Abstract:Using a simple method, we developed a new family of alkyl sulfonic acid modified lignosulfonate (ASLSs) with simultaneously improved sulfonation degrees and molecular weights via one step. Direct sulfonation occurred on both phenolic and alcoholic hydroxyl groups of alkali lignin raw material with 1,4-butylenesulfone used as sulfonation agent. A sulfonation degree of 3.86 mmol/g had been achieved which presents as one of the highest sulfonation degrees among those of reported LSs, to date. H-1-NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements confirmed the efficient sulfonation. Furthermore, the dispersion properties were investigated in low-rank coal-water slurry (CWS). ASLS3 showed better viscosity-reduction effect than naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensate (FDN) in CWS with dosages from 0.6% to 1.0 wt%. ASLS3 had the similar sulfonation degree with FDN; however, the large steric hindrance, soft long alkyl chain-C4H8-SO3H, and their efficient anchoring effect of ASLSs contributed to their improved dispersion properties.
A Novel and Highly Efficient Polymerization of Sulfomethylated Alkaline Lignins Via Alkyl Chain Cross-Linking Method

Abstract:A new family of water-soluble lignosulfonate polymers with ultrahigh molecular weight (Mw) was developed based on alkali lignin (AL) as starting material in a one-pot reaction in two steps: sulfomethylation of AL as raw material led to AL-S and this material was subsequently cross-linked via alkylation with 1,6-dibromohexane (alkAL-S). Gel permeation chromatography showed a significant increase of Mw from 5200 Da of AL-S to 201 000 Da of alkAL-S with high degree of alkylation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and functional group analysis confirmed the efficient polymerization by a nucleophilic substitution reaction mechanism. Additionally, alkAL-S with high Mw showed unexpected viscosity-reducing effect, stability and good rheological properties on a low-rank coal-water slurry (CWS), which are even better than those obtained by naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde (NSF) as additive. The adsorption properties of the new products were also characterized via a quartz crystal microbalance combined with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D method). Cross-linked structure, large steric hindrance from high Mw and suitable amphiphilic properties of alkAL-S polymers contribute together to the highly improved dispersion performances for CWS.

Abstract:In this work, a novel amphoteric copolymer named Poly(sodium p-styrenesulfonate– co -acrylic acid- co -diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC)) was synthesized via free radical polymerization. Afterwards, P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC) was explored for use as a dispersant in coal water slurry (CWS) preparation. The structure of P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC) was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. The synthetic conditions were optimized as the feed ratio of AA to SS was 1 : 1 (for Yulin coal) or 1.5 : 1 (for Yili coal), and DMDAAC dosage was 4.0 wt% (for Yulin coal) and 6.0 wt% (for Yili coal) toward total monomers. The performances of P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC) as a dispersant for CWS were evaluated by various technologies, such as apparent viscosity, zeta potential, static stability and contact angle measurements. The results revealed that the optimized dosage of P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC) in CWS preparation was 0.3 and 0.4 wt% for Yulin coal and Yili coal respectively. In this optimum condition, CWS prepared using P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC) as dispersant showed a typical shear thinning behaviour and excellent stability, which are desired in industries. The rheological models also confirmed the pseudo-plastic characteristics of CWS. Finally, compared with the widely used anionic dispersant naphthalene sulphonate formaldehyde condensate (NSF) and poly(sodium p-styrenesulfonate) (PSS), P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC) developed in this work exhibited better slurry making performance. The introduction of cationic functional groups promoted the adsorption of the dispersant, which further enhanced the electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance among coal particles. Accordingly, the viscosity of CWS decreased and static stability enhanced.

Abstract:The development and application of high-efficiency coal-water slurry (CWS) dispersants can foster the clean utilization of natural coal. CWS with excellent flowability and stability requires good adsorption capacity of dispersant on pulverized coal surface, which is influenced substantially by the architecture and hydrophilicity of dispersants molecule. In this study, a series of neutralized sulfonated poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) (NSPSM) with different molecular weight (Mn) and sulfonation degree (SD) were synthesized by self-stabilized precipitation polymerization (2SP), gas-solid heterogeneous sulfonation reaction (GSR) and neutralization reaction with NaOH. The performance of NSPSM for CWS, and their dispersion and stabilization mechanisms were investigated in detail. Under optimized conditions, maximum slurry concentration (MSC) and water separation ratio (WSR) of slurry with NSPSM could reach 66.5% and 2.0%, respectively, which are superior to commercial naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensate (NSF) dispersant. The outstanding dispersibility of NSPSM was ascribed to its improved adsorption capacity due to increased charge density along polymer chain, which can prevent agglomeration among coal particles through electrostatic repulsion.

