Abstract:A simple microemulsion-based method has been developed to synthesize ZnCo2(C2O4)(3) nanowires that can be transformed to porous ZnCo2O4 nanowires under annealing conditions. The morphology of porous ZnCo2O4 nanowires can be tuned by the initial ZnCo2(C2O4)(3) nanowires and the annealing temperatures. The as-synthesized porous ZnCo2O4 nanowires have been applied as anode materials of Li-ion batteries, which show superior capacity and cycling performance. The porous one-dimensional (ID) nanostructures and large surface area are responsible for the superior performance. Moreover, it is indicated that porous ZnCo2O4 nanowires synthesized at low annealing temperature (500 degrees C) show larger capacity and better cycling performance than that prepared at high annealing temperature (700 degrees C), because of their higher porosity and larger surface area.

Abstract:Commercial cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries require both excellent electrochemical and processing performance. Nanoscaled cathode materials with high surface area usually have low compacted density and low loading of active materials on the electrode because of high-content usage of conductive agent and binder, which is expected to be solved by incorporating one-dimensional (1D) particles into dense three-dimensional (3D) structure. In this work, a topochemical method is used to synthesize high-capacity Li-rich cathode material Li1.13Ni0.30Mn0.57O2 with controllable 3D and 1D hybrid structure containing nanothorn spheres and nanorods by using γ-MnO2 and β-MnO2 as templates. Structural and electrochemical lithium insertion/desertion properties are investigated. Experimental results show that Li1.13Ni0.30Mn0.57O2 with well-designed 3D structure exhibits superior electrochemical performance especially higher volumetric capacity than 1D material.

Abstract:Porous MnCo2O4 hollow nanocages have been fabricated via a simple template method using carbon spheres as a template. The hydrophilic surface of carbon spheres can adsorb Mn(2+) and Co(2+) ions simultaneously to form Mn,Co-adsorbed carbon spheres. The calcination of Mn,Co-adsorbed carbon spheres can result in porous hollow nanocages of MnCo2O4. The MnCo2O4 hollow nanocages are built by nanoscale MnCo2O4 crystals. Because of the unique porous hollow nanostructures, the resulting MnCo2O4/KB cathode shows an efficient electrocatalytic performance in LiTFSI/TEGDME electrolyte-based Li-O2 batteries. The MnCo2O4 hollow nanocages as the cathode catalysts can deliver better performance during the discharge/charge processes and good cycle stability compared with that of the pure KB carbon. The preliminary results manifest that porous MnCo2O4 hollow nanocages are promising high-performance cathode catalysts for Li-O2 batteries. This template technique is a simple, general, low-cost and controllable method and can be extended to prepare other transition metal oxide hollow nanostructures.

Abstract:By virtue of complexing Ni/Co/Mn ions with glucose under solvothermal conditions, well-defined spherical Ni/Co/Mn-gluconate with tunable size and elemental composition is prepared and readily converted into yolk-shelled Li(NixCoyMn1-x-y)O-2. Abstract:Lithium-rich layered metal oxides have drawn much recent attention due to their high rechargeable capacity of 250-300 mA h g(-1). Herein, we report the synthesis of porous Li[Li0.2Mn0.534Ni0.133Co0.133]O-2 metal oxide powders using a facile polymer-thermolysis method. X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD) results show that a well-crystallized layered structure was obtained when the calcination temperatures reach 800 degrees C. Pores in the range of 100-200 nm are observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The porous Li [Li0.2Mn0.534Ni0.133Co0.133]O-2 synthesized at 850 degrees C shows much superior electrochemical performance to the sample synthesized by the traditional coprecipitation-calcination method, with a high initial coulombic efficiency of 87% and initial discharge capacity of 245.4 mA h g(-1) at 15 mA g(-1) in the voltage window 2-4.6 V. A capacity retention of 81% was obtained after 300 cycles at 300 mA g(-1). The higher capacity and improved rate performance of porous Li[Li0.2Mn0.534Ni0.133Co0.133]O-2 can be predominantly attributed to enhanced Li+ intercalation kinetics resulting from the highly porous structure.

