Abstract:This paper presents a three-dimensional (3-D) target reconstruction characterized by its geometric components, i.e. canonical scattering objects. The target is decomposed into some primitive geometries, which are extracted to represent and characterize scattering features. The object parameters are estimated in the frequency domain based on the least square method, and all estimated objects uses the model-based reasoning rules to reconstruct 3-D target. The simulation of a simplified tank model is used to validate the feature extraction and target reconstruction.

Abstract:The integration of sensing and communication (ISAC) is an essential function of future wireless systems. Due to its large available bandwidth, millimeter-wave (mmWave) ISAC systems are able to achieve high sensing accuracy. In this paper, we consider the multiple base-station (BS) collaborative sensing problem in a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) mmWave communication system. Our aim is to sense a remote target shape with the collected signals which consist of both the reflection and scattering signals. We first characterize the mmWave's scattering and reflection effects based on the Lambertian scattering model. Then we apply the periodogram technique to obtain rough scattering point detection, and further incorporate the subspace method to achieve more precise scattering and reflection point detection. Based on these, a reconstruction algorithm based on Hough Transform and principal component analysis (PCA) is designed for a single convex polygon target scenario. To improve the accuracy and completeness of the reconstruction results, we propose a method to further fuse the scattering and reflection points. Extensive simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:Electromagnetic inverse scattering problem (ISP) refers to using the measured field data to reconstruct the physical and geometric properties of the scattering target in the detection area. The ISP is inherently nonlinear, ill-conditioned and noise-afflicted. Traditional iterative optimization methods are unstable, time-consuming, inaccurate, and can easily get trapped in local optimums, making it difficult to achieve high-performance real-time imaging. Recently, the diffusion model in deep learning has become a leading solution in the field of image generation, demonstrating exceptional robustness and immunity to noise. In this paper, we use diffusion model and employ 2D panoramic image as a guiding tool for the 3D model reconstruction of electromagnetic scattering to tackle the aforementioned challenges in ISP. It is an innovative attempt to solve the ISP by using the diffusion model, and it has been well verified in the experimental results.

Abstract:Electromagnetic (EM) scattering characteristics of perfectly electrical conducting (PEC) targets in the terahertz (THz) frequency range are investigated through the use of ray-based high-frequency EM techniques. These techniques include the methods of shooting and bouncing rays (SBR), and the truncated-wedge incremental-length diffraction coefficients (TW-ILDCs). The EM fields associated with each ray are tracked and computed, based on the principle of Physical Optics (PO) and/or Geometrical Optics (GO). The total field scattered from the PEC target is then obtained by summing up the EM contributions of each ray and each illuminated edge. In contrast to previously reported applications, these methods are combined together to solve three-dimensional (3D) scattering problems in the THz region. Due to the use of analytical formulas of Physical Optics and the truncated-wedge incremental-length diffraction coefficients method, the consideration of the multi-reflection effect in shooting and bouncing rays, and partially accounting for the second-order edge-diffraction effects in the truncated-wedge incremental-length diffraction coefficients method, we obtain an extremely efficient algorithm for studying THz scattering. It has excellent agreement with an accurate integral solver, the Multilevel Fast Multipole Algorithm (MLFMA), which cannot be used in handling large-scale THz problems. Both mono- and bistatic radar cross sections (RCS) of several PEC objects in the THz band are given to show the correctness and reliability of the asymptotic methods. The EM scattering characteristics of such targets in the THz region are analyzed. Great differences of the target characteristics between the THz and GHz regimes are observed and discussed.

Abstract:Numerical simulations of polarized scattering, 3-D imaging, and profile reconstruction of a complex-shaped electric-large target above a rough surface are developed. The bidirectional analytic ray tracing method is first applied to calculation of polarized scattering from volumetric target and underlying surface. By using the step-frequency radar working in downward-looking spotlight mode and moving within a 2-D circular arc aperture, a 3-D matrix of backscattering fields in both the amplitude and phase is obtained. The 3-D fast Fourier transform algorithm is adopted for uniformly resampling data, which are acquired by interpolating the collected uniformly sampling backscattering fields to quickly form a focused image. Automatic reconstruction of the target is then well demonstrated. As validation and comparison, the scattering fields are also computed and compared using widely accepted software FEKO based on physical optics. The technique of imaging and reconstruction for a 3-D complex-shaped perfect electric conductor electric-large target, such as a tank-like object, is presented.
Non-parametric Bayesian Learning for Geometric Reconstruction of Scattering Primitives from Multi-Dimensional SAR Images

