Abstract:We have analyzed spectra of localized microwave transmitted through quasi-1D random samples to obtain the central frequency, linewidth and field speckle pattern of the modes for an ensemble of samples at three lengths. We find strong correlation between modal field speckle patterns. This leads to destructive interference between modes which explain strong suppression of steady state transmission and of pulsed transmission at early times. We have also studied the statistics of mode spacings and widths in localized samples. The distribution of mode spacings between adjacent modes is close to the Wigner surmise predicted for diffusive waves, which exhibit strong level repulsion. However, a deviation from Wigner distribution can be seen in the distribution of spacings beyond the nearest ones. A weakening in the rigidity of the modal spectrum is also observed as the sample length increases because of reduced level repulsion for more strongly localized waves. In contrast to residual diffusive behavior for level spacing statistics, the distribution of level widths are log-normal as predicted for localized waves. We also measured the steady state and dynamic fluctuations and correlation of localized wave transmitted through random waveguides. We find the degree of intensity correlation first increases, and then decays with time delay, before increasing dramatically. The variation in the spatial correlation of intensity with time delay is due to the changing effective number of modes that contribute to transmission. A minimum in correlation is reached when the number of modes contributing appreciably to transmission peaks. At long times, the degree of intensity correlation and the variance of total transmission increase dramatically. This reflects the reduced role of short-lived states and the growing weight of long-lived modes.

Abstract:In this work, quantization of electromagnetic fields in a general anisotropic inhomogeneous media is considered. First, the classical Hamiltonian is derived. Once the Hamiltonian is derived, with it the classical equations of motion follow. Next, the fields are elevated to become quantum operators, for which conjugate pairs are endowed with commutators. Since as previously shown, such commutators induce functional derivatives, the quantum equations of motion can be easily derived. Next, the mode decomposition of the fields is demonstrated. Upon substitution into the classical Hamiltonian, each mode then behaves like a simple harmonic oscillator. These oscillators can then be elevated to become quantum harmonic oscillators. Both the traveling wave modes and the standing wave modes are discussed. Furthermore, the longitudinal modes are described. Finally, the case of impressed sources are considered, with the corresponding Hamiltonian and field quantization. The Green's functions for the linear system are presented. Finally, the quantum Maxwell's equations are derived. A short discussion on field-atom interaction is given.

Abstract:We study the excitation conditions of the supported field modes, as well as the spontaneous decay property of a two-level quantum emitter coupled to photonic structures containing topological insulators (TIs) and left-handed materials. Within the proper field quantization scheme, the spontaneous decay rates of dipoles with different polarizations are expressed in forms of the Green's functions. We find that in the proposed structure, the variation in the topological magnetoelectric polarizability (TMP) has a deterministic effect on the excitation of different field modes. As the result, the spontaneous decay property of the quantum emitter can be engineered. For a dipole placed in different spatial regions, the spontaneous decay feature indicates a dominant contribution from the waveguide modes, the surface plasmon modes or the free vacuum modes. Moreover, a special kind of the surface plasmon modes displaying asymmetric density of states at the interfaces, becomes legal in the presence of nontrivial TIs. These phenomena manifest the feasibility in controlling dipole emissions via manipulations of the topological magnetoelectric (TME) effect. Our results have potential applications in quantum technologies relied on the accurate control over light-matter interactions.

Abstract:Field transmission coefficients for microwave radiation between arrays of points on the incident and output surfaces of random samples are analyzed to yield the underlying quasi-normal modes and transmission eigenchannels of each realization of the sample. The linewidths, central frequencies, and transmitted speckle patterns associated with each of the modes of the medium are found. Modal speckle patterns are found to be strongly correlated leading to destructive interference between modes. This explains distinctive features of transmission spectra and pulsed transmission. An alternate description of wave transport is obtained from the eigenchannels and eigenvalues of the transmission matrix. The maximum transmission eigenvalue, τ1 is near unity for diffusive waves even in turbid samples. For localized waves, τ1 is nearly equal to the dimensionless conductance, which is the sum of all transmission eigenvalues, g = Στn. The spacings between the ensemble averages of successive values of ln τn are constant and equal to the inverse of the bare conductance in accord with predictions by Dorokhov. The effective number of transmission eigenvalues Neff determines the contrast between the peak and background of radiation focused for maximum peak intensity. The connection between the mode and channel approaches is discussed.