Abstract:The octahedral core-shell Li-rich layered cathode material of Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 can be synthesized via an ingenious coprecipitation-gel method without subsequent annealing. On the basis of detailed X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy characterizations, it is suggested that the as-prepared material consists of an octahedral morphology and a new type of core-shell structure with a spinel-layered heterostructure inside, which is the result of overgrowth of the spinel structure with {111} facets on {001} facets of the layered structure in a single orientation. The surface area of Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 crystals where the spinel phase is located possesses sufficient Li and O vacancies, resulting in the reinsertion of Li into position after the first charge and maintenance of the interface stability via the replenishment of oxygen from the bulk region. Compared to that synthesized by the traditional coprecipitation method, the Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 synthesized by the coprecipitation-gel method exhibits higher discharge capacity and Coulombic efficiency, from 73.9% and 251.5 mAh g-1 for the spherical polycrystal material to 86.2% and 291.4 mAh g-1.

Abstract:Macroporous Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 cathode materials with high crystallinity and hexagonal ordering are synthesized by aerogel template followed by solid state reaction. High discharge capacities of 244.0 mA h g−1 and 153.9 mA h g−1 are obtained for the Li-rich layered oxide synthesized at 800 °C at current densities of 200 mA g−1 and 2000 mA g−1 between 2.0 V and 4.8 V. Increasing the synthesis temperature to 900 °C, the macroporous Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 delivers a high discharge capacity of 220.2 mA h g−1 at a current density of 200 mA g−1 with a capacity retention of 89.1% after 50 cycles, 129.8 mA h g−1 at a current density of 2000 mA g−1 and almost no capacity fading after 120 cycles. The diffusion coefficients of Li+ in the Li-rich layered oxide determined by galvanostatic intermittent titration technique are in the range of 5.0 × 10−18−8.0 × 10−14 cm2 s−1. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicates that the macroporous structure with good particle contact of the layered oxide can improve its rate capability and cyclic stability.

Abstract:A facile and effective route was developed for the fabrication of LiFe0.2Mn1.8O4 with porous structures by using Pluronic P-123 as a soft template, based on a nitrate decomposition method. The resultant LiFe0.2Mn1.8O4 was characterized by XRD, SEM, aswell as N-2 adsorption/desorption measurements which showed a porous structure with a pore size centered at 20 nm. When used as cathode materials in lithium battery, the as-synthesized LiFe0.2Mn1.8O4 exhibited a discharge capacity of 122mAhg (1) at 1 C and 102mAhg (1) at 5 C. Moreover, after 500 cycles, the capacity retention (108mAhg (1)) reached 88% of the initial capacity at 1 C. As compared with conventional cathode LiMn2O4, the high performance is believed to originate from the combined effects of porous structure, iron doping and highly crystalline nature of the obtained LiFe0.2Mn1.8O4. This strategy is expected to allow the fabrication of other multiple metal oxides with porous structures for high performance cathode materials. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:3D porous MnO/C anode materials with controllable pore size are rationally designed and synthesized by a facile template-free strategy. The MnxZn1-xCO3 (x = 1, 2/3, 1/2 and 1/3) precursors were prepared by an ultrasonic-assisted co-precipitation method, and then heated with glucose in a reducing atmosphere to obtain a series of MnO/C microspheres through topochemical conversion. These MnO/C microspheres consist of nanosized primary particles and have interconnected pore architectures with high specific surface areas of up to 111.4 m(2) g(-1). Adjusting the Zn/Mn molar ratio of MnxZn1-xCO3 can easily tune the pore size of the MnO/C materials from 14.9 nm to 31.8 nm. Electrochemical performances of the MnO/C materials were found to be strongly correlated with their porous structures. The MnO/C material with optimized pore size exhibits a high reversible capacity (846 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1)), superior rate capability (406 mA h g(-1) at 3200 mA g(-1)) and excellent cycling stability. This strategy can be extended to prepare other candidate electrode materials.
Hydrothermal-template synthesis and electrochemical properties of Co3O4/nitrogen-doped hemisphere-porous graphene composites with 3D heterogeneous structure

