Abstract:ABSTRACT Dependence of both acceptance bandwidth and frequency conversion efficiency on the linear periodicity fluctuation in domain-inverted KTP crystals was investigated. The study was mainly focused on three main emission wavelength bands of current commercially available high power optical fiber lasers. That to use these artificially introduced domain periodicity fluctuations as the potential means to match the nonlinear crystal's acceptance bandwidth to a high power fiber laser's emission linewidth is believed effective in maximizing the nonlinear frequency conversion efficiency as much as possible.

Abstract:The filter frequency response and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) capacity of fiber Bragg grating resonator based photonic microwave filter are investigated experimentally by using two lasers with different linewidths as optical sources. The effects of optical source on the photonic microwave filter performance are analyzed. The results show that when the laser linewidth is less than the filter free spectral range (FSR), the filter response is fluctuating and the SNR capacity decreases about 10dB.

Abstract:The relationship between the output frequency tripling (3ω) wavefront and the input fundamental laser (1ω) wavefront is researched in theory and experiment in the frequency conversion process based on type II/II KDP (KH2PO4) crystals. Theoretical results show the output 3ω wavefront distortion is three times of the input 1ω wavefront distortion on the phase-matching condition. The output 3ω and 1ω wavefront are measured by Hartman wavefront sensor in the high power frequency tripling laser system. Experimental results show that the output 3ω wavefront PV value is 2.97 times of the 1ω wavefront value and the output 3ω wavefront RMS value is 3.57 times of the 1ω wavefront value. Therefore, the theoretical relationship between the output 3ω wavefront and the input 1ω wavefront in the frequency conversion system is proved correct within the range of permitted experimental errors.

Abstract:We investigate bandwidth enhancement and response flattening of wavelength conversion based on cascaded sum-frequency generation and difference-frequency generation (SFG/DFG) in quasi-phase-matched periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides by use of two pump lights. Analysis shows that the conversion properties deeply depend on the pump settings. The bandwidth is efficiently enhanced by augmenting the pump wavelength difference. The critical bandwidth corresponding to the response fluctuation of 1dB in a 3-cm-long waveguide reaches 80–90nm, which is enough to cover the entire conventional-band and long-wavelength-band. The cascaded SFG/DFG bandwidth is about 24% broader than that of the cascaded second-harmonic generation and difference-frequency generation-based configuration with the same waveguide length. However, the response fluctuation is also enhanced together with the bandwidth enhancement. The method of pump detuning is presented to flatten the response fluctuation. The fluctuation is reduced by more than 1dB and it can be further reduced by increasing the pump detuning value with a little efficiency penalty.

Abstract:The nonlinear wavelength conversion can generate the laser wavelengths which are not directly available, thereby broadening the laser spectrum range. However, the existence of phase mismatch greatly limits the development and application of nonlinear optical technology. The wavelength conversion schemes in a manner analogous to population transfer in atomic rapid adiabatic passage, stimulated Raman adiabatic passage(STIRAP), and Stark chirped rapid adiabatic passage(SCRAP) provide feasible solutions for efficient and broadband wavelength conversion. SCRAP use the Stark shift caused by the Stark field to generate energy level crossings, thereby, the population in initial state can be efficiently converted to the target state. It does not require the two-photon resonance, can be applied to multi-photon transition. In this paper, by approximate analogy to the adiabatic population theory, a wavelength conversion model with the KTP crystals based on SCRAP is established, the influence of the coupling delay parameters, width parameters, pump intensity, temperature, and incident wavelength on the conversion process are systematically studied. The results show that signal laser energy can almost convert into output laser energy, while the intermediate laser energy is kept extremely low during the conversion process. The conversion process is sensitive to changes in coupling delay parameters, width parameters, and pump intensity. The farther away from the optimal coupling delay parameter, the lower the conversion efficiency. When the width parameter is fixed, as the width parameter increases, the conversion efficiency will first increase to the maximum, and then slowly decrease. At the same time, the greater the value of the width parameter , the greater the maximum conversion efficiency that can be achieved, and the greater the bandwidth that can achieve high-efficiency wavelength conversion. The conversion efficiency increases as the pump intensity increases. However, changes in temperature and incident wavelength have little effect on the conversion efficiency. The above research can provide a theoretical basis for the acquisition of ultraviolet to mid-infrared.

Abstract:We investigate response flatting of cascaded sum- and difference- frequency generation (SFG/DFG)-based wavelength conversion in quasi-phase-matched (QPM) periodically poled lithium niobate wavetguides for wavelength division multiplexing optical communication systems. The cascaded SFG/DFG-based configuration shows more robustly combined properties than conventional DFG-based and cascaded second-harmonic generation and DFG (SHG/DFG)based configurations. The response fluctuation, generated while enhancing the conversion bandwidth, can be efficiently reduced by the method of pump detuning or QPM period detuning.