Abstract:We study the interaction between quasi-modes in dielectric cavities of stadium shape. We show that dependence of two coupled modes on the cavity deformation can be described by the coupled-level model, and extract complex coupling constant. Depending on the value of coupling constant we observe several kinds of quasi-mode evolution.

Abstract:The ease with which waves can travel through a disordered system is theoretically encapsulated in the separation and width of the energy levels — or modes — describing that system. But extracting this information is experimentally challenging because of the spectral overlap of these modes. Jing Wang and Azriel Genack now show how these modal properties can be reconstructed from measurements of the 'speckle' pattern of radiation transmitted through a disordered medium. The ease with which waves can travel through a disordered system is theoretically encapsulated in the separation and width of the energy levels, or modes, describing that system. However, extracting this information is experimentally challenging due to the spectral overlap of these modes. Here it is shown how these modal properties can be reconstructed from measurements of the 'speckle' pattern of radiation transmitted through a disordered medium. Excitations in complex media are superpositions of eigenstates that are referred to as ‘levels’ for quantum systems and ‘modes’ for classical waves. Although the Hamiltonian of a complex system may not be known or solvable, Wigner conjectured1 that the statistics of energy level spacings would be the same as for the eigenvalues of large random matrices. This has explained key characteristics of neutron scattering spectra2. Subsequently, Thouless and co-workers argued3,4 that the metal–insulator transition in disordered systems4,5,6 could be described by a single parameter, the ratio of the average width and spacing of electronic energy levels: when this dimensionless ratio falls below unity, conductivity is suppressed by Anderson localization5 of the electronic wavefunction. However, because of spectral congestion due to the overlap of modes7,8,9, even for localized waves, a comprehensive modal description of wave propagation has not been realized. Here we show that the field speckle pattern10 of transmitted radiation—in this case, a microwave field transmitted through randomly packed alumina spheres—can be decomposed into a sum of the patterns of the individual modes of the medium and the central frequency and linewidth of each mode can be found. We find strong correlation between modal field speckle patterns, which leads to destructive interference between modes. This allows us to explain complexities of steady state and pulsed transmission of localized waves and to harmonize wave and particle descriptions of diffusion.

Abstract:Wave dynamics in topological materials has been widely studied recently. A striking feature is the existence of robust and chiral wave propagations that have potential applications in many fields. A common way to realize such wave patterns is to utilize Dirac points, which carry topological indices and is supported by the symmetries of the media. In this work, we investigate these phenomena in photonic media. Starting with Maxwell's equations with a honeycomb material weight as well as the nonlinear Kerr effect, we first prove the existence of Dirac points in the dispersion surfaces of transverse electric and magnetic Maxwell operators under very general assumptions of the material weight. Our assumptions on the material weight are almost the minimal requirements to ensure the existence of Dirac points in a general hexagonal photonic crystal. We then derive the associated wave packet dynamics in the scenario where the honeycomb structure is weakly modulated. It turns out the reduced envelope equation is generally a two-dimensional nonlinear Dirac equation with a spatially varying mass. By studying the reduced envelope equation with a domain-wall-like mass term, we realize the subtle wave motions, which are chiral and immune to local defects. The underlying mechanism is the existence of topologically protected linear line modes, also referred to as edge states. However, we show that these robust linear modes do not survive with nonlinearity. We demonstrate the existence of nonlinear line modes, which can propagate in the nonlinear media based on high-accuracy numerical computations. Moreover, we also report a new type of nonlinear modes, which are localized in both directions.

A number of solitonlike modes induced by the nonlinear effect have been found, and their exact analytical experssion has been derived. The intensity-dependent transmission has been investigated, and complete resonant transmission has been found.

