MnO2@Nickel Nanocone Arrays Coated Paper Electrode for Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors are considered as a promising candidate for power supplementation in wearable electronics due to their high power density. However, effectively fabricate flexible and low-cost supercapacitor electrodes in a big scale is still a key challenge. Herein we demonstrate a scalable fabrication method for hierarchical electrodes via metalizing air-laid paper and loading with MnO 2 as cathode active materials. To be specific, we coat a thin layer of Ni on air-laid paper by magnetron sputtering, then deposit Ni nanocone arrays (NNAs) on the Ni sputtered paper and finally deposit MnO 2 on the NNAs to obtain the NNAs@MnO 2 paper electrode. The as-prepared paper-based electrode possesses high conductivity and fine wettability, which facilitates the electrons and ions transporting through the conductive network. Additionally, this electrode provides large specific surface area with a hierarchical architecture. Thus the electrode shows high capacitance (451 F/g) and favorable cycle performance (92.9% capacity retention after cycling for 5000 times). By coupling with activated carbon (AC) coated on the NNAs conductive paper as anode, an NNAs paper-based asymmetric supercapacitor is constructed. Benefiting from the high mechanical durability and the 3D hierarchical architecture of the electrodes, the asymmetric supercapacitor exhibits excellent mechanical flexibility and high energy density (26.9 μWh/cm 2 at 1.08 mW/cm 2 ). This method can be easily scaled up to produce lightweight and low-cost conductive paper electrodes, making it promising for the application of flexible supercapacitors in wearable electronics.
Graphene-patched CNT/MnO2 nanocomposite papers for the electrode of high-performance flexible asymmetric supercapacitors

Abstract:MnO2 has been widely studied as the pseudo-capactive electrode material of high-performance supercapacitors for its large operating voltage, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, it suffers from low conductivity and being hardly handle as the electrodes of supercapacitors especially with flexibility, which largely limit its electrochemical performance and application. Herein, we report a novel ternary composite paper composed of reduced graphene sheet (GR)-patched carbon nanotube (CNT)/MnO2, which has controllable structures and prominent electrochemical properties for a flexible electrode of the supercapacitor. The composite paper was prepared by electrochemical deposition of MnO2 on a flexible CNT paper and further adsorption of GR on its surface to enhance the surface conductivity of the electrode and prohibit MnO2 nanospheres from detaching with the electrode. The presence of GR was found remarkably effective in enhancing the initial electrochemical capacitance of the composite paper from 280 F/g to 486.6 F/g. Furthermore, it ensures the stability of the capacitance after a long period of charge/discharge cycles. A flexible CNT/polyaniline/CNT/MnO2/GR asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled with this composite paper as an electrode and aqueous electrolyte gel as the separator. Its operating voltage reached 1.6 V, with an energy density at 24.8 Wh/kg. Such a composite structure derived from a multiscale assembly can offer not only a robust scaffold loading MnO2 nanospheres but also a conductive network for efficient ionic and electronic transport; thus, it is potentially promising as a novel electrode architecture for high-performance flexible energy storage devices.

Abstract:The eco-friendly conductive cotton textile is promising alternatives for the flexible substrates in wearable devices since the cotton is as an inexpensive natural fabric material and compatible in modern portable electronics with adequate electrical conductivity. In this work, flexible conductive cotton-based electrodes are prepared via a screen-printing method using the carbonaceous nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene with an additional component of conductive silver (Ag) powder and textile ink. The prepared conductive cotton electrodes exhibit lower sheet resistance (<10 Ω) along with superior mass loading (20-30 mg.cm-2). On the basis of the performance of cotton electrodes prepared, an all-solid-state flexible supercapacitor device was successfully fabricated which exhibits a high specific areal capacitance of 677.12 mF.cm-2 at 0.0125 mA.cm-2 for a suitable electrode composition (60% of Ag and 40% CNTs) using a PVA-KOH gel electrolyte. The flexible device endures a stable electrochemical performance under severe mechanical deformation using different bending angles (0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°) of the device and possesses excellent cyclic stability with the capacitance retention of ~80% even after 3000 CV cycles.

