, −m1)@ (n2,m2) tube is weaker than that of commensurate (n1,m1)@ (n2,m2) tube, which implies that if the chiral angles of the inner and the outer tube of a DWCNT are arranged in opposite directions, the torsional direction dependency of a DWCNT will be further reduced. Meanwhile, rotational inertia of the DWCNT remains nearly unchanged under torsion in a quite large torsional range. These conclusions will be helpful in designing torsional components of NEMS (nano-electromechanical system) using carbon tubes.

Abstract:As the inner tube is excited from a rotation frequency at a separation distance, the inner tube will generate a reciprocating screwing motion. In this work, this coupling effect is investigated theoretically. The van der Waals force between two carbon nanotubes is expressed in a simple form of Fourier series so that the coupled nonlinear differential equations can be quickly solved. The proposed approach is thousands of times faster than the traditional method, which makes it possible to fit the coupling coefficients. As a result, expressions for the coefficients of the coupled equations are given. It is observed that a larger initial rotation frequency excitation will result in a higher dissipation rate of the axial oscillation, and vice versa.

Abstract:The rotational diffusion coefficient of a single carbon nanotube in fluid is calculated by equilibrium and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (MD). The validity and accuracy of the MD simulations are checked on plenty of data points by varying the length and diameter of the nanotube. The three-dimensional (3D) coefficients are larger than the two-dimensional (2D) ones, both having non- negligible deviations from the theoretical predictions [J. Chem. Phys. 1984, 81, 2047-2052]. By changing the parameter εC-Ar of Lennard-Jones potential, the interaction strength between carbon and argon atoms is also taken into account. A monotonic decrease of the coefficients for both 2D and 3D cases with the increase of εC-Ar can be observed. Our present work suggests that we must be cautious when using the literature theory in practical situations.

Abstract:In a nano bearing, a curved inner carbon nano tube (CNT) constrained by two short outer CNTs will have an oscillation along the curved axis of the tube when a specified rotational velocity is input on one end of the inner tube. It is found that the free end has periodic axial translational oscillation and the amplitude of oscillation is very high when the frequency of the input rotational velocity is close to an eigen/resonance frequency of the system, i.e., energy absorption of the inner tube from the interaction between the inner and outer tubes. Higher curvature of the inner tube leads to higher value of fundamental frequency of the system. The free end of the inner tube also has obvious torque oscillation. Both of the axial translational oscillation and torque oscillation of the free end can be used as output signals of the system as working in a nano signal generator. The mid part of the inner tube, i.e., the part between two outer tubes, has obvious in-plane vibration, which indicates that the present nano bearing is a two-dimensional device.

Abstract:Anomalous heat transport in one-dimensional nanostructures, such as nanotubes and nanowires, is a widely debated problem in condensed matter and statistical physics, with contradicting pieces of evidence from experiments and simulations. Using a comprehensive modeling approach, comprised of lattice dynamics and molecular dynamics simulations, we proved that the infinite length limit of the thermal conductivity of a (10,0) single-wall carbon nanotube is finite but this limit is reached only for macroscopic lengths due to a thermal phonon mean free path of several millimeters. Our calculations showed that the extremely high thermal conductivity of this system at room temperature is dictated by quantum effects. Modal analysis showed that the divergent nature of thermal conductivity, observed in one-dimensional model systems, is suppressed in carbon nanotubes by anharmonic scattering channels provided by the flexural and optical modes with polarization in the plane orthogonal to the transport direction.