Abstract:Target geometrical reconstruction from multi-dimensional SAR(synthetic aperture radar) images is very important for target recognition and scene understanding. This paper proposes a novel geometric reconstruction method for man-made targets based on scattering primitives, e.g., plate, cylinder, dihedral, trihedral and so on. Non-parametric Bayesian learning is employed to optimize the scatterer parameters into an integral computation. The Bayesian learning can extract scattering primitives of targets via a reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo strategy. Experimental results of two models demonstrate good feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this study, a composite scattering model of the vegetated ground with a target is developed. In the composite scattering model, a Facet-based Modified Two-scale Model (FMTSM), combining the advantages of Kirchhoff Approximate (KA) and Integral Equation Model (IEM), is established to calculate the electromagnetic (EM) scattering of the rough ground, which can enhance precision and extend application range comparing with the traditional TSM. Based on the FMTSM and Vector Radiative Transfer Theory (VRT), an improved two-layered vegetation model is developed to deal with the EM scattering of vegetated ground. Besides, two typical scattering problems, including the rough ground and vegetated ground, are performed to prove the validity of FMTSM and FMTSM-VRT methods. Simulation results agree well with the measured value. Finally, the composite scattering model of the vegetated ground with a target is proposed by combing the FMTSM-VRT method with Shooting and Bouncing Ray (SBR) algorithm. Meanwhile, the composite scattering characteristics of the vegetated ground with a missile are explored.

Abstract:For fast solving the electromagnetic scattering of multiple moving targets above or on a rough surface, the multi-dynamic-octrees-based shooting and bouncing ray (SBR) algorithm is proposed in the article. First, a local coordinate system (LCS) for each object is established that moves with targets in the geodetic coordinate system (GCS). The dynamic octree structure based on LCS is applied to keep the affiliation between facets and leaf nodes unchanged during target motion, which omits the reconstruction of the octree. Second, the emission plane determined by the incident direction is used for object projection. The scan line algorithm is improved and utilized to accelerate the elimination of shadows. Moreover, the ray-marching technique is employed to reduce the traversal of octree nodes for the high-order ray tracing on each object. For the ray tracing between different objects, the ray information is converted by the transformation matrix. Third, the scattering fields from targets and the surface (including the couple scattering between each other) are computed in LCS according to the illuminated facets. Then, the scattering fields are transformed to GCS, and the phase change caused by target movement is compensated. Finally, the total scattering of the composite model is acquired. Numerical results show the scattering of stationary and moving targets above/on the surface. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are verified by comparing it with the multilevel fast multipole method (MLFMM) in FEKO and the traditional SBR method. Moreover, the electromagnetic scattering of multiple moving targets on the rough surface under different parameters is analyzed.

Abstract:A forward parametric modeling method is proposed to establish 3-D attributed scattering center (ASC) models for dynamic group targets. The main steps include computer-aided design (CAD) model component decomposition, occlusion analysis for group targets, selection of scattering sources, extracting scattering center parameters, and establishing ASC models for dynamic group targets. With the modeling method, the specular reflection scattering centers, multiple reflections scattering centers, and edge scattering centers can be automatically extracted from CAD model accurately. The method establishes the ASC model with 3-D length parameters to analyze the ASC distributions from a general case. To improve the efficiency of the modeling method, an improved octree structures based occlusion analysis method is proposed to reduce the times of occlusion judgments between targets. Based on the 3-D ASC model, an establishment method is proposed to analyze the time-varying scattering features for dynamic group targets. The establishment method analyzes the correlation of ASC parameters in the time domain and constructs ASC dataset to efficiently establish the time-varying ASC model. Finally, the results of simulation and measurement are analyzed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This article proposes a forward method to establish the bistatic attributed scattering center (BASC) model for general complex targets. The BASC models constructed forward are exactly what downstream users expect, being able to accurately and concisely describe the bistatic scattering characteristics of complex targets, while also providing the clarity on physical formation process and carrying detailed target information. We first use a spatial ray clustering technique to effectively separate the bistatic scattering sources at component level. Then, we establish the parametric attributed model for bistatic scattering center, based on the quantitative forward analysis and derivation of electromagnetic-wave–target interaction process. The 3-D position is calculated according to the uniqueness, determinism, and the principle of equal optical path. From physical causes and conditions, the distribution length of BASC is given directly. The frequency dependence is rapidly determined by characterizing the distribution of specular points, thereby avoiding the burden of surface fitting for complex shapes. Finally, as the accuracy test of the proposed method, the model-predicted responses are shown to agree with the results obtained from validated high-frequency simulations. In addition, the characteristic differences in bistatic scattering centers detected from the multiple receive platforms in different directions are discussed.