Abstract:Traditional porous carbon (PC)-based supercapacitors (SCs) are generally stiff and heavy owing to their rigid components and bulky additives, such as binders, conducting materials, and current collectors. Herein, a porous (574.5 m2 g−1), conductive (83.1 S cm−1), and flexible MXene (Ti3C2T x )/cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/PC hybrid film is prepared by strong interfacial interactions among its components via a facile vacuum-filtration method. Three-dimensional PC provides abundant micropores for charge storage and considerable amount of meso/macropores for fast diffusion of ions. Two-dimensional Ti3C2T x offers a significantly high conductivity of 2.6 × 103 S cm−1 and a good film-forming ability. A one-dimensional CNF ensures high mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 38.6 MPa for the hybrid film by binding the adjacent Ti3C2T x flakes and PC. Additionally, the presence of CNF and PC increases the interlayer distance between Ti3C2T x flakes, thereby providing more ion-accessible surface areas on Ti3C2T x and creating open gaps for fast ion transport. Benefiting from these electrochemically attractive properties, this film is further employed as a free-standing electrode to fabricate a high-performance quasi-solid-state SC, which demonstrates an ultrathin thickness of 0.2 mm, a high flexibility, a significantly high areal capacitance of 143 mF cm−2 at 0.1 mA cm−2, and a large areal energy density of 2.4 μWh cm−2 at 17.5 μW cm−2, with a high retention of ~50% even after increasing the power density by ~100 fold. This work will pave the way for developing free-standing MXene-based hybrid films that simultaneously possess excellent conductivity, good mechanical properties, and large charge storage capacity for flexible and high-performance SCs.

Abstract:In this study, we have successfully developed a series of low-cost, environmentally friendly, and high-performance carbon-based conductive inks with a three-dimensional micro-nano structure through a simple dispersion and ball-milling process, offering an array of desirable characteristics. Significantly, the carbon-based conductive inks remained stable even after a 30-day settling period. Furthermore, the conductive film, produced using screen printing techniques, demonstrated an impressive conductivity of 1.99 × 10 3 S/m. This remarkable conductivity highlights the ability of the films to consistently maintain a robust conductivity network, even when subjected to 5000 mechanical bending/releasing tests. Expanding on the success of our carbon-based conductive inks, we harnessed their potential in the production of all-solid-state flexible Micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) with an interdigital structure, utilizing screen-printing technology. The resulting MSCs exhibited outstanding performance metrics, including a notable areal energy density of 1.47 μWh cm -2 and an area power density of 0.2 mW cm -2 . Moreover, these MSCs demonstrated remarkable cycle stability, retaining 96.3% of their capacitance after 20,000 cycles. Additionally, their excellent mechanical flexibility was evident as they experienced only a minor 2.98% capacitance degradation after undergoing 5000 bending/releasing cycles. These findings highlight the enormous potential of our work in facilitating the scalable production of wearable and portable electronic products.

Abstract:Abstract Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their porosity and well-defined structures are considered to be very promising electrode materials for the construction of high-performance supercapacitor (SC). In this paper, manganese-based metal-organic framework (Mn-MOF) were prepared on the surface of carbon cloth (CC) by a facile hydrothermal method. The morphology and structure of the electrode material were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Its electrochemical studies show that the Mn-MOF electrode materials exhibit lower charge transfer resistance, the excellent specific capacitance of 433.5 mF/cm2 in 1.0 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution at the current density of 0.8 mA/cm2. It is noteworthy that the flexible electrode have excellent cycle stability and 105% capacitance retention even after 5000 cycles at a current density of 5 mA/cm2. The excellent electrochemical performance of Mn-MOF/CC flexible electrode materials can be attributed to its three-dimensional porous structure.