Abstract:The three-dimensional molecular structure of GSAL with long side chains well improves the hydrophily and electronegativity interaction (mainly is π–πconjugated adsorption) with coal surface and increases the adsorption capacity on coal surface. The steric hindrance effect of GSAL with higher molecular weight and longer hydrophilic side chains results in a rather thicker adsorbed film, and the adsorption behavior can help to decrease the solid liquid interfacial free energy so as to improve the wettability to coal particle. FDN adsorbs on coal particle by the lying form mainly by means of the electrostatic interactions between the sulfonic groups of FDN and the coal surface, the thickness of adsorbed film is thinner, that is difficult to form larger steric hindrance despite FDN has more adsorption mass.

Abstract:Dispersants in coal water slurry have received considerable attention over the years with regards to their use in enhancing the properties of CWS. This paper focuses on the preparation of the low-cost, high-performance CWS dispersant. The novel concentrated coal water slurry dispersant was prepared by reacting the sulfomethylated alkali lignin with sulphonated acetone-formaldehyde polycondensate, and the effect of various factors on the dispersion ability was investigated. The results showed that when the H2O2 dosage was 5g, when the molar ratio of CH2O to Na2SO3 was 3.4, and when the Na2SO3 dosage was 40%, the apparent viscosity of CWS could reach 1074 mPa.s.

Abstract:This work reports the synthesis and performance of a novel dispersant for coal water slurry (CWS). The dispersant is derived from humic acid (HA) and has a topological structure, named humic acid-graft-poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (HA-g-PSSNa). A series of HA-g-PSSNa with simultaneous presence of hydrophobic humic acid skeleton and hydrophilic poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) side chains were synthesized via surface acylation reaction of HA and followed by atom transfer radical polymerization. The structure and chemical composition of HA-g-PSSNa were verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy observation suggests that the incorporation of PSSNa segments onto HA skeleton remarkably affects its morphology. The performances of CWS prepared using HA-g-PSSNa, PSSNa, and naphthalene sulfonic formaldehyde condensate (NSF) as dispersants were studied and systematically compared using various technologies. The results show that the slurry-making performance of HA-g-PSSNa enhanced with the increase in the length of PSSNa side chains. In the case of HA-g-PSSNa with appropriate PSSNa chain length, the CWS prepared using HA-g-PSSNa as dispersant exhibits excellent apparent viscosity as well as static stability, even superior to those of PSSNa and NSF. The dispersing and stabilizing mechanism of HA-g-PSSNa is proposed as follows: When used as a dispersant for CWS, HA skeleton provides sufficient hydrophobic interaction to coal surface and drives the adsorption of HA-g-PSSNa molecules. Hydrophilic PSSNa side chains are oriented to water, thus forming a dense electrical layer and steric hindrance surrounding the coal particles. Accordingly, the aggregation of coal particles was suppressed.

Abstract:Four purified sodium lignosulfonate (SL) samples with different molecular weights were prepared by fractionation using ultrafiltration. The effect of the molecular weights of SL on the apparent viscosity of coal-water slurry (CWS) was investigated by studying the adsorption amounts and the zeta potentials in the coal-water interface. The results show that the adsorption behavior of the dispersants in the coal-water interface is the key factor to affect the dispersing effect, that the higher adsorption amount and compact adsorption film help reduce the viscosity reduction of CWS, and that the zeta potential is also an important factor influenced by the sulfonic group and carboxy contents of the lignosulfonate molecule. Furthermore, SL with a molecular weight ranging from 10000 to 50000 has both a higher adsorbed amount and zeta potential on the coal surface and the best effect on reducing the viscosity of the coal-water slurry.

