Abstract:For the safe operation of equipment and personal safety protection in high-voltage environments, the precise measurement of the high-frequency electric field is of paramount importance. Optical electric field sensor (OES) is a current research trend for high-frequency electric field measurement but is generally limited by low sensitivity and the need for high-speed acquisition modules. Here, we propose a high-frequency electric field intensity measurement approach based on frequency shift with a high gain and a wide frequency range. We used two different frequency shift methods, i.e., stimulated Brillouin scattering and down-conversion. Based on the former method, an amplification module is designed to enhance the OES signal with a frequency range from 11 GHz to 20 GHz and a noise-suppressed gain of up to 63 dB, and based on the latter one, the high-frequency OES signal is down-converted to a sub-MHz intermediate frequency signal. The frequency shift approach shows the potential to detect and analyze high-frequency electric fields with low cost and a small footprint, which is valuable for their applications in electronic warfare, high-voltage engineering, space exploration, etc.

Abstract:A novel special optical fiber, which is very sensitive to magnetic field, is proposed. The two beam lights counter-propagating in this kind of fiber can generate large nonreciprocal phase shift. It can be used in ultra-low magnetic field detection. In this paper, the related theory is derived in detail. The influence of fiber parameters on the effect is simulated and analyzed. It is proved that a magnetic field sensor with pTesla-level precision could be demonstrated with this kind of special fiber in this paper.

Abstract:AbstractThe traditional electrical field sensing can be realized by utilizing electro-optic materials or liquid crystals and has limitations of easy breakdown, free assembly and difficult measurement of low-frequency. Here, we propose a new method to realize safe measurement of spatial dynamic electric field by using a micro fiber interferometer integrated with gold nanofilm. The energy of the electric charge received through antenna forms the intrinsic electric field with two micro electrodes, one of which is the 120 nm gold film vibration beam micromachined by femtosecond lasers and integrated with the micro fiber. The change of the intrinsic electric field force due to the spatial electric field will cause the vibration of the film beam. By demodulating the output signal of the micro fiber interferometer, the electric field can be measured. We demonstrate the detectable frequency ranges from tens of Hz to tens of KHz and the minimum electric field intensity is ~200 V/m at 1 KHz. Our electric field measurement technology combining optical fiber interference with gold nanostructures shows the advantages of security, high sensitivity, compact size and multiplexed multi-point and remote detection.

Abstract:Optical fiber sensors are of splendid strength for electrical field intensity sensor due to characteristics including the immunity to electromagnetic interference, lightweight, high sensitivity, and large bandwidth. In this paper, we proposed an electric field intensity sensor based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based liquid crystal (LC) filled photonic crystal fiber (PCF) embedded in optical fiber ring laser (FRL). The air hole of PCF combines the LC and fiber core together. When LC is introduced into air holes, it can maintain the waveguide based on external parameters. The photonic bandgap effect significantly improved the sensitivity between light and external electrical field intensity. Thanks to the FRL demodulation, a high signal to noise ratio (SNR) spectrum about 35 dB is obtained. Besides, in comparison with traditional LC-PCF structures, the sensitivity of ours is as high as 1.1 nmVrms which is about twice than traditional sensors. At the same time, the stability of proposed sensor was verified which fluctuation was 0.15 nm around 2.5 hours. Therefore, our structure is expected to practical applications in remote electric field monitor and such electric modulate electro-optical devices.

Abstract:Electro-optic electric field sensors provide good immunity to EMI noise and fast response time.This paper introduces an integrated optical electric field sensor for measuring transient electric fields in high voltage power systems.The sensor principle is illustrated with a design for intensive field measurements. The sensor head is separated into two elements to develop an equivalent circuit for the sensor to calculate the electro-optic modulator and dipole antenna parameters.The results show that the frequency characteristics of the sensor's transfer function are quite flat,and the maximum electric field which can be measured is close to(10~6 V/m).

Abstract:In order to meet the requirements of wide-range and wide-area measurement of voltage in power systems, the integration and miniaturization of electric field sensors have become a major trend. Optical electric field sensors have the advantages of high sensitivity, high immunity and wide frequency response range. With the improvement of thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) etching technology, we propose a micro optical electric field sensor based on a TFLN waveguide structure with the advantages of small size, high linearity and large dynamic range. The sensor achieves intense electric field measurements of more than $100 \mathrm{kV} / \mathrm{m}$. The dynamic range can reach more than 86 dB.

