Abstract:Objective To investigate the changes of the concentrations of lipoprotein (a) in normal pregnant women and its involved clinical significance. Methods Serum concentrations of lipoprotein (a) were measured in 288 healthy pregnant women by ELISA.The levels of other serum lipid and lipoproteins were simultaneously determined on a model 7600 automatic analyzer (Hitachi). The controls were 92 nulliparous healthy young women. Results Serum lipoprotein (a) concentration in normal pregnant women increased significantly as compared with nulliparous controls (96.0±104.7 mg/L vs 73.79±83.7 mg/L,P0.01).Other serum lipids and lipoproteins levels in normal pregnant women also increased significantly as compared with the controls. The levels of lipoprotein (a) in the both groups with 21 to 28 weeks and 29 to 40 weeks of gestation were markedly elevated as compared with those in group with 12 to 20 weeks of gestation(P0.05).In addition, all serum lipid and lipoproteins measured increased with the progression of gestation. Conclusion The elevation of lipoprotein (a) level may be a result of increased estrogen level and be necessary for pregnant physiological requirement during pregnancy.