A Primitive Scatterer Dictionary for Semantic Representation of Radar Target Images

Abstract:High-resolution radar images convey rich information about targets and their geometric characteristics. It remains a challenge in extracting the semantic information of target geometry from the speckle-like radar images. We argue that semantic-centric scattering modeling is crucial in this regard. This paper proposes to establish a primitive scatterer dictionary following the criteria of atomicity, completeness, extensibility and pixel-wise independence. By sorting out the geometric structure of the smallest atomic geometric unit in common high frequency approximation methods, the proposed scatterer dictionary is consisted of primitive 0D point, 1D line, and 2D surface scatterers, being either straight or curved. A unified bidirectional scattering distribution function (BSDF) is derived to analytically model the multi-dimensional scattering dependences on target attributes and position parameters, and sensor observation configurations. It is further extended to model most typical double and triple scattering structures. The efficacy and applicability of primitive scatterer dictionary are demonstrated by comparing it to numerical methods on various cases including the commonly seen attributed scattering center (ASC) models.

Abstract:In this paper, a fast Cross Coupling iterative Approach (CCIA) is proposed for studying the composite scattering of the layered rough surfaces with buried target, which uses forward backward method (FBM) to solve the electric field integral equations (EFIE) of the layered rough surface and bi-conjugate gradient method (BI-CG) to solve the EFIE of the target, and the interaction between the rough surface and the target is achieved by updating the excitation term. The algorithm is applied to calculate the composite scattering coefficients of the rough surface with a buried target, the results match with those of the traditional numerical algorithm MOM while the error can be reduced to 10−3 by 6 iterations, and the convergence speed and calculation accuracy meet the requirements. The composite scattering coefficients and Angular Correlation Function (ACF) amplitudes of layered rough surface and dielectric targets with different conditions are calculated, and the effects of various factors such as target size and burial depth on the composite scattering characteristics are discussed. It is found that the buried targets will have a great influence on the scattering characteristics, weakening or neglecting the coupling between them will lead to larger errors. Moreover, the results show that ACF can suppress scattering from rough surfaces well, making the scattering characteristics of the target more obvious, which is important for detecting underground targets.

Review of High-frequency Scattering Model of Canonical Geometric Primitives

Abstract:High-resolution SAR images contain rich information about targets and their surroundings, but the complex electromagnetic scattering mechanism makes intuitive interpretation difficult, leading to an important research topic in SAR image interpretation. This paper summarizes the typical geometric primitives modeling method of high-frequency scattering, which is reviewed in detail with respect to surface, wedge, and vertex scatterings. Besides the classical expressions of these typical scattering mechanisms, some simulation results are presented. The difficulties in characterizing typical scattering mechanisms and key scientific problems applied to SAR image interpretation are analyzed. Furthermore, this paper proposes a complete and extensive scattering characteristic characterization system by combining and interacting with the scattering primitives based on the corresponding geometric primitives. Finally, the feasibility of developing a scattering mechanism dictionary for use in interpreting SAR image scattering information is discussed.

Abstract:The study of electromagnetic scattering by complicated targets is a key technique in the military electronic field,which has found wide applications in radar,missile guidance,and target identification,etc.The Agilent Advanced Design System(ADS) and the Agilent measurement devices provide a robust and unique software-hardware design platform for the applications of the electromagnetic scattering.In this paper,we first make a brief review on the efficient methods for the study of electromagnetic scattering by complicated targets based on the full-wave numerical techniques and high-frequency approaches,and the relevant military softwares.Then we introduce two softwares that we developed:the Fast and Accurate Simulation Tools for Electromagnetics (FASTEM) based on the method of moments and the multi-level fast multipole algorithm,and the high-frequency software.We emphasize the development of data base for radar echo models of complicated targets based on ADS,ADS-RTBS,and give examples.

