Abstract:This paper proposed a fluidic tunable lens with polymer membrane and multi-flow structure. The designed lens mainly consists of five optical layers including one polymer membrane, two solid layers and two liquid layers. A series of slime hexagonal holes are drilled in the solid layers and the lens holders, allowing the optical liquid flowing among the different layers. The integrated structure of the fluidic lens was presented, as well as the lens composition and fabrication process. The deformation process of the fluidic lens are measured and analyzed, and the optical property are simulated using Zemax software. Images captured through a prototype lens at various rotating angles presents almost identical patterns and the same image quality, showing good stability to gravity. The lens focal length can be adjusted flexibly from 32.3 mm to 14.3 mm under a tiny injection volume of 86.4 uL. Numerical analyses show that the lens distortion is less than 3% and relative illumination is above 0.72. The fluidic tunable lens shows the potential to be used in various compact, low cost and stable optical systems.

Abstract:In recent years, the researches on variable-focus liquid lenses have already shown their prospects in optical systems. Especially the variable-focus liquid lens based on electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD), which can control its focal length by only changing the applied voltage, have the attractive advantages of a high degree of miniaturization, various structures, low power dissipation, highly tunable of focal length, etc. The principle of EWOD was introduced, and the review of currently variable-focus liquid lenses based on EWOD was presented.

Abstract:A solid liquid mixed tunable lens with multilayered structure is proposed. The designed lens utilizes a solid-state elastic polymer, optical liquid, and glass as the optical medium, and adjusts the focus by changing the surface curvature of the elastic polymer. The integrated structure of the tunable lens is presented, as well as detailed descriptions of the lens materials, fabrication, and assembling process. Images captured through the tunable lens under different displacement loads are presented, and the relationship among the displacement load, curvature radius, and effective focal length is analyzed. Additionally, the optical property of the tunable lens is simulated using the ZEMAX software. A change in focal length from 14.8 mm to 30 mm is demonstrated within the tiny 0.12 mm variation of the displacement load. Numerical analyses show that the lens distortion is less than 2%, and the modulation transfer function reaches 67 line pairs per mm. The solid liquid mixed tunable lens shows the potential for developing a compact, low-aberration, and stable optical system. (C) 2015 Society of PhotoOptical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

Abstract:Lenses with tunable focal length play important roles in nature by helping species avoid predators and capture prey. Many practical devices mimic lens concept for imaging, sensing, and detection. This review covers fundamental optics of lenses and its extension to lenses made of liquid crystals (LCs). Three main types of LC lenses are described, namely, lenses with curved surfaces, flat gradient-index lenses and composite lenses. The review discusses advantages of LC lenses over their isotropic counterparts, challenges in their fabrication and control, as well as a variety of potential applications. We also discuss the current challenges associated with nematic LC lenses and their solutions. LC lenses are already having significant impacts on optics and optometry, and these impacts will grow with discovering new LC materials and new lens designs.

Abstract:Liquid opens up a new stage of device tunability and gradually replaced solid-state devices and mechanical tuning. It optimizes the control method and improves the dynamic range of many optical devices, exhibiting several attractive features, such as rapid prototyping, miniaturization, easy integration and low power consumption. The advantage makes optical devices widely used in imaging, optical control, telecommunications, autopilot and lab-on-a-chip. Here, we review the tunable liquid devices, including isotropic liquid and anisotropic liquid crystal devices. Due to the unique characteristics of the two types of liquids, the tuning principles and tuning methods are distinguished and demonstrated in detail firstly and then some recent progress in this field, covering the adaptive lens, beam controller, beam filter, bending waveguide, iris, resonator and display devices. Finally, the limitations and future perspectives of the current liquid devices are discussed.

