Abstract:A rapid and inexpensive method to produce high-resolution liquid metal patterns and electronics on stretchable substrates was introduced. Two liquid-phase gallium-indium (GaIn) alloy patterns, conductive lines, and interdigitated electrodes, were directly written or shadow mask-printed on a prestretched elastomeric substrate surface. Then, the prestretched substrate was released to recover its original length, and thus, electronic patterns simultaneously shrank on it. After these patterns were transferred to another prestretched substrate by the stamp printing method, the patterning resolution was demonstrated to increase by totally 50 times for the two successive stretch-release-shrink operations. Additionally, the resistance of the handwritten liquid metal conductive line traces remained nearly unchanged during the stretching process, which is believed to be feasible for electrical connections in stretchable electronics. The rapid prototyping of a serpentine strain sensor was successfully demonstrated to be highly sensitive and repeatable with a stretching ratio ranging from 0 to 200%. The proposed method paves a new way to fabricate stretchable electronic devices with high patterning resolution.

Abstract:A rapid and inexpensive method to produce stretchable liquid metal electronics with high resolution is introduced. Here, liquid phase gallium-indium (Gain) alloy is firstly patterned on a pre-stretched elastomer, followed by a natural shrinking process to achieve high resolution stretchable electronic components and interconnects. The idea is inspired from the inflation and deflation of patterned balloons. By a cascaded direct writing and transfer printing step, the printing resolution increases by 20 times on pre-stretched substrates. This rapid prototyping approach paves a new way for microscale printed stretchable electronics.

Abstract:<p>Gallium‐based alloys, which are virtually non‐toxic liquid metals at room temperature, are considered highly promising electrode materials for state‐of‐the‐art electronics with new form factors. Herein, a facile and rapid method to fabricate liquid metal electrodes with highly precise patterns via a one‐step coating is presented. For this work, polymeric stencil masks with dual structures, comprising upper and lower structures for injecting and molding the liquid metal, respectively, are used for direct patterning of the liquid metal via spray deposition for few seconds, enabling the formation of complex and minute patterns including long thin lines and hollow forms. This method can be adapted to 3D substrates of various materials without any surface treatment, owing to the intrinsic adhesive and flexible properties of the polymeric masks ensuring conformal contact with non‐flat surfaces, and is also expected to be applicable to sub‐micron patterns. In addition, a number of highly flexible/stretchable electronic applications, exhibiting no change in electrical conductivity upon consecutive structural deformations, are demonstrated on various substrates including human skin. It is anticipated that these results will not only spur the further development of flexible/stretchable electronics, but also significantly contribute to the innovative on‐site fabrication of wearable electronics with high durability.</p>

Conformable Liquid Metal Printed Epidermal Electronics for Smart Physiological Monitoring and Simulation Treatment

Abstract:Conformable epidermal printed electronics enabled from gallium-based liquid metals (LMs), highly conductive and low-melting-point alloys, are proposed as the core to achieving immediate contact between skin surface and electrodes, which can avoid the skin deformation often caused by conventional rigid electrodes. When measuring signals, LMs can eliminate resonance problems with shorter time to reach steady state than Pt and gelled Pt electrodes. By comparing the contact resistance under different working conditions, it is demonstrated that both ex vivo and in vivo LM electrode-skin models have the virtues of direct and immediate contact with skin surface without the deformation encountered with conventional rigid electrodes. In addition, electrocardio electrodes composed of conformable LM printed epidermal electronics are adopted as smart devices to monitor electrocardiogram signals of rabbits. Furthermore, simulation treatment for smart defibrillation offers a feasible way to demonstrate the effect of liquid metal electrodes (LMEs) on the human body with less energy loss. The remarkable features of soft epidermal LMEs such as high conformability, good conductivity, better signal stability, and fine biocompatibility represent a critical step towards accurate medical monitoring and future smart treatments.
Electrically Induced Reorganization Phenomena of Liquid Metal Film Printed on Biological Skin

Abstract:Liquid metal has been demonstrated to be directly printable on biological skin as physiological measurement elements. However, many fundamental issues remained unclear so far. Here, we disclosed an intriguing phenomenon of electrically induced reorganization of liquid metal film. According to the experiments, when applying an external electric field to liquid metal films which were spray printed on biological skin, it would induce unexpected transformations of the liquid metals among different morphologies and configurations. These include shape shift from a large liquid metal film into a tiny sphere and contraction of liquid metal pool into spherical one. For comprehensively understanding the issues, the impacts of the size, voltage, orientations of the liquid metal electrodes, etc., were clarified. Further, effects of various substrates such as in vitro skin and in vivo skin affecting the liquid metal transformations were experimentally investigated. Compared to the intact tissues, the contraction magnitude of the liquid metal electrode appears weaker on in vivo skin of nude mice under the same electric field. The mechanisms lying behind such phenomena were interpreted through theoretical modeling. Lastly, typical applications of applying the current effect into practical elements such as electrical gating devices were also illustrated as an example. The present findings have both fundamental and practical values, which would help design future technical strategies in fabricating electronically controlled liquid metal electronics on skin.

