Abstract:We theoretically investigate the electron dynamics of the high-order harmonics generation process by combining a near-infrared 800 nm driving pulse with a mid-infrared 2000 nm control field. We also investigate the emission time of harmonics using time-frequency analysis to illustrate the physical mechanisms of high-order harmonic generation. We calculate the ionization rate using the Ammosov-Delone-Krainov model and interpret the variations in harmonic intensity for different control field strengths and delays. We find that the width of the harmonic plateau can be extended when the control electric field is added, and a supercontinuum from 198 to 435 eV is generated, from which an isolated 61-as pulse can be directly obtained.

Abstract:By using the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we theoretically explored the high-order harmonic generation process under the interaction of high-intensity two-color ultrashort driving laser pulses with atoms. The symmetry of the electric field of the laser pulse will be broken. The producing electric field was controlled at the subcycle level by an IR laser and its second harmonic, which has the unique characteristic that two sequential half-cycles become distinct, rather than merely opposite in sign. Compared with the case of the atom in the fundamental laser pulse, the harmonic efficiency showed an increase of 1∼2 orders of magnitude at specific harmonic order with this combined pulse action. Through the theoretical analysis with the “three-step model”, it was demonstrated that the enhancement of the harmonic intensity is due to the fast ionization of electrons at the ionization moment and the short time from ionization to recombination of ionized electrons. In addition, effects of the peak field amplitude ratio, the full width at half maximum, the phase delay of the two-color pulses, the laser intensity and ionization probability on the harmonic efficiency enhancement were also investigated.

Abstract:In the past three decades, high-order harmonic generation (HHG) has attracted much attention due to its promising applications on creating table-top coherent extreme-ultraviolet (EUV/XUV) or X-ray sources, synthesizing attosecond pulses, probing electron dynamics and making ”molecular movies”, etc. We review our recent experimental and theoretical progresses in HHG driven by two-color laser fields, including broadening of XUV supercontinuum, generation of isolated attosecond pulses (IAPs), selection of long or short quantum trajectories, enhancement of HHG yield, creation of wavelength-tunable, bandwidth-controlled XUV emission, etc.

Abstract:High-order harmonics generated from the interaction between a two-color circularly polarized laser and overdense plasma is proposed analytically and investigated numerically. By mixing two circularly polarized lasers rotating in the same direction with different frequencies (ω0, 2ω0), the laser envelope is modulated to oscillate at the laser fundamental frequency while the peak intensity of each cycle becomes greater than that of the monochromatic light. This feature makes the plasma oscillate more violently and frequently under the striking of the two-color laser than the monochromatic one, thereby generating stronger harmonics and attosecond pulses. In addition, the incorporation of the 2ω0 light greatly expands the spectral width of harmonics, which facilitates the production of shorter attosecond pulses. Particle-in-cell simulations prove that under the same condition, the harmonic radiation efficiency in the two-color laser case can be improved by orders of magnitude, and isolated attosecond pulses can be even generated as a bonus in some cases.

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the high-order harmonic generation from a one-dimensional model of the helium ion in a two-color laser field synthesized by adding a relatively weak subharmonic laser pulse to a 800-nm laser pulse. The initial states of the helium ion are prepared as the ground state and a coherent superposition state, respectively. Numerical results show evident advantages of using the coherent superposition state to enhance the harmonic generation efficiency. When the phase of the subharmonic pulse is properly shifted with respect to the fundamental pulse, both an ultrabroad xuv supercontinuum spectrum and enhancement of high-order harmonic emission can be observed. By superposing a properly selected range of the harmonic spectrum, the possibility of generating intense pulses that can be as short as 45 as is demonstrated.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate high-order harmonic generation by employing strong-field approximation (SFA) and present a new approach to the extension of the high-order harmonic cutoff frequency via an exploration of the dependence of high-order harmonic generation on the waveform of laser fields. The dependence is investigated via detailed analysis of the classical trajectories of the ionized electron moving in the continuum in the velocity-position plane. The classical trajectory consists of three sections (Acceleration Away, Deceleration Away, and Acceleration Back), and their relationship with the electron recollision energy is investigated. The analysis of classical trajectories indicates that, besides the final (Acceleration Back) section, the electron recollision energy also relies on the previous two sections. We simultaneously optimize the waveform in all three sections to increase the electron recollision energy, and an extension of the cutoff frequency up to I-p + 20.26U(p) is presented with a theoretically synthesized waveform of the laser field.

