Abstract:We design a tunable slow-light delay line based on fiber-optic parametric process by shaping the gain bandwidth, with its operating wavelength in the present telecommunication window. We derive an analytical expression for the time delay and perform simulations for the delay lines made of dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) and nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber, respectively. We also experimentally demonstrate the system performance of slow light by propagating 10-Gb/s return-to-zero data packets through such a tunable delay line based on DSF.
SBS based Slow Light Performance Comparison of 10 Gb

Abstract:We have demonstrated error-free operations of slow-light via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fiber for 10-Gb/s signals with different modulation formats, including non-return-to-zero (NRZ), phase-shaped binary transmission (PSBT) and differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK). By directly modulating the pump laser diode (LD) using current noise source, the SBS gain bandwidth and profile can be simply controlled by the peak-to-peak value and power density distribution of the current noise. Super-Gaussian noise modulation of the Brillouin pump LD allows a flat-top and sharp-edge SBS gain spectrum, which can reduce slow-light induced distortion in case of 10-Gb/s NRZ and PSBT signals. For the 10-Gb/s NRZ signal, the error-free slow-light operation has been achieved for the fist time and the corresponding maximal delay-time with error-free operation is 35 ps. Then we propose the PSBT format to minimize distortions resulting from SBS filtering effect and dispersion accompanied with slow light owing to its high spectral efficiency and strong dispersion tolerance. The maximal delay of 51 ps with error-free operation has been achieved. Furthermore, the DPSK format is directly demodulated through a Gaussian-shaped SBS gain, which is achieved using Gaussian-noise modulation of the Brillouin pump. The maximal error-free time delay after demodulation of a 10-Gb/s DPSK signal is as high as 81.5 ps, which is the best demonstrated result for 10-Gb/s slow-light.

Abstract:Slow light, referring to slowing down the propagation velocity of the light through engineering the material dispersion or waveguide dispersion of the medium, is a promising technology for optical buffering and packet synchronization in future all-optical communication networks. Recently, slow light in fibers are rapidly developing for their compatibility with fiber-optic communication systems, where the fiber nonlinearities such as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), stimulated Raman scattering (SBS) and parametric process are used to shape the material dispersion of the fiber so as to realize the slow light based on the well-known Kramers-Kronig relationship. What s more, for being compatible with the present 10-Gb/s optical communication systems, the system performances of 10-Gb/s signals delayed in the fiber nonlinearities based slow light should be thoroughly evaluated. In this thesis, we utilize the narrow band parametric process and broadband SBS in fiber to realize the tunable delay of 10-Gb/s signals. Abstract:Development of Data Center based computing technology require energy efficient high-speed transmission links. This leads to optical amplification-free intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) systems with low complexity equalization compliant with IEEE standardized electrical interfaces. Switching from on-off keying to multi-level pulse amplitude modulation would allow to reduce lane count for next generation Ethernet interfaces. We characterize 106.25 Gbaud on-off keying, 4-level and 6-level pulse amplitude modulation links using two integrated transmitters: O-band directly modulated laser and C-band externally modulated laser. Simple feed forward or decision feedback equalizer is used. We demonstrate 106.25 Gbaud on-off keying links operating without forward error correction for both transmitters. We also show 106.25 Gbaud 4-level and 6-level pulse amplitude modulation links with performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error threshold of 4.5 x 10(-3). Furthermore, for EML-based transmitter we achieve 106.25 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation performance below KP-FEC threshold of 2.2 x 10(-4). That shows that we can use optics to support (2x)100 Gbps Ethernet on single lambda at expense of simple forward error correction.

Abstract:We demonstrate a record 310/256 Gbaud OOK, 197/145 Gbaud PAM4, and 160/116 Gbaud PAM6 EML/DML-based IM/DD links without any optical amplification with performance below the 6.25% overhead HD-FEC threshold after 100-m/6-km SMF, respectively.

