Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally investigate a training-aided iterative frequency offset estimation (IFOE) method, which can track dynamic frequency offset (FO) drift in coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems. In contrast to existing FO estimation algorithms that compute specific FO values, in IFOE, only the sign value of FO is judged and recorded without any phase calculation. The estimated FO is updated once for every data block based on FO signs obtained from multiple previous blocks, which helps combat noise and allows the shortening of the employed training symbol. We experimentally investigate the performance of IFOE in a 160-km CO-OFDM system. The results show that IFOE achieves superior bit error rate performance to a one-time FO estimator (without FO tracking) and approaches the performance of multiple separate FO estimators that use longer training symbols.

Abstract:For the existing time-domain methods of carrier-frequency offset estimation for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) systems,estimation range is enlarged at a cost of estimation accuracy reduction,or vice versa.A novel multistage frequency offset estimation algorithm based on time-domain training sequence was proposed to avoid the conflict between estimation accuracy and estimation range The algorithom gradually approached through multiple stages and removed the phase ambiguity in every stage,so improved the estimation accuracy continuously.Then the estimates obtained in all the steps were combined by carrying out the best linear unbiased estimation(BLUE) to further improve the estimation accuracy.Theoretical analysis and simulation show that by replacing heavy search by simple modification,the proposed algorithm can reduce significantly the computational complexity for estimation of large frequency offset while maintains good performance.The main operations of this algorithm can be carried out in parallel,thus the algorithm can be applied to high-data-rate communication systems.

Abstract:This paper proposes a pilot-assisted sampling frequency offset (SFO) estimation algorithm for MIMO OFDM (multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) systems. The sampling frequency offset is estimated from phase errors in the received pilot subcarrier symbols between two transmitted OFDM blocks. The optimal weight for each SFO estimate is derived. The proposed weighted method is remarkably superior to the unweighted method, and the receive diversity exploited by the proposed method can significantly reduce the MSE (mean square error) of the SFO estimator. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately estimate the SFO in both AWGN channels and multipath fading channels. © 2008 IEEE.

Abstract:Synchronization is one of the most crucial techniques in OFDM.This paper proposes a novel carrier frequency offset estimation algorithm for interleaved OFDMA uplink.In interleaved OFDMA uplink,each user's signal has a special periodic structure within an OFDMA block.By utilizing the signal structure characteristic and novel subspace-based method,multiusers carrier frequency offsets can be obtained This algorithm is proposed by using total least squares(TLS) method instead of eigenvalue decomposition to obtain the noise subspace.The algorithm has a low computational complexity in comparison with the multiple signal classification(MUSIC) algorithm and the performance of the algorithm compares well with the MUSIC algorithm.Simulation results show that the method is effective.

Abstract:This paper presents a data-aided Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO) estimation algorithm targeting the Wideband OFDM systems. Utilizing 3 consecutive preambles and processing them at frequency domain, the algorithm is robust to both Frequency Independent (F-I) and Frequency Dependent (F-D) I/Q Mismatch (I/Q-M). To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed CFO estimation technique, we conduct extensive simulations based on Multi-Band OFDM Ultra-Wide Band wireless transmission. Compared to the ideal case when the CFO has been perfectly estimated, the performance loss at 8% Packet Error Rate (PER) is less than 0.5 dB.

Abstract:OFDM(orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) is very sensitive to frequency offset originating from the Doppler frequency offset and the frequency difference between transmitter and receiver,resulting in severe ICI(inter-carrier interference) and performance degradation. In order to solve this problem,an algorithm based on subspace method and utilizing the VC (virtual carrier) is proposed. The adaptive realization of this algorithm is studied. Simulation shows that the estimated values by the algorithm proposed matches the set values very well.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a new carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation scheme for interleaved orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) transmission. We employ multi-antenna at the receiver and exploit the rank reduction approach to blindly estimate the CFOs of multiple users. The proposed scheme supports full load transmission that allows all sub-carriers being allocated to users, which is a significant advantage over the existing schemes. Both performance analysis and numerical results are provided to corroborate the proposed studies.

Abstract:According to the situation that non-ideal factors of analog front-end in wideband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM)system exit at the same time, this paper presents an estimation algorithm of Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO)with presence of I/Q mismatch(I/Q-M). The scheme utilizes 3 consecutive preambles and processes them at frequency domain to acquire 2 different estimation algorithms and the carrier frequency offset is divided into two scopes using different algorithms respectively on the basis of I/Q mismatch degree and noise. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is able to estimate the offset accurately to both Frequency Independent(F-I)and Frequency Dependent(F-D)I/Q mismatch.

This paper proposes an ESPRIT based algorithm to estimate the multi-user frequency offsets via subspace rotational invariance technique. Simulation results illustrate the accuracy of the frequency offset estimation algorithm.

Abstract:For solving the problem of non-ideal factors introduced from the analog front-end in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems, a joint estimation method of Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO) and Sampling Frequency Offset (SFO) is proposed. This algorithm uses three consecutive preamble symbols to estimate and is robust to large I/Q imbalance. It can reduce interference of Gaussian noise by considering all the samples and taking the advantage of them. Compared to the previous methods, the simulation results show that the proposed method can provide high precision in CFO and SFO estimation, which is robust to large-scale SNR and I/Q imbalance.