Abstract:A novel intense electric field measurement system based on the electro-optic Pockels effect has been designed and implemented by using the integrated electro-optic chips for intensive electric field measurement. Principles of the sensor are illustrated and a sensor design for intensive field measurement is given. Compared with traditional electric field measurement system, this sensor has small size, less than 20 mm core length, optical signal transfer provide safe test of intensive field and immune to external EMI noise, broad band response from DC to GHz. The maximum E-field which can be measured is close to 10 6 V/m. And the lightning impulse experiment upon the 1m long air gap ensures that the sensor is suitable for the intensive electric field measurement. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:This article proposed and demonstrated an ultrasensitive optical electric field sensor (OES) by hybrid cascaded configuration of a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) and a fiber Sagnac interferometer (FSI). The FPI is fabricated by a LiNbO3 (LN) crystal with length of 1.04 mm, while the FSI consists of a certain length of Panda polarization-maintain fiber (PMF). The sensitivity of the E-field can be significantly enhanced through the utilization of high-order harmonic Vernier effect (HVE) by employing two interferometers. The experimental results show that the sensor is capable of measuring E-field 0-1.01 V/mu m, with the sensitivity of 4.38 nm/E (40 times that of a single FPI). The results of many experiments demonstrate the sensor has excellent stability, with the E-field sensitivity stabilized at 4.38 +/- 0.0016 nm/E and a repeatability error of only 3.65 x 10(-4). The sensor exhibits a low detection limit (DL) of merely 1.13 x 10(-2) E. Additionally, the temperature compensation of E-field sensors can be achieved by utilizing the sensitivity coefficient matrix. The proposed E-field sensor overcomes the inherent limitation of half-wave voltage for measuring E-field range, eliminating the need to incorporate a 1/4 wave plate into its structure. And it fundamentally eliminates disturbances caused by variations in light intensity on the sensor output. Applications using this sensor confirmed that it is expected to find widespread use in measurements of intense E-fields.

Polymer dipole antenna-based fiber optic electric field sensors

Abstract:Polymer fiber-optic electric field sensors were designed and fabricated, using polymer BPAN-NT material as the active core layer. Assuming that the electro-optic coefficient r13 of the core polymer is 10 pm/V, electric field sensors were designed with half-wave electric fields of 36.2 kV/m and 15.8 kV/m, respectively. The optical ridge waveguide was fabricated by reactive ion etching (RIE), the active polymer core was poled by corona, and the dipole antenna electrode was processed by sputtering and lithography. The electric field sensors were tested under low-frequency voltages. The optical signals vary linearly with the voltage signals. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the electric field sensor and its potential in high electric field measurement.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel all-fiber electric field sensor based on tapered fiber-slab waveguide coupler was proposed for the first time. Experiments were implemented for investigating the dependences of TFSC transmission features on their geometries parameters. On the base of that a TFSC based sensor with optimal construction parameters and sharper coupling spectra were fabricated. The nearly linear relationship between the changes of sensor outputs and the external applied electric field are demonstrated by experiments. The minimal detectable of electric field has also been demonstrated experimentally to be ~50V/cm.

Abstract:We propose a highly sensitive sensor based on a nematic liquid-crystal-filled side-hole fiber. The liquid crystal is precisely filled into an air hole of the optical fiber using a method of manually gluing in the fusion splicer. Due to the coupling between the liquid crystal waveguide and the fiber core, multiple response dips appear in the transmission spectrum of the device. When an external temperature or electric field variation is applied to the liquid crystal and its refractive index changes, the transmission spectrum of this device will shift accordingly. Temperature and electric field response tests were performed on the device in the experiment, and the obtained temperature and electric field sensitivities were as high as −1.5 nm/°C and 3.88 nm/Vpp, respectively. For the exhibited advantages of being easy to manufacture, low cost, and high sensitivity, the proposed sensor is very promising for actual application in temperature or weak electric field monitoring.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to address the issue of high-precision measurement of AC electric field. An electro-optical sensor with high sensitivity is proposed for this purpose. Design/methodology/approach The proposed sensor combines electromagnetic induction and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing techniques. It is composed of a sensing probe, a piece or stack of piezoelectric ceramics (PZT) and an FBG. A signal processing circuit is designed to rectify and amplify the induced voltage. The processed signal is applied to the PZT and the deformation of PZT is detected by FBG. Theoretical calculation and simulation are conducted to verify the working principle of the probe. The sensor prototype is fabricated and its performance is tested. Findings The results of this study show that the sensor has good linearity and repeatability. The sensor sensitivity is 0.061 pm/Vm −1 in the range from 250 to 17,500 V/m, enabling a measurement resolution of electric field strength of 16.3 V/m. The PZT stack is used to enhance the sensor sensitivity and the resolution can be improved up to 3.15 V/m. Originality/value A flexure hinge lever mechanism is used to amplify the deformation of PZT for further enhancement of sensitivity. The results show that the proposed sensor has high sensitivity and can be used for the accurate measurement of an electric field. The proposed sensor could have potential use for electric field measurement in the power industry.