Abstract:Flexible solid-state supercapacitors (SCs) have shown great potential in portable electronics. However, the development of MnO2-based electrodes for flexible SCs is hampered by the low energy density, especially on the whole electrode basis, as a result of the small mass loading and poor utilization of MnO2. Here high mass loading of 4.5mg/cm2 and large capacitance of 464F/g (2088 mF/cm2) for MnO2 nanograsses were achieved by taking use of porous carbon cloth (TCC) which has large specific surface area. Benefiting from the full utilization of MnO2, high energy density of 841 μWh/cm2 and robust cyclic stability (96% capacitance retention after 20000 cycles) are achieved by assembling an efficient asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) with 2V operating voltage. These results open up new paths for developing high-performance electrode materials and applying for advanced energy storage devices.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors are promising energy storage devices in wearable smart electronics. Exploring cost-efficient electrodes with high capacitance would promote the wide-scale application of such capacitors. Herein, in order to explore a methodology for preparing low cost, flexible, tough, and up-scalable supercapacitor electrodes, silk textile is directly carbonized to make a conductive free-standing textile substrate. Through mildly baking the surfactant-free Ti3C2Tx flakes suspension loaded on the carbonized silk cloth, a uniform and adhesive coating consisting of nanometer-thick Ti3C2Tx flakes is well established on the conductive fabric support, forming a MXene-coated flexible textile electrode. The fabricated electrode exhibits a high areal capacitance of 362 mF/cm2 with excellent cyclability and flexibility. Moreover, capacitance changes neglegibly under the bending deformation mode. This study elucidates the feasibility of using silk-derived carbon cloth from biomss for MXene-based flexible supercapacitor.
Advanced (Cu,Co)Se2 Nanocubes and Ti‐MXene Based Screen Printed Electrodes for High Performance Flexible Microsupercapacitors

Abstract:This study introduces a unique method for creating an asymmetric flexible micro supercapacitor(FMSC) by screen printing (Cu,Co)Se2 and Ti3C2Tx inks. The FMSC exhibits high capacitance, rate capability, mechanical resilience and achieving an energy density of 8.06 μwh cm−2 and a power density of 5 mW cm−2. It also shows remarkable cycle stability with enhanced performance and flexibility for wearable electronics. Nowadays, the demand for portable micro‐energy storage devices with high energy density and scalable printing with cost‐effective fabrication for microsupercapacitors (MSC) are essential. Furthermore, the urgent need for this high‐performance MSC to meet all industrial sector requirements are very challenging. Herein, the screen printable MSC with high energy density is demonstrated by using copper hexacyanocobaltate (CuHCCo) derived (Cu,Co)Se2 nanocubes as the positive electrode and Ti‐MXene (Ti3C2Tx) as the negative electrode. The prepared battery type (Cu,Co)Se2 nanocubes greatly enhance the high electrochemical activity and active surface area. As a result, it delivers a high specific capacity of 602 C g−1 at the current density of 1 A g−1. The fabricated screen printable asymmetric MSC has enhanced ion‐to‐electron transfer in printable microelectrodes with numerous electrochemical active sites and delivered the high areal capacitance of 58 mA cm−2 at the current density of 1 mA cm−2 with a wide potential window. The device gives a high energy density of 8.06 μWh cm−2 and a high power density of 5 mW cm−2. These results demonstrate the new strategies of fabricating electrode materials in screen printable asymmetric MSC and show promising in microscale energy storage devices in the miniaturized devices with sustainable self‐powered compatibility.