Abstract:The phase-matching condition of high-order harmonic generation driven by intense few-cycle pulses could be controlled by adding second-harmonic pulses to change the ionization fraction of the gaseous medium. The harmonic generation efficiency could be improved by moving the phase-matching point with an all-optical control of the ionization fraction or a proper change of the confocal parameter. A specific order of harmonics could be easily controlled to reach phase matching at a fixed higher gas pressure by adding second-harmonic pulses with a suitable intensity. Such an all-optical phase-matching control was demonstrated to be dependent upon the temporal delay between the fundamental-wave and second harmonic pulses.

Abstract:Synthesis of multi-color laser pulses has been developed as a promising way to improve low conversion efficiency of high-order harmonic generation (HHG). Here we systematically study the effect of laser focus in a two-color waveform on generation of macroscopic HHG in soft x-rays. We find that the dependence of HHG yields on laser focus at low or high gas pressure is sensitive to the characteristics of single-atom harmonic response, in which “short”- or “long”-trajectory emissions can be selectively controlled by changing the waveform of two-color synthesized laser pulse. We uncover the phase-matching mechanism of HHG in the gas medium by examining the propagation of the two-color waveform and the evolution of time-frequency emissions of high-harmonic field. We further reveal that the nonlinear effects, such as geometric phase, atomic dispersion, and plasma defocusing, are responsible for modification of two-color waveform upon propagation. This work can be used to find better macroscopic conditions for generating soft x-ray HHG by employing two-color optimized waveforms.

Abstract:We propose a method to broaden the cut-off region of high harmonic generation by optimizing the parameters of two-color laser fields synthesized by an intense 5 fs pulse at 800 nm and a relatively weak, subharmonic pulse at 2400 nm. Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm is employed to optimize the electric field amplitude, pulse duration of the control pulse, and the time delay between two pulses. Our simulation shows that a broadened XUV supercontinuum with a 115 eV spectral width can be generated, which is two times broader compared with no optimization, and directly creates an isolated 76as pulse even without any phase compensation.

Abstract:The high-order harmonic generation process of ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}{}^{+}$ in a co-rotating two-color circularly polarized laser pulse was investigated by numerically solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. Compared with the target of the atom, the harmonic intensity of ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}{}^{+}$ is remarkably enhanced. Moreover, the harmonic intensity of ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}{}^{+}$ approaches its maximum when the electric field amplitude ratio of the fundamental frequency and the second one is approximately 1:2.3. By analyzing the evolution of the time-dependent wave packets, the enhancement of harmonic intensity may be attributed to an increase in the probability of the ionized electron recolliding with the parent ion. In addition, the dependence of harmonic intensity on the internuclear distance and the alignment angle of ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}{}^{+}$ is explored. We found that the ellipticity of the particular harmonic order changes with the molecular alignment angle, which provides a chance to generate an extreme ultraviolet coherent light pulse with controllable polarization.

Abstract:An effective scheme to enhance the yield of high-order harmonic generation originated from spatially inhomogeneous field through the interaction between few-cycle chirped laser pulses and a nano-tip structure is demonstrated. The conversion efficiency of harmonics from chirped laser pulses was significantly improved by nearly three more orders of magnitude than that of chirp-free pulses, and the cutoff energy of the corresponding harmonics was dramatically enhanced. By superimposing a series of properly selected orders of harmonics, isolated attosecond pulses of high intensity can be obtained. Furthermore, we compared the effects of different types of chirps on harmonics.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the high-order harmonic generation when the spatially extended systems are irradiated by a two-color laser field. By controlling electron ionization, the omega+2 omega excitation scheme creates efficient harmonics radiation beyond I-p+3.17U(p) with both odd and even harmonics. Calculations show that the harmonics beyond I-p+3.17U(p) are well phase locked, moreover, the chirp rate is only 3 as/eV. Using a 5 fs driving pulse, the bandwidth supporting isolated attosecond pulse in harmonic spectrum is 125 eV, and a 68 as single pulse can be obtained straightforwardly.