Abstract:Liquid crystals (LCs) possess some typical liquid properties, such as fluidity, the inability to support shear, and the formation and coalescence of droplets, which exhibit optical, electrical, and magnetic anisotropic properties, and give materials various physical properties. Composite films composed of LCs and polymers have provided a new field of LC science and technology and have attracted great attention over the past years due to their applications in displays, light shutters, fiber-optic communications, switchable windows, photonic crystals, and augmented reality/virtual reality devices. These composite films, such as polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs), polymer-stabilized liquid crystals (PSLCs), and polymer-dispersed and polymer-stabilized liquid crystals (PD&PSLCs), are fabricated by phase separation methods as well as electrospinning and microfluidic techniques. The combination of LCs and polymers will yield a variety of novel characteristics such as switchable optical transmittance, broadband optical reflectivity, excellent optical diffusivity in diffusers for backlight units of liquid-crystal displays, high sensitivity to electric field, magnetic field, and chemical stimulation, and high ion transport speeds for smart windows, microlenses, sensors, actuators, and energy storage devices such as dielectric capacitors, dye-sensitized solar cells, thermoelectric devices, and solid batteries. This Review gives new insights and understanding about LC/polymer composite films that are particularly suitable for large-area electrically switchable windows and multiple related fields.

Abstract:Liquid crystal (LC) droplets are highly attractive for applications in privacy windows, optical switches, optical vortices, optical microresonators, microlenses, and biosensors due to their ease of fabrication and easy alignment at surfaces. This review presents the latest advancements in LC droplets, which have nematic, chiral nematic, and twist–bend nematic and ferroelectric nematic phases, or blue phases. Finally, it discusses the challenges and opportunities for applications based on LC droplets. The main challenges encompass the precise control of internal structures and defects to meet diverse application requirements, enhancing stability and durability across various environments, reducing large-scale production costs to improve commercial feasibility, increasing response speeds to external stimuli to adapt to rapidly changing scenarios, and developing tunable LC droplets to achieve broader functionalities.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are a unique class of materials that combine rubber elasticity with liquid crystalline anisotropy to produce exceptional physical and optical properties such as actuation, soft elasticity, and birefringence. This review gives a brief overview of the physics behind liquid crystals and classifications of LCEs before discussing the methods traditionally used to synthesize LCEs, the new methods of synthesis that have emerged within the past several years, and the developing applications of LCEs. The review begins by discussing the organization of liquid crystals in LCEs and how their coupling to the polymer backbone affects their macroscopic properties. Traditional LCE synthesis methods and their drawbacks in terms of moving towards applications are then touched upon, as well as emerging chemistries that eliminate many of the challenges associated with LCE synthesis. Thiol-Michael reactions and covalent adaptable networks, which allow for bulk sample synthesis and repeated programming, respectively, are discussed at length. Finally, applications of LCEs in 4D printing and as biomedical devices are illustrated.

Abstract:Optical lenses with electrically controllable focal length are of growing interest, in order to reduce the complexity, size, weight, response time and power consumption of conventional focusing/zooming systems, based on glass lenses displaced by motors. They might become especially relevant for diverse robotic and machine vision-based devices, including cameras not only for portable consumer electronics (e.g. smart phones) and advanced optical instrumentation (e.g. microscopes, endoscopes, etc.), but also for emerging applications like small/micro-payload drones and wearable virtual/augmented-reality systems. This paper reviews the most widely studied strategies to obtain such varifocal “smart lenses”, which can electrically be tuned, either directly or via electro-mechanical or electro-thermal coupling. Only technologies that ensure controllable focusing of multi-chromatic light, with spatial continuity (i.e. continuous tunability) in wavefronts and focal lengths, as required for visible-range imaging, are considered. Both encapsulated fluid-based lenses and fully elastomeric lenses are reviewed, ranging from proof-of-concept prototypes to commercially available products. They are classified according to the focus-changing principles of operation, and they are described and compared in terms of advantages and drawbacks. This systematic overview should help to stimulate further developments in the field.

Abstract:In this paper, a new type of liquid lens based on electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) is demonstrated. It consists of a transparent liquid droplet as lens on a hydrophobic dielectric film, a patterned indium tin oxide (ITO) film as a set of transparent electrodes underneath and a glass substrate. By changing the applied voltage on the set of electrodes, the shape and location of the droplet can be adjusted reversibly which tune the focal length and position of the lens. It has some good qualities such as wide variability of focal length up to 20%, fast response time, low applied voltage and low power consumption. It can be used widely in optical application.