Abstract:In this paper, the reconstruction of perfectly electric conductor (PEC) scatterers with transverse electric (TE) wave illumination is investigated using the continuous-type subspace-based optimization method (SOM). The PEC scatterers can be of arbitrary locations, shapes and quantities and no prior information about the scatterers is required in the reconstructions. Compared with the transverse magnetic (TM) counterpart, the TE case is not only mathematically more complex, but also numerically more demanding in the sense that the triangular basis is used to represent induced electric current. Moreover, under better mesh strategy and more strict objective function, numerical simulations for arbitrary PEC scatterers generate satisfactory results and are well robust against noise. The algorithm is also examined under the experimental scattering data and still obtains good reconstruction results.
Reconstruction of scattering fields using wave-mode coefficients for 2D conducting targets

Abstract:A new method for reconstruction of scattering characteristics using wave-mode coefficients for 2D conducting objects is proposed. The technique uses the circular cylinder as a reference, and the scattered fields of other 2D targets are expressed in the same form of superposition of a series of cylindrical wave-modes. The coefficients of the wave-modes are independent of frequency and can be extracted using backscattering data. The extracted coefficients are found to be a good representation of scattering characteristics, and its application to target identifications seems to be promising. © 2011 IEEE.
A Research on 3-D Point Clouds Reconstruction of SAR Images Driven by Electromagnetic Scattering Mechanisms

Abstract:3-D reconstruction of the ground target has great significance in automatic target monitoring, urban safety and other fields. Besides, it is a hot research topic in computer vision, photogrammetry and remote sensing. Unlike optical imaging, SAR imaging mechanisms are of great complexity, which brings many challenges for information extraction and interpretation of SAR images. Thus, the current 3-D reconstruction methods are not precious enough to recover the detailed outlines of the ground target and new precious methods need to be developed. In recent decades, the research on scattering modeling of targets has developed from attribute scattering center models to geometric scatterer parametric models, which greatly improves the target scattering feature extraction and provides a new idea for the 3-D target reconstruction. Combining the geometric scatterer parametric models with convolutional neural networks, this paper proposes a 3-D target reconstruction network of SAR images based on 3-D point clouds. Through a reconstruction experiment, the effectiveness of the algorithm is validated. The method to construct this network shows a new research exploration for target 3-D target reconstruction of SAR images, and provides a reference for 3-D target reconstruction.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors presented the near‐field scattering centre model with the dependence description of radar distance. The model can be used to quickly calculate the near‐field scattering field and radar image features of complex targets. The parametric scattering centre (SC) model of the target has been widely used in the rapid simulation of radar image. Most of the existing SC models are suitable for far‐field scattering where the radar cross section (RCS) is independent of the distance from the target to the radar. However, when the electromagnetic scattering of the target is in the near‐field region of radiation, the RCS of the target changes dramatically in distance. The existing SC model cannot characterise these important near‐field characteristics. In this paper, the near‐field model with the dependence description of the SC on the distance is proposed. Firstly, the scattering characteristics of several main geometric structures of the extended target in the near‐field radiation region are analysed. Then, on the basis of far‐field SC model expressions, the description of the relationship between amplitude and phase of the SC model and distance is added. Finally, the correctness of the near‐field SC model is verified by comparing with the accurate full‐wave numerical method. In order to further illustrate the practicability of the near‐field SC model, an actual aircraft target is used. The results proved that the near‐field SC model has the advantages of high accuracy and high computational efficiency.

Abstract:In this work, based on the previous paper, the scattering center expression is discussed to represent the scattered field of perfect electric conducting (PEC) targets under the quadratic patch subdivision with the stationary phase method (SPM). The scattered field of target discretized by quadratic patches is simulated with the fast physical optics (FPOs) method, which considers the physical mechanism and can adopt large-sized proportional subdivision. The bistatic attributed scattering center (BASC) model is applied to extract the scattering centers of targets. To solve the ill-posed problem and reduce computational time and precision errors while estimating the parameters of BASC, we present a sparse method that combines the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) with adaptive differential evolution (JADE). Numerical examples have demonstrated that the proposed method effectively and precisely extracts scattering centers from complex targets within 2-dB reconstruction error, while the number of patches is greatly reduced by 3 or 4 digits at 10 GHz, from 4352028 to 4606 for the glider model especially.

Abstract:An iterative inverse algorithm of 2D Finite-Element Boundary-Integral (FE-BI) model is proposed for target profile reconstruction in near-field penetration sensing. It is based on the Jacobian matrix of measurements vs. unknown permittivity which can be explicitly derived from the FE-BI formulation. It uses synthetic aperture radar imaging result as an initial guess and confines the unknown region to a localized area around strong scatter. Although the algorithm is targeted for realistic applications such as underground target recognition, its potential is demonstrated via much simplified simulation and experiment. Preliminary results show that the target shape and size can be identified.