Abstract:The topological charge of an electromagnetic vortex beam depends on its wavefront helicity. For mixed vortex beams composed of several different coaxial vortices, it is significant to investigate the local topological charges. Fourier transform based methods are restrained by the uncertainty principle and cannot achieve high angular resolution and mode resolution simultaneously. In this paper, an analysis method for local topological charges of vortex beams is presented based on the empirical mode decomposition (EMD). From EMD, the intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) can be obtained to construct the bases of the electromagnetic wave, and each local topological charge can be respectively defined. With this method the local value achieves high resolution of both azimuth angle and topological charge, meanwhile the amplitudes of each orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes are presented as well. The simulation and experimental results confirm the validity of the EMD based method.
Wave Excitation and Dynamics in Non-Hermitian Disordered Systems

Abstract:Dynamic and steady state aspects of wave propagation are deeply connected in lossless open systems in which the scattering matrix is unitary. There is then an equivalence among the energy excited within the medium, the Wigner time delay, and the density of states. But these equivalences fall away in the presence of material loss or gain. In this paper, we use microwave measurements, numerical simulations, and theoretical analysis to discover the changing relationships among the internal field, transmission, transmission time, dwell time, total excited energy, and the density of states in with loss and gain, and their dependence upon dimensionality and spectral overlap. The total energy excited is equal to the dwell time. In 1D, the average transmission time is independent of loss, gain, and scattering strength. In higher dimensions, however, the average transmission time falls with loss, scattering strength and channel number, and increases with gain. It is the sum over Lorentzian functions associated with the zeros as well as the poles of the transmission matrix. This endows transmission zeros with robust topological characteristics: in unitary media, zeros occur either singly on the real axis or as conjugate pairs in the complex frequency plane. In weakly absorbing media, the spectrum of the transmission time of the lowest transmission eigenchannel is the sum of Lorentzians due to transmission zeros plus a background due to far-off-resonance poles. The average density of transmission zeros in the complex plane is found from the fall of the average transmission time with absorption as zeros are swept into the lower half of the complex frequency plane. We show that the disposition of poles and zeros in the complex frequency plane provides a framework for understanding and controlling wave propagation in non-Hermitian systems.

The role of electromagnetic trapped modes in extraordinary transmission in nanostructured materials

Abstract:We assert that the physics underlying the extraordinary light transmission (reflection) in nanostructured materials can be understood from rather general principles based on the formal scattering theory developed in quantum mechanics. The Maxwell equations in passive (dispersive and absorptive) linear media are written in the form of the Schrödinger equation to which the quantum mechanical resonant scattering theory (the Lippmann-Schwinger formalism) is applied. It is demonstrated that the existence of long-lived quasistationary eigenstates of the effective Hamiltonian for the Maxwell theory naturally explains the extraordinary transmission properties observed in various nanostructured materials. Such states correspond to quasistationary electromagnetic modes trapped in the scattering structure. Our general approach is also illustrated with an example of the zero-order transmission of the TE-polarized light through a metal-dielectric grating structure. Here a direct on-the-grid solution of the time-dependent Maxwell equations demonstrates the significance of resonances (or trapped modes) for extraordinary light transmissio

Abstract:We study Maxwell’s equations in random media with small fluctuations of the electric permittivity. We consider a setup where the waves propagate toward a preferred direction, called range. We decompose the electromagnetic wave field in transverse electric and transverse magnetic plane waves, called modes, with random amplitudes that model cumulative scattering effects in the medium. Their evolution in range is described by a coupled system of stochastic differential equations driven by the random fluctuations of the electric permittivity. We analyze the solution of this system with the Markov limit theorem and obtain a detailed asymptotic characterization of the electromagnetic wave field in the long range limit. In particular, we quantify the loss of coherence of the waves due to scattering by calculating the range scales (scattering mean free paths) on which the mean amplitudes of the modes decay. We also quantify the energy exchange between the modes, and consequently the loss of polarization induced by scattering, by analyzing the Wigner transform (energy density) of the electromagnetic wave field. This analysis involves the derivation of transport equations with polarization. We study in detail these equations and connect the results with the existing literature in radiative transport and paraxial wave propagation.