Flexible High-Performance and Screen-Printed Symmetric Supercapacitor Using Hierarchical Rodlike V3O7 Inks

Abstract:The emergence of the Internet of things stimulates the pursuit of flexible and miniaturized supercapacitors. As an advanced technology, screen printing displays vigor and tremendous potential in fabricating supercapacitors, but the adoption of high-performance ink is a great challenge. Here, hierarchical V3O7 with rodlike texture was prepared via a facile template–solvothermal route; and the morphology, component, and valence bond information are characterized meticulously. Then, the screen-printed inks composed of V3O7, acetylene black, and PVDF are formulated, and the rheological behaviors are studied detailedly. Benefitting from the orderly aligned ink, the optimal screen-printed electrode can exhibit an excellent specific capacitance of 274.5 F/g at 0.3 A/g and capacitance retention of 81.9% after 5000 cycles. In addition, a flexible V3O7 symmetrical supercapacitor (SSC) is screen-printed and assembled on the Ag current collector, exhibiting a decent areal specific capacitance of 322.5 mF/cm2 at 0.5 mA/cm2, outstanding cycling stability of 90.8% even after 5000 cycles, satisfactory maximum energy density of 129.45 μWh/cm2 at a power density of 0.42 mW/cm2, and remarkable flexibility and durability. Furthermore, a single SSC enables the showing of an actual voltage of 1.70 V after charging, and no obvious self-discharge phenomenon is found, revealing the great applied value in supply power. Therefore, this work provides a facile and low-cost reference of screen-printed ink for large-scale fabrication of flexible supercapacitors.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as electrode materials for supercapacitors have attracted extensive attention due to their porous structure. However, the poor conductivity of MOFs limits the charge transfer. In this work, Mn-MOF/carbon nanotube (CNT) composites were grown directly on carbon cloth (CC) in one step by the traditional hydrothermal synthesis of MOFs to improve the electrical conductivity of Mn-MOFs. The structural and performance tests show that CNTs, as a conductive backbone, can connect Mn-MOFs to each other, which can obviously solve the problem of poor conductivity of MOF materials. The Mn-MOFs/CNTs/CC electrodes show a larger specific capacitance and excellent cycling stability by electrochemical tests. Compared to the original Mn-MOF electrode, the surface capacitance obtained increases from 188.8 mF·cm −2 to 385.8 mF·cm −2 at a current density of 0.8 mA·cm −2 and maintains a high capacitance retention of 118% after 5000 charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 5 mA·cm −2 . This work confirms that the in- situ synthesis of MOFs and CNTs has promising applications in fabric-based flexible supercapacitors.

Scalable Fabrication Of Mno2 Nanostructure Deposited On Free-Standing Ni Nanocone Arrays For Ultrathin, Flexible, High-Performance Micro-Supercapacitort

Abstract:Ultrathin and flexible power sources are essential for the rapid development of portable and wearable electronics. The deployment of 3-dimensional (3-D) nanostructured materials on the current collectors has recently emerged as a promising strategy for preparing high-performance supercapacitors. Additionally, it is equally important to develop an appropriate device packaging technique, so as to maximize the improvement of the electrode performance characteristic. Herein, we develop a simple and efficient method for fabricating ultrathin and flexible supercapacitor electrodes containing a manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanostructure deposited onto 3-D nickel nanocone arrays (NCAs). The MnO2-NCAs electrode was prepared by an electro-deposition technology, which involves the cathode deposition of NCAs on a titanium carrier film as the current collector and subsequent anode deposited from the MnO2 nanostructures as the active material. The electrode can be peeled off from the carrier film and thus the resulting freestanding electrode is as thin as 3 mu m, and exhibits outstanding mechanical robustness, high specific capacitance (632 F g(-1)), enhanced energy density (52.2 W h kg(-1)) and excellent cycle performance (95.3% retention after 20 000 cycles). We further fabricated ultrathin supercapacitors with a total thickness of similar to 27 mu m, which achieved unprecedented features including superior energy density by volume (2.7 x 10(-3) W h cm(-3)), superior flexibility and reliability. We demonstrated the application of the MnO2-NCAs supercapacitor as an ultrathin power source such as driving a LED indicator. This technology may find vast applications in future wearable electronics.