Abstract:Frequency-doubling in PPKTP, PPMgSLT, and PPMgLN is studied for CW fundamental powers up to 10 W. Effects such as pump depletion and thermal dephasing are found to reduce conversion efficiency by 50% or more.

Abstract:We demonstrate an experimental investigation on the linewidth of a single-frequency Yb-doped phosphate fiber laser through a loss-compensated recirculating delayed self-heterodyne (LC-RDSH) method at 1.0 mu m. A resolution of 3 kHz is achieved by only using a 6 km fiber delay line in the linewidth measurement system. With optimal parameters of the LC-RDSH system, more than 16 orders of beat note are detected. By analyzing the behaviors of different orders of beat note, a broadening effect on the linewidth is observed with an increasing pump strength of the under-tested fiber laser. Associated with theoretical analysis, the frequency noise incorporated with the linewidth broadening is shown to be the attribution of the Lorentzian noise. Frequency noise of the laser is also measured, to verify the observed linewidth characteristics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the LC-RDSH has been applied to the 1.0 mu m window.

Abstract:Solving the time-dependent power flow equation (PFE) provides a useful method to study the transmission bandwidth of step-index silica photonic crystal fibers (SI SPCFs). The transmission bandwidth of these kinds of fibers is determined for different air-hole structures (different numerical apertures (NAs)) and different distribution widths of the Gaussian launch beam. The results indicate that the lower the NA of SI SPCFs, the higher the bandwidth (for example, for a lower NA of SI SPCFs, a bandwidth that is eight times larger is obtained at a fiber length of 3500 m). The narrower launch beam at short fiber lengths results in a wider bandwidth. The longer the fiber (>300 m), the much less the effect of the launch beam width on the bandwidth. The bandwidth becomes independent of the width of the launch beam distribution at the fiber length at which a steady-state distribution (SSD) is reached. These results are useful for some potential applications, such as high capacity transmission optical fiber systems.

Abstract:We present a theoretical and experimental study on the bandwidth of parametric down-converted photons generated from periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal pumped by a pulsed laser. By comparison of crystals with different lengths and pump beams of different bandwidths, we demonstrate that the bandwidth of down-converted photons will increase for a broader bandwidth of pump pulse and decrease for a longer crystal, but the influence of crystal length will become weaker along with increase of both crystal length and pump pulse bandwidth. Especially under the conditions of our experiment, the bandwidth almost remains unchanged for longer crystals when pumped by a femtosecond laser. This may be helpful for schemes in which pulsed lasers are used to pump PPLN crystals.

Abstract:In the ultra-long distance sensing domain, recently Raman random fiber laser (RRFL) demonstrated advantages of ultrawide sensing-bandwidth in dynamic sensing, compared with pulse-probing cases. However, such a scheme is still in the preliminary stage, and the key parameters such as sensitivity have not been characterized. In this work, a time-dependent spectrum-balanced model is proposed, which can accurately and quickly describe the spectral shape of RRFL and the evolution of the power and the spectrum. Based on this model, the relationship between the sensitivity and the feedback bandwidth is studied. The calculated results show that the sensitivity is inversely proportional to the feedback bandwidth. Then in the proof-of-concept experiment, by changing the bandwidth of sensing FBG, the results of sensitivity are well coincident with the simulation. This work provides an effective platform for studying the evolution of RRFL spectrum, as well as a novel way for further enhancing the performance of the dynamic sensing system based on ultra-long RRFL.
Measuring High-Frequency Responses of an Electro-Optic Phase Modulator Based on Dispersion Induced Phase Modulation to Intensity Modulation Conversion

Abstract:We investigate the phase modulation to intensity modulation conversion in dispersive fibers for measuring frequency responses of electro-optic phase modulators, and demonstrate two typical measurements with cascade path and fold-back path. The measured results achieve an uncertainty of less than 2.8% within 20 GHz. Our measurements show stable and repeatable results because the optical carrier and its phase-modulated sidebands are affected by the same fiber impairments. The proposed method requires only dispersive fibers and works without any small-signal assumption, which is applicable for swept frequency measurement at different driving levels and operating wavelengths.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the evolution of spatial modulation of broadband laser pulses with different pulse durations through a medium with non-instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity. By modifying the input laser pulse width, we observe the nonlinear growth of the spatial stripes that arise from interference with different modulation frequencies, and then obtain the gain spectra of the spatial modulation which clearly reveal the influence of relaxation effect on spatiotemporal modulation instability. We find that all gain spectra have the similar fastest growing frequency, but they have tails at higher frequency region in which the growth rate of gain is bigger for shorter pulse duration. The experimental results are confirmed by the perturbational analysis.