Abstract:Multifunctional integration is the development direction of electrowetting liquid lenses. We propose an electrowetting liquid lens integrating adaptive liquid iris (ELL-LI) with adjustable radial aperture and axial position. The liquid iris and the liquid lens are both driven by electrowetting on dielectric and integrated in the same chamber together, and share the same conductive liquid part. The liquid iris does not need the flat support of a traditional liquid iris. The aperture can change from 1.16 to 5.11 mm. The iris can move up and down in the axial direction, according to different working electrodes on the side wall. Experiments show that our proposed ELL-LI has the functions of depth of field expansion and field adjustment, which has a great application prospect in imaging systems, such as camera imaging systems, etc.

Abstract:A variable-focus liquid lens based on EWOD (electrowetting on dielectric) has been developed. It comprises a top glass plate, a ground-electrode-involved bottom glass plate and a counter-electrode-involved cylindrical glass housing which contains two immiscible fluids of air and water with different refractive indices. By changing the applied voltage across the electrodes, we can tune the meniscus between the two fluids and focus length of the lens. The experimental results show that the prototype of the liquid lens could refocus on objects from 2 centimeters up to infinity away within 10 ms using a direct voltage within 40V

Abstract:We introduce and shortly summarize a variety of more recent aspects of lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs), which have drawn the attention of the liquid crystal and soft matter community and have recently led to an increasing number of groups studying this fascinating class of materials, alongside their normal activities in thermotopic LCs. The diversity of topics ranges from amphiphilic to inorganic liquid crystals, clays and biological liquid crystals, such as viruses, cellulose or DNA, to strongly anisotropic materials such as nanotubes, nanowires or graphene oxide dispersed in isotropic solvents. We conclude our admittedly somewhat subjective overview with materials exhibiting some fascinating properties, such as chromonics, ferroelectric lyotropics and active liquid crystals and living lyotropics, before we point out some possible and emerging applications of a class of materials that has long been standing in the shadow of the well-known applications of thermotropic liquid crystals, namely displays and electro-optic devices.

Abstract:A novel configuration of variable-focus liquid lens based on an electrowetting-on-dielectric technique is presented,which consists of a glass slide coated with a conductive Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) film,a hydrophobic dielectric film,a hollow conical metal ring suspended right above a gap between the slide and the ring,and the lens liquid (water). By changing the voltage applied to a grounded metal ring and a ITO control electrode,both the position and curvature of the liquid meniscus can be reversibly adjusted,and the focal length of the lens can be tuned. The shapes of the suspended ring in the present work are also designed to self-center the lens liquid,then influences of different shapes of the suspended rings on the variation of optical power of the meniscus are discussed. Experimental results show that the liquid lens at a good imaging quality is able to focus on objects away from 2.5 cm up to infinity at a 40 V power supply and also able to offer the variation range of the optical power up to 40 m-1. Because of the properties such as low consumption,small sizes and high reversibility and so on,the demonstrated configuration provides great advantages in the field of microlens.

Abstract:A novel self-centered variable focus liquid lens based on electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) is presented, which consists of a glass plate coated with two transparent layers of conductive ITO film and hydrophobic dielectric film, a conical tube partly covered with hydrophobic film positioned with a gap above the glass plate and a water droplet. By changing the voltage applied to the droplet and the ITO control electrode, both the position and curvature of the meniscus between the two immiscible fluids can be reversibly adjusted, thus realizing a lens of variable focal length. The experimental results show that the prototype of the liquid lens with 50 V power supply is able to focus on objects from 2 centimeters up to infinity away with good imaging quality.

Abstract:Photodeformable polymer materials have a far influence in the fields of flexibility and intelligence. The stimulation energy is converted into mechanical energy through molecular synergy. Among kinds of photodeformable polymer materials, liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) photodeformable materials have been a hot topic in recent years. Chromophores such as azobenzene, α-cyanostilbene, and 9,10-dithiopheneanthracene have been widely used in LCP, which are helpful for designing functional molecules to increase the penetration depth of light to change physical properties. Due to the various applications of photodeformable polymer materials, there are many excellent reports in intelligent field. In this review, we have systematized LCP containing azobenzene into 3 categories depending on the degree of crosslinking liquid crystalline elastomers, liquid crystalline networks, and linear LCPs. Other structural, typical polymer materials and their applications are discussed. Current issues faced and future directions to be developed for photodeformable polymer materials are also summarized.