Abstract:Motion of single-walled carbon nanotubes on graphite substrate is investigated by using molecular dynamics simulation in this paper. Following a relaxation to the equilibrium state, a uniform force is applied to carbon nanotubes for a period of time to set them into motion. After the applied force being removed, carbon nanotubes move relative to the substrate in decelerating speed until they come to a full rest in the end. Different tube radius and chiral angles are selected during simulation. The results show that motion of carbon nanotubes is mainly affected by the chiral angle but independent of tube radius. When the chiral angle is 30°, periodic transition between sliding and rolling is observed due to the periodic change of atomic configuration during the motion. When chiral angle is between 28.3° and 30°, sliding and rotating take place at the same time. When chiral angle is less than 26.3°, only sliding is observed. Different chiral angles result in different atomic configurations in the contact region between carbon nanotubes and graphite substrate, which gives rise to different styles of motion.
Molecular Dynamics Calculation of Rotational Diffusion Coefficient of a Carbon Nanotube in Fluid

Abstract:Rotational diffusion processes are correlated with nanoparticle visualization and manipulation techniques, widely used in nanocomposites, nanofluids, bioscience, and so on. However, a systematical methodology of deriving this diffusivity is still lacking. In the current work, three molecular dynamics (MD) schemes, including equilibrium (Green-Kubo formula and Einstein relation) and nonequilibrium (Einstein-Smoluchowski relation) methods, are developed to calculate the rotational diffusion coefficient, taking a single rigid carbon nanotube in fluid argon as a case. We can conclude that the three methods produce same results on the basis of plenty of data with variation of the calculation parameters (tube length, diameter, fluid temperature, density, and viscosity), indicative of the validity and accuracy of the MD simulations. However, these results have a non-negligible deviation from the theoretical predictions of Tirado et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 81, 2047 (1984)], which may come from several unrevealed factors of the theory. The three MD methods proposed in this paper can also be applied to other situations of calculating rotational diffusion coefficient.
Defect-driven rotating system based on a double-walled carbon nanotube and graphene

Abstract:A nanoscale rotating system that consists of a double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) and graphene and is driven by a defect in the graphene is proposed, and its rotating dynamics and driving mechanism are investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. A potential energy difference caused by the presence of the vacancy defect on the graphene substrate causes the outer tube in the DWCNT to stably rotate in a specific direction. The rotational speed of the outer tubem initially increases before reaching a stable speed. This phenomenon indicates that the driving torque is a difference between the sides of the outer tube in the van der Waals potential; this difference in potential is caused by the presence of the defect in the graphene. In addition, the effects of the system temperature, the radius and chiral vectors of the DWCNT, and the location of the defect in the graphene are investigated. The theoretical work reported here should provide a reference for the design of motion systems based on carbon nanotubes and graphene and their applications.
Focusing inversion techniques applied to electrical resistance tomography in an experimental tank

Abstract:We present an algorithm for focusing inversion of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) data. ERT is a typical example of ill-posed problem. Regularization is the most common way to face this kind of problems; it basically consists in using a priori information about targets to reduce the ambiguity and the instability of the solution. By using the minimum gradient support (MGS) stabilizing functional, we introduce the following geometrical prior information in the reconstruction process: anomalies have sharp boundaries. The presented work is embedded in a project (L.A.R.A.) which aims at the estimation of hydrogeological properties from geophysical investigations. L.A.R.A. facilities include a simulation tank (4 m x 8 m x 1.35 m); 160 electrodes are located all around the tank and used for 3-D ERT. Because of the large number of electrodes and their dimensions, it is important to model their effect in order to correctly evaluate the electrical system response. The forward modelling in the presented algorithm is based on the so-called complete electrode model that takes into account the presence of the electrodes and their contact impedances. In this paper, we compare the results obtained with different regularizing functionals applied on a synthetic model.

Abstract:Thermally driven devices based on double-walled carbon nanotubes are proposed in this paper. Molecular dynamics simulations show that large-amplitude axial oscillation can be effectively excited for the local van der Waals potential barrier, ${V}_{\mathrm{loc}}$, accessible by the thermal fluctuation. Besides the axial oscillation, the angular and transverse motion are observed and discussed. It is further found that severe structure distortion can terribly disturb the motion at high temperature. The great intertube mobility observed here implies the possibility of building a nanoscale Brownian machine or molecular transport channel, with broad applications.