Abstract:We present the most prominent features in two-colour coherent control of high-order harmonic generation using a strongly driven two-level atom model, which are known to generate high harmonics as well as hyper-Raman lines with a plateau and a cut-off. Furthermore, for one laser field case, we find, when the hyper-Raman lines are located at the position of the high harmonics, that the high harmonics are strongly enhanced due to the interference effect between the high harmonics and the hyper-Raman lines. Within these conditions, by combining the laser field with another much weaker laser field, we show plentiful and strong high harmonics in the light spectrum of the driven atomic system.

Abstract:The emission of high-order harmonics from solids under intense laser-pulse irradiation is revolutionizing our understanding of strong-field solid-light interactions, while simultaneously opening avenues towards novel, all-solid, coherent, short-wavelength table-top sources with tailored emission profiles and nanoscale light-field control. To date, broadband spectra in solids have been generated well into the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV), but the comparatively low conversion efficiency in the XUV range achieved under optimal conditions still lags behind gas-based high-harmonic generation (HHG) sources. Here, we demonstrate that two-color high-order harmonic wave mixing in a fused silica solid is more efficient than solid HHG driven by a single color. This finding has significant implications for compact XUV sources where gas-based HHG is not feasible, as solid XUV wave mixing surpasses solid-HHG in performance. Moreover, our results enable utilizing solid high-order harmonic wave mixing as a probe of structure or material dynamics of the generating solid, which will enable reducing measurement times compared to the less efficient regular solid HHG. The emission intensity scaling that follows perturbative optical wave mixing, combined with the angular separation of the emitted frequencies, makes our approach a decisive step for all-solid coherent XUV sources and for studying light-engineered materials.

Abstract:The methods of enhancement of the strong high-order harmonics of femtosecond pulses in laser-induced plasma are demonstrated. It comprises the application of the four techniques allowing the enhancement of harmonics in different spectral ranges. Among them are the selection of targets for ablation to create the conditions for resonance enhancement of single harmonic, formation of the quasi-phase-matching of a spectrally tunable group of harmonics, application of the two-color pump of plasma, and the formation of nanoparticles-contained plasmas. The number of generated coherent XUV photons increased in the region of single resonantly enhanced harmonic (62 nm) and the shorter-wavelength region (30–50 nm). The above techniques of harmonics enhancement allowed a significant (up to 50 times) growth in a whole harmonic yield in the case of indium plasma. We discuss the reasons preventing the joint implementation of the four methods of harmonics enhancement in the same spectral region.

It can be used as the tabletop ultrafast vacuum ultraviolet laser source and soft X-ray laser source in laboratory. At the same time, high-order harmonics are used to generate attosecond pulses. The generation of these advanced laser sources has greatly enriched the research tools of material science. In this review article, we introduce the principle, optimization,and application of high-order harmonics of gases and solids.

Abstract:High-order harmonics emitted from relativistic laser–solid interaction can be used as a bright extreme ultraviolet source. However, such a source usually has mixed frequencies along the emission direction. Through theoretical and numerical studies, we propose a scheme to realize monochromatic harmonic emission along individual directions by using dual laser pulses with orthogonal polarizations, where a relativistic P-polarized laser is used as a pump laser in combination with a moderate S-polarized laser as a seed laser. We find that harmonics of the S-polarized laser can be efficiently generated with several orders of magnitude enhancement and spontaneous angular dispersion depending on the harmonic order. Our scheme may be beneficial to future applications requiring monochromatic radiation along a specific direction or multi-chromatic radiations in different directions.

Abstract:Abstract High harmonic generation (HHG) by two-color counter-rotating relativistic laser pulses with arbitrary frequency ratio is investigated through particle-in-cell simulations. It is shown that the dichromatic laser driver at various frequency ratios can effectively produce high-order harmonics with different spectral features. A general selection rule of this extended scheme can be obtained and the corresponding harmonic helicity can be identified through a simple analytical model based on a relativistic oscillating mirror. Thus, the results in this paper may offer new opportunities for arbitrary spectral control of generated harmonics, which is of significance for diverse potential applications in practice.