Abstract:Electromagnetic field sensors are widely used in various areas. In recent years, great progress has been made in the optical sensing technique for electromagnetic field measurement, and varieties of corresponding sensors have been proposed. Types of magnetic field optical sensors were presented, including probes-based Faraday effect, magnetostrictive materials, and magnetic fluid. The sensing system-based Faraday effect is complex, and the sensors are mostly used in intensive magnetic field measurement. Magnetic field optical sensors based on magnetic fluid have high sensitivity compared to that based on magnetostrictive materials. Three types of electric field optical sensors are presented, including the sensor probes based on electric-optic crystal, piezoelectric materials, and electrostatic attraction. The majority of sensors are developed using the sensing scheme of combining the LiNbO3 crystal and optical fiber interferometer due to the good electro-optic properties of the crystal. The piezoelectric materials-based electric field sensors have simple structure and easy fabrication, but it is not suitable for weak electric field measurement. The sensing principle based on electrostatic attraction is less commonly-used sensing methods. This review aims at presenting the advances in optical sensing technology for electromagnetic field measurement, analyzing the principles of different types of sensors and discussing each advantage and disadvantage, as well as the future outlook on the performance improvement of sensors.

Abstract:Electromagnetic pollution is a major challenge, as it has brought inevitable damage to the environment and human health. Monitoring of electromagnetic radiation is critical to identifying electromagnetic pollution for treatment. Conventional monitoring devices could produce a large number of waste batteries causing pollution. Optical fiber sensing with characteristic of passive detection is an efficient way to monitor electromagnetic field intensity. However, previously reported measurement range of optical fiber magnetic field sensors are rare to achieve a wide range of magnetic field measurement. In this work, we propose a passive optical fiber magnetic field measurement scenario. The measurement range from 0 to 100 mT and a resolution of 2.9 × 10 −2 mT for DC magnetic field detection are obtained. Also, both exceptional orientation dependence property and the sensitivity of 341 pm/mT have been achieved. This passive optical fiber magnetic field sensor with wide range and anti-electromagnetic interference has excellent prospects for application in the electromagnetic pollution monitoring, power equipment assessment and geological exploration.

Abstract:In order to meet the special demands of impulse electric field measurement simultaneously, such as intensive signal, fine insulation, transient, wide frequency band, and small size, three kinds of optical electric integrated electric field sensor were designed and fabricated. The output/input character and frequency response of the sensors were examined carefully. It can be find that the measurable amplitude of two traditional designed sensors is less than 80 kV/m, which is not suitable for intensive electric field measurement. But a novel sensor designed here is suitable for insulated, intensive (about 300kV/m) electric field measurement. And the application of which in the lightning impulse experiment upon air gap ensure that the sensor can be expected to widespread use in transient intensive electric field measurement investigation.

Abstract:A high-sensitivity intensity-demodulated fiber-optic evanescent field sensor is proposed for vector magnetic field measurement. The structure was fabricated by bending a section of single mode fiber into a U shape under the flame of alcohol burner, and then coated with magnetic fluid. By bending the fiber into a U shape, a noncentrosymmetric fiber-optic evanescent field is distributed on the cross section of fiber. Combing with the magnetic-field-dependent anisotropy of magnetic fluid, a high intensity sensitivity of 2.481 dB/mT and a high direction sensitivity of 0.182 dB/degrees were obtained. Due to the simple structure, high sensitivity and low cost, the proposed fiber-optic sensor has potential application in the vehicle navigation, aviation, and biomedical fields.

Abstract:Static electrification and partial discharges caused by oil flow in power transformers lead to many accidents. This paper introduces an optical fiber sensor which can be directly mounted inside high-voltage electric devices for electrification measurement in power transformers. Unlike the existing normal electrification measurement method which only be used in static oil, the new one take optical fiber as its probe and measures the electrification in flowing oil by detecting luminous flux, and is available for on-line monitoring.

Abstract:The detection of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) field is of great significance in determining the field environment of tested equipment in small spaces. Finger-shaped miniature optical fiber sensors for electromagnetic pulse field measurement were designed. The antenna of a weak field sensor was integrated with a shielding shell, and the wire welded at the direct electro-optic converting circuit connected to an optical fiber through special structure and circuit design was taken as the antenna of a strong field sensor. Measurements in the time domain and frequency domain had been carried out for the two sensors. Experiment results demonstrate that the weak field sensor and the strong field sensor have flat responses from 100 kHz to 1 GHz with a variation of 2.3 dB and 2.9 dB, respectively, and the EMP waveform detected by the sensors agrees well with the applied standard square wave. Moreover, the strong field sensor exhibits linear responses from 645 V/m to 83 kV/m. The resolution of the weak field sensor is as low as 13 V/m. The result indicated that the designed sensors had good performance.