Abstract:Despite the high capacity of Co3O4 employed in lithium-ion battery anodes, the reduced conductivity and grievous volume change of Co3O4 during long cycling of insertion/extraction of lithium-ions remain a challenge. Herein, an optimized nanocomposite, Co3O4/nitrogen-doped hemisphere-porous graphene composite (Co3O4/N-HPGC), is synthesized by a facile hydrothermal-template approach with polystyrene (PS) microspheres as a template. The characterization results demonstrate that Co3O4 nanoparticles are densely anchored onto graphene layers, nitrogen elements are successfully introduced by carbamide and the nanocomposites maintain the hemispherical porous structure. As an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the composite material not only maintains a relatively high lithium storage capacity (the first discharge specific capacity can reach 2696 mA h g-1), but also shows significantly improved rate performance (1188 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, 344 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1) and enhanced cycling stability (683 mA h g-1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g-1). The enhanced electrochemical properties of Co3O4/N-HPGC nanocomposites can be ascribed to the synergistic effects of Co3O4 nanoparticles, novel hierarchical structure with hemisphere-pores and nitrogen-containing functional groups of the nanomaterials. Therefore, the developed strategy can be extended as a universal and scalable approach for integrating various metal oxides into graphene-based materials for energy storage and conversion applications.
Synthesis and Evaluation of Microspherical Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 Through Carbon Dioxides-assisted Co-precipitation Method for Lithium-ion Battery

Abstract:Lithium-rich layered electrode materials are of interest as a promising candidate of cathodes for lithium-ion batteries because of their excellent electrochemical properties. The electrochemical performance of these materials is mainly regulated by preparation conditions during synthesis and calcination process. Here, microspherical Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 (LMNCO) particles are synthesized through steady pH value control with carbon dioxides bubbling method in co-precipitation process using a simple reactor. SEM images present that CP-LMNCO sample prepared through the assistance of carbon dioxides has spherical particle morphology, while sample (TP-LMNCO) without carbon dioxides assistance shows large nanoparticles agglomeration. The CP-LMNCO electrode demonstrates superior electrochemical performance, which exhibits capacity retention of 97.76% after 100 cycles compared with only 81.94% for TP-LMNCO electrode at 1C (250mAg−1). Even at a higher current density (5C), the CP-LMNCO electrode shows reversible capacity up to 105.4mA h g−1. The remarkably improved electrochemical performance of CP-LMNCO electrode is ascribed to spherical morphology with small surface area which decreases side reactions with electrolyte during cycling and smaller primary sizes which reduce lithium ion (Li+) diffusion distance. Furthermore, the synthesis of spherical materials using metal sulfate with high concentration (up to 5M) as starting agents are attempted under carbon dioxides assisted conditions, and as-prepared materials also show improved performance.