Abstract:Flexible 3D nanoarchitectures have received tremendous interest recently because of their potential applications in flexible/wearable energy storage devices. Herein, 3D intertwined nitrogen-doped carbon encapsulated mesoporous vanadium nitride nanowires (MVN@NC NWs) are investigated as thin, lightweight, and self-supported electrodes for flexible supercapacitors (SCs). The MVN NWs have abundant active sites accessible to charge storage, and the N-doped carbon shell suppresses electrochemical dissolution of the inner MVN NWs in an alkaline electrolyte, leading to excellent capacitive properties. The flexible MVN@NC NWs film electrode delivers a high areal capacitance of 282 mF cm(-2) and exhibits excellent long-term stability with 91.8% capacitance retention after 12 000 cycles in a KOH electrolyte. All-solid-state flexible SCs assembled by sandwiching two flexible MVN@NC NWs film electrodes with alkaline poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), sodium polyacrylate, and KOH gel electrolyte boast a high volumetric capacitance of 10.9 F cm(-3), an energy density of 0.97 mWh cm(-3), and a power density of 2.72 W cm(-3) at a current density of 0.051 A cm(-3) based on the entire cell. By virtue of the excellent mechanical flexibility, high capacitance, and large energy/power density, the self-supported MVN@NC NWs paper-like electrodes have large potential applications in portable and wearable flexible electronics.

Abstract:Herein, a facile co-deposition method is developed to synthesize carbon nanotube (CNT)@MnO2 heterostructures grown on carbon fibre paper (CFP) and flexible carbon fibre cloth (CFC) (denoted as CNT@MnO2/CFP and CNT@MnO2/CFC, respectively). A three-dimensional (3D) interconnected CNT network of highly conductive, ultrathin CNT@MnO2 heterostructure nanosheets with a nanoporous structure and with epitaxial growth of MnO2 on the CNTs achieves excellent capacitance performance for flexible MnO2-based supercapacitor materials. The CNT@MnO2/CFP fabricated in an electrolyte with CNT content of 0.5 g L−1 (0.5-CNT@MnO 2/CFP) obtains mass, area and volume specific capacitance values of 393.0 F g−1, 585.0 mF cm−2 and 29.3 F cm−3, respectively, at a charge-discharge rate of 0.25 A g−1. A flexible asymmetric supercapacitor device was successfully assembled which possesses a high energy density of 27.8 Wh kg−1 at a high power density of 250 W kg−1 (0.75 mA cm−2) and a high capacitance retention of 84% after 10,000 performs at a charge-discharge rate of 15 mA cm−2 (5 A g−1). Our work confirmed that this structure can effectively improving the utilization and specific capacitance of MnO2, and the simplicity of the fabrication and the environmentally friendly characteristics of the deposition liquid make this approach suitable for practical production.

Abstract:The increasing commercialization of flexible electronic products has sparked a rising interest in flexible wearable energy storage devices. Supercapacitors are positioned as one of the systems with the most potential due to their distinctive advantages: high power density, rapid charge and discharge rates, and long cycle life. However, electrode materials face challenges in providing excellent mechanical strength while ensuring sufficient energy density. This study presents a method for constructing a flexible composite electrode material with high capacitance and mechanical performance by electrochemically depositing high-quality manganese dioxide (MnO2) onto the surface of a nanocellulose (CNF) and carbon nanotube (CNT) conductive film. In this electrode material, the CNF/CNT composite film serves as a flexible conductive substrate, offering excellent mechanical properties (modulus of 3.3 GPa), conductivity (55 S/cm), and numerous active sites. Furthermore, at the interface between MnO2 and the CNF/CNT substrate, C-O-Mn bonds are formed, promoting a tight connection between the composite materials. The assembled symmetric flexible supercapacitor (FSC) demonstrates impressive performance, with an areal specific capacitance of 934 mF/cm2, an energy density of 43.10 Wh/kg, a power density of 166.67 W/kg and a long cycle life (85 % Capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles), suggesting that they hold promise for FSC applications.
OH-WCNT/Nb 2 CTx MXene sponge for flexible free-standing high-performance supercapacitors