Abstract:By sulfonation and fasculation reaction,sodium lignin sulfonate was modified as a dispersant(GCL3S) of coal water slurry(CWS).The molecular structure of the dispersant was studied and the molecular weight and the degree of sulfonation were found to be the key factors affecting its capability for reducing the viscosity of CWS,especially the molecular weight.Comparing with other dispersants of CWS showed that GCL3S has much better dispersing effect than nathphalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensate.The suitable molecular weight(the inherent viscosity is 6.84 mL/g-12.21 mL/g) and the higher degree of sulfonation(1.89 mmol/g) are more effective for reducing the viscosity of CWS.The Haake rheometer was used to measure the rheological properties,and the shear-stress/shear rate data for each CWS prepared using GCL3S were fit to three-parameter Herschel-Bulkley model,and the effects of the molecular weight and the degree of sulfonation of GCL3S on rheological behavior of CWS were investigated.

Abstract:Compared with traditional approaches using synthetic amphiphilic block copolymers, alkyl chain cross-linked lignosulfonate (ASL) with high molecular weight (Mw) from black liquor was synthesized and characterized by GPC, functional group content, FTIR, and 1H-NMR measurement, and then used as water soluble amphiphilic biopolymer to prepare polymersomes via solution self-assembly. DLS illustrated the solution assembly behavior. The hollow nature of nanospheres was revealed by TEM. Moreover, the element analysis and XPS results revealed the hollow sphere structure with a hydrophilic core and a hydrophobic shell. It facilitated the efficient encapsulation of pesticide carbendazim into the hollow sphere via electrostatic interaction, which was investigated by SEM, TEM, elemental analysis and XPS. In our study, ASLs with different Mw from 20 kDa to 200 kDa all could exhibit the similar self-assembly behavior, which suggests that the hollow spheres and the encapsulation experiment were easily duplicated from ASL polymers without structure dependence. Furthermore, the dispersion properties of ASL in the carbendazim suspension concentrate (SC) system were also investigated, which showed that SC with ASL exhibited better dispersion property and rheological performance than that of NSF and commercial LS. Preparation and application of polymersomes via self-assembly from modified-lignin from black liquor provide a promising and effective scaffold which can be conveniently obtained from cheap and renewable bioresource. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A new type of graft copolymer, sulfonated humic acid-acrylic acid resin (SHA), was synthesized and developed as dispersant for highly-loaded coal water slurry (CWS) from Chinese Binchang coal. In this study, The formulation, stability and rheology of the slurry with SHA were investigated. The experimental results show that SHA can reduce effectively CWS viscosity at low dosage, and that the CWS with SHA has excellent stability within 48 h and exhibits shear-thinning apparent viscosity/shear rate behavior. Based on the above, SHA is a promising dispersant for highly-loaded CWS in the practical use in industry.
The performance and dispersing mechanism of anionic dispersants in slurries prepared by upgraded coal

Abstract:It remains a significant subject on preparing high concentrated coal water slurry (CWS) from low quality coals to address the raw material supply for slurry preparation. The performance and dispersing mechanism of anionic dispersants in slurries prepared by upgraded coal, which was refined from a low quality coal, had been investigated systematically. The rheological behaviors of CWS prepared with each dispersant, i.e. sodium lignosulfonate (SLF), naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde (NSF) and sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS), were studied at first; afterwards the governing factors on slurry concentration improvement and dispersion mechanism of coal particles modified by dispersant were investigated. The results illustrated that the maximum coal loading of CWS prepared with SLF, NSF and PSS were 67%, 70% and 68%, respectively, which suggested that the improvement of slurry concentration by each dispersant was NSF > PSS > SLF. According to the surface tension, yield stress and UV measurement, the effect of dispersants on slurry concentration improvement mainly relied on the adsorption by coal particles instead of surface tension reduction on solvent or its inherent steric hindrance. Subsequently, the contact angle and zeta potential analysis further indicated the excellent dispersing performance obtained by anionic dispersant was mainly attributed to the enhancement of zeta potential instead of wetting property on coal surface. The Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) calculations revealed that the electrostatic repulsion energy was improved significantly among coal particles after dispersant adsorption. A model on dispersion mechanism by anionic dispersants has been proposed. These results demonstrated that the promotion effect on slurry concentration by anionic dispersant in CWS was mainly attributed to enhancement on electrostatic repulsive force among upgraded coal particles.