Abstract:Layered Li[Li0.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co0.08]O-2 cathode materials were synthesized via a solid-state reaction for Li-ion batteries, in which lithium hydroxide monohydrate, manganese dioxide, nickel monoxide, and cobalt monoxide were employed as metal precursors. To uncover the relationship between the structure and electrochemical properties of the materials, synthesis conditions such as calcination temperature and time as well as quenching methods were investigated. For the synthesized Li[Li0.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co0.08]O-2 materials, the metal components were found to be in the form of Mn4+, Ni2+, and Co3+, and their molar ratio was in good agreement with stoichiometric ratio of 0.56:0.16:0.08. Among them, the one synthesized at 800 degrees C for 12 h and subsequently quenched in air showed the best electrochemical performances, which had an initial discharge specific capacity and coulombic efficiency of 265.6 mAh/g and 84.0%, respectively, and when cycled at 0.5, 1, and 2 C, the corresponding discharge specific capacities were 237.3, 212.6, and 178.6 mAh/g, respectively. After recovered to 0.1 C rate, the discharge specific capacity became 259.5 mAh/g and the capacity loss was only 2.3% of the initial value at 0.1 C. This work suggests that the solid-state synthesis route is easy for preparing high performance Li[Li0.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co0.08]O-2 cathode materials for Li-ion batteries. Abstract:LiNi0.45CO0.10Mn0.45O2 was prepared from Li2CO3 and a triple oxide of nickel, cobalt and manganese at 950 degrees C in air. The structure and characteristics of LiNi0.45CO0.10Mn0.45O2 were determined by XRD, SEM and electrochemical measurements. The compound LiNi0.45CO0.10Mn0.45O2 has layered structure with hexagonal lattice. The individual particles are agglomeration of many little primary particles whose size ranges from 100 mm to 200 nm. The LiNi0.41CO0.10Mn0.45O2 cathode has excellent electrochemical performances with large reversible specific capacity of 142.5 mA(center dot)h/g between 4.25 V, and good capacity retention of 83.20% after 450 charge/discharge cycles. Capacity of the battery increases with enhancement of charge voltage limit, and a specific discharge capacity of 175.2 mA center dot h/g is obtained when the charge voltage limit is fixed at 4.45 V.

Abstract:LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 microspheres have been successfully synthesized via a facile in situ route with MnO2 as the sacrificial template. The as-obtained sample shows a unique nano/micro-hierarchical structure. As a cathode material for lithium-ion battery, the sample exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with higher capacity, superior cycling stability and rate capability as compared with that prepared by conventional co-precipitate reaction method. The discharge specific capacities for the first cycle are 196, 187, 182 and 176 mA h g (1) at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1 C, respectively. The superior performance can be ascribed to the unique microstructure with numerous nanosized primary particles that can provide rapid pathway for Li+ and e diffusion, and facilitate the penetration of the electrolyte. Abstract:Hierarchical porous three-dimensional MnCo2O4 nanowire bundles were obtained by a universal and low-cost hydrothermal method, which subsequently act as a carbon-free and binder-free cathode for Li-O-2 cell applications. This system showed a high discharge capacity of up to 12919 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 mA cm(-2) and excellent rate capability. Under constrained specific capacities of 500 and 1000 mAh g(-1), Li-O-2 batteries could be successfully operated for over 300 and 144 cycles, respectively. Moreover, their charge voltage was markedly decreased to about 3.5 V. Their excellent electrochemical performance is proposed to be related to the conductivity enhancements resulting from the hierarchical interconnected mesoporous/macroporous weblike structure of the hybrid MnCo2O4 cathode, which facilitated the electron and mass transport. More importantly, after 2 months of cycling, the microstructure of the cathode was maintained and a recyclability of over 200 cycles of the reassembled Li-O-2 cells was achieved. The effects of the level of electrolyte and corrosion of the lithium anode during long-term cycling on the electrochemical property of Li-O-2 cells have been explored. Furthermore, the nucleation process of the discharge product morphology has been investigated.