Abstract:Electronic skins (e-skins) with multifunctional sensing functions have attracted a lot of attention due to their promising applications in intelligent robotics, human-machine interfaces, and wearable healthcare systems. Here, we report a multifunctional e-skin based on patterned metal films for tactile sensing of pressure and temperature with a broad linear response range by implementing the single sensing mechanism of piezoresistivity, which allows for the easy signal processing and simple device configuration. The sensing pixel features serpentine metal traces and spatially distributed microprotrusions. Experimental and numerical studies reveal the fundamental aspects of the multifunctional tactile sensing mechanism of the e-skin, which exhibits excellent flexibility and wearable conformability. The fabrication approach being compatible with the well-established microfabrication processes has enabled the scalable manufacturing of a large-scale e-skin for spatial tactile sensing in various application scenarios.

Abstract:We report a spray deposition technique for patterning liquid metal alloys to form stretchable conductors, which can then be encapsulated in silicone elastomers via the same spraying procedure. While spraying has been used previously to deposit many materials, including liquid metals, this work focuses on quantifying the spraying process and combining it with silicones. Spraying generates liquid metal microparticles (~5 μm diameter) that pass through openings in a stencil to produce traces with high resolution (~300 μm resolution using stencils from a craft cutter) on a substrate. The spraying produces sufficient kinetic energy (~14 m/s) to distort the particles on impact, which allows them to merge together. This merging process depends on both particle size and velocity. Particles of similar size do not merge when cast as a film. Likewise, smaller particles (<1 μm) moving at the same speed do not rupture on impact either, though calculations suggest that such particles could rupture at higher velocities. The liquid metal features can be encased by spraying uncured silicone elastomer from a volatile solvent to form a conformal coating that does not disrupt the liquid metal features during spraying. Alternating layers of liquid metal and elastomer may be patterned sequentially to build multilayer devices, such as soft and stretchable sensors.

Abstract:Liquid metal printing is emerging as an important tool for making wearable electronics. However, very limited academic efforts were made to fulfill such an increasing need. This paper is dedicated to present relatively complete theoretical and experimental characterizations for liquid metal spraying printing towards developing wearable electronic textile. The practical conditions of liquid metal droplets in the spraying printing process such as the jet velocity, the size distribution of droplets and their evenness degree, the morphology of droplets and their unrolling areas after impacting the substrate are quantified. The dominating factors, including the oxidation of liquid metal and the pressure force on cloth substrate during the impacting process, which ensure liquid metal firmly adhere to the cloth, are clarified. Further, various clothes are comparatively investigated to test their capabilities in printing liquid metal conductors, where the resistance difference can be over thousand-fold. In addition to interpreting the basic mechanisms and performances of the spraying printing, two programmable flexible circuits with specifically designed functions such as blinking LED lighting and wireless infrared temperature measurement via current manufacture technology were also demonstrated and evaluated for their washable ability. With the realization of wearable modules via liquid metal printing technology, it can be expected that flexible functional devices on cloth fabricated quickly and directly would witness more broad applications in the coming time.

Abstract:Liquid-metal (LM)-based flexible and stretchable electronics has attracted widespread attention in soft robotics, self- powered devices and electronic skins. Although nanometerization can facilitate the deposition and patterning of LMs onto substrates, subsequent mechanical or laser sintering operations must be employed to recover their conductivity, which limits their wider standardized applications. To address this critical challenge, a novel self-sintering technique to prepare thin conductive patterns by employing a special LM-LAPONITE (R) (LML) ink is presented, which utilizes the capillary force between nanoparticles to sinter LM droplets and therefore requires no subsequent sintering operations. The LML ink is prepared by sonicating the mixture of bulk LM and LAPONITE (R) aqueous dispersion and possesses excellent fluidity. A theoretical model based on surface tension is established to explain the spontaneous sintering process and the effect of forces on LM droplets. In contrast to conventional passive sintering strategies, this self-sintering strategy is substrate-friendly and available to more types of substrates, including both rigid and soft substrates, and even fragile materials like leaves. Furthermore, several typical flexible electronic devices including near-field communication (NFC) tags, leaf circuits and data gloves are fabricated and investigated to demonstrate the capability of this strategy for directly manufacturing LM-based flexible electronic devices.
Pressured liquid metal screen printing for rapid manufacture of high resolution electronic patterns