Abstract:Frame synchronization in MIMO-OFDM(multi input multi output-orthogonal frequency division multipluxing) systems is more difficult than in OFDM systems because one receive antenna will get several waveforms from different transmit antennas.Furthermore,those waveforms will be degraded by multi-path delay.An improved preamble structure for MIMO-OFDM frame synchronization and carrier frequency offset estimation was presented.The orthogonal preamble for frame synchronization makes it possible that a receive antenna can distinguish the fine arriving time of different signals from different transmit antennas.The preamble is not only orthogonal in time domain,but also has a fine characteristic in frequency domain.Simulation results show that the preamble structure has good performance both in frame synchronization and carrier frequency offset estimation.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new computationally efficient blind carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimator for multi-input multi-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems. A cost function is carefully designed and can be exactly expressed as the superposition of very few harmonically related cosine waves even with the effect of the noise. Using this property, the minimization of the designed cost function can be solved in a quite computationally efficient manner without any exhaustive grid search procedure. It is seen that the proposed estimator can achieve comparable estimation performance as existing competitors with substantially reduced computational burden. Moreover, in order to improve the estimation performance, we further develop an enhanced CFO estimator by introducing an additional one-step adjustment. We find that the enhanced estimator can attain almost the same estimation performance as the existing maximum likelihood estimator but with a lower order of computational burden. We provide both numerical results and theoretical performance analysis to corroborate the proposed studies.

Abstract:This paper investigates Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO) estimation in the uplink of the Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) systems with the interleaved subcarrier assignment. CFOs between the transmitters and the uplink receiver will destroy orthogonality among different subcarriers, hence resulting in inter-carrier interference and multiuser interference. A two-stage frequency offset estimation algorithm based on subspace processing is proposed. The main advantage of the proposed method is that it can obtain the CFOs of all users simultaneously using only one OFDMA block. Compared with the previously known methods, it not only has a relatively low implementation complexity but is also suitable for random subchannel assignment.

Abstract:In orthogonal frequency-division multiplex access (OFDMA) downlink systems, the carrier-frequency offset (CFO) between the multiple transceivers introduces inter-carrier interference (ICI). In this letter, we propose an iterative precoding scheme to suppress the ICI due to CFO. This scheme is applied at the transmitter, and can jointly cancel the ICI for all the receivers. Moreover, by the studies of the convergence behavior of the iterations, a sufficient condition for the convergence is presented. The theoretical analysis and simulation results both show that this iterative scheme is equivalent to the zero-forcing (ZF) scheme in function, but with much lower complexity.

Abstract:This paper proposes a fast joint frame synchronization and frequency offset acquisition algorithm for OFDM systems. A training sequence composed by linear frequency modulation signals is superimposed on the data signal at the transmitter side. Then, by fractional Fourier transform the frame synchronization and frequency offset acquisition can be obtained from the received signal simultaneously. Even under the low signal to noise ratio conditions, this algorithm can keep the estimation accuracy with lower computational complexity. Theoretical analysis and simulation results over AWGN and multi-path channel prove this point.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel algorithm for residual phase estimation in wireless OFDM systems, including the carrier frequency offset (CFO) and the sampling frequency offset (SFO). The subcarriers are partitioned into several regions which exhibit pairwise correlations. The phase increment between successive OFDM blocks is exploited which can be estimated by two estimators with different computational loads. Numerical results of estimation variance are presented. Simulations indicate performance improvement of the proposed technique over several conventional schemes in a multipath channel.

Abstract:Multi-path fading and multiple access interference largely degrade the performance of carrier-frequency offset and timing offset estimations in OFDMA uplink systems. This paper proposes a robust algorithm with low complexity for joint estimation of carrier-frequency offset and timing offset. The phase differences in the received sub-carrier signals between two consecutive training symbols are employed and a robust sequential least squares algorithm is used to improve the performance of the estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed low complexity algorithm outperforms the linear least squares (LLS) estimator and approaches the performance of the iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) estimator.

Abstract:A carrier frequency offset synthetic estimation algorithm for IEEE802.11a OFDM frame is presented. The proposed algorithm estimates the frequency offset of the OFDM frame in two steps: acquisition and tracking step. It is proved by simulation result that this algorithm has a larger estimation range, higher throughput efficiency and lower computational complexity than other algorithms using preamble structure for frequency offset estimation without degrading the variance of the estimation error.

Abstract:This paper presents a method to counteract the detrimental effects of carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) in the uplink of OFDMA-based wireless networks. The CFO values of different users are first estimated from the received decomposed signal using the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE). The CFOs effects are then compensated based on the estimated values and also taking advantage of an iterative parallel interference cancelation (PIC) scheme. A novel contribution of this paper is introducing an iterative concatenated estimation and compensation algorithm for suppressing the residual interference due to imperfect estimators. The introduced method is successful where the estimator converges after only one iteration with a significant improvement in estimation accuracy. Also very close BER performance results can be achieved to that of systems with perfect knowledge or without CFOs particularly at practical SNRs.