Abstract:Although very appealing in developing hollow structured lithium-rich layered transition-metal oxides as cathodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), a great challenge lies in controlling the growth of transition metal elements with desired molar ratios while maintaining intact hollow structures during synthesis. Herein, we propose a scalable strategy to successfully synthesize novel lamellar Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 hollow (L-LMOH) nanosphere cathode for advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). It is proved that the employment of sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) gel nanospheres as the template plays a key role in the formation of flower-like SPS@ Ni-Co-Mn-precursor nanospheres with desired molar ratios, and a subsequently delicate control in the heating rate leads to the intact L-LMOH nanospheres. It is demonstrated that the use of L-LMOH nanosphere cathode not only delivers outstanding reversible discharge capacities of 281.7 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 20 mA g(-1) and 136.6 mAh g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1), but also possess superior cycling stability with a capacity reservation of 80% at 2000 mA g(-1) after 200 continuous cycles. It is well analyzed that the ingenious design of both unique lamella and hollow architectures synergistically benefits the significantly enhanced rate capability and cycling stability. Abstract:In this work, ZnMn2O4 anode material with excellent lithium storage performance is prepared by combining the carbon gel–combustion method and the hard template strategy (a polypropylene membrane with high porosity). The as–obtained ZnMn2O4 sample has a hollow panpipe–like structure with rich pore characteristics. The phase composition, micro–nano structure, crystallinity, pore size distribution, specific surface area, element distribution and valence state of the samples are systematically tested and analyzed by XRD, ICP–AES, FESEM, TEM, HRTEM, N2 adsorption/desorption measurement and XPS. When assembled into a half–cell with metallic lithium as the counter electrode, the ZnMn2O4 electrode material exhibits higher reversible capacity (under low and high current densities), excellent cycle stability and rate capability with better dynamic properties compared with the ZnMn2O4 sample obtained without using the organic template agent. Porous structure characteristics, small particle size, high specific surface area, high crystallinity and special micro–nano structure help to effectively improve the kinetic properties and structural stability of the electrode material during charge/discharge processes for achieving high energy and power densities.

Solid-state Synthesis of Li[Li0.2Mn.56Ni0.6Co0.08]O2 Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Layered Li|Li0.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co(0.08]O2 cathode materials were synthesized via a solid-state reaction for Liion batteries,in which lithium hydroxide monohydrate,manganese dioxide,nickel monoxide,and cobalt monoxide were employed as metal precursors.To uncover the relationship between the structure and electrochemical properties of the materials,synthesis conditions such as calcination temperature and time as well as quenching methods were investigated.For the synthesized Li[Li0.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co0.08]O2materials,the metal components were found to be in the form of Mn4+,Ni2+,and Co3+,and their molar ratio was in good agreement with stoichiometric ratio of 0.56:0.16:0.08.Among them,the one synthesized at 800 C for 12 h and subsequently quenched in air showed the best electrochemical performances,which had an initial discharge specific capacity and coulombic efficiency of 265.6 mAh/g and 84.0%,respectively,and when cycled at 0.5,1,and 2C,the corresponding discharge specific capacities were 237.3,212.6.and 178.6 mAh/g,respectively.After recovered to 0.1 C rate,the discharge specific capacity became259.5 mAh/g and the capacity loss was only 2.3% of the initial value at 0.1 C.This work suggests that the solid-state synthesis route is easy for preparing high performance Li[Li0.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co0.08]O2 cathode materials for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:High energy consumption and excess lithium are required for the preparation of transition metal layered oxide cathodes through high-temperature solid-phase sintering. Exploring new low-cost preparation methods can raise the cost competitiveness of commercial lithium-ion batteries. Herein, nanoscale LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2(NCM111) was prepared via a hydrothermal lithiation process from transition metal sulfates. The dissolution-recrystallization mechanism during the low-temperature hydrothermal process enables the formation of nanoparticles. The nanoscale particle size shortens the diffusion channel of lithium ions, which can significantly boost the rate-performance of NCM111. The high concentration of Li+in the solution hinders Ni2+from occupying the 3a site of Li+during the formation of the layered structure, inhibiting the cation mixing, and the unreacted lithium in the solution can be easily recycled. The conductivity of the material is improved by introducing the high valence ion W6+, while the strong W–O bond stabilizes the layered structure and further restrains cation mixing. The results show that the W-doped NCM111 has a specific capacity of 131.9 mAh g−1at an ultra-high discharge rate of 20 C (3200 mA g−1).