Abstract:Slow light due to stimulated Brillouin scattering in fibers is a promising technique to realize all-optical data storage and synchronization. For delaying high-speed data, we demonstrate an approach to solve the problem of narrowband Brillouin gain by phase-modulating the Brillouin pump. The bit rate of the phase-modulating signal determines the Brillouin gain bandwidth. A 1.25-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero pseudorandom binary sequence data is delayed by 520 ps with a phase-modulated pump operating at 2.5-Gb/s bit rate. We have also observed the pattern-dependent delay and distortion of the data caused by the filtering characteristics of Brillouin amplification, and we have suppressed the distortion by detuning the carrier of the signal away from the Brillouin gain peak.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate optically tunable buffer in a nano-scale silicon microring resonator with a 20-mu m radius. The delay-tuning mechanism is based on the red shift of the resonance induced by the thermal nonlinear effect. Abstract:We demonstrate a 5-GHz-broadband tunable slow-light device based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in a standard highly-nonlinear optical fiber pumped by a noise-current-modulated laser beam. The noise modulation waveform uses an optimized pseudo-random distribution of the laser drive voltage to obtain an optimal flat-topped gain profile, which minimizes the pulse distortion and maximizes pulse delay for a given pump power. Eye-diagram and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis show that this new broadband slow-light technique significantly increases the fidelity of a delayed data sequence, while maintaining the delay performance. A fractional delay of 0.81 with a SNR of 5.2 is achieved at the pump power of 350 mW using a 2-km-long highly nonlinear fiber with the fast noise-modulation method, demonstrating a 50% increase in eye-opening and a 36% increase in SNR compared to a previous slow-modulation method.

Abstract:Tunable stimulated-Brillouin-scattering (SBS)-based slow-light in optical fibers has potential applications in optical buffering in the future all-optical router commutation systems. However, due to the low SBS threshold and relatively high realistic signal power, the gain in the usual SBS systems is limited at ∼30 dB. This paper presents a high-gain SBS scheme to realize large delay slow-light, which benefits from avoiding the depletion of the pump power in a short fiber as SBS media. The experiment demonstrates that, up to 50 dB non-saturated gain has been observed in the single-stage 591.8 m fiber SBS amplification. The slow-light delay can be obtained 52 ns, and the fractional delay can exceed 1.

Abstract:A long optically controlled delay line enhanced by ring configuration is demonstrated by using the group-velocity control of signal pulses based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. In experiment, two optical fibre ring cavities are used: one is used as the Brillouin laser, providing single-mode Stokes wave as probe wave; the other is used as the Brillouin amplifier, working as slow light medium. We achieve a maximum time delay of 215 ns using the ring Brillouin amplifier, five times larger than the input probe pulse width of 40 ns. In the meantime, a considerable pulse broadening is observed, which agrees well with the theoretical prediction based on linear theory.

Abstract:We present a method to achieve flat-top gain spectrum through overlapping multiple gain lines, which can be used to increase slow light bandwidth and relative pulse delay. A tunable gain bandwidth can be realized by changing the number of spectral lines and frequency separation between adjacent spectral lines. We demonstrate the method in a SBS-based slow light system. A phase modulator is used to modulate the phase of the pump wave, generating a pump wave with multi-line spectrum and achieving a Brillouin gain bandwidth of ~ 330 MHz.

Abstract:Based on the solution of the density matrix of motion equations we gave a theoretical simulation and experimental measurement of reduction of light propagation for a doped Er+ fiber by population oscillation. The effects of the concentration of doped Er ion density and fiber length were given in the paper. The measured data was agree with theoretical simulation well. Maximum delay is 10.75ms. The delay is tunable by changing modulation frequency and laser input power. The result showed the delay based on slow light in fiber can be proposed a novel optical delay line.

Abstract:We investigate slow-light via stimulated Brillouin scattering in a room temperature optical fiber that is pumped by a spectrally broadened laser. Broadening the spectrum of the pump field increases the linewidth $\Delta\omega_p$ of the Stokes amplifying resonance, thereby increasing the slow-light bandwidth. One physical bandwidth limitation occurs when the linewidth becomes several times larger than the Brillouin frequency shift $\Omega_B$ so that the anti-Stokes absorbing resonance cancels out substantially the Stokes amplifying resonance and hence the slow-light effect. We find that partial overlap of the Stokes and anti-Stokes resonances can actually lead to an enhancement of the slow-light delay - bandwidth product when $\Delta\omega_p \simeq 1.3 \Omega_B$. Using this general approach, we increase the Brillouin slow-light bandwidth to over 12 GHz from its nominal linewidth of $\sim$30 MHz obtained for monochromatic pumping. We controllably delay 75-ps-long pulses by up to 47 ps and study the data pattern dependence of the broadband SBS slow-light system.
