Abstract:As the newest video coding standard, HEVC adopts plenty of state-of-art techniques to improve the coding efficiency. Thus its performance is better than that of all the existing standards. However, these modifications also generate huge computational complexity. To solve this problem, we proposed two fast intra prediction algorithms. By judging the texture complexity of coding unit (CU), a fast CU size decision algorithm can remove some unnecessary CU sizes. Besides, based on the statistic character of intra prediction modes and the correlation of adjacent CUs, a fast intra prediction mode decision algorithm can directly select the optimal intra prediction mode or remove some candidate modes. Compared with the exhaustive intra mode decision method in HEVC, our fast algorithms can effectively save the coding time, while the decrease of coding quality is negligible.

Abstract:In this paper, a fast intra prediction algorithm for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is proposed by adopting the mode correlation between adjacent coding units. The proposed approach is realized by two pieces. Firstly, the prediction mode and partition structure for the current coding unit will inherit its optimal prediction coding unit directly if the Structural Similarity (SSIM) between the adjacent coding units satisfies the threshold condition. Secondly, unless the first case occurs, a two-step rough mode decision with adaptive threshold method including Sum of Absolute Difference (SAD) and Sum of Absolute Hadamard Transformed Difference (SATD) criterions is used to accelerate intra mode decision process based on HEVC test Model (HM) encoder. Besides, the most probable mode (MPM) which refers to the optimal prediction mode of the coded left and upper Prediction Units (PUs) surrounding the current PU is also considered. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can save 30.18 % encoding time on average with negligible loss of coding efficiency compared with HM10.0. The complexity and the bitrate are reduced by 11.45 and 0.46 % respectively compared with coding tree pruning method.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a fast intra-prediction mode decision algorithm based on the probability statistics of the best prediction mode and the relevance of the neighboring blocks for high efficiency video coding (HEVC) to reduce its encoding complexity. The intra prediction candidates are reduced before Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO) procedure by two steps of rough mode decision. Sum of Absolute Difference (SAD) of the residuals is used in the first step and modes with smaller SAD values are retained. We execute the Hadamard transform on prediction residuals from the rough modes to derive the Sum of Absolute Hadamard Transformed Difference (SATD), and then the rate-distortion cost function based on SATD is used in the second rough mode decision. Finally the most probable mode (MPM) is considered for RDO process to select the best intra prediction mode. Experiments results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm is quite efficient for intra prediction speed-up. Compared with HM 4.0, the proposed algorithm reduces the encoding time by 30.18% while the PSNR decrease is negligible, 0.06 dB on average. And the bitrate is only increased by 1.97% on average.

Abstract:The coding efficiency of currently scalable video coding is very high at the cost of high coding complexity. Therefore, it is extremely important to improve the coding speed. By making use of the advantage of the quality scalable video coding (QSVC) structure, we propose a new fast Intra coding algorithm for QSVC. Based on the coding structure of QSVC, temporal, spatial and inter-layer correlations are employed together to predict candidate macro-block (MB) modes and their encoding orders to exclude low possible modes, and then three new early termination methods are proposed. In addition to MB modes, temporal, spatial and inter-layer correlations are also adopted together to estimate weight values and orders of all directional modes. Experimental results demonstrate that the coding speed of the proposed algorithm can be improved by 63.58 % in average with negligible coding loss.

Abstract:Due to multi-layer encoding and Inter-layer prediction, Scalable High Efficiency Video Coding (SHVC) has extremely high coding complexity. It is very crucial to improve its coding speed so as to promote widespread and cost-effective SHVC applications. In this paper, we propose a new probability-based fast Intra prediction algorithm for spatial SHVC. More specifically, first, we integrate depth probabilities with textural based all-zero blocks and all-nonzero blocks through Lagrange Interpolation Polynomial (LIP) to derive thresholds to early skip unlikely depths and early terminate depth selection. Second, to early skip Intra mode prediction, we combine mode probabilities with Jarque-Bera test through LIP to test the residual coefficients of Inter-layer reference (ILR) mode. Third, we adopt the difference of Hadamard Costs (HCs) of horizontal, vertical and diagonal directional modes to predict candidate directional modes (DMs), and then exploit both the percentages of gradient amplitudes and HCs for DM early termination. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve a speed up gain of more than 61% with 0.03% decrease in Bjøntegaard Delta Bit Rate on average.