Abstract:After considering simultaneously Kerr nonlinear effect, group velocity dispersion and net gain in laser amplifying medium, a basic equation describing the propagation of an optical pulse in amplifying medium has been deduced. As an example, the propagation characteristics of a short pulse in Nd: glass laser amplifying medium has been simulated numerically, and the effect of chirped pulse frequency fluctuation on its propagation characteristics has been discussed emphatically.
Performance Improvement Method for Large Aperture Frequency Conversion Crystal

Abstract:In huge-scale high peak power laser facility, the frequency conversion unit is responsible for the conversion of fundamental infrared wave at 1053nm into ultraviolet wave at 351nm. In this paper, the mechanism of service performance degradation of frequency doubling crystal is revealed by combining field experiments and numerical simulations. Moreover, we propose a flexure support method that can effectively reduce crystal surface distortion. Further, an experiment platform for offline mounting of frequency conversion crystal is built, and the mechanical and optical characteristics are verified by the experimental results. Finally, online verification is carried out in China's high peak power laser facility. The results show that the proposed mounting method can significantly modify the crystal surface figure, improve its online performance and increase the highest efficient output power of high peak power laser facility.

Abstract:We investigated the issue of parametric bandwidth for a collinear quasi-phase-matching (QPM) optical parametric amplification (OPA). Mathematical model for evaluating the parametric bandwidth tolerance of the OPA was derived by expanding the wave-vector mismatch in Taylor series and taking the first two terms into consideration for accuracy. Based on the model, the variation of pump acceptance spectral bandwidth with parametric wavelength was discussed. The correlating curve of the pump wavelength and the parametric wavelength was obtained for the largest pump acceptance spectral bandwidth. These results were compared to that obtained by numerically calculating the parametric gain curves of OPA when pumped with different Gauss bandwidths by means of three-wave mixing equations directly, and were found to be in good accordance. The results presented are helpful for specifying the optimal pump wavelength of the parametric amplification and oscillation.
Parametric Wavelength Conversion in Photonic Crystal Fibers

Abstract:Nonlinear wavelength conversion provides flexible solutions for generating wideband tunable radiation in novel wavelength band. Parametric process in photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) has attracted comprehensive interests since it can act as broadband tunable light sources in non-conventional wavelength bands. The current state-of-the-art photonic crystal fibers can provide more freedom for customizing the dispersion and nonlinearity which is critical to the nonlinear process, such as four wave mixing (FWM), compared with the traditional fibers fabricated with doping techniques. Here we demonstrate broadband parametric wavelength conversion in our homemade photonic crystal fibers. The zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) of PCFs is critical for the requirement of phase matching condition in the parametric four wave mixing process. Firstly a procedure of the theoretical design of PCF with the ZDW at 1060 nm is proposed through our homemade simulation software. A group of PCF samples with gradually variable parameters are fabricated according to the theoretical design. The broadband parametric gain around 1060 nm band is demonstrated pumped with our homemade mode locked fiber laser in the anomalous dispersion region. Also a narrow gain band with very large wavelength detune with the pump wavelength in the normal dispersion region is realized. Wavelength conversion with a span of 194 nm is realized. Furthermore a fiber optical parametric oscillator based on the fabricated PCF is built up. A wavelength tunable range as high as 340 nm is obtained. This report demonstrates a systematic procedure to realize wide band wavelength conversion based on PCFs.

Abstract:The nonlinear frequency conversion approach remains as the dominant approach to generate new laser wavelengths that are hardly achievable via regular lasing techniques relying on population inversion. Increasing either a media's optical nonlinearity or the power density of a fundamental beam or increasing both at the same time is believed to be very effective in order to enhance the nonlinear conversion efficiency. In this research, periodic ferroelectric domain structure was introduced into lithium niobate single crystal fibers by electrical poling, which then allows simultaneous use of efficient quasi-phase matching (QPM) method and strong optical confinement inside an optical fiber guide. The introduced periodic domain structures were revealed using a crossly polarized optical microscope (CPOM) and a confocal scanning optical microscope (CSOM) for quality assurance. Efficient second-harmonic generation (SHG) characterization was also performed using such fibers.

Abstract:We report a theoretical analysis and numerical simulation of bandwidth and stability enhancement in optical parametric amplification (OPA) when using chirped periodically poled KTiOPO4. Calculation results show that the bandwidth and stability are enhanced significantly by the use of a chirped grating. Temperature-gradient and fanned gratings are introduced and chirp factors of them are deduced and calculated. The use of a fanned grating flattens the Quasi-phase-matching response and improves the efficiency. Finally, we propose a method to reduce the instability induced by an unstable pump.

Abstract:We propose a designed aperiodic domain-inverted optical superlattice structure, where the performance of ultrashort-pulse wavelength conversion, relative-broad and flat conversion band with high conversion efficiency, has been well-balanced and enhanced in comparison with those in periodical or linear-chirped optical superlattices. Using this structure, we present a 5.5-nm flat band with almost no pulse distortion for picosecond wavelength conversion in the C-band. Moreover, the uniformity of all inverted domains may provide more convenience for poling. The above benefits may bring promising applications in generating broadband continuous-variable entanglement source and terahertz source with equivalent generation rate.