Abstract:Due to SF coal has high content of moisture and oxygen-containing groups,so it's difficult to obtain high-concentration coal-water slurry.In this paper,we have studied the preparation process conditions of coal-water slurry has particle classification and dispersant compound etc.Research has demonstrated that when the ratio of particle classification 500 mesh,325 mesh and 200 mesh is 5∶1∶4,the ratio of dispersant of ethoxylated dodecylalcohol and sodium lignin sulfonate is 0.8∶0.8,the coal-water slurry has the lowest apparent viscosity for 1 020 mPa·s,the best stability of 15 d and the higher concentration of 62%.
Evaluation of Utilization Performance of Modified Wheat Straw Alkali Lignin As a Dispersant of Coal-Water Slurry

Abstract:By using sulfonation and copolymerization methods, the wheat straw alkali lignin was modified as a dispersant of coal water slurry (CWS). The molecular structure of the modified product was studied and the molecular weight and the sulfonic group content were found to be the key factors affecting its capability for reducing the viscosity of CWS. This copolymer product (MSL) has higher capability for reducing the viscosity of CWS when it has proper molecular weight (the mass average molecular weight is about 8000～9000) and higher sulfonic group content. Different fractions of the MSL were obtained by ultrafiltrating and used to prepare CWS. The results showed that the fractions with higher molecular weight are more effective for reducing the viscosity of CWS, but too high molecular weight leads to viscosity increase of CWS. Comparison with other dispersants of CWS showed that MSL has much better dispersing effect than lignosulphonate, and is similar to naphthalenesulfonate-formaldehyde condensate. Generally, MSL belongs to a new type of high performance lignin series dispersant of CWS.
Synthesis, adsorption and dispersion of a dispersant based on starch for coal-water slurry

Abstract:A comb-type molecular dispersant based on starch for coal–water slurry (CWS) was synthesized from the copolymerization of starch, acrylic acid and styrene (SAS). The structure of SAS was characterized via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Apparent viscosity and static stability of CWS were respectively measured by rheometer and water separating test. The interaction of the dispersant with coal particles was analyzed using zeta potential of CWS, contact angle of coal surface, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and adsorption isotherm of the dispersant on the interface of coal and water. The results show that the viscosity of CWS with 65.0wt% coal and 0.5wt% SAS dispersant is 862mPas under 100s−1. Besides, the reducing viscosity and static stability of CWS with SAS is better than commercial naphthalene sulfonate (NSA) and natural polymeric dispersant sodium lignosulfonate (MLS). On the surface of Binchang coal, the adsorption quantity of SAS is larger than that of NSA and MSL. The molecule of SAS dispersant has hydrophobic groups connecting to the surface of coal and hydrophilic groups connecting to water, which results in uniform dispersion of coal particles in water.

Abstract:The main purpose in this study was to understand the interactions of coal particles with three amphiphilic humic acid-based polymers, which were designed and synthesized through the copolymerization of humic acid (HA) with maleic anhydride-polyethylene glycol 400 monoester, methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride or both of them, respectively, abbreviated as HAM, HAD and HMD. The adsorption quantities of HMD and HAD increased monotonically with the equilibrium concentration of dispersant, which were well described by Freundlich adsorption equation, but the Langmuir adsorption equation was more suitable for HAD dispersant. Besides, the wettability of HMD solutions on the coal surface was better than others. Moreover, the HMD dispersant exhibited better viscosity-reducing and stabilizing capability for coal-water slurry (CWS) than that of HAD and HAM, which were due to the strong adsorption force that was good for improving the hydrophily and enhancing the steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsion among coal particles.

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of additive adsorption onto coal particles on surface properties, hydrophobic groups on the slurryability, and the moisture occurrence form on the performance of coal water slurry (CWS). Mechanisms related to the different hydrophobic structures of the additives are proposed. The adsorption method of sulfonated acetone formaldehyde enhances the adsorption capacity of coal surfaces but is not conducive to slurrying. Sodium lignin sulfonate has hydrophobic ends with nonpolar aromatic groups, three-dimensional macromolecular structures, and complex branched chains, which provide CWS with good stability and slurryability. Naphthalenesulfonate formaldehyde has a double benzene ring structure and provides the thick but nonuniform adsorption layers on coal surfaces. The many amorphous structures and low molecular weights of sodium humic sulfonate lead to nonuniform hydration films and poor slurryability. The results of this paper provide guidance for improving synergism in coal–water–additive systems and enhancing slurry performance.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