Abstract:Scalable High Efficiency Video Coding (SHVC) is the extension of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). In intra prediction for quality SHVC, a Coding Unit (CU) is recursively divided into a quadtree-based structure from the largest CU to the smallest CU, in which 35 intra prediction modes and Inter-Layer Reference (ILR) mode are checked to determine the best possible mode. This leads to very high coding efficiency but also results in an extremely high coding complexity. To improve coding speed while maintaining coding efficiency, in this paper, we propose a new efficient algorithm for fast intra prediction for enhancement layer in SHVC. First, temporal and spatial correlations, as well as their correlation degrees, are combined in a Naive Bayes classifier to predict depth probabilities and skip depths with low likelihood. Second, for a given depth candidate, we combine ILR mode probability with Partial Zero Blocks (PZBs) based on the Sum of Squared Differences (SSD) to determine whether the ILR mode is the best one. In that case, we can skip intra prediction, which requires very high complexity. Third, initial Intra Modes (IMs) are obtained through Sobel operator, and are combined with the relationship between IMs and their corresponding Hadamard Cost (HC) values to predict candidate IMs in Rough Mode Decision (RMD). Then, an analytical criterion of early termination is developed based on the HC values of two neighboring IMs in the Rate-Distortion Optimization (RDO) process. Finally, we combine depth probabilities and the distribution of residual coefficients at the current depth to early terminate depth selection. The proposed scheme can significantly decrease the complexity of depth determination while reducing the complexity of mode decision for a depth candidate. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve a speed up gain of more than 80% in average, while maintaining coding efficiency.

Abstract:Scalable High-Efficiency Video Coding (SHVC) is an extension of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). Since the coding procedure for HEVC is very complex, the coding procedure for SHVC is even more complex, it is very important to improve its coding speed. In this paper, we have proposed a fast mode and depth decision algorithm for Intra prediction of Quality SHVC. Initially, only partial modes are checked to determine the local minimum points (LMPs) based on the relationships between the modes and their corresponding Hadamard Costs (HC); and then only partial depths are checked by skipping depths with low possibilities indicated based on their inter-layer correlations and textural features. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm could improve coding speed by 61.31% on average with negligible coding efficiency losses.

Abstract:Due to the problems of the new generation of video coding standard HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Coding), such as high computational complexity and the large computation, This paper proposes a fast inter-mode decision algorithm based on image texture features and by using Sobel operator the edge features are extracted from CU which is partitioned by simulation, and then the final partitioning size of CU is determined by the texture features contained in the current CU block of simulation partitioning. By using this method, both of the traverse layers of CU depth and the times of inter predictive coding are reduced. Thus the computational complexity of coding terminal is lowered effectively. The experimental results showed that, compared with inter-mode decision algorithm in HEVC standard, the time of this method is saved 45.35% on average with little loss of coding efficiency and PSNR

Abstract:AVS3 is the latest generation of video coding standard developed independently by China. It obtains 50% bitrate savings under the same visual quality as compared with the previous generation coding standard AVS2, largely due to availability of numerous new coding tools. However, these newly introduced coding tools increase the computational complexity significantly and thus severely hinder the real applications of AVS3. In light of the above, this paper presents an innovative fast intra mode decision method that exploits texture information. In particular, for each Prediction Unit (PU), the Sobel operator is employed to obtain the gradient information, which helps to produce candidate intra prediction modes. In addition, to trade off coding efficiency against computational complexity, the PU content flatness is exploited to determine the number of candidate modes. The proposed method is implemented on HPM-4.0.1, and the experimental results demonstrate that it obtains 35.2% encoding time saving with moderate compression performance loss.

Abstract:Emerging High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) video coding standard promises the significant compression performance improvement compared to the H.264/AVC. However it comes with the tremendous encoding complexity increase. Thus, it is very useful and necessary to develop fast algorithms for HEVC, so as to reduce the encoder complexity. In this paper, we propose a fast intra prediction scheme for HEVC to reduce the prediction mode search for each prediction unit. For all available test sequences provided by the JCT-VC, it demonstrates 38% encoding time reduction for all intra case with BD-RATE increase about 2.9%. Several sub-algorithms are developed and integrated for complexity reduction. First, we applied the Hadamard transform on 2:1 downsampled prediction residual to derive the sum of absolute Hadamard transformed difference (SATD) for rough mode decision, where a progressive search process is then used to reduce effective mode candidates for fully rate-distortion optimized quantization (RDOQ). Finally, an early termination based on SATD cost and mode distances is also included in RDOQ process to further complexity reduction. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that our proposed method is quite efficient for intra mode prediction speed-up. Our proposal is complementary to other separated works on fast coding unit, prediction unit, and transform unit decision. We expect more encoder complexity reduction by combing our solution and other fast algorithms.

A Fast Intra Prediction Method for H.264 Video Coding

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel fast intra prediction method to optimize H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video coding. In H.264, coding performance is enhanced through spatial prediction besides temporal prediction. In its luminance intra prediction, 4 modes for 16×16 block-size and 9 directional modes for 4×4 block-size are utilized, and the optimal intra mode is selected by R-D optimization, so the intra mode selection results in high coding complexity. To reduce the complexity of intra prediction, the fast hierarchical mode selection method is proposed with fewer modes to be examined, and intermediate computing results are reused. Therefore the intra prediction mode decision process is accelerated greatly. With the proposed fast intra prediction mode selection method, the intra prediction time can be reduced above 30% with less than 2% increase of bitrate, and up to 0.04dB loss in performance compared to the brute intra prediction mode selection method in H.264 reference software. The results are obtained by encoding with all I-frames, and even less performance loss can be achieved with the same time saving if encoding in I, P and B frames. So the complexity of computation can reduce constantly.