Abstract:In this paper, a pressured liquid metal screen printing method for rapidly manufacturing electronically conductive patterns is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The atomized liquid metal microdroplets are pushed through the mesh openings to wet the target substrate under the airflow force. As the screen is removed away from the substrate, a liquid metal pattern is formed. The width and the thickness of the printed track can reach small values of 233.7 mu m and 94.5 mu m, respectively, with the surface root mean square roughness of the printed plane at 1.27 mu m. With such a printing method, various kinds of complex electronic patterns such as functional circuits, general art drawings etc. can be fabricated in a short time on flexible or rigid substrates with different surface roughnesses. Durability and bending tests are performed to investigate the reliability and mechanical stability of the printed line resistors. In order to illustrate the screen printing of functional electronics, a liquid metal radio frequency identification antenna tag is fabricated with the reflection coefficient measured. Future applications of the liquid metal screen printing technique can be envisaged in flexible printed circuit board manufacturing, paper-based electronics, metal tags, the art of metal calligraphy & painting and so on.
A Highly Conductive and Stretchable Wearable Liquid Metal Electronic Skin for Long-Term Conformable Health Monitoring

Abstract:Conventional rigid electronics are usually unconformable with soft skins and tend to fail in accurate physiological monitoring and precise treatment. Electronic skins (e-Skins) made by conductive and stretchable materials offer mechanical compliance for fabricating flexible and conformable wearables. Compared to common organic or inorganic conductive materials, gallium-based liquid metals alone own superior conductivity and compliance. Here, we demonstrate a highly conductive and stretchable electronic skin with liquid metal circuits (LMCs) embedded in silicone rubber film, which are functionalized for physiological signals monitoring. Through the designs of serpentine structure, LMCs maintained good electrical conductivity and functionality under over 100% strain. Also, a wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) recording device was fabricated and tested. The device was able to acquire steady signals during real-time measurement of physical activities. The proposed liquid metal e-Skin can be further extended to conformable bio-integrated healthcare devices and intelligent health monitoring networks.

Abstract:In this paper, a new improved mask printing method of liquid metal is developed, which realizes the fast fabrication of flexible electronics on fabrics. Here, polymethacrylates (PMA) glue is printed on fabrics to improve the adhesion effect of liquid metal (EGaIn) on fabrics. Combined with mask printing, liquid metal can be directly and rapidly printed on the fabrics with PMA glue to manufacture flexible electronics, such as LED array circuit, strain sensor and temperature monitoring circuit. With combined the advantages of favorable stretchability and rapid manufacture, the improved liquid metal mask printing method provides an approach with valuable prospects for individualized wearable health care devices. Besides, this method has extensive application prospect in mass production of smart electronic fabrics.

Abstract:We introduce HydroSkin, a low-cost, time-efficient, and accessible fabrication technique for on-skin interfaces. By mixing carbon ink with sodium alginate, we developed a low-cost conductive material suitable for hydrographic printing technology. Compared to existing fabrication methods, our approach streamlines the fabrication process and utilizes cost-effective ink without requiring specialized skills. We showcased multiple application scenarios to demonstrate how HydroSkin can enable users to customize the design and quickly fabricate their on-skin interfaces, including a finger game controller, an ear toucher, an arm control slider, and a fatigue monitoring mask.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Conventional ways of making bio-electrodes are generally complicated, expensive and unconformable. Here we describe for the first time the method of applying Ga-based liquid metal ink as drawable electrocardiogram (ECG) electrodes. Such material owns unique merits in both liquid phase conformability and high electrical conductivity, which provides flexible ways for making electrical circuits on skin surface and a prospective substitution of conventional rigid printed circuit boards (PCBs). METHODS:Fundamental measurements of impedance and polarization voltage of the liquid metal ink were carried out to evaluate its basic electrical properties. Conceptual experiments were performed to draw the alloy as bio-electrodes to acquire ECG signals from both rabbit and human via a wireless module developed on the mobile phone. Further, a typical electrical circuit was drawn in the palm with the ink to demonstrate its potential of implementing more sophisticated skin circuits. RESULTS:With an oxide concentration of 0.34%, the resistivity of the liquid metal ink was measured as 44.1 µΩ·cm with quite low reactance in the form of straight line. Its peak polarization voltage with the physiological saline was detected as -0.73 V. The quality of ECG wave detected from the liquid metal electrodes was found as good as that of conventional electrodes, from both rabbit and human experiments. In addition, the circuit drawn with the liquid metal ink in the palm also runs efficiently. When the loop was switched on, all the light emitting diodes (LEDs) were lit and emitted colorful lights. CONCLUSIONS:The liquid metal ink promises unique printable electrical properties as both bio-electrodes and electrical wires. The implemented ECG measurement on biological surface and the successfully run skin circuit demonstrated the conformability and attachment of the liquid metal. The present method is expected to innovate future physiological measurement and biological circuit manufacturing technique in a large extent.

