Abstract:AIM: The use of impression technique for gaining the morphology of facial soft tissues, may be influenced by some factors, such as the patient’s body position and impression material. For this reason, this study was to investigate the utility of three-dimensional (3D) structured-light measurement technique together with rapid prototyping technique in maxillofacial prosthetics. METHODS: Based on 3D structured-light measurement technique, a self-developed 3D optical measurement system was used to acquire the primitive point data of a patient with severe facial defect caused by electric burn in the Department of Prosthodontics, the Ninth People’s Hospital of Shanghai in April 2007. Through Imageware and Geomagic studio image processing software, aberrant data were eliminated and smoothed. Registering and triangulating operations were performed to construct a 3D image of the face. Reverse engineering software allowed reconstruction of a facial digital model. The final 3D reconstruction of the face was saved in the pattern of .stl and created in the thickness of 3 mm. The 3D resin model of the patient was fabricated by fuse deposition modeling (FDM), and was compared with the patient in shape and size. RESULTS: The 3D face model with use of 3D optical measurement system was vivid and complete. The CAD model of the patient’s face was smooth and clear after handled by image processing software. The rein model of the face was also produced successfully by reverse engineering software and FDM rapid prototyping machine. The morphology of the solid model built with resin was in rather good agreement with the original face. CONCLUSION: The 3D face profile can be captured and fabricated based on 3D structured-light measurement technique and rapid prototyping. The main advantage of the 3D structure-light scanning in conjunction with RP is the ability to reconstruct facial profile models using safe and accurate digital methods instead of traditional impression and some other 3D scan techniques. It would be helpful for CAD/CAM design of maxillofacial prostheses, and can improve the communications between patients and doctors.