Abstract:With multi-layer encoding and Inter-layer prediction, Spatial Scalable High Efficiency Video Coding (SSHVC) has extremely high coding complexity. It is very crucial to speed up its coding to promote widespread and cost-effective SSHVC applications. Specifically, we first reveal that the average RD cost of Inter-layer Reference (ILR) mode is different from that of Intra mode, but they both follow the Gaussian distribution. Based on this discovery, we apply the classic Gaussian Mixture Model and Expectation Maximization to determine whether ILR mode is the best mode thus skipping Intra mode. Second, when coding units (CUs) in enhancement layer use Intra mode, it indicates very simple texture is presented. We investigate their Directional Mode (DM) distribution, and divide all DMs into three classes, and then develop different methods with respect to classes to progressively predict the best DMs. Third, by jointly considering rate distortion costs, residual coefficients and neighboring CUs, we propose to employ the Conditional Random Fields model to early terminate depth selection. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve coding speed with negligible coding efficiency losses.

Abstract:As the next generation standard of video coding, the High Efficiency Video Coding(HEVC) achieves significantly better coding efficiency than all existing video coding standards, which is however at the cost of a much higher computation complexity. To address this issue, this paper presents a gradient-based fast decision algorithm for intra prediction in HEVC. More specifically, the intra prediction in HEVC is divided into two stages: prediction unit(PU) size decision and mode decision. At the PU size decision process, four orientation features are extracted from the coding unit by the intensity gradient filters to decide the texture complexity and texture direction of the coding unit, and then the texture direction is used to exclude impossible prediction modes at the mode decision process. Compared to HEVC reference software, the proposed algorithm saves around 56.7% of the encoding time in intra high efficiency setting and up to 70.86% in intra low complexity setting with slight performance degradation.

Abstract:By analyzing the intra prediction coding characteristics of HD video sequences,a conclusion that forbidding Intra4×4 mode and using Intra8×8 and Intra16×16 modes in luma prediction can increase the coding rate significantly with almost no bit rate increase and SNR degradation is reached.Based on the conclusion,a new and fast intra prediction algorithm is proposed.This algorithm decreases the computational complexity apparently by importing a pre-decision which chooses a prediction mode between Intra8×8 and Intra16×16 before intra prediction.Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can increase 27.8% on average of the total encoding rate,with a slight increase in bit rate and a negligible SNR drop.

Abstract:H.264/AVC achieves higher compression efficiency by employing multiple modes inter prediction, rate-distortion (RD) optimal mechanism and other new techniques. Distortion metric plays an important role in video compression performance. Structural similarity (SSIM) is a new image quality assessment method, which is more consistent with Human Vision Systems (HVS). This paper proposes to adopt SSIM as the distortion metric in the inter prediction cost functions, named "improved inter prediction method based on SSIM" (IPBSS). It is an improved method of the authors' previous work on MEBSS (Motion Estimation Method Based on Structural Similarity). Simulation results show that the proposed IPBSS can averagely save bit rate more than 13% while maintaining almost the same video quality with QP=10, 20 and 30. That is a better result than the authors' previous work MEBSS.

Abstract:High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the next generation video compression standard providing significant coding performance. It adopts 35 intra prediction modes with larger CU size to improve the intra encoding efficiency, so that cause a high computational complexity. In this paper, two fast intra-prediction algorithms are proposed to reduce the number of candidate modes for rate-distortion (RD) optimization. We obtain an optimal adjacent modes (OAM) list consisting of dominant directions through the analysis of costs of several general direction modes. Furthermore, we improve the most probable mode (MPM) algorithm to make full use of the spatial correlation between neighbour prediction blocks instead of simply merging the prediction modes of neighbour prediction blocks into the candidate list. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms can reduce about 27.3% of the encoding time compared to the HEVC test model 14.0, while the decrease of coding quality is negligible.

Abstract:The emerging High-Efficiency Video Coding video coding standard has shown the significant coding performance improvement compared to the H.264/AVC with the cost of huge complexity increase. Hence, HEVC fast encoding algorithms are highly demanded for real-time applications. In this paper, we propose several early termination schemes for fast intra prediction in HEVC. More specifically, variation of coding mode costs are used to terminate current coding unit (CU) mode decision as well as TU size selection, where the CU costs are derived at the rough mode decision phase using Hadamard transform. Neighboring modes' costs are also used to skip full rate-distortion optimized quantization (RDOQ). For all available test sequences provided by the JCT-VC, it demonstrates about 32% encoding time reduction for All Intra configuration with BD-RATE increase about 1.1%. Our proposal is complementary to some of other fast intra prediction methods such as fast rough mode decision. We expect more encoder speedup by integrating our method with other published works.