Abstract:Display devices show great application prospects in various fields. Among them, the flexible display which can quickly produce customizable patterns has attracted the attention of researchers. In this study, two types of electroluminescent devices, which introduce liquid metal printed patterns as the electrodes for electrical input, are proposed, theoretically analyzed, and experimentally characterized. One type is to stack the liquid metal electrode, the emissive layer and the transparent electrode in a sandwich configuration. The other is to construct two patterned liquid metal electrodes on one side of the emissive layer and then emit light from the edge of the liquid metal patterns. Compared with the traditional materials, the liquid metal can be quickly patterned so that the obtained liquid metal electroluminescent devices can display customized and erasable luminous patterns. This new display device is easy to access in virtue of various liquid metal printed methods. For practical illustrations, a wristband for monitoring human body temperature and a programmable 8 x 8 pixels flexible screen with double layer liquid metal printed circuits are further designed and demonstrated. This study opens the door to quickly fabricate personalized displays in low quantities based on liquid metal and shows significant potential in flexible electronics.

Abstract:Abstract Liquid metal is being regarded as a promising material for soft electronics owing to its distinct combination of high electrical conductivity comparable to that of metals and exceptional deformability derived from its liquid state. However, the applicability of liquid metal is still limited due to the difficulty in simultaneously achieving its mechanical stability and initial conductivity. Furthermore, reliable and rapid patterning of stable liquid metal directly on various soft substrates at high-resolution remains a formidable challenge. In this work, meniscus-guided printing of ink containing polyelectrolyte-attached liquid metal microgranular-particle in an aqueous solvent to generate semi-solid-state liquid metal is presented. Liquid metal microgranular-particle printed in the evaporative regime is mechanically stable, initially conductive, and patternable down to 50 μm on various substrates. Demonstrations of the ultrastretchable (~500% strain) electrical circuit, customized e-skin, and zero-waste ECG sensor validate the simplicity, versatility, and reliability of this manufacturing strategy, enabling broad utility in the development of advanced soft electronics.

Abstract:High‐throughput fabrication and integration techniques to achieve multiparameter flexible skin patches for health monitoring have been presented. The techniques involve modularized printing of different sensing components, batch electropolymerization for electrochemical sensors, selection of strain limiting substrates, and usage of anisotropic conductive tapes to facilitate the fabrication and integration processes of the multiparameter sensors. The development of batch fabrication techniques for flexible skin patches may promote the use of these devices in daily health monitoring and public health crisis. Here, a modularized mass fabrication and selective integration approach that can yield multiparameter electronic skin patches are presented. The screen‐printing technique has been adopted to achieve five modularized sensors for electrocardiogram (ECG), temperature, hydration, blood oxygen, and pH sensing as well as a universal central hub to connect the sensors with external wireless circuits. In a single glass substrate, 13 ECG electrodes, more than 200 sensors, or 80 central hubs can be printed with high homogeneity in performance. In addition to rapid printing of these components, special temperature‐sensitive paste, batch electropolymerization processes, selection of stress confining substrates, and usage of anisotropic conductive tapes have been investigated to facilitate the integration processes of the multiparameter skin patches. The systematic techniques presented in this paper may help to overcome the bottleneck that is currently constraining the mass fabrication of multiparameter skin patches, allowing rapid deployment and convenient application of these devices for health monitoring in large populations.

Abstract:Flexible metal electrodes are essential for flexible electronics, where the main challenge is to obtain mask-free patterned metals directly on substrates such as poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) at low cost. This work highlights a feasible strategy named femtosecond laser-activated metal deposition for electroless deposition of metals (Cu, Ni, Ag, and Au) on PDMS, which is suitable for maskless and low-cost fabrication of metal layers on PDMS and even on other materials of different natures including polyethylene terephthalate, paper, Si, and glass. The electrical conductivity of the PDMS/Cu electrode is comparable to that of bulk Cu. Moreover, robust bonding at the PDMS/Cu interface is evidenced by a scotch tape test and bending test of more than 20,000 cycles. Compared with previous studies using a nanosecond laser, the restriction on absorbing sensitizers could be alleviated, and catalysts could originate from precursors without polymer substrates under a femtosecond laser, which may be attributed to nonlinear absorption and ultrashort heating time with the femtosecond laser. Implementing a human-machine interface task is demonstrated by recognizing hand gestures via a multichannel electrode array with high fidelity to control a robot hand.