Abstract:With the downsizing of personal portable electronic devices, the development of high-performance flexible/bendable energy storage devices for powering active devices have become imperative. Here, a typical MXCNT flexible electrode is produced by an uncomplicated filtration process using a porous PAN nano-fiber membrane as a support skeleton and the OH-WCNT/Nb 2 CTx MXene conductive sponge as electrode active materials. The optimum MX 0.5 CNT 0.5 electrode exhibits a large specific capacitance of 8 F/cm 3 at 0.5 A/cm 3 and a satisfactory cycling stability of 92.2% after 10000 charge/discharge cycles. In addition, the MX 0.5 CNT 0.5 //MX 0.5 CNT 0.5 symmetrical supercapacitor demonstrates excellent rate performance with only about 32.4% specific capacitance loss at 50 A/g and astounding cycling stability of 95.9% capacitance retention after undergoing 5000 charge/discharge cycles. The superior electrochemical performance is a result of the porous conductive sponge structure, which allows the construction of multi-dimensional electron/ion transport channels at the electrode/electrolyte interface and facilitates the reaction kinetics of the electrode. Furthermore, the tight combination of OH-WCNT and Nb 2 CTx MXene can reinforce the electrical conductivity and form a fast and secure charge conduction network, boosting the electrochemical characteristics of the composites. Porous conductive sponges constructed offer a competitive advantage for flexible supercapacitors and provide research leads for the development of high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Textile-based supercapacitors are promising flexible energy storage device that can provide stable power supply for wearable electronic devices. Herein, solid-state textile-based coplanar supercapacitors have been prepared by utilizing the cost-effective multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as integrated electrodes and current collectors. The integrated electrodes are fabricated with facile screen-printing process and show great potential of mass production. By optimizing the concentration of MWCNTs ink, porous and uniform conductive electrode network is formed on fabric substrate, which provide more active sites for electrolyte ions adsorption. The textile-based coplanar supercapacitors show great capacitive behavior and gravimetric specific capacitance of 26.4 F g−1 at scan rate of 10 mV s−1. Moreover, there is no significant change on the electrochemical performance of textile-based coplanar supercapacitor under dynamically bending with relatively high strain rate of 20% s−1, which demonstrates excellent flexibility and electrochemical stability. It provides an important strategy for the large-scale application and development of flexible supercapacitors.

Abstract:The development of high-performance and flexible supercapacitors is of urgent demand but still challenging. MXene, a novel two-dimensional material, has metallic conductivity, good hydrophilicity, and high redox activity. Significantly, its good electrochemical and mechanical properties suggest its great potential in flexible supercapacitors. However, the poor interlayer conductivity and self-stacking of MXene flakes hinder the charge transfer and ion transport. Herein, a three-dimensional porous structure composed of MXene, carbon nanocoils (CNCs) and Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) (denoted as MXene/CNC/PP) has been successfully prepared by a facile drop-coating method for flexible film electrode. The CNCs, having unique 3D helical structures and excellent dispersity, insert into the MXene flakes to prevent their over stack and provide spaces and channels for electrolyte storage and ion transport inside the composite structure. Meanwhile, the CNCs also act as highly conductive bridges to connect the MXene flakes, enhancing the charge transfer. To increase the stability of the composite structure, the conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS was selected as an conductive binder to prepare self-supported MXene/CNC/PP film electrodes without additional additives. The MXene/CNC/PP electrode exhibits an areal capacitance of 232 mF cm−2 at 10 mV s−1 with superior rate capability, excellent cycling stability and flexibility. This paper provides a new strategy for construction of wearable high-performance flexible electrodes and supercapacitors.
